The incident happened at 11.30 pm on Tuesday when seven coaches of Kamayani Express, bound for Varanasi, and five bogies of Janata Express, bound for Mumbai, were crossing the bridge in Harda, some 160 km from Bhopal.<br />

The mishap took place around 11.30 PM on Tuesday as base material of the tracks got washed away in heavy rains. Nearly 25 passengers suffered injuries," West Central Railway PRO Piyush Mathur told news agency PTI.<br />

Search operations have been launched and few coaches also fell in the river. Bhopal Railway PRO told PTI that more than 250 passengers were rescued so far.<br />

Meanwhile, Minister of State of Railways Ministry Manoj Sinha said it was not a manmade disaster but a natural calamity.<br />

Flash floods derail two trains in MP, over 24 dead, 25 injured

<p>In what one local official described as a scene from hell, bodies covered in blankets lay next to the overturned carriages as smoke billowed from the wreckage after the disaster.</p>
<p>Firefighters clambered desperately over the twisted metal trying to get survivors out of the windows, while ambulances and fire engines surrounded the scene. Cranes were still pulling out mangled debris on Thursday morning, 12 hours after the crash.</p>
<p>The government said it was working on the assumption the derailment was an <keyword id="6354769" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="accident">accident</keyword>.</p>
<p>One official source said speeding was a likely cause of the derailment, which occurred as the train reached a curve in the track, but the public works minister said it was too early to draw conclusions on what had happened.</p>
<p>El Pais newspaper cited sources close to the investigation as saying the train was travelling at over twice the speed limit on a sharp curve and Santiago's mayor said the train was probably going too fast.</p>
<p>"We heard a massive noise and we went down the tracks. I helped getting a few injured and bodies out of the train. I went into one of the cars but I'd rather not tell you what I saw there," Ricardo Martinez, a 47-year old baker from Santiago de Compostela, told Reuters.</p>

<p>The Santiago de Compostela train operated by state rail company Renfe, which had 247 people on board, derailed as the city prepared for the renowned festival of Saint James, when thousands of Christian pilgrims from across the world pack the streets.</p>
<p>The city's tourism board said all festivities, including the traditional High Mass at the centuries-old cathedral, had been cancelled as the city went into mourning following the crash.</p>
<p>Passenger Ricardo Montesco told Cadena Ser radio station the train approached the curve at high speed, twisted and wagons piled up one on top of the other.</p>
<p>"A lot of people were squashed on the bottom. We tried to squeeze out of the bottom of the wagons to get out and we realized the train was burning. ... I was in the second wagon and there was fire. ... I saw corpses," he said.</p>
<p>Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who was born in Santiago de Compostela, the capital of Galicia region, visited the site on Thursday morning. He was due to go to the main hospital later in the day and hold an emergency meeting with local authorities.</p>
<p>"In the face of a tragedy such as just happened in Santiago de Compostela on the eve of its big day, I can only express my deepest sympathy as a Spaniard and a Galician," he said in a written statement late on Wednesday.</p>

<p>Both Renfe and state-owned Adif, which is in charge of the tracks, had opened an investigation into the cause of the derailment, Renfe said.</p>
<p>The official source said no statement would be made regarding the cause until the black boxes of the train were examined, but said it was most likely an accident.</p>
<p>"We are moving away from the hypothesis of sabotage or attack," he said. "It's too early to be 100 percent sure but speeding is a likely cause for the accident."</p>
<p>Santiago mayor Angel Curras told Cadena Ser radio: "It seems the speed of the train was likely not the right one."</p>
<p>Clinics in Santiago de Compostela were overwhelmed with people flocking to give blood, while hotels organized free rooms for relatives. Madrid sent forensic scientists and hospital staff to the scene on special flights.</p>
<p>The <keyword id="6355784" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="death">death</keyword> toll was 78, a spokeswoman for Galicia's Supreme Court said, adding that the figures were still provisional. Judges in Spain are responsible for recording deaths.</p>
<p>Up to 131 people were injured, a Galicia-based spokeswoman for the office of the central government said earlier.</p>
<p>"The scene is shocking, it's Dante-esque," said the head of the surrounding Galicia region, Alberto Nunez Feijoo,in a radio interview. <p>The eight-carriage train was travelling from Madrid to Ferrol on the Galician coast when it derailed, Renfe said ina statement.</p>
<p>The disaster stirred memories of a train bombing in Madrid in 2004, carried out by Islamist militants, that killed 191 people, although officials do not appear to suspect an attack this time.</p>
<p>Spain is struggling to emerge from a long-running recession marked by government-driven austerity to bring its deeply indebted finances into order.</p>
<p>But Adif, the state railways infrastructure company, told Reuters no budget cuts had been implemented on maintenance of the line, which connects La Coruna, Santiago de Compostela and Ourense and was inaugurated in 2011.</p>
<p>It said more than 100 million euros a year were being spent on track maintenance in Spain.</p>
<p>Firefighters called off a strike to help with the disaster, while hospital staff, many operating on reduced salaries because of spending cuts, worked overtime to tend the injured.</p>
<p>The city's festival focuses on St James, one of Jesus' 12 disciples, whose remains are said to rest there and who is patron saint of Galicia.</p>
<p>The apostle's shrine is the destination of the famous El Camino de Santiago pilgrimage across the Pyrenees, which has been followed by Christians since the Middle Ages.</p>
<p>Wednesday's derailment was one of the worst rail accidents in Europe over the past 25 years.</p>
<p>In November 2000, 155 people were killed when a fire in a tunnel engulfed a funicular train packed with skiers in Austria.</p>
<p>In Montenegro, up to 46 people were killed and nearly 200 injured in 2006 when a packed train derailed and plunged into a ravine outside the capital, Podgorica.</p>
<p>In Spain itself, 41 people were killed the same year when an underground train derailed and overturned in a tunnel just before entering the Jesus metro station in Valencia.</p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Getty</span></p><p class="caption">British Prime Minister Theresa May.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>Boris Johnson and Sir Lynton Crosby, the man who ran Theresa May's 2017 election campaign, are reportedly plotting to oust the prime minister by destroying her Brexit vision.</strong></li><li><strong>Crosby is said to be supercharging the work of the European Research Group and Change Britain in a ruse to eventually install Johnson in 10 Downing Street.</strong></li><li><strong>Writing in The Sunday Telegraph, May said the government will not accept any compromises to her Chequers Brexit plan "that are not in our national interest." </strong></li></ul><p><br />Theresa May is facing a coup - and it's people close the British prime minister plotting to remove her from office.</p><p>That's according to <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/theresa-mays-election-boss-lynton-crosby-tries-to-scupper-her-brexit-deal-lhn3tbcnf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Sunday Times</a> and <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6122363/Theresa-rumbles-Boris-plot-oust-led-election-guru-Lynton-Crosby.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Mail on Sunday</a>, which both carried reports claiming that Boris Johnson, the former foreign secretary, and Sir Lynton Crosby are on manoeuvres.</p><p><a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/boris-johnson-resigns-as-foreign-secretary-in-brexit-blow-to-theresa-may-2018-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Johnson resigned his post in July after disagreeing with May's Brexit vision</a>, meaning he is now an influential figure on the backbenches of the governing Conservative Party. Crosby is an election campaign strategist, who oversaw May's disastrous general election operation in 2017, but worked with Johnson on two successful mayoral elections in London.</p><p>The Sunday Times said Crosby is secretly masterminding a plot to destroy <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-44749993" target="_blank" rel="noopener">May's Chequers Brexit plan</a> and is in close contact with the European Research Group (ERG), an influential group of Tory MPs campaigning for a hard Brexit.</p><p>Together, they are reportedly planning a nationwide campaign to derail May's plan and, with the support of Johnson, will present an alternative vision for leaving the European Union before the Tory party conference later this month. Crosby is also said to be attempting to revitalise pro-Brexit group Change Britain.</p><p>The work is seen as a front to eventually installing Johnson in 10 Downing Street, where he can deliver on the staunch Brexiteer vision of a clean break from the EU. But a source close to Johnson denied his involvement in the Change Britain plans, telling the Mail on Sunday: "Boris has always backed the aims of Change Britain but he has no role in the organisation."</p><p>Detractors of the Chequers vision are talking up a coup, however. "Lynton's firm is working with the ERG to run this campaign to bring down Chequers. It looks like Lynton is hitting back after falling out over the election campaign and is trying to boot out the prime minister. They want to get Boris in," a source told The Sunday Times. "If we stop Chequers, there is no way she'll survive."</p><p>The Mail on Sunday reported that May is aware of the plot. Citing senior figures at Tory headquarters, it said the prime minister has declared war on Johnson and the attempt to derail her plans. "Boris hasn't thought this through. His plan could result in us delaying leaving the EU, or even not leaving at all. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Toby Melville</span></p><p class="caption">Britain's Queen Elizabeth delivers her speech during the State Opening of Parliament at the House of Lords in 2013.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Members of the House of Lords will not try to derail Brexit by randomly blocking any parliamentary bill on the triggering of Article 50, says the Speaker of the House of Lords.</p><p><a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/01/05/exclusive-peers-will-not-sabotage-brexit-lord-speaker-tells/">According to The Daily Telegraph,</a> Lord Fowler does not want to create discord between the Lords and the Commons and will not attempt to "sabotage legislation" surrounding Brexit.</p><p>"The Lords recognise the primacy of the Commons based on the fact that they are the elected chamber and we are not," Fowler says in a piece for the newspaper.</p><p>"In return most MPs value the check that scrutiny by the Lords provides. We are not here to sabotage legislation - we are here to improve it."</p><p>There have been fears that the Lords - where the majority of members are thought to have favoured remaining in the European Union - could use its powers to simply block bills from the House of Commons, thus slowing down or even derailing Brexit. The Lord Speaker, a former Transport Minister and Conservative Party Chairman, denies that this is the case.</p><p>Suggestions first came after Conservative peer Lady Wheatcroft suggested that the Lords may make attempts to block the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> leaving the EU. "If it comes to a Bill, I think the Lords might actually delay things. I think there's a majority in the Lords for remaining," <a href="http://www.itv.com/news/2016-08-01/lords-could-delay-brexit-decision-says-tory-peer/">she said in November.</a></p><p>Under British law, any bill passed by the House of Commons must be approved in the House of Lords before formally entering into law. The system is designed to provide a check to the power of the lower house, particularly in times when the government has a strong majority (that is not currently the case).</p><p>Prime Minister Theresa May's government must now seek the approval of the House of Commons before it can trigger Article 50 and begin the formal process of leaving the EU. The House of Lords will not try to block or 'sabotage' Brexit

Kolkata, Mar 27 () The Indian Jute MillsAssociation has sought exemption from the Centre to resumetheir operations during the 21-day nationwide lockdown imposedto contain the coronavirus outbreak, saying that shortage ofjute bags could lead to a disruption of foodgrain supply, anofficial said on Friday.<p>The industry body also urged West Bengal ChiefMinister Mamata Banerjee to give permission to restartoperation in the mills.</p><p>"Food Corporation of India and state procurementagencies require jute bags urgently in view of the arrival offoodgrains for RMS (Rabi marketing season) 2020-21.</p><p>"Non-availability of packing material at the time offoodgrains arrival can derail the procurement process andcreate law and order problem in various states," the IJMA saidin a letter to Textiles Minister Smriti Irani on Thursday.</p><p>It also requested that the mills engaged in themanufacture of jute sacking bags, an important material underthe Essential Commodities Act, 1955, be exempted from thelockdown and allowed to resume production, the industry bodysaid.</p><p>Workers in jute mills are either living in quarters inthe mill premises or staying nearby, and hence the need toavail public transport does not arise, the official of theassociation said.</p>The IJMA also assured the Centre and the West Bengalgovernment that the mills will abide by the safety guidelinesand ensure adequate availability of masks and sanitisers forworkers.
