As per the agreement, PSMC will provide design and construction support to build India's first AI-enabled greenfield fab in Gujarat, license a broad portfolio of technologies and provide engineering support to the fab unit. "We are pleased to partner with PSMC, whose technology and expertise will significantly accelerate our roadmap to pioneer semiconductor manufacturing in India. It will position us to play a key role in the growing semiconductor market to serve global customers," Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran said. The company is setting up a chip manufacturing unit in Dholera at an investment of up to Rs 91,000 crore ( about USD 11 billion). Tata Electronics, PSMC conclude pact for ₹91,000 crore Dholera chip manufacturing unit

<keyword id="19924335" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-group" source="keywords">Tata Group</keyword> is planning to build a huge semiconductor fab plant in <keyword id="19906863" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gujarat" source="keywords">Gujarat</keyword>'s <keyword id="20006005" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dholera" source="keywords">Dholera</keyword>, and it will begin operations in 2024 itself, Chairman N <keyword id="20015665" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chandrasekaran" source="keywords">Chandrasekaran</keyword> said on Wednesday. He said the salt-to-software group is in the final stages of negotiations for the plant. "Tata Group has also made a commitment, and is on the verge of concluding and announcing a huge semiconductor fab in Dholera, and we are about to complete these negotiations and start in 2024," Chandrasekaran said at the 10th <keyword id="19916472" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="vibrant-gujarat-global-summit" source="keywords">Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit</keyword> here. The chairman also said the group will begin construction of a 20 gigawatt lithium ion storage battery factory in the state's Sanand city in the next two months. Chandrasekaran said in the recent past, the group has made a "significant commitment" to expand its presence in Sanand, which, he said is becoming a home for all of the group's electric vehicle technology. The expansion in Sanand has been undertaken to meet the growing demand for EVs, he added. Apart from that, the group is also building the C295 defence aircraft in Vadodara initially and will later start manufacturing it at Dholera, Chandrasekaran said. First phase of the Indian Institute of Skills being constructed in partnership with the central and state governments will be launched by March 2024 in the state, he said. "We see Gujarat as a very very important destination, not only for business growth but for the future advanced technology industries that India is looking to grow in," he said. At present, 21 companies from the group are present in the state and employ over 50,000 people, the chairman said, stating that the group has been closely linked to the state because of its founder's hometown being Navsari. He said the "steady and spectacular" progress in Gujarat demonstrates the visionary leadership of Prime Minister <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword>, who started the event two decades ago. Chandrasekaran said the economic benefits which have accrued to the state have also had a tremendous impact on social development. In the biggest ever corporate investment in the history of independent India, a joint venture of the Vedanta and Foxconn had on September 14 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Gujarat government to invest ₹ 1,54,000 crore to set up the plant in the state. Nehra had signed the MoU on behalf of the state government. "Vedanta and Foxconn have hired sector experts who are evaluating possible sites for the upcoming plant in Gujarat. Earlier they were evaluating multiple sites across different countries. In December 2021, when the Centre had announced the 'India Semiconductor Mission', they started looking for sites across different states in India (and then selected Gujarat)," Nehra said. The promoters are now evaluating sites in Gujarat on different technical aspects, commercial viability, connectivity and utility point of view, Nehra said, adding that the site may be finalised in the next couple of weeks. "There are many minute things which need to be kept in mind while selecting the site. For example, the production process can get affected due to the vibrations of passing trains. There must not be any vibrations near the plant. Power outage of even one second in a year can result in a loss of crores of rupees," he said. The project is likely to get huge subsidies and incentives, like zero stamp duty on land purchase and subsidised water and electricity, under the '<keyword id="15015910" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="gujarat-semiconductor-policy-2022-27" source="Orion">Gujarat Semiconductor Policy 2022-27</keyword>' announced by the state government in July this year. Gujarat became the first state in the country to have such a dedicated policy for the semiconductor and display fabrication sector, a government official earlier said. While announcing the policy, the Gujarat government had announced that it will set up '<keyword id="14570013" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="dholera-semicon-city" source="Orion">Dholera Semicon City</keyword>' in the Dholera Special Investment Region near Ahmedabad to attract investors. Under this policy, eligible projects will be given 75 per cent subsidy on purchase of the first 200 acres of land for setting up manufacturing units. The eligible projects will be provided good quality water at the rate of ₹ 12 per cubic metre for the first five years. If the investor decides to build its own desalination plant for captive use in the initial five years, the government will provide capital subsidy of 50 per cent of project cost, according to the policy document. The eligible manufacturing units would also get power tariff subsidy of ₹ 2 per unit for the first 10 years of going into production, it said, adding that such projects can also claim exemption from paying any electricity duty. To encourage investors under the policy, the state government has also announced to reimburse 100 per cent of stamp duty which investors would pay for the first time for taking land on lease, sale or on land transfer. In order to remove bottlenecks and provide quick clearances to investors, the state government will establish a single window mechanism to provide all the necessary approvals from one place, the policy document stated. Tata Electronics signs pact with Tokyo Electron to buy semicon equipment

New Delhi, The Union <keyword id="19901283" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cabinet" source="keywords">Cabinet</keyword>, chaired by Prime Minister <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword>, on Thursday approved the establishment of three semiconductor fabrication (fab) units that will start construction within the next 100 days and generate direct employment of 20,000 advanced technology jobs and nearly 60,000 indirect jobs. The semiconductor fab with 50,000 wafers per month capacity will be set up by Tata Electronics Private Ltd (TEPL) in partnership with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC), Taiwan, in Dholera, Gujarat. This fab will be constructed with an investment of Rs 91,000 crore, said Union IT Minister <keyword id="19904138" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ashwini-vaishnaw" source="keywords">Ashwini Vaishnaw</keyword>. This fab will cover high-performance compute chips with 28 nm technology, and power management chips for electric vehicles (EVs), telecom, defence, automotive, consumer electronics, display, power electronics, etc, according to the government. Another semiconductor assembly, testing, monitoring, and packing (ATMP) unit with a capacity of 48 million per day by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) in Morigaon, Assam, will be set up with an investment of Rs 27,000 crore. TSAT semiconductor is developing indigenous advanced semiconductor packaging technologies including flip chip and ISIP (integrated system in package) technologies. It will cover sectors like automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecom and mobile phones, etc, according to the government. The third semiconductor ATMP unit for specialised chips will be set up by <keyword id="20541983" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cg-power" source="keywords">CG Power</keyword>, in partnership with Renesas Electronics Corporation, Japan and <keyword id="20776317" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stars-microelectronics" source="keywords">Stars Microelectronics</keyword>, Thailand in Sanand, Gujarat. "This unit with a capacity of 15 million per day will be set up with an investment of Rs 7,600 crore," the Centre said. The CG power semiconductor unit will manufacture chips for consumer, industrial, automotive, and power applications. Within a very short time, the India Semiconductor Mission has achieved four big successes. With these units, the semiconductor ecosystem will get established in India. India already has deep capabilities in chip design. With these units, the country will develop capabilities in chip fabrication. Advanced packaging technologies will be indigenously developed in India with Thursday's announcement. These units will accelerate employment creation in downstream automotive, electronics manufacturing, telecom manufacturing, industrial manufacturing, and other semiconductor consuming industries. The 'Programme for Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystem' in India was notified in 2021 with a total outlay of Rs 76,000 crore. In June last year, the Cabinet had approved the proposal of US-based Micron for setting up a semiconductor unit in Sanand, Gujarat. Construction of this unit is progressing at a rapid pace and a robust semiconductor ecosystem is emerging near the unit.

<keyword id="6355315" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="elon-musk" source="Orion">Elon Musk</keyword>'s <keyword id="107096" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tesla" source="Orion">Tesla</keyword> may finally end its dry run in India and announce to set up an Electric Vehicle (EV) supply system manufacturing plant in <keyword id="6354766" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gujarat" source="Orion">Gujarat</keyword> during the 'Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit' next month. The announcement is likely to be made in the presence of Tesla CEO and Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword> at the flagship event from January 10-12, according to media reports. With its strategic location and favourable business environment, Gujarat has emerged as the "preferred destination for Tesla's manufacturing plans". According to Ahmedabad Mirror, the state government has suggested Sanand, Becharaji and Dholera as the site for Tesla to set up its manufacturing plant. Earlier, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu were being considered by Tesla to set up its EV plant. Tesla has been engaged in intense negotiations with the Union Government, seeking concessions that would facilitate a smoother entry into the Indian market. Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal in November visited Tesla's state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Fremont, California. Goyal said it was "extremely delighted to see talented Indian engineers and finance professionals working at senior positions and contributing to Tesla's remarkable journey to transform mobility". "Also proud to see the growing importance of auto component suppliers from India in the Tesla EV supply chain. It is on its way to double its components imports from India. Missed Elon Musk's magnetic presence and I wish him a speedy recovery," the Union Minister posted on X. Musk, had apologised to Goyal for not being able to meet him as he was keeping unwell. "It was an honour to have you visit Tesla! My apologies for not being able to travel to California today, but I look forward to meeting at a future date," Musk replied. Goyal and Musk were scheduled to meet during the Minister's US visit, after the <keyword id="6360701" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="spacex" source="Orion">SpaceX</keyword> and X owner met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US in June, and revealed he was keen to make significant investments in India. According to earlier reports, the automaker asked the Indian Government for an initial tariff concession that would offset India's steep customs duties of 70 per cent for cars under $40,000 and 100 per cent for cars above $40,000. Tesla had asked for the concession as a condition for constructing a plant in the country. The reduced tariffs would apply to all EV manufacturers. India's EV market has the potential to achieve over 40 per cent penetration with $100 billion revenue by 2030. This growth is expected to be driven by strong adoption (over 45 per cent) in both two-wheeler (2W) and three-wheeler (3W) categories, with four-wheelers (cars) penetration projected to grow to more than 20 per cent, according to a recent report by Bain &amp; Company and Blume Ventures.

Tesla may set up EV plant in Gujarat, Musk likely to visit India next month

After unveiling his ambitious ‘100 Smart Cities’ and ‘Digital India’ plans, <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> Narendra Modi—last month launched another audacious scheme Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (Parliamentarian's Model Village Scheme; this is also known as SAGY). This is his strategic move to prepare rural India for the digital age and ensure that benefits of the government’s growth endeavours are effectively percolated to communities residing on the fringes of the mainstream society. 
 
In a nutshell, the scheme aims at creating 2,500 smart villages by 2019—Each MP should ensure that one village is turning into a model village by 2016, followed by two more villages by 2019. After 2019, each MP must develop five model villages during their tenure in their constituencies till 2024. Modi also wants MLAs to join the programme, which will add 7,000 more villages to the ‘smart club’. 
 
The initiative aims at holistic development where model villages are connected to the Internet (all government or administrative documents will be made available in digital form; thus villagers don’t need to travel to other cities to submitting applications to or getting certificates from government bodies) and where all households have access to clean water, sanitation and low-carbon energy. Model villages will be provided basic amenities that are often only available in urban areas, and a social security system. The scheme also has an inherent rider to prevent MPs from misusing it—the selected villages should neither be MPs’ own villages, nor belonging to in-laws or other relatives. 
 
These select villages are expected to reach a certain level of proficiency in terms of development that will help prevent migration of villagers to cities and farmers’ suicide; besides offering jobs to youth at local level. A litany of socially-oriented programmes can be incorporated and implemented under the scheme. It includes developing biogas plant that could make a village self-reliant for fuel requirements; implementing drip irrigation to meet water requirements for crops and providing nutritional food for pregnant women to prevent mortality (maternal or infant). 
 
SAGY comes close on the heels of the plan to develop 100 smart cities which was announced by Modi earlier. Supported by a budget allocation of Rs 7,060 crore, the plan has already elicited euphoric response from the IT sector and according to market research firm IDC, at least Rs 2,000 crore will flow into the IT sector on the back of the ‘smart cities’ initiative. 
 The smart cities may take inspiration from similar initiatives in developed countries and are likely to be modeled after local projects such as Lavasa smart city, built by HCC near Pune; Electronics City in Bangalore where US-based Cisco Systems is involved in city developmental operations; and Dholera in Gujarat all of which are under different stages of construction and completion. The government has already signed a pact with <keyword id="104972" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Japanese-government">Japanese government</keyword>, which will help turn Varanasi into a smart city. 
 
The smart village initiative is also an extension of Modi’s ‘digital India’ plan, which aims to promote digital inclusion with broadband connectivity down to the village level, enabling improved access to services through IT-enabled platforms. The initiative, which is worth Rs 1.13-lakh crore, will not just provide last mile internet connectivity, but also offer better access to government services and enhance development of IT skills among local people, especially youth. 
 For Modi, who is criticised as pro-business and less-socially oriented, the ‘smart village’ initiative is an opportunity to show that the <keyword id="806977" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="development-model">development model</keyword> that he envisages is not exclusive of people in the remote villages of the country.
