<keyword id="71274" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="dera-sacha-sauda" source="Orion">Dera Sacha Sauda</keyword> chief <keyword id="6367810" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="gurmeet-ram-rahim-singh" source="Orion">Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh</keyword>, who is serving a prison sentence in <keyword id="41646" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="haryana" source="Orion">Haryana</keyword>'s Sunaria jail, has been granted parole for 40 days, official sources said on Friday. The move comes just ahead of the Adampur by-poll, which is scheduled to be held on November 3. The <keyword id="44141" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="dera" source="Orion">Dera</keyword> chief had earlier come out of prison on month-long parole in June. Prior to that, he was granted three weeks' furlough in February. The sect chief is serving a 20-year jail term for raping two women disciples at his ashram in Sirsa, where the Dera is headquartered. He was convicted by a special <keyword id="6354572" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="cbi" source="Orion">CBI</keyword> court in Panchkula in August 2017. He was last year also convicted along with four others for hatching a conspiracy to kill Ranjit Singh, a Dera manager, in 2002. The Dera chief and three others were convicted in 2019 for the murder of a journalist more than 16 years ago. Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh granted 40-day parole

In less than five months of granting a 21-day furlough, self-styled jailed godman and <keyword id="71274" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dera-sacha-sauda" source="Orion">Dera Sacha Sauda</keyword> chief Gurmeet <keyword id="6367811" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ram-rahim" source="Orion">Ram Rahim</keyword> Singh was on Friday granted <keyword id="43553" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="parole" source="Orion">parole</keyword> for a month by the BJP-led Haryana government. He is currently serving a life term for the murder of his manager in 2002 and was also convicted for the rape of two women in 2017. He's lodged in Haryana's Sunaria jail since 2017 after being convicted in the rape and murder cases. He has a large number of followers in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Earlier, he was released from the jail four times for various reasons, including his plea to meet the ailing mother. The parole has been granted for the first time since his conviction. Justifying the decision, an official said Ram Rahim has been granted parole as per the jail manual. He will stay in Barnawa in Bagpath, the first ashram established in Uttar Pradesh in 1980, during parole. According to an official, the dera chief was provided Z-plus security cover during his parole owing to the "high threat perception" to his life from "pro-Khalistan" groups. Earlier just ahead of the Punjab polls, Ram Rahim, who is lodged at the high-security Sunaria jail in Rohtak, 250 kms from state capital Chandigarh, was granted furlough on February 7 to meet his family in Gurugram. In June 2019, Ram Rahim Singh had withdrawn his parole plea after the state BJP government was cornered by opposition parties for favouring the self-styled godman, who sought parole for 42 days to tend to his agricultural fields at his sect's headquarters in Sirsa town. Also, the high court had rejected his parole plea for attending the wedding ceremony of his foster daughter. Ram Rahim was sentenced to 20 years in jail in August 2017 for raping two women. A special CBI court in Panchkula this January 2019 also sentenced Ram Rahim and three others to life imprisonment for the murder of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati over 16 years ago. His conviction on August 25, 2017, had led to violence in Panchkula and Sirsa, leaving 41 people dead and over 260 injured. Ram Rahim was patronised by political leaders and parties in Punjab and Haryana for nearly two decades due to his ability to influence the votes of his followers. Dera Sacha Sauda chief Ram Rahim Singh gets one month parole

The rupee strengthened by 6 paise to 78.04 against the US dollar in opening trade on Friday as easing <keyword id="45185" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crude-oil" source="Orion">crude oil</keyword> prices supported the local unit. However, unabated foreign fund outflows, a lacklustre trend in domestic equities and strong American dollar overseas restricted the gain, forex dealers said. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened strong at 78.03 against the US dollar, then inched lower to quote 78.04, registering a rise of 6 paise over the last close. In the previous session, the rupee had closed at 78.10 against the US dollar. On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share Sensex was trading 251.06 points or 0.49 percent lower at 51,244.73, while the broader NSE Nifty fell 90.15 points or 0.59 per cent to 15,270.45. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.60 per cent to 104.25. Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures slipped 0.78 per cent to USD 118.88 per barrel. Foreign institutional investors were net sellers in the capital market on Thursday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 3,257.65 crore, as per exchange data. Meanwhile, an RBI article has said India is better placed than many other countries to avoid the risks of potential stagflation with recovery broadly on track, notwithstanding an increasingly hostile external environment. The government does not see any adverse impact on the Indian economy post the US Federal Reserve's decision to raise interest rates by 75 basis points, Economic Affairs Secretary Ajay Seth said on Thursday. "All central banks are grappling with it and taking adequate measures which are needed to control inflation. I see a fair amount of coordination ...directly or indirectly they are moving in tandem," Seth told reporters. "So, I don't see any adverse impact of that (rate hike by Fed) because the Reserve Bank of India, in the two previous cycles, has already taken adequate measures," he said. On Wednesday, the US Federal Open Market Committee, on expected lines, raised the target range for federal funds rate by 75 basis points to 1.50-1.75 per cent. It also said it would hike rates aggressively for the rest of the calendar year. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) turned net purchaser of the US currency in April, after it bought USD 1.965 billion from the spot market, according to RBI's monthly bulletin for June.
