However, the realty sector is one of the worst hit by the pandemic. And, according to analysts, the industry is facing its worst slowdown in the last five years. This risk is compounded by the fact that Macrotech Developers also has high indebtedness, which will partially be financed by the funds it raises from its ₹2,500 crore initial public offering (IPO). Considering that most of the company's projects are based out of the Mumbai Metro Region (MMR), its debt may be a cause for concern. The capital intensive and high indebtedness should be a hurdle when looking for further financing. “The high leverage ratio limits the scope of the company to absorb any shocks of unforeseen events,” said <keyword id="6357264" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="capital-market">Capital Market</keyword> in its review. Others, like <keyword id="197560" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Securities">Reliance Securities</keyword>, believe that while there are risk factors involved, the IPO seems to be reasonably priced as compared to its competitors, like Godrej Properties and DLF, at a price band of ₹482 to ₹486. The draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) shows that Macrotech Developers’ aggregate debt stood at ₹18,662.19 crore as of 31 December 2020. “Macrotech Developers’ plan to reduce net debt to ₹12,700 crore in the coming quarters negates concerns over high levering. Further, strong project portfolio and monetisation of huge land banks offer comfort,” said Reliance Securities in its report. The company currently has 91 completed projects under its belt with another 36 in the works. This includes plans to develop a logistics and industrial park of over 800 acres in Mumbai, near Palava. “If the company does not have access to funds required on favourable terms, it may be required to delay or abandon some or all planned projects or reduce the scale of operations,” noted Capital Markets. So, if you have the shares and are concerned that there’s been a loss on premium, keep the stock if you have the patient. Why are investors wary of Macrotech Developers? One of the reasons for investors to be wary was the company’s high level of debt. Around ₹1,500 crore of funds from the IPO will go towards repaying lenders to ease its balance sheets. But that doesn’t mean that it won’t need more money, which brings us two the second reason investors were vary about putting their money into the offer. Marcotech Developers is operating in a capital intensive sector, the real estate industry, during a pandemic. Any delays due to a lockdown, curfew or the implementation of restrictions like Section 144, could add to its costs — especially since the majority of its projects are in India’s financial capital, Mumbai. The city has been one of the worst hit in all of India during the second wave of the pandemic. “If the company does not have access to funds required on favourable terms, it may be required to delay or abandon some or all planned projects or reduce the scale of operations,” noted Capital Markets in its preview. The brokerage pointed out that the company has earlier difficulties in serving its debt. It was among the companies that availed the moratorium offered by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for six months during the pandemic, from March to August 2020. The size of Macrotech Developers has its own loopholes The problem with Macrotech Developers possibly having to reduce its scale of operations due to the uncertainty propagated by the pandemic is that it’s one thing it has playing in its favour. Macrotech Developers is one of the largest players in the Indian real estate market going up against behemoths like Godrej Properties, Sunteck Realty, and Oberoi Realty. And so far, it has consistently outperformed all its peers when it comes to sales, as per Hem Securities. It has a strong distribution network, not just in India, but in foreign markets like the UK, the US, Singapore and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). But even that comes with its own loopholes. “Large construction projects in all parts of the world provide opportunities for corruption, fraud or improper conduct, including bribery, deliberate poor workmanship, theft or embezzlement by employees, contractors or customers or the deliberate supply of low-quality materials, which may delay development of projects,” said Capital Market’s report. Lodha Developers files papers for ₹2,500 crore IPO — will it be a third time charm?

When it comes to Sustainable Development Goals, India ranks quite low in the index. Out of 149 countries, India ranked at 110th spot as per a new index. 
 
Sweden topped the Sustainable Development Goals. 
 
The index was launched by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and the Bertelsmann Stiftung. 
 
The index collected available data for 149 countries to assess where each country stands in 2016 with regard to achieving the SDGs. 
 
It ranks countries based on their performance across the 17 global goals, a set of ambitious objectives across the three dimensions of sustainable development - economic development, social inclusion and environmental sustainability, underpinned by good governance. 
 
The index helps countries identify priorities for early actions and shows that every country faces major challenges in achieving the SDGs. 
 
"The Sustainable Development Goals are stretch goals, but they are within reach if countries work towards them with clarity and determination. The SDG Index and Dashboard can help each country to chart out a practical path for achieving the Goals," said SDSN Director Jeffrey Sachs. 
 
The countries which are closest to fulfilling the goals are not the biggest economies but comparably small, developed countries. 
Sweden tops the chart and is followed by Denmark and Norway on the top three performing countries. 
 
Germany (6) and the UK(10) are the only G7 countries to be found among the top ten performers. The US ranks 25th on the index, while Russia and China rank 47th and 76th respectively. 
 
India ranks 110th on the list followed by Lesotho on 113th position, Pakistan (115), Myanmar (117), Bangladesh (118) and Afghanistan (139). Poor and <keyword id="54124" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="developing-countries">developing countries</keyword> understandably score lowest on the SDG Index as they often have comparably little resources at their disposal. 
The Central African Republic and Liberia are at the bottom of the Index and still have the longest way to go in achieving the SDGs. 
 
A year after world leaders adopted the SDGs, the new index shows that all countries face major challenges in achieving these ambitious goals by 2030. 
 
No country has achieved the SDGs and even top Sweden scores "red" on several goals. 
 
The report shows how leaders can deliver on their promise and urges countries not to lose the momentum for important reforms. 
In order to achieve the ambitious goals, immediate and comprehensive action is needed in the crucial first years of implementation of the new global agenda, it noted. 
 
The report highlights major challenges per region: Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries struggle to meet the goals on inequality, sustainable consumption, climate change and ecosystems, while many developing countries face major difficulties in providing basic social services and infrastructure access to their populations. 
 
East and South Asia outperform many other developing regions but unmet challenges persist in health and education. 
 
For Latin America and the Caribbean, high levels of inequality are among the most pressing issues. 
 
In spite of significant progress in recent years in Sub-Saharan Africa, the world's poorest region faces major challenges across almost all SDGs, with extreme poverty, hunger and health as major areas where substantial improvement is needed.

Out of 149 nations, India is at 110th spot on Sustainable Development Goals index

The government is working on a sophisticated framework for the public-private partnership (PPP) model to promote <keyword id="174143" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="infrastructure-development">infrastructure development</keyword>, Finance Secretary <keyword id="374766" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arvind-Mayaram">Arvind Mayaram</keyword> has said. 
 
"What we need to do is to have a more sophisticated PPP framework which we are working on now. Which means a framework that looks at PPPs in a manner where there's flexibility to factor in the changes in the circumstances that run over a period of 25-30 years," he said at a Ficci event. 
 Mayaram also highlighted the need to de-stress the <keyword id="457507" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="PPP-model">PPP model</keyword>, which is facing various regulatory hurdles. "There's a strong case to see whether we can look at developing a framework which is going to decide what stress is, who is responsible for stress, what is causing the stress and how we deal with it?... We would meet to now look at what a stress is and how it can be defined," he said. 
 
Regarding the risks associated with PPP projects, Mayaram said that the government alone cannot take the whole responsibility, adding that the risk should be shared between the private sector and the government.

Improving labour market conditions and consumer confidence will drive growth in private consumption, ADB said, adding that the central government's commitment to significantly increase capital expenditure in FY24 despite targeting a lower fiscal deficit of 5.9 per cent of GDP will also spur demand. Helped by a recovery in tourism and other contact services, the services sector will grow strongly in FY24 and FY25 as the impact of COVID-19 wanes, it said. However, ADB noted that manufacturing growth in FY24 is expected to be tamped down by a weak global demand but it will likely improve in FY25. Recent announcements to boost agricultural productivity such as setting up digital services for crop planning and support for agriculture startups will be important in sustaining agriculture growth in the medium term. "Inflation will likely moderate to 5 per cent in 2023-24, assuming moderation in oil and food prices, and slow further to 4.5 per cent in 2024-25 as inflationary pressures subside," it said. In tandem, ADB said that monetary policy in FY24 is expected to be tighter as core inflation persists while becoming more accommodative in FY25. The current account deficit is projected to decline to 2.2 per cent of GDP in FY24 and 1.9 per cent in FY25. Growth in goods exports is forecast to moderate in FY24 before improving in 2024 as production-linked incentive schemes and efforts to improve the business environment such as streamlined labour regulations, improved performance in electronics and other areas of manufacturing growth. Services export growth has been robust and is expected to continue to strengthen India's overall balance of payments position. India's growth to moderate to 6.4% in FY24: Asian Development Bank

The <keyword id="166486" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Millennium-Development-Goals">Millennium Development Goals</keyword> (MDGs), which draw near to completion in 2015, have given way to the new <keyword id="55804" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="sustainable-development">Sustainable Development</keyword> Goals (SDGs) la<keyword id="6355835" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="UN">un</keyword>ched at the UN General Assembly. The event and an array of other events including the SDG Business Forum, the Social Good Summit and the Clinton Global Initiative saw large participation from various stakeholders. 
	
		In understanding and evaluating the presentations at these events, some of the pertinent points that look seemingly obvious are: First, few presentations gave any indication of serious learning from the wins-- and losses--during 20 years of MDG work. A delineation of the models that work (i.e., more sustainable and scalable) is seen as clearly missing. Second, in the absence of learning frameworks, presenters reiterate the same problems, now expanded to 17 goals and 169 targets. The result is a plea for more resources to support the new SDGs without any evidence that those resources will be employed more effectively. Third, the core request at these events was for more than four trillion dollars per year to implement the SDGs over 15 years. 
	 
	
		This logically leads to two important questions i.e., how can you call the goals replacing the MDGs sustainable if they lead with requests for resources that are not? At the beginning of the SDG process, what should the worlds’ governments, corporates and NGO leaders focus on now to make the new global goals actually sustainable?
	 
	
		Answering these questions is at the heart of societal businesses value creation that seeks to find the most innovative and sustainable models for solving intractable challenges. Societal business search firms have advocated tirelessly the need to identify models that 1) can be scaled and 2) are not reliant on non-profit funding (which is donation-dependent and driven by the dictates of donors.) 
	 
	
		The best models that have found have had social entrepreneurs at the helm who see the world differently. They frequently take the “against” position (<a href="http://goo.gl/XHWj6x">http://goo.gl/XHWj6x</a>). For instance, in branding, claiming the against position means using a competitor’s dominant spend and mindshare to carve out an anti-space—the Un-cola for example. Social entrepreneurs are quintessential against positioners. [Microfinance inventor] Mohammed Yunus stated it clearly: “I looked at how traditional banks do business and we did the opposite.” In very practical terms, these stubborn, opinionated entrepreneurs frequently show up after the aid and development models have failed or at least failed to become sustainable. Their arrival on the scene is less a ‘Kumbaya’ moment and more a “disruptive innovation” one.
	 
	
		Social entrepreneurs are relentlessly focused on what they have learned. Their conversations highlight the innovations that are rolled into ingenious, often cross-sector models and as the people who use these models to solve their own and others problems. Their resource requests are framed by why their model should be scaled and how it can replace less effective approaches. The primary goal for these innovative social entrepreneurs is to demonstrate that appropriate capacity building and scale enables their hybrid or for-profit innovation models to solve problems sustainably, thus reducing dependence on fundraising. 
	 
	
		To deliberate on these emerging business models The Shared Value Summit 2015, is being organized by Shared Value India on November 20th, 2015 (<a href="http://sharedvalue.in/svs2015/">http://sharedvalue.in/svs2015/</a>). The summit will see participation from various stakeholders who will deliberate and discuss key opportunities that businesses can and are leveraging to create societal value. 
	 
	
		Already, social entrepreneurs have offered five critical solutions to the problem of making the Sustainable Development Goals truly sustainable: First, recognizing that any commitment to achieving the SDGs must avoid Einstein’s famous definition of insanity: Doing the same thing and expecting different results. Second, authentic commitment to the SDGs requires leaders to recognize one simple reality: It is not possible to have sustainable development goals without sustainable models that leverage under-utilized resources. Third, serious SDG innovators recognize that the current donor, foreign aid and resource investment processes are not sustainable. They call attention to inadequacies and offer new models and leadership to move significant resources from unsustainable models to sustainable models. Fourth, any leader pleading for more funding should be able to explain how his/her organization will deploy that funding to scale solutions that are more sustainable than those that failed to achieve most of the MDGs. Finally, significantly improved sustainability requires the ongoing evaluation of all investments, models and approaches employed. The most sustainable solutions should then be aggressively adopted across sector and country boundaries, no matter their origin or disruption.
	 
	
		Increasingly, leaders are being asked to challenge the status quo. These leaders—often disruptors—no longer target seed stage or individual impact investments. The most impactful leaders know that pilots do not lead to scaling or to sustainability. 
	 
	
		Social entrepreneurs thrive at risk taking and from learning rapidly about what doesn’t work. These are the sustainable, scale-oriented models and management teams that are best equipped to handle significant capital and to shift how these goals are achieved to sustainable development goals.

IBM, Accenture, Morgan Stanley and others hiring software developers and big data engineers

In economics generally speaking about something that is scare is valued more as compared to something that is relatively abundant. It explains why diamonds are more precious than coal. It appears to be largely true in the context of commodities but increasingly this is also being seen in the context of human lives especially between developed and developing countries. While the developed countries tend to focus more on human lives and to enhance the quality of human lives, the developing ones tend to focus on necessities and capital more. 
 
One possible explanation is that because we are so many, therefore, a loss of one or two lives becomes immaterial. While this argument defies logic, a certain faction tends to believe this as gospel truth and practicality. Such views coming from the educated elite in India is all the more appalling. 
 
Three recent cases point to the dignity of human lives in India, one of the most populous countries of the world. 
 The first case is of a <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> actor, who after taking liquor drove on the footpath that resulted in the death of one individual and injuring several others. He is alleged to have run away from the spot and his bodyguard, a police constable assigned to him, lodged the FIR. Thirteen years on the a ruling was given after which a bail was granted within a day. The police constable was fired after he did not show up on his duty due to alleged pressure post the event in 2006. He died of tuberculosis in a government hospital while the actor is still out on bail. 
 The second relates to the death of a 'farmer' in a political rally where the people, media, and the politicians stood as mute spectators looking on without stopping the individual performing the act. The PM speaking on the issue in <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> said, "Insaan ki Zindagi Se Badi Koi Cheez Nahi Hoti" - There is nothing more important than human life. While the statement made by the PM was an embodiment of the dignity of human life, the reality remains that a significant number of the common citizens are denied this very basic dignity of human life. 
 
The third case came to light a couple of days back where a professor was hit by a minister's car in Kerala. Though the minister rushed, the professor to the hospital callous driving on the part of the driver resulted in the death of an individual. The car being used, as a government vehicle was an industrialist owned Range Rover. 
 
These cases point to a deeper malaise on our part as a society. The first case reminds one of the Orwellian dystopia in his 'Animal Farm'- that all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others. What is tragic is we have indeed come to accept this as practicality. The second case points to the lack on our part as a society in understanding the value of human life and our apathy towards fellow citizens. The third case points to general callous and risky behavior on our part on roads that result in loss of lives. 
 All these make one wonder what is the value of a human life of a common citizen in India? Does a common person feel completely safe and secure in his country? And if not who is to be held responsible and accountable? For the first question, the three cases seem to suggest it is miniscule. For the second question, few people if at all do feel completely safe and secure. Finally, when it comes to accountability we as people are equally responsible for the failings of successive governments and institutions in creating a safe and secure society. While it is important to envision economic ideals and to improve the <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword> it is equally important to create a society that is equitable, just and humane.

Why is human life so cheap in the developing world and valued in the developed world?

As the ambitious <keyword id="3204746" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="2030-Development-Agenda">2030 Development Agenda</keyword> is starting to be implemented, India has demanded that the priorities and needs of developing countries must be kept at the centre of attention. 
 "The 2030 Agenda including the <keyword id="879547" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="sustainable-development-goals">Sustainable Development Goals</keyword> as well as the commitments contained in the <keyword id="3205079" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Addis-Ababa-Action-Agenda">Addis Ababa Action Agenda</keyword> must now be implemented expeditiously and in good faith," said <keyword id="882197" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Syed-Akbaruddin">Syed Akbaruddin</keyword>, India's new Permanent Representative to the UN. 
 
"In this process, the objectives, priorities and needs of the developing countries must remain the centre of attention, "Akbaruddin said. 
 He was speaking at the handover ceremony of the <keyword id="3205080" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="G77-Chairmanship">G77 Chairmanship</keyword> from South Africa to Thailand, which was his first speech at the world body after taking charge at the Permanent Mission of India here last week. He also said that if 2015 was a year of negotiation and deliberation, "2016 should be a time of consolidation and implementation." 
 He further added that India will be resolute in pushing for developing country unity and there would be no stone unturned to give special consideration to the interests of the <keyword id="484496" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="least-developed-countries">Least Developed Countries</keyword>, <keyword id="3205081" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Small-Island-Developing-States">Small Island Developing States</keyword> and <keyword id="3205082" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Landlocked-Developing-Countries">Landlocked Developing Countries</keyword>.

"This year there are heightened expectations for the directions the United Nations development system can take to support Agenda 2030. The test for success will always remain what happens on the ground," the UN Chief said. 
 
"We need to get this right so that our operational and normative work can converge and make a difference where it matters most -- at the country level," he added.
