New generation ballistic missile 'Agni Prime' was successfully flight-tested by the <keyword id="152819" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="defence-research-and-development-organisation" source="Orion">Defence Research and Development Organisation</keyword> (<keyword id="6355142" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="drdo" source="Orion">DRDO</keyword>). The Ballistic missile 'Agni Prime' was tested from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha. During the flight test, all objectives were successfully demonstrated, a defence ministry official said on Thursday. According to the Ministry, this was the first pre-induction night launch conducted by the users after three successful developmental trials of the missile, validating the accuracy and reliability of the system. The test was conducted in the night hours of June 7. Range Instrumentation like Radar, Telemetry and Electro-Optical Tracking Systems were deployed at different locations, including two down-range ships, at the terminal point to capture flight data covering the entire trajectory of the vehicle, the ministry added. Senior officials from DRDO and Strategic Forces Command witnessed the successful flight-test, which paved the way for induction of the system into the <keyword id="3790" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="armed-forces" source="Orion">Armed Forces</keyword>. India successfully fight tests 'Agni Prime' ballistic missile with a range of 2,000 kms

Defence Materials and Stores Research and Development Establishment (DMSRDE), Kanpur has successfully developed the lightest Bullet Proof Jacket in the country for protection against 7.62 x 54 R API (Level 6 of BIS 17051) ammunition. According to the <keyword id="19905108" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Defence" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Ministry of Defence" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Ministry of Defence">Ministry of Defence</keyword>, recently, this bulletproof jacket was successfully tested at Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL), Chandigarh as per BIS 17051-2018. This jacket is based upon a <keyword id="21410391" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-design-approach" source="keywords">new design approach</keyword>, where novel material along with new processes have been used. The front Hard Armour Panel (HAP) of this jacket defeats multiple hits (06 shots) of 7.62 x 54 R API (Sniper rounds) in both ICW (In-conjunction with) and Standalone design. The ergonomically designed front HAP is made up of monolithic ceramic plate with polymer backing which enhances the wearability and comfort during the operation. The areal density of ICW Hard Armour Panel (HAP) and standalone HAP is less than 40 kg/m2 and 43 kg/m2 respectively. Essentially, the theme affirms the value of all life-human, animal, plant, and microorganism-and their interconnectedness on the planet Earth and in the wider universe.

The June 2020 report on <keyword id="839213" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chinese-Aggression">Chinese aggression</keyword> The monthly report of June addressed the Galwan Valley clash between Indian and Chinese forces, which resulted in the death of 15 Indian soldiers and an undisclosed number of casualties on the Chinese side. It also highlighted that Kugrang Nala, Gogra, and the north bank of Pangong Tso lake were friction points created by Chinese transgressions on May 17 and 18. In the fresh takedown, the reports from April and May have also gone missing. They did not directly point at China but did refer to the crisis along the LAC. Overall, since August 2019, China has been mentioned in India’s monthly reports four times. Once in August 2019 after a meeting of the India-China Joint Working Group and then again in December 2019 after the Indian Army and China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) conducted a joint exercise in Meghalaya. Early this year, in February, China’s name came up again after its warship — Jiangwei-II — was spotted in Pakistani waters a little too close to Porbandar for India’s comfort. India’s Defence Ministry removes three-years worth of monthly reports from website

By Lalit K Jha Washington, The US has approved India's request to purchase USD 90 million worth of <keyword id="214289" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="military-hardware">military hardware</keyword> and services in support of its fleet of C-130J Super Hercules aircraft. This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of <keyword id="171985" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-United-States">the United States</keyword> by helping to strengthen the US-Indian strategic relationship and improve the security of a "Major Defence Partner", said Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) of <keyword id="10300097" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-department-of-defence">the Department of Defence</keyword>. In a major sales notification to Congress, DSCA said that India continues to be an important force for political stability, peace and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia region. Among the requests made by India include <keyword id="10378415" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="aircraft-consumables-spares">aircraft consumables spares</keyword> and repair/return parts; Cartridge Actuated Devices/Propellant Actuated Devices (CAD/PAD) fire extinguisher cartridges; flare cartridges; Advanced Radar Warning Receiver shipset; 10 Lightweight Night Vision Binocular; 10 AN/AVS-9 Night Vision Goggle; GPS; Electronic Warfare; instruments and lab equipment support. The estimated total amount is USD 90 million. The Pentagon said that the proposed sale ensures the previously procured aircraft operates effectively to serve the needs of the Indian Air Force (IAF), the Army and the Navy transport requirements, local and international humanitarian assistance, and regional disaster relief. This sale of spares and services will enable the IAF to sustain a mission-ready status with respect to the C-130J transport. India will have no difficulty absorbing this additional sustainment support, it said. According to the Pentagon, the proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region. The prime contractor will be Lockheed-Martin Company, Marietta, Georgia. In a major move in 2016, the US had designated India a "Major Defence Partner" intending to elevate defence trade and technology sharing to a level commensurate with that of its closest allies and partners. India gets green signal to buy military equipment worth $90 million from the US

India got its first ever export order for <keyword id="961030" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BrahMos-missiles" source="Orion">BrahMos missiles</keyword> on Friday when the <keyword id="3750" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="philippines" source="Orion">Philippines</keyword>' <keyword id="43909" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="defence-ministry" source="Orion">Defence Ministry</keyword> signed USD 374 million contract with the <keyword id="2635490" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="brahmos-aerospace-pvt-ltd" source="Orion">BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd</keyword> (BAPL) to supply undisclosed number of missiles, military officials stated. The BAPL, an India-Russian joint venture, produces the supersonic cruise missile BrahMos that can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft, or from land platforms. The USD 374 million contract is to supply shore-based anti-ship BrahMos missiles to the Philippines' Navy, the military officials noted. In a statement, the Defence Ministry said: "The BAPL signed a contract with the Department of National Defence of the Republic of Philippines on January 28, 2022, for supply of shore-based anti-ship missile system to Philippines." "The BAPL is a joint venture company of the Defence Research and Development Organisation. The contract is an important step forward for Government of India's policy of promoting responsible defence exports," it added. India has already deployed a sizable number of the Brahmos missiles and other key assets in several strategic locations along the Line of Actual Control with China in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh.  For the <keyword id="8192304" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="union-budget-2020">Union Budget 2020</keyword>, ISRO is asking the government for an additional ₹75 crore to fund Chandrayaan 3, according to a <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/chandrayaan-3-is-official-isro-seeks-rs-75-crore/articleshow/72421303.cms">TOI report</a>. Most of the 11% jump in ISRO’s proposed budget or ₹666 crore will go towards meeting machinery, equipment and other capital expenditure.  Bringing in the money Right now, the only way that the space agency earns revenue is through its commercial arm — <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/union-budget-2019-isros-new-commerical-arm-is-new-space-india-limited/articleshow/70086097.cms">New Space India Limited (NSIL)</a>, formerly known as the Antrix Corporation. NSIL helps foreign governments get their satellites into space, manufactures rockets, produces space technology and helps aid the transfer of technology by ISRO centres. Over the past five years, ISRO has launched satellites from 26 different countries and has generated ₹1,245.17 crore in revenue. In 2020, the space agency has around 10 satellite mission scheduled to launch before March. The most notable of which will be the test flight of ISRO’s new <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/isros-new-company-just-made-its-first-sale-to-an-american-firm-to-come-aboard-a-rocket-that-doesnt-exist-yet/articleshow/70588829.cms">Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV)</a>. The smaller rocket can carry smaller payloads into Earth’s orbit and only needs three days to prepare for the launch. Other rockets require months of planning. Anticipating greater demand for satellite launches, ISRO is also building a new spaceport specifically for the SSLV rocket in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. Advocates also argue that ISRO’s mission helps push the Make in India initiative. Last year, the space agency invited private players to build 5 of its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicles (PSLVs). India is also currently processing the ‘<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-space-activities-bill-addresses-damage-in-outer-space/articleshow/69960212.cms">Space Activities Bill</a>’, which will fix the liability for damage with international standards. It will also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/isros-commercial-operations-clock-in-over-60-billion-in-revenue-but-leaves-private-players-out-of-the-equation/articleshow/70375311.cms">allow private players to launch satellites </a>— currently a burgeoning market globally with international private entities like Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin leading the charge. And, ISRO will be able to make some money handing out licenses. Exploring space is expensive — and ISRO needs more money from the 2020 Union Budget

<ul><li>India is looking to introduce another list that will restrict the import of defence items. </li><li>The second list will be aimed at creating more opportunities for Indian defence firms on both, the software and hardware, side of things. </li><li>The Defence Ministry is hoping to turnover $25 billion in defence manufacturing within the next five years — including $5 billion worth of military hardware exports. </li></ul>India’s Defence Ministry is currently working on a second import list that will restrict the import of arms and weapons into the country. <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/second-negative-arms-import-list-likely-by-year-end/articleshow/77764060.cms">ANI</a> reports that the list is currently being discussed between the three legs of the armed forces and the Department of Military Affairs. The new list is likely to come out by the end of the year as India marches towards its goal of exporting $5 billion worth of military hardware in the next five years. The first list, which was released on August 9, has already put an ‘import embargo’ on 101 military items, which includes artillery guns, submarines, aircrafts and other smaller, but crucial, inputs. It also earmarks ₹52,000 core out of the total capital budget allocation for domestic capital procurement. Similarly, the second list will also aim to create more opportunities for Indian defence firms on both the software and hardware side of things, according to ANI. And, while Indian companies will have more contracts come their way, the list <a href="https://www.thedispatch.in/impact-of-embargo-on-defence-imports/">should not impact</a> any ongoing joint ventures of even the Strategic Partnership Model. India’s ask is that they tie-up with local firms to produce within the country, looking at its market size. “It is a win-win situation for everyone including the public sector, private sector and foreign companies. The government is committed to providing a better eco-system for this,” Modi said during a seminar on self-reliance in defence on August 27 organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). Many questions remain India is currently the third-biggest military spender in the world, behind only the US and China, as of 2019, according to data by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). Over 60% of India’s military requirements are currently met through imports. On Monday, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) made a detailed presentation to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, identifying 108 military sub-systems and components that Indian private companies that build in-house, according to <a href="https://www.theweek.in/news/india/2020/08/26/govt-sets-up-expert-panel-to-redefine-drdo-for-futuristic-battles.html">THE WEEK</a>. To make that happen, the DRDO will provide support over the next couple of years. However many questions remain since the total allocation to the armed forces, this year was already ₹59,416 crore less than what was asked for. For instance, will the bifurcation between domestic and foreign capital procurement routes of the budget be a permanent feature. And if so, how will the utilisation — and in some cases, the non-utilisation — of funds be dictated. For now, what is clear, is that the Defence Ministry has set a goal to hit a turnover of $25 billion (₹1.75 lakh crore) in defence manufacturing within the next five years. Within its fold is an export target of $5 billion (₹35,000 crore) worth of military hardware. India likely to introduce a second defence ‘import embargo’ list by the end of year as it chases down $5 billion in exports

India is preparing country-wise profiles of defence products and platforms to promote their exports and the government will stand "side by side" with the domestic industry in this endeavour through diplomatic channels, a senior Defence Ministry official said Monday. Raj Kumar, secretary, Department of Defence Production, said at a webinar that the domestic defence industry will hold web interactions with the representatives of friendly countries to figure out what kind of products and platforms they require. "We are preparing country-wise profiles of products, weapons and platforms which are probably needed by our friendly countries. So we are now planning to start web interaction led by the industry," Kumar said. "That country's defence attache, our DPSUs (defence public sector undertakings), industry, will then figure out what is in the store for us to promote there for exports," he said. Kumar said the government will be standing side by side with the domestic industry through its defence attaches, embassies and diplomatic channels to promote exports. To promote indigenous production, the Defence Ministry on August 9 announced restrictions on import of 101 weapons and military platforms including light combat helicopters, conventional submarines and cruise missiles under a staggered timeline till 2024. Kumar said a second list of import-restricted defence items will be notified soon. "This is the first list we are examining and then a second list will also come. We expect you (industry) to come forward and start investing to meet our requirements," he said at the webinar -- "Army Make Projects 2020" -- organised by FICCI. The senior official said as successful domestic bidders move to the defence equipment production stage, his department will share their details with the UP and Tamil Nadu defence corridor authorities, who "will compete in attracting your units to their respective states". He said since the three services are making efforts to push the "Make II" category of defence production projects, he will interact with project participants to understand their concerns and share best practices among the services. As secretary of the Department of Defence Production, Kumar heads the collegiate committee that approves the "Make II" category of projects. Under the Make II category, no government funding is given to the Indian company for the prototype development process. If a prototype developed by the company meets the standards set by the armed forces, an order is placed for such equipment or platforms. "Everything, whether it is defence industrial corridor, or whether it is defence production and export promotion policy, or whether it is a negative list - everything works in the same direction that we have to be among the top producers of defence items," he said. On August 9, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the ministry was now ready for a "big push" to indigenous defence manufacturing in tune with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for an "Atmanirbhar Bharat" (Self-Reliant India). India is one of the most lucrative markets for global defence giants. The country has figured among the top three global importers of military hardware for the last eight years. The Indian armed forces are projected to spend around USD 130 billion in capital procurement in the next five years.
