A 60-year-old woman, who was declared brain dead after suffering an intracranial hemorrhage, gave new lease of life to at least four persons after her family members agreed to organ donation at Gurugram's <keyword id="167599" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="paras-hospital" source="Orion">Paras Hospital</keyword>, an official said on Tuesday. The woman was admitted to the hospital on July 7 and the doctors declared her brain dead on July 10. The same day her family members gave nod for organ donation, hoping she would still live through her organs. Once the family officially consented to donate her organs - both her kidneys and eyes were allotted by the <keyword id="2831643" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="national-organ-and-tissue-transplant-organisation" source="Orion">National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation</keyword> (NOTTO). One of her kidneys was given to a 42-year-old male patient at the same hospital, while the other one was donated to a 17-year-old female patient at <keyword id="1981226" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="asian-hospital" source="Orion">Asian Hospital</keyword> in Faridabad. The eyes were donated to two persons at private hospitals in <keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword>. P.N. Despite the best efforts of the neurosurgical team, she was declared brain dead. "Very few families realise the importance of organ donation. With her organs, four persons got new lease of life. Thousands of people die due to non-availability of organs, irrespective of age, gender, cast or religion. Anybody can be an organ donor." Brain-dead woman's organs save four lives

By Yoshita Singh New York, May 8 () An Indian-American father and daughter, both doctors in New Jersey, have died due to the COVID-19, with Governor Phil Murphy describing their demise as "particularly tough" and hailed them for dedicating their lives for others.Satyender Dev Khanna, 78, was a surgeon who served both on staff and as the head of the surgical departments for multiple hospitals across New Jersey for decades.Priya Khanna, 43, was a double board certified in both internal medicine and nephrology. She was Chief of Residents at Union Hospital, now part of RWJ Barnabas Health."Dr. Satyender Dev Khanna and Dr. Priya Khanna were father and daughter. They both dedicated their lives to helping others. This is a family dedicated to health and medicine. Our words cannot amply express our condolences," New Jersey Governor Murphy tweeted on Thursday. "Both dedicated their lives to helping others and we lost both of them to COVID-19," Murphy said during a press conference on Thursday, saying their demise is a "particularly tough one."Satyender passed away at the Clara Maass Medical Center where he had worked for more than 35 years.Murphy described him as a "pioneering doctor" who was one of the first surgeons to perform laparoscopic surgery in the state. He is being remembered by colleagues as a "gentle and caring physician.""And for a doctor, I'm not one, but I would bet, I don't think there could be a more fitting way to be remembered, or a nurse or a healthcare worker of any kind," Murphy said, adding that the doctor had a passion for bicycling, and he often found peace from the hustle of the hospital in biking along the Jersey Shore.Priya did all of her medical training in New Jersey and then did her fellowship in nephrology in South Jersey with the Cooper Health System.Like her father, she too worked at Clara Maass, where she died.She was also Medical Director at two dialysis centers in Essex County and "took pride" in teaching the next generation of doctors, Murphy said, adding that the ICU physician who cared for Priya Khanna was trained and taught by her as well."Priya will be remembered as a caring and selfless person who put others first. And even while in the hospital, fighting her own battle, she continued to check up on her mom and dad and her family," Murphy said."This is a family, by the way, dedicated to health and medicine," he said.The governor spoke with Satyender's wife Komlish Khanna, who is a pediatrician. The couple has two more daughters - Sugandha Khanna, an emergency medicine physician and Anisha Khanna, a pediatrician."Unbelievable. Currently, just 12% of patients get dialysis at home in the US. </li><li>President Donald Trump issued an <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/president-donald-j-trump-taking-bold-new-approach-advance-kidney-health/">executive order</a> on kidney care earlier this month. The administration aims to have 80% of patients with kidney failure either getting home-based care or receiving transplants by 2025.</li><li>Right now, for-profit companies Fresenius Medical Care and DaVita control a large portion of the kidney-care market. They largely operate centers where people go three times a week to get dialysis.</li><li>A slew of companies are seeking to disrupt the market by offering cheaper and more convenient care at home. Because such a significant part of the population is affected, and because treatment can be so expensive, the government covers the medical expenses of people with end-stage kidney disease <a href="https://www.medicare.gov/information-for-my-situation/signing-up-for-medicare-if-you-have-esrd">through the Medicare program</a>. In 2016, Medicare spent about <a href="https://www.usrds.org/2018/view/v1_07.aspx">$114 billion</a> caring for people with chronic and end-stage kidney disease. Earlier this month, Trump released an executive order to transform kidney care in the US, reducing costs and improving outcomes for patients by encouraging more home-based kidney care. They must go three times a week for hours at a time. By 2025, <a href="https://www.hhs.gov/about/news/2019/07/10/hhs-launches-president-trump-advancing-american-kidney-health-initiative.html">The Trump administration wants 80%</a> of patients who are newly diagnosed with kidney failure to be able to get care at home or get a kidney transplant.Home-based dialysis treatment can be better for patients, as patients can perform their own dialysis more frequently, leading to improved health and potentially lower costs."Home dialysis has a lot of advantages in terms of quality of life, convenience, and control of one's schedule," said <a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/staff/18239-leslie-wong">Dr. Leslie Wong</a>, the vice chairman of the Department of Nephrology and Hypertension at Cleveland Clinic. "I've been in the field for 15 years and physicians have been supportive of home dialysis since I began practicing." For-profit companies DaVita, Fresenius, US Renal Care, and American Renal Associates operate centers where people can get dialysis. Currently, Fresenius and DaVita control about 75% of the market, according to an analysis from S&amp;P Global. US Renal Care has about 5% and and American Renal Associates has 3%, S&amp;P said.Startups like Somatus, Outset Medical, and Cricket Health, which offer different types of kidney care, including home-based dialysis, are trying to break in. Most home dialysis is peritoneal, which is easier to do. Medicare spent $28 billion on hemodialysis and about $2 billion on peritoneal dialysis in 2016, according to the <a href="https://www.usrds.org/2018/view/v2_09.aspx">US Renal Data System</a>. Peritoneal dialysis is cheaper on a per-person basis.
