The draft is over, most of the big names in free agency are off the market, and trade negotiations are likely to be put on pause until games resume and teams and players get restless.While there may still be some action to come, for the most part, things are settled. Here's our look at the biggest winners and losers of the NBA offseason.<div type="image" title="LeBron James Anthony Davis" height="805" width="1611" msid="85281505" hostid="261"></div><h2>WINNERS: <keyword id="100883" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Los-Angeles-Lakers">Los Angeles Lakers</keyword></h2>Biggest additions: Russell Westbrook (G), Carmelo Anthony (F), Trevor Ariza (F), Dwight Howard (C), Malik Monk (G), Kendrick Nunn (G), Wayne Ellington (G), Kent Bazemore (F)Biggest departures: Dennis Schroder (G), Montrezl Harrell (C), Alex Caruso (G), Kyle Kuzma (F), Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (G/F)Why they're winners: The Lakers assembled a new team around LeBron James and Anthony Davis. They're light on shooting and athleticism, and there are legitimate jokes to be made about the age of the roster, but the Lakers did excellent work with very few assets. Landing Monk and Nunn, two young, athletic scorers and ball-handlers who can space the floor, was huge for this roster. They'll be the favorites to come out of the West once again.<h2>LOSERS: Lakers medical staff</h2>Why they're losers: The Lakers are going to try to balance bringing an entirely new roster together while keeping LeBron James (36), Carmelo Anthony (37), Dwight Howard (35), Marc Gasol (36), Trevor Ariza (36), Russell Westbrook (32), Wayne Ellington (32), Kent Bazemore (32), and the oft-injured Anthony Davis fresh for the postseason. The Lakers' medical staff will have their work cut out for them!<h2><div type="image" title="Kemba Walker dribbles a basketball" height="1125" width="1500" msid="85281507" hostid="261"></div>WINNERS: <keyword id="111553" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="New-York-Knicks">New York Knicks</keyword></h2>Biggest additions: Kemba Walker (G), Evan Fournier (G/F)Biggest departures: Reggie Bullock (G/F), Elfrid Payton (G)Why they're winners: Landing Kemba Walker on a risk-free, two-year, $18 million contract may be the best value deal of the offseason. New York focused on continuity while adding shooting and ball-handling, two areas of need. A four-year deal for Evan Fournier and three-year deals for Alec Burks, Derrick Rose, and Nerlens Noel were head-scratching at first, but the Knicks own team options in the last year of all of those contracts. The Knicks look deeper and more talented than last year and squarely in the playoff race.<h2>LOSER: Dennis Schroder</h2>Why he's a loser: Schroder gambled on himself by turning down a four-year, $80 million extension with the Lakers. The market Schroder hoped for never presented itself, and he was soon one of the best free agents remaining after many teams had already spent their cap space. He ended up joining the Celtics on a one-year, $5.9 million contract, meaning he'll have to prove himself again this season, then try for a long-term deal all over again.<h2>WINNERS: Veteran point guards not named Schroder</h2><div type="image" title="Chris Paul (3) of the Phoenix Suns during the fourth quarter of Phoenix's series-clinching 125-118 win at Ball Arena on Sunday, June 13, 2021." height="1339" width="1785" msid="85281509" hostid="261"></div>Why they're winners: The aging curve has changed in the NBA, and many of today's players can remain effective in their 30s. Free agency bore this out: 36-year-old Chris Paul signed a $120 million deal with the Suns, 35-year-old Kyle Lowry signed a $90 million with the Heat, 33-year-old Mike Conley signed a $74 million contract with the Jazz. Even 32-year-old Derrick Rose got $42 million from the Knicks.<h2>LOSERS: Portland Trail Blazers:</h2>Biggest additions: Cody Zeller (C), Tony Snell (F)Biggest departures: Carmelo Anthony (F), Zach Collins (F/C), Enes Kanter (C)Why they're losers: With the caveat that the Blazers had little maneuverability - no cap space, few draft picks, no coveted young players - they didn't do much to improve a team on the brink of implosion. After a second straight first-round playoff exit, the Blazers are essentially banking on better health and better production under a new head coach. They better hope it works because Damian Lillard has said he is weighing his future with the franchise and wants to see improvement.<h2>WINNER: John Collins</h2>Why he's a winner: Collins made headlines for reportedly turning down a $90 million extension with the Atlanta Hawks before the 2020-21 season. He had a decent season, but not one that necessarily screamed "max player" - yet he re-signed with the Hawks on a five-year, $125 million contract. A gamble that paid off!<h2>LOSERS: New Orleans Pelicans</h2>Biggest additions: Jonas Valanciunas (C), Devonte Graham (G), Tomas Satoransky (G/F), Garrett Temple (G/F)Biggest departures: Lonzo Ball (G), Eric Bledsoe (G), Steven Adams (C)Why they're losers: Between the firing of Stan Van Gundy after one year, murmurs that Zion Williamson's family is unhappy in New Orleans, and the departure of Lonzo Ball (who Pelicans players vouched for) on the first day of free agency, there aren't great vibes around the Pelicans these days. The offseason additions are only so-so fits. Perhaps Williamson and Brandon Ingram will make big enough leaps this year to push the Pelicans into playoff contention, but it feels like a once-promising rebuild is moving laterally.<div type="image" title="Brandon Ingram walks in front of Zion Williamson during a game in March 2021." height="1000" width="2000" msid="85281511" hostid="261"></div><h2>WINNERS: Centers</h2>Why they're winners: Jarrett Allen led the way for centers this offseason, getting a $100 million contract from the Cavs. Several other big men got decent paydays: $55 million for Richaun Holmes, $37 million for Kelly Olynyk, $36 million for Daniel Theis, $32 million for Nerlens Noel. The notion that centers are dead has long been proven false, and big men clearly still hold value in today's NBA.<h2>LOSER: Andre Drummond</h2>Why he's a loser: Unfortunately for Drummond, the centers-getting-paid trend did not extend to him. Over the past year, Drummond has been bought out by the Cavs, signed to the Lakers with the idea that he'd be a long-term piece, and then benched in the playoffs. He signed a veteran's minimum deal with the 76ers to back up Joel Embiid, which, barring an injury to Embiid, won't be a huge role.<h2>WINNERS: Charlotte Hornets</h2><div type="image" title="LaMelo Ball dribbles during a game." height="1125" width="1500" msid="85281514" hostid="261"></div>Biggest additions: Kelly Oubre Jr. (F), Mason Plumlee (C), Ish Smith (G), James Bouknight (G - R)Biggest departures: Devonte Graham (G), Cody Zeller (C)Why they're winners: The Hornets are the playoff contender not getting much buzz (pun intended!). Kelly Oubre adds extra size and skill on the wing, rookie guard James Bouknight is expected to be an NBA-level scorer right away, and the Hornets will have Gordon Hayward and LaMelo Ball healthy again. Charlotte should be right in the mix for the 6-8 seeds in the East.<h2>LOSERS (kind of): Philadelphia 76ers</h2>Biggest additions: Andre Drummond (C), Georges Niang (F/C)Biggest departures: Dwight Howard (C), George Hill (G)Why they're losers (kind of): It's never bad to bring back a team that finished first in the East, but it's fair to question if the Sixers needed a shake-up. The Sixers have had early playoff exits the last two years, and Ben Simmons, coming off a poor postseason, is clearly on the trade block. They still do not have enough shooting or shot creation around Embiid. A Simmons trade (say, for Damian Lillard) is still on the table, but can Philly coexist until (if?) that happens?<h2>WINNERS: <keyword id="509520" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Miami-Heat">Miami Heat</keyword></h2><div type="image" title="kyle lowry" height="946" width="1262" msid="85281516" hostid="261"></div>Biggest additions: Kyle Lowry (G), P.J. Tucker (F/C), Markieff Morris (F)Biggest departures: Goran Dragic (G), Precious Achiuwa (C)Why they're winners: Give the Heat credit for always being all-in. Landing Kyle Lowry was perhaps the biggest move of the offseason, giving the Heat a two-way, versatile guard who can steer the ship. P.J. Tucker and Markieff Morris add size and toughness. Getting anything from the talented but oft-injured Victor Oladipo (back on a shocking veteran's minimum deal) would be a bonus for Miami. The asterisk on this team: outside of a run in the Disney bubble, the Heat have not played like a true contender over the last two seasons. Is Lowry enough to get them there, or are they just a good team that's still outside of the Brooklyn-Milwaukee realm atop the East?<h2>LOSERS: NBA tampering investigations</h2>Why they're losers: The NBA decided to crack down on tampering, beginning last year with penalizing the Milwaukee Bucks for agreeing to a sign-and-trade for Bogdan Bogdanovic before free agency began. They are now investigating the Kyle Lowry-Heat signing and Lonzo Ball-Bulls signings. As NBA reported Marc Stein noted, dozens of deals are done before free agency opens, and virtually all teams and agents are in on it. These investigations seem largely needless and mostly for show.<h2>SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN: Chicago Bulls</h2>Biggest additions: Lonzo Ball (G), DeMar DeRozan (G/F), Alex Caruso (G)Biggest departures: Thaddeus Young (F/C), Tomas Satoransky (G/F), Garrett Temple (G/F)Why they're in-between: Perhaps the splashiest offseason has also created one of the more confusing teams. In adding Lonzo Ball and DeMar DeRozan, the Bulls added offensive punch and talent to their core of Zach Lavine, Nikola Vucevic, Patrick Williams, and Coby White. This team should score a lot of points and out-talent plenty of teams over the slog of an 82-game season. Yet the Bulls have given up three first-round picks to land Vucevic and DeRozan. The foursome of Ball, LaVine, DeRozan, and Vucevic will make $89 million this season, and LaVine is due for a max contract next offseason (and has earned it). Their defense might take away any gains they make on offense. It feels like Chicago might have gone all-in on a team that could be the 5th seed.

Regardless of whether or not it works out for the Jaguars, it's a boon for Walker, who goes down as the first defensive player taken No. 1 since Myles Garrett in 2017.<h2>WINNER: Hometown heroes</h2>After the Jaguars took Walker first overall, the door was open for the Detroit Lions to draft standout Michigan edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson.Hutchinson broke the Wolverines' single-season sack record last year, and now will get to continue playing close to home as he begins his NFL career.<div type="image" title="Aidan Hutchinson poses after being drafted by the Detroit Lions." height="1600" width="2133" msid="91188618" hostid="261"></div>"I think it would be cool to stay around Michigan and be close to my family," <a href="https://www.insider.com/aidan-hutchinson-ready-to-learn-nfl-draft-jaguars-lions-2022-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hutchinson told Insider earlier in the week</a> when asked of the prospect of getting drafted by the Lions. "I'm sure it'd make the transition to the NFL easier. I think there's a lot of positives either way."Hutchinson isn't the only potential superstar that will get to stay close to home.North Carolina State offensive tackle Ikem Ekwonu was taken by the Carolina Panthers with the sixth overall pick, and Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett was taken by the Pittsburgh Steelers at No. 20.With a large contingency of Steelers fans in attendance in Vegas, Pickett's selection earned one of the loudest reactions of the night.<h2>WINNER: Somehow, both the New York Giants and New York Jets</h2>With four top-10 picks between them, there was a lot of potential for the New York football collective to mess things up pretty bad at the 2022 NFL Draft. Instead, both teams, somewhat shockingly, crushed it.For the Giants, finding a quality edge rusher and offensive tackle were both top priorities. When they were set to make their first pick of the night, at No. 5, one elite edge prospect (Kayvon Thibodeaux) and two elite tackle prospects (Ikem Ekwonu, Evan Neal) were left on the board.Since the Giants were also picking at No. 7, New York smartly played their hand, selecting Thibodeaux fifth overall, knowing that regardless of who the Panthers took at No. 6, one of the best tackles in the draft would still be there at No. 7. Carolina went with Ekwonu, leaving the Giants to take Neal, who might have been the highest-rated tackle on their board anyway.Largely, the Giants' success was a result of not overthinking their picks, but credit where it's due, that's a hell of a duo to start the new season with.Similarly, the New York Jets found great value in both of their top-10 picks. The Jets were able to grab possibly the best cornerback to come out of this draft class in Cincinnati's Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner, at No. 4, and followed that up by taking a player that could possibly be the best receiver to come out of this draft class in Ohio State's Garrett Wilson, at No. 10.<div type="image" title="Jermaine Johnson celebrates his selection in the 2022 NFL Draft with a group of Jets fans." height="1600" width="2133" msid="91188620" hostid="261"></div>But the Jets' success didn't stop there. As Florida State edge rusher Jermaine Johnson began to fall past where many had him projected, New York found a trade partner in the Tennessee Titans and were able to move back into the first round to snag Johnson at No. 26.Heading into the draft, the Jets needed help all across the roster. In one night, they found players that could prove to be foundational pieces at three key positions for years to come.<h2>WINNER: Howie Roseman</h2>It's hard to imagine anyone having a better night than the young players drafted on Thursday, but if anyone did, it was Eagles general manager Howie Roseman.Heading into the draft, Philadelphia was armed with two first-round picks, one of which had already been swapped with New Orleans ahead of Thursday.With his first move, Roseman traded up from No. 15 to No. 13 to pick Georgia defensive tackle Jordan Davis. Not only is Davis a dynamic run-stuffer already, he will also get a year to learn the craft from Eagles veteran Fletcher Cox before eventually stepping into his sizeable cleats as the anchor of the team's defensive front.But Roseman's biggest move of the night came next, as the Eagles flipped the No. 18 pick to the Tennessee Titans along with a third-rounder in exchange for star wide receiver A.J. Brown.As the 18th pick was approaching, many of the top receiving prospects were already off the board. Rather than draft yet another wide receiver that might not work out — it's a position the Eagles have struggled to draft with the exception of DeVonta Smith last year — Roseman instead negotiated a deal for a receiver everyone already knows can dominate in the NFL.It was a deal that shocked Eagles center Jason Kelce live on air."Howie Roseman is working that Howie Roseman magic," Kelce said. "He's moving up in the draft to get Jordan Davis, and now he's trading to get an unbelievable receiver. This is like Christmas right now."Howie is a man on a mission right now, man. He's making things happen, and I'm a big fan."<h2>LOSER: Arizona Cardinals</h2>The Cardinals also made a deal for a wide receiver, trading the No. 23 pick away to the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for Marquise "Hollywood" Brown.On another day, the Cardinals' deal for Brown might have raised a few eyebrows and little else, but with the immediate comparison to the deal the Eagles pulled off with the Titans, Hollywood's move to Arizona suddenly looks less appealing.To be sure, this is a trade that could still work out fantastically for the Cardinals. Brown is a dynamic player and is being reunited with his college quarterback, Kyler Murray. The two are certainly capable of making sparks fly.Still, given the price the Eagles paid for A.J. Brown, it's a tough comparison.<h2>LOSER: Lamar Jackson</h2>The Hollywood Brown trade came as a shock to the entire NFL, but no one was more surprised than Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.It would be rather strange to learn that one of your friends is moving away by watching television, but there's a lot about the life of an NFL quarterback that is rather strange.<h2>WINNER: Wide receivers</h2>There was a ton of wide receiver talent up for grabs in Thursday's first round, and clearly front offices around the league were aware of it.From picks No. 8-18, a whopping six wide receivers were selected — Drake London to the Falcons (No. 7), Garrett Wilson to the Jets (No. 10), Chris Olave to the Saints (No. 11), Jameson Williams to the Lions (No. 12), Jahan Dotson to the Commanders (No. 16), and Treylon Burks (No. 18) to the Titans.Given the instant impact that the likes of Ja'Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson have had in their recent rookie seasons, expectations are high for this group. It's going to be fun to look back on this group in four or five years.<h2>LOSER: Aaron Rodgers</h2>Another year, another draft with the Green Bay Packers refusing to draft for Aaron Rodgers. Despite all of that receiving talent available this year, the Packers didn't make a move to get Rodgers another pair of trusted hands. Green Bay's refusal to give Rodgers another target is magnified by the recent departure of Davante Adams.With the Packers sitting out of the receiving pool through the first round, look for Green Bay to be major players in the potential market for 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who recently asked for a trade from San Francisco.<h2>WINNER: Georgia Bulldogs</h2>The 2021 Georgia Bulldogs defense was one of the greatest defenses in the history of college football.On Thursday, they cemented their claim further, breaking the NFL record for most defensive players taken in the first round from one school.The five Bulldogs that went off the board were: Travon Walker to the Lions (No. 1), Jordan Davis to the Eagles (No. 13), Quay Walker and Devonte Wyatt to the Packers (Nos. 22 and 28), and Lewis Cine to the Vikings (No. 32).Additionally, linebacker Nakobe Dean is still on the board, and could be taken with one of the first picks of the second round on Friday.<h2>WINNER: Trading up to get your guy</h2>Trades make the draft, and Thursday's first round was full of exciting moves. Further, there's something inherently nice about teams moving up to get their guy. Simply put, it's nice to be wanted.In their press conferences after getting drafted, several players, including Jordan Davis and Devin Lloyd, expressed appreciation for their teams' making the effort to trade up for them.Trades on draft day make the entire experience more exciting to watch and in some cases, leave players feeling warm and fuzzy inside. Feels like a win-win.<h2>WINNER: The Las Vegas Draft</h2>Heading to the NFL Draft in Las Vegas, I didn't know what to expect. Of all the things to turn into Coachella, "NFL teams hiring people," is about as strange a choice as you can make.
