(8th April) Two more persons tested positive for coronavirus in Dharavi area on Wednesday, taking the total number of such cases in the densely-populated slum area of Mumbai to nine, a civic official said. Among the new patients are a 25-year-old man from Mukund Nagar locality and a 35-year-old man from Dhanwada chawl, he said. The patient from Mukund Nagar was a high risk contact of a 49-year-old man, who earlier tested positive for coronavirus, and was kept at a quarantine facility, he said. "Contact tracing is underway in Dhanwada chawl (where another new case has been reported)," the official said, adding they are going to seal the area as per the protocol. Dharavi is one of the biggest slums in Asia where nearly 15 lakh people live in small shanties, making it one of the most congested areas of the metropolis. <keyword id="927991" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Brihanmumbai-Municipal-Corporation">The BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation</keyword>'s 'Chase the Virus' strategy in Dharavi -- Asia's biggest slum -- has found a new fan in the <keyword id="1193333" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Philippines-government">Philippines government</keyword>. as the Southeast Asia nation also grapples with the Covid-19 pandemic, a top official said here on Tuesday. "The Philippines government will follow and implement the Dharavi Model for containing Covid in densely populated slums" an elated BMC Municipal Commissioner I.S. Chahal told IANS. The BMC has already shared details of the 'Chase the Virus' policy with the Philippines' Department of Health (DOH). A news portal, Inquirer.net on Tuesday, has quoted the Philippines DOH which declared that it would follow the <keyword id="9780178" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="dharavi-mumbai">Dharavi-Mumbai</keyword> campaign conceptualized by BMC's Assistant Municipal Commissioner Kiran Dighavkar which earned all round praise. The Philippines, with a population of around 10.1 crore crammed in an area of nearly 2.98 lakh sq.km, is slightly smaller than Maharashtra with 3.07 lakh sq. km area and a population close to 11.5 crore. However, the archipelagic country currently ranks 22nd on the Corona Worldometer with 169,213 cases and 2,687 fatalities compared to Maharashtra's 604,358 cases and 20,265 deaths. Like Mumbai, around 30-lakh people live in congested slums in Manila, besides other cities in the Philippines. The high population density of Dharavi posed a huge challenge to the BMC and state health authorities to tackle the Corona spread. Civic officials said that the city succeeded in achieving what was earlier considered virtually a "mission impossible", especially in Dharavi, earning the BMC and Maharashtra government a pat from <keyword id="2555741" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-World-Health-Organisation">the World Health Organisation</keyword> in early July. Chahal said that as a result of its strategy, there are only 17,704 'active cases' in Mumbai, of which around 5,338 symptomatic patients are currently in hospitals. The city - which last week came down to the second worst-hit city (after Pune district moved to the top slot) in terms of Covid cases - is witnessing an average of less than 1,000 new cases daily, the recovery rate is 80 percent, doubling rate of cases is 86 days, and infection rate is 0.8 percent - among the lowest anywhere. The situation has eased to the extent that since late June, the BMC started moving out of Dharavi, and later shut down several small or medium quarantine facilities in the city. Patients are now being referred to the jumbo facilities at NSCI, Mahalaxmi Race Court, <keyword id="102951" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bandra-Kurla-Complex">Bandra Kurla Complex</keyword> and in Dahisar and Mulund to ensure centralised care. Amid apprehensions of patients unable to get beds, the current bed strength is 16,075 for complicated or serious cases, 23,437 for mild and asymptomatic patients besides 10,525 oxygen beds, 1,844 ICU beds and 1,096 ventilator beds. Of these, nearly 14,548 are vacant, but ready for operationalisation whenever required, besides 330 vacant in ICUs, giving a very comfortable position, said Chahal. Buoyed by the success of the 'Chase the Virus' game, the state government is now implementing it in Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Pune, Aurangabad, Solapur, Nashik, Jalgaon and other upcoming hotspots even as the Mumbai Corona crisis has practically been 'chased' away. Philippines government to follow India's ‘Dharavi model’ to fight coronavirus

Mumbai, Jul 2 () The number of coronavirus patients in Dharavi, Mumbai's biggest slum sprawl, increased to 2,301 on Thursday with the addition of 19 cases, a senior official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. The civic body, however, has not been disclosing the number of deaths due to the infection from the slum since the last few days without specifying the reason. Till last week, Dharavi's COVID-19 death toll was 82. Dharavi now has only 551 active COVID-19 cases, as 1,664 patients have been discharged post recovery, the BMC official said. Dharavi is the largest slum in Asia spread over 2.5 square kilometres of area and has a population of around 6.5 lakh. KK NP NP

Mumbai, May 29 () The tally of COVID-19 cases in Dharavi, Mumbai's largest slum, rose to 1,715 on Friday after 41 more people tested positive for the infection, an official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. No new death was reported in Dharavi, due to which the toll remained unchanged at 70, the official said. Of the 41 new patients, as many as seven were found in Matunga Labour Camp locality of Dharavi alone, he said. Dharavi, considered as the largest slum sprawl of Asia, has a population of over 6.5 lakh living in an area spread over 2.5 square kilometres. KK NP NP

Mumbai, May 27 () Dharavi, Mumbai's biggest slum sprawl, on Wednesday reported 18 new COVID-19 cases, taking the count of such patients in the area to 1,639, an official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. No death due to the deadly infection was reported in Dharavi in the last 24 hours, the official said. However, the name of a COVID-19 patient, who had died earlier, was added in the list of the deceased on Wednesday, which took the death toll in the area to 61, he added. According to the official, Wednesday's number of 18 coronavirus positive cases is the lowest single day count reported from Dharavi in the month of May so far. KK NP NP

The civic body has, however, stopped disclosing the number of deaths from the slum dominated area since the last few days without specifying any reason. The BMC official said that Dharavi now has only 551 active COVID-19 cases, as 1,672 patients have been discharged post recovery. Dharavi's COVID-19 case doubling rate is 140 days as per the average of last seven days and its average growth rate is 0.55 per cent, he said. Mumbai, Jun 4 () As 23 more people tested coronavirus positive, the tally of such cases in Dharavi, Mumbai's biggest slum sprawl, rose to 1,872 on Thursday, a senior official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. However, as no COVID-19 fatality was reported in Dharavi in the last 24 hours, the death toll there remained unchanged at 71, the official said. Dharavi is located in G-North administrative ward of the BMC, which has so far registered the highest number of 2,820 COVID-19 cases among all the 24 wards. Of them, as many as 1,872 cases are from Dharavi alone, followed by 574 and 347 cases from Mahim and Dadar, respectively, from the same ward. Dharavi is one of the biggest slums in Asia where nearly 15 lakh people live in small shanties, making it one of the most congested areas of the metropolis. KK NP NP

Mumbai's coronavirus count rises by 933; 34 more deaths

New Delhi, Apr 23 () In the time of coronavirus crisis, CSIR's Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology, which is known for research on minerals, has come up with foot-operated wash basins that will be installed in Mumbai's Dharavi -- a densely-populated slum area which has so far reported 189 cases of the infection.These wash basins are such that users do not have to use their hands to get water or soap, thus helping in minimising the chance of coronavirus spread."An important contribution from @csirimmt towards #CSIRFightsCovid19 by developing hands free washing stations which will be deployed at Dharavi, Mumbai (sic)," the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), a department under the Ministry of Science and Technology, tweeted.Guidelines issued by the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser earlier this month, had specifically recommended foot-operated wash basins for Dharavi.Known to be the biggest slum in Asia, Dharavi in north-central Mumbai is one of the major coronavirus hotspots. Until Wednesday, the densely populated slum in Mumbai had 189 COVID-19 cases with 12 deaths. Mumbai alone has reported 3,754 cases so far.Designed by IMMT scientist P C Deuria and technical officer R K Mondal the foot-operated machine has pedals. Pressing one will dispense soap, while another will release water, director of the Bhubaneshwar-based institute Suddhasatwa Basu said. "With no hand contact, this will help in curbing contamination," Basu told , adding they will hand it over mostly to the Brihnamumbai Municipal Corporation. He said they installed the wash basin at the institute's gate on the very first day of the lockdown."We then developed it further. From mild steel, we made changes and used stainless steel. Changes were also made in faucets that dispensed less water but with effective flow," Basu said.The challenge was to produce it in mass quantity.With the lockdown in force, no raw material was available. They then approached the Medium and Small and Micro Enterprises in Bhubaneshwar, especially those who deal in building metals doors and windows and roped them to manufacture it.The foot-operated wash basins were also given to local authorities in Bhubaneshwar, Basu said. 	Tech-enabled budget hotel start-up, Treebo partnered with a host of NGOs and organised an educational tour for 33 underprivileged children in Bangalore. Their two day stay at a hotel which was accompanied by tours around the city museums and monuments is a one of its kind initiative, named ‘Junior checks-in’.
 

	“We tied up with NGOs because we genuinely feel that travel can contribute to the growth and learning of any individual, particularly kids. We felt that these kids who don’t have all the privileges never get the opportunity to travel and use travel to expand their learning horizon,” said Gupta, adding that they plan to conduct such tours once every quarter.
 Treebo partnered with several NGOs engaged in welfare of underprivileged kids across the country, including <keyword id="828816" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Salaam">Salaam</keyword> Baalak Trust, Divya Deepa Charitable Trust, IDEA Foundation, and CHETNA. <keyword id="6368965" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="ZoomCar">Zoomcar</keyword>, a self drive car rental company, partnered with Infant Jesus Charity Home, a voluntary, non- government and non- profit organization dedicated to give love and understanding to orphaned and underprivileged children. They took the children for a joy ride on the occasion of Diwali this year, 2015. Zoomcar also partnered with Janagraha and launched #mycleanbangalore encouraging its customers to take a resolution to keep the city clean and green. 

	There are also start-ups which does the work of an NGO by being a for-profit enterprise. Shop For a Cause, online shopping portal tied up with NGOs that promote handicrafts made by tribal women and are promoting them in their online shopping site.
 Talking about Chennai floods, the contribution of the start-ups cannot be mentioned enough. Apart from food delivery and mobile payment start-ups, technology start-ups too came forward to enable technology based relief operations which turned out to create a huge difference. One such Delhi-based data startup <keyword id="2591749" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="SocialCops">Socialcops</keyword> is working with NGO Bhumi with relief operations by providing better data, technology and efficiency in identifying the worst hit areas. There are also start-ups that work closely with slums. Through a tie-up with NGO Diwya, which works with kids in Dharavi, Mumbai's biggest slum, <keyword id="2556777" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Timesaverz">Timesaverz</keyword>, on demand home services marketplace, is distributing anything its customers want to give away to these needy children. 

	These start-ups have started a trend which is afst catching up in the startup boom in India. Hope this catches up with every corporates and government of the country too.
