The Adam footage then cuts to an aerial clip of smoke streaming from a forest, seeming to show the aftermath of the strike.</p><p>The Adam Tactical Group is run by Colonel Yevhen "Adam" Mezhevikin, who was awarded the title Hero of Ukraine earlier this year for his efforts in the highly-contested city of Bakhmut, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/articles/2023/06/28/7408831/">according to the outlet Ukrainian Pravda.</a></p><div type="image" title="Drone footage" height="1562" width="2236" msid="103935529" hostid="261" sizebytes="50112"></div><p>Drones have been a key part of Ukrainian military strategy during its counteroffensive this summer.</p><p>In the last few weeks, they helped destroy a $500 million <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-destroyed-russian-air-defense-system-with-cruise-missiles-report-2023-9?r=US&amp;IR=T"><u>Russian air defense system,</u></a> sank large <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/video-shows-moment-ukraine-drone-strike-destroys-russian-vessel-war-2023-9"><u>Russian naval vessels,</u></a> and <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-russia-war-drone-strikes-shut-down-moscow-airports-again-2023-8"><u>shut down Moscow-area airports</u></a>.</p><p>Russia is retaliating by attempting to take down the Ukrainian drones via electronic jamming and stockpiling cheap drones of its own — mainly from China, <a target="_blank" rel=" nofollow" href="https://www.wsj.com/world/europe/russias-army-learns-from-its-mistakes-in-ukraine-a6b2eb4"><u>The Wall Street Journal reported</u></a>.</p><p>Russia's Ministry of Defense did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.</p>

Wild video shows Ukrainian drone flying through dense forest into a Russian hideout before exploding, military says       

<ul class="summary-list"><li>New York City got its first tiny forest, planted on Roosevelt Island on April 6. </li><li>The planting method, developed by a Japanese botanist, uses minimal land to maximum effect.</li></ul><p>On a chilly Saturday morning in early April, a few hundred people gathered in a park on Roosevelt Island, a skinny strip of land in New York City's East River, to dig around in the dirt.</p><p>The occasion was the creation of New York City's first tiny forest, a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sugiproject.com/blog/the-miyawaki-method-for-creating-forests">planting method</a> developed by the prominent Japanese botanist and ecologist Akira Miyawaki that's designed to accelerate dense growth to promote biodiversity. Volunteers had signed up to help plant 1,500 native trees and shrubs on a 4,000-square-foot plot on the southern end of the island.</p><p>"The idea is very simple, it's to bring back what was once there," said Elise Van Middelem, the founder and CEO of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sugiproject.com/">SUGi</a>, an international foundation behind the effort.</p><p>The small, dense plot of greenery is just the newest feature on an island that's undergone many transformations.</p><div type="image" title="Volunteers and supporters gather in Southpoint Park on Roosevelt Island for a ceremony before planting a pocket forest on April 6, 2024." height="850" width="1280" msid="109287738" hostid="261" sizebytes="156598"></div><p>Before a Dutch colonist bought the strip of land in 1637, it was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nypap.org/layers-five-decades-deephistoric-preservation-on-roosevelt-island/">home to the Lenape people</a>, who called the land Minnehanonck. In the late 1660s, the land was acquired by a British captain whose descendants eventually used it for farming and renamed it Blackwell's Island. When the city <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nps.gov/places/blackwell-s-island-new-york-city.htm">took it over in 1828</a>, it built a penitentiary, the New York City Lunatic Asylum, and a smallpox hospital on what became known as Welfare Island.</p><p>Curtis Zunigh of the nonprofit Lenape Center told attendees at the planting that the mini-forest is an opportunity "to reverse the process of many generations that have threatened the existence and the wellness of this land and our collective spirit."</p><p>US Rep. Jerry Nadler, who represents the island, said the forest is a way to combat the climate crisis. "Let's not stop here. Let's make the Manhattan Healing Forest a model for expanding green spaces across our city."</p><p>The island was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/1976/05/02/archives/roosevelt-island-becoming-a-reality-town-becoming-reality-on.html">fully transformed in the 1970s</a>, after the city moved the last of its prisoners to Rikers Island, renamed it after President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and leased most of the land to New York State. Forty-six years later, she's still a resident — and the island's <a target="_blank" href="https://rihs.us/order-our-book/">chief historian</a>. Despite its newer luxury homes, Berdy says the island has retained much of the community feel it had decades ago. "It's a real small town, you walk around and most people know each other," she said.</p><p>Other Roosevelt Island "pioneers" included current resident Christina Delfico's grandmother, aunts, uncles and cousins. Delfico moved to the island herself more than a decade ago and founded a nonprofit called <a target="_blank" href="https://www.idig2learn.org/">iDig2Learn</a> that helps reconnect people with nature. She spurred the creation of the pocket forest when she reached out to Van Middelem last summer after reading about SUGi's work. Van Middelem jumped at the opportunity. Its urban design, Panova said, could do more to bring people together. "It has the bones of a great main street with a lovely main square," she said, but there's little to attract residents and visitors there.</p><p>The waterfront, she noted, has outstanding views, but "there's almost nothing to do there - no cafés, squares, shade structures, plentiful seating, or other kinds of amenities and assets that we know make the best waterfronts around the world great places that people flock to."</p><p>Ideally, the tiny forest can offer a new attraction.</p><p>Olivia MacDonald, a 24-year-old copywriter who lives on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, read about the event in the New York Times and immediately signed up to volunteer.</p><p>"It seems very modern and almost utopian to think about doing something like this," she said. "I just wanted to be a part of it."</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Cave explorers found a giant <keyword id="13976593" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sinkhole" source="Orion">sinkhole</keyword> in <keyword id="11892748" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="china" source="Orion">China</keyword>'s Guangxi region, according to <a href="https://english.news.cn/20220507/722aa19654e9469db044f1c231fb260e/c.html">Xinhua News Agency</a>.</li><li>Hidden inside the 630-feet-deep sinkhole is an ancient forest.</li></ul><p>Cave explorers found a massive ancient forest hidden inside a giant sinkhole in China's Guangxi region, <a href="https://english.news.cn/20220507/722aa19654e9469db044f1c231fb260e/c.html">Xinhua News</a> reported.</p><p>The sinkhole measured over a thousand feet in length and was nearly 630 feet deep, Zhang Yuanhai, a senior engineer with the Institute of Karst Geology at the Chinese Academy of Geologi­cal Sciences, told the outlet earlier this month. </p><p>The explorers rappelled down more than 328-feet into the sinkhole before trekking for several hours to reach the bottom. On the sinkhole floor, they found a primeval forest with ancient trees 130 feet tall, expedition team leader Chen Lixin told Xinhua. He added that the plants grew densely together and came up to his shoulders.</p><div type="image" title="Palm trees in a Tiankeng, or giant karst sinkhole, in China." height="3443" width="4591" msid="91663639" hostid="261"></div><p>A Twitter video dated May 7 showed expedition team members climbing through the dense foliage and operating a drone to document the sinkhole.</p><p>Such sinkholes might be home to undiscovered species of flora and fauna, researchers told <a href="https://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/cave-explorers-discover-giant-sinkhole-forest-in-china/1188921">AccuWeather</a>.</p><p>"I wouldn't be surprised to know that there are species found in these caves that have never been reported or described by <keyword id="11896083" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="science" source="Orion">science</keyword> until now," George Veni, the executive director of the National Cave and Karst Research Institute in New Mexico, told the outlet on Wednesday. </p><div type="image" title="A Tiankeng, or giant karst sinkhole, at Leye-Fengshan Global Geopark, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region." height="3388" width="4517" msid="91663640" hostid="261"></div><p>Known as tiankeng in Mandarin, or "heavenly pit," sinkholes are common in South China because of the <keyword id="11918130" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nature" source="Orion">nature</keyword> of the landscape. The landscape, called karst, is formed when rainwater dissolves bedrock, Veni told <a href="https://www.livescience.com/new-sinkhole-discovered-china">Live Science</a>.</p><p>"Because of local differences in geology, climate, and other factors, the way karst appears at the surface can be dramatically different," he told the outlet. "So in China, you have this incredibly visually spectacular karst with enormous sinkholes and giant cave entrances and so forth. In other parts of the world, you walk out on the karst, and you really don't notice anything. Sinkholes might be quite subdued, only a meter or two in diameter. Cave entrances might be very small, so you have to squeeze your way into them." </p><p>The region was added to the <a href="https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1248/">UNESCO World Heritage</a> list in 2007 because of its unique topography, which includes rock formations and extensive cave systems.  </p><p>China is also home to the <a href="http://www.china.org.cn/travel/2015-10/15/content_36815159.htm">world's largest sinkhole</a> — the Xiaozhai Tiankeng — measuring over 2,000 feet in depth. It can be found in <a href="http://www.china.org.cn/travel/2015-10/15/content_36815159.htm">Tiankeng Difeng National Park</a> in Chongqing City.</p>

Chinese cave explorers discovered a 630-foot-deep sinkhole containing a massive ancient forest

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Super Scoopers are the only planes in the world specifically designed to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/west-coast-wildfires-aerial-firefighting-fire-bombers-washington-state-oregon-2020-9">fight wildfires</a>.</li><li>At $30 million, the CL-415EAF is one of the most expensive <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-aerial-firefighters-train-to-fight-forest-fires-from-sky-2021-2">aerial firefighting</a> aircraft ever made.</li><li>Insider went inside this Super Scooper to see how it works and what it takes to fly it.</li></ul><p><em>Following is a transcript of the <keyword id="21654" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="video">video</keyword>.</em></p><p>[plane engine whirring]</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> These pilots are flying what's called a Super Scooper. At around $30 million, it's one of the most expensive aerial-firefighting aircraft ever made.</p><p><strong>Tim Sheehy:</strong> It's literally a boat with giant wings, and it's built like a tank. It looks like no other plane in the world.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> The CL-415 Enhanced Aerial Firefighter can scoop and drop 1,400 gallons of water on wildfires in a matter of minutes. Compare that to this 1970s plane, which could only drop 200 gallons of water at a time.</p><p><strong>Sheehy:</strong> $30 million is very expensive for any aircraft. However, it's actually the most cost-effective aerial-firefighting asset.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Super Scoopers revolutionized aerial firefighting, and Insider got an up-close look with Bridger Aerospace to see how this aircraft is tailor-made to fight fires. Airplanes have been used to fight wildfires for almost 100 years, but early attempts weren't nearly as effective.</p><p><strong>Sheehy:</strong> In the '50s and '60s, almost all the aircraft used to fight fires were retired or salvaged World War II aircraft. Tanks were strapped to the middle, and they were used in a very haphazard, provisional manner.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Some of these makeshift firefighting planes were only able to drop 150 to 200 gallons of water at a time.</p><p><strong>Sheehy:</strong> Not really effective in today's world, but at the time, it was the best they could do.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Canadair was contracted to design a plane specifically to fight fires.</p><p><strong>Sheehy:</strong> So they designed the grandfather of this <keyword id="6420597" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Airplane">airplane</keyword>, the CL-215. It looked very similar.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Which Viking Air Ltd. modernized in 2020, retrofitting the CL-215 with a new avionics system, turbine engines, and more.</p><p><strong>Sheehy:</strong> It was taken down to its bones and created, essentially, a new airplane.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Weighing in at 30,000 pounds, the CL-415EAF is 30 feet tall and has a 93-foot wingspan, just 24 feet shy of a Boeing 737's wingspan.</p><p><strong>Sheehy:</strong> When up close to it, you really appreciate just the massive size of it.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> But despite its size, the aircraft was engineered to fly like a much smaller plane.</p><p><strong>Sheehy:</strong> When you look at them, they don't necessarily look like they'd be an aerobatic or stunt plane. We're taking a plane almost the size of a C-130, we're flying it into extremely narrow canyons, very low altitude, banking high-g turns at a high rate of turn. Flying an aircraft this big, that low, in that dangerous of an environment is very rare.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> The Scooper is so nimble because of its flight-control surfaces, or aerodynamic devices that pilots use to adjust and control the aircraft. On any plane, the main control surfaces are the ailerons, which control the plane's roll; the rudder, which controls yaw, or the aircraft's direction; and elevators, which control the aircraft's pitch. And in the case of the Super Scooper, those flight-control surfaces are supersized.</p><p><strong>Sheehy:</strong> That's important, because when you're flying slow and big, you need to have a lot of aileron area, a lot of elevator area to be able to move that aircraft as quickly as you need to at those low speeds.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> That's why this rudder is 25 square feet larger than that of a Boeing 737-900, even though the Super Scooper is 10 feet shorter and half as long. This is crucial for the Scooper. It needs to slow down to 90 knots, or just over 100 miles per hour, to perform a scoop. That's almost half the aircraft's standard cruising speed.</p><p><strong>Sheehy:</strong> Once you've identified your scoop site and you're coming in, you go through your pre-pickup checklist. One of those items is "probe down."</p><p><strong><keyword id="6356223" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pilot">Pilot</keyword>:</strong> Probes are down.</p><p><strong>Sheehy:</strong> The way the aircraft picks up water, as it does not stop or suck it up, there's no vacuum, it scoops it. And it scoops it through what you see here, two probes on either side of the keel of the aircraft, about the size of your hands put together, and as soon as you hit the water, they catch. You can feel it in the cockpit. You've got to be ready for that catch with the yoke.</p><p><strong>Pilot:</strong> Right there, get ready to add some power. Now.</p><p><strong>Sheehy:</strong> And the water begins filling almost immediately.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> It takes the Scooper 12 seconds to fill its tanks with 1,400 gallons of water, during which time the pilot has to maintain the plane's speed and direction.</p><p><strong>Sheehy:</strong> Once the aircraft is full and the tanks are full, you retract the probes. There is a noticeable surge in the aircraft when those probes go up. Get the aircraft back up to speed and take off.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Now 11,000 pounds heavier, the aircraft relies on its design to ascend from the surface.</p><p><strong>Barrett Farrell:</strong> If you look at the wing, you can see it has a very large curvature to it. That's called camber, which creates an enormous amount of lift.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> But aerodynamics aren't the only factor involved. The plane is outfitted with turboprop engines that generate more than enough power to lift it off the surface.</p><p><strong>Turner:</strong> They make 2,380 shaft horsepower, each side.</p><p><strong>Sheehy:</strong> These things are extremely durable. You never want to hit anything with them, of course, but if it's ash or debris being pushed up through the thermals of the fire, these engines are going to chew right through that and keep running.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> All that enables the Scooper to ascend back up to its previous altitude in roughly three minutes.</p><p><strong>Pilot:</strong> Scooper 282 is inbound, loaded for the drop.</p><p><strong>Farrell:</strong> So, when we're lining up for a drop, the air attack will get us on target. They're in contact with the folks on the ground, who are requesting the water. We're factoring in the terrain, the wind, our altitude for when we need to press the button to make the drop.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> When the pilot is ready to drop the load, they'll press the water-drop button...</p><p><strong>Pilot:</strong> And three, two, one, drop.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Opening the drop doors on the keel and releasing 1,400 gallons of water.</p><p><strong>Pilot:</strong> Load's away.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> It only takes two seconds for the aircraft to drop its entire load, a very short window for the pilot to work with.</p><p><strong>Farrell:</strong> There is no targeting computer. It's all by feel and by experience.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> But the Super Scooper's high-lift wing and turboprop engines allow it to attack forest fires from a lower altitude and speed than other firefighting aircraft. While planes like the 747 Supertanker and DC-10 make drops from between 200 and 800 feet, the Super Scooper can do so from as low as 100 feet above a fire.</p><p><strong>Sheehy:</strong> When you're fighting fire at low altitude, flying through mountains and smoke and trees, having the ability to quickly adjust to terrain variations, other aircraft in the area, or obstacles that emerge through the smoke is very important.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> After performing the drop, the Scooper can simply head back to the water source to pick up another load, rather than refilling on the ground.</p><p><strong>Farrell:</strong> So, from drop to drop, it really depends on how close our water source is, but I've been on fires where we're dropping a load of water every six minutes.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> The aircraft can go up to six hours between refuels, depending on conditions, meaning it can fight fires longer than other aircraft that need to refuel every two hours.</p><p><strong>Sheehy:</strong> Although the sticker price on the aircraft is very expensive, it can deliver 150,000 gallons in one service day, compared to a more traditional tanker that can oftentimes only do a small fraction of that. It's actually the most cost-effective aerial-firefighting asset.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> And with a paint job like that, it can be hard to miss.</p><p><strong>Turner:</strong> It's a very flashy paint job on these aircraft, and it's one of the questions we're asked quite often, is, why is it painted the way it is? The goal is to be visible in this super-dense smoke. It's a very action-packed circuit when these guys are fighting the fires, and safety is the ultimate goal.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> For aerial <keyword id="6359722" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="firefighters">firefighters</keyword>, the next game-changing innovations aren't going to come to the planes themselves.</p><p><strong>Sheehy:</strong> The next ridgeline for aerial firefighting is going to be data. It's going to be understanding what the fire is doing, where it's going, where it's came from, and being able to share that data with as wide a population as possible. That can better inform our aerial response, better inform the ground response, and make sure that those citizens affected by the incident are given the best information possible to protect themselves, their families, and their livelihood.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> In the meantime, aerial-firefighting aircraft like the Super Scooper are tasked with keeping forest fires in check.</p><p><strong>Sheehy:</strong> Flying this aircraft in the environment we fly it in, it's very exciting, it's very dangerous, but it's also very fun.</p>

Raipur, Jun 21 () Chhattisgarh Forest Minister Mohammad Akbar has urged the Centre not to allow auctioning of coal blocks located in Hasdeo forest, proposed Lemru elephant reserve and the catchment areas of the Mand river in the state so as to protect environment. <p>The minister has written a letter to Union Minister for Environment and Forests Prakash Javdekar, a state government official said on Sunday. </p><p>Central and northern regions in Chhattisgarh are densely forested and have abundant coal reserve. </p><p>Presently, mining activities are already being carried out by various Central, state and private firms in theses region, the forest minister said in the letter. </p><p>However, the auction of coal blocks in the catchment areas of the two important rivers Hasdeo and Mand is also proposed in these regions, he said. </p><p>Notably, the state government recently decided to declare 1,995 sq km of the area adjoining the Hasdeo river as Lemru Elephant Reserve, in view of the continuous increase in the population of pachyderms and to prevent incidents of human-elephant conflicts, he said. </p> Citing the conservation measures being taken in the regions, Akbar has requested the union minister to exclude the coal blocks located in Hasdeo forest, adjoining areas of the Mand river and areas within the purview of the proposed elephant reserve, from auctioning to be conducted by the Centre, the official said. Chugging Out To Sea: Five Coast-hugging Train Rides Along Indian Shores

<ul><li>The photographs of Saya, a rare black panther residing in the <keyword id="9527016" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="kabini-forest">Kabini forest</keyword> of India, have gone viral, with people comparing it to Bagheera from the Jungle Book.</li><li>In an interview with Business Insider, Shaaz Jung, the wildlife photographer, shares how he has spent the last five years capturing the black panther.</li><li>For Jung, this was once in a lifetime opportunity.</li></ul>The photographs of Saya, a rare black panther residing in the Kabini forest in Karnataka, India, have gone viral. <br /><br />The man behind the camera, Shaaz Jung⁠— who spent 12 hours a day for five long years tracking the panther⁠— was more surprised how these pictures broke the internet. <br /><br />  <div type="image" title="Shaaz Jung" msid="76830780" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt; &amp;#8220;My first reaction was this is so typical of the internet today &amp;#8211; the digital age where anything, anywhere can just go viral,&amp;#8221; Jung told Business Insider. &amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br /><strong>Capturing Saya – the rare black panther</strong><br /><br />The 31-year old wildlife filmmaker and photographer has spent the last five years solely documenting Saya – the melanistic leopard who has found his way into the Kabini forest.<br /><br />“When people see these pictures, they think there are several leopards, but actually there’s just one black panther where we are – one melanistic leopard in the dense forest of Nagerhole. So, it was like finding a needle in a haystack,” said Jung, who also owns a wildlife safari lodge in Nagarhole National Park. Jung said the park is one of the few places in the world that have tigers, leopards, the black panther, elephants, bears, dholes and more. “This is truly the real jungle book,” he said.<br /><br />For two-three years straight, Jung has been going into the jungle at 6 am, spending all day out there till 6.30 pm, for all seven days in a week. “I would consider myself very lucky if I saw him twice a week and a lot of times it would be just fleeting glimpses,” he said. <br /><br />  <div type="image" title="The Jungle is Watching" msid="76830787" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The Jungle is Watching&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />But Jung knew that this was once in a lifetime opportunity, so far black panthers were only studied in the forests of Malaysia with the help of remote camera traps. <br /><br />“The result is the first portfolio of a melanistic leopard where we have got him hunting, courting, fighting everything. My aim was to go deeper and understand how he is surviving in a forest where he doesn’t belong,” he said. <br /><br />Black panthers are usually found in evergreen forests, where the thick canopy of trees doesn’t let the sun into the undergrowth, but Saya is found in the deciduous forest of Kabini. “He is not just surviving, he is thriving,” said Jung.<br /><br /><strong>From a family of wildlife enthusiasts</strong><br /><br />Jung is the ambassador for Nikon India and also recently worked as the director of photography for a National Geographic film on the rare black panther. <br /><br />The virality began when a Twitter handle called ‘Earth’ picked it up and soon thousands of people across the world were sharing the photos. INTERVIEW: Shaaz Jung opens up about the blood, sweat and years behind the viral images of a rare black panther

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The story of climate change is closely tied to that of the carbon cycle.</p><p>The increasing amounts of carbon dioxide hanging in our atmosphere - as opposed to being locked up in the world's oceans, soils, and forests - are leading to broken heat <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/7-months-of-hottest-records-october-2014-11">records</a> and scary <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-earth-would-look-like-if-ice-melted-world-map-animation-2015-2">predictions</a> of what our world might look like without ice sheets.</p><p>To better understand how big a role trees play in this carbon cycle, NASA has recently granted a spot aboard the International Space Station to an instrument to measure the carbon in Earth's forests.</p><p>The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation lidar, or GEDI (pronounced "Jedi", à la Star Wars) will determine the total volume of trees on Earth, and analyze how that figure might have changed over time. That's juicy data, because <a href="http://www.fs.fed.us/nrs/pubs/gtr/gtr_nrs90/gtr-nrs-90-chapter-5.5.pdf">fully half</a> of a tree's dry weight is carbon.</p><p>"If you were to cut the tree down, let it dry out and weigh it, half of its biomass that's there is carbon," Ralph Dubayah, of the University of Maryland, College Park, told Business Insider.</p><p>The university designed GEDI, which will be built (at a cost of $94 million) at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center a few miles away. The instrument will make its way to space in 2018.</p><p>"The biggest natural sink of terrestrial carbon lies in our forests and trees," Steve Running, of the University of Montana, <a href="http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Features/ForestCarbon/">told</a> NASA's Earth Observatory. "So one of the most important things we can do for understanding the carbon budget is to get a better inventory of the carbon we have in our trees."</p><p>The Earth Observatory says that of the nine billion tons of carbon (mostly carbon dioxide) burnt by fossil fuels every year, four end up in the atmosphere, two in the oceans, and three in "ecosystems on land," including forests, but it's still unknown where those sinks are located.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>Dubayah describes this land-bound carbon as a missing link in the carbon cycle. Much of it is unaccounted for, but not unlike dark matter, scientists know it's there.</p><p>Conversely, some tropical forests may in fact be acting as carbon sources, especially during strong El Niño years in which drought leads to tree death, decomposition, and carbon release.</p><p>"We're not quite sure what is happening in terms of are these forests acting as sources or are they acting as sinks, and that's part of what we're trying to figure out," Dubayah said.</p><p>A 2004 <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1693329/">study</a> on the "source versus sink" question laments that "there are no tropical forest sites for which existing plot data are sufficient to determine whether the forest is acting as a carbon sink or source." Its author, Deborah Clark of the University of Missouri-St. Louis' biology department, told Business Insider that the data gap still stands.</p><p>Speaking with Business Insider, Steve Running explained that "we have a good enough idea of the status quo" regarding forest cover across the world. But beyond that, GEDI "would be a real important part of a monitoring system globally that would allow us to very accurately see change."</p><p>"We would simply know from one year to the next whether what we thought was on this hectare is still there," Running said.</p><p>Brent Mitchell, a lidar specialist at the Remote Sensing Applications Center in Salt Lake City, agrees. "The biggest piece [about GEDI] is having that repeat coverage and being able to monitor things over time," he told Business Insider.</p><p>Mitchell has used fixed-wing aircraft in his lidar research for the past five years, but flights aren't frequent enough and don't cover a big enough area to track change on a useful scale.</p><p>A space-based instrument could solve that problem.</p><p><strong>That's why GEDI matters. Here's how it works.</strong></p><p>Lidar technology (a combination of the words "light" and "radar") beams light to a target and analyzes how it bounces back.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>"So you have this kind of bell-shaped distribution of energy, that's going towards the surface," said Dubayah. "If it hits a totally flat surface it gets reflected straight back as a bell."</p><p>Of course, that's not the case for most of Earth's surfaces.</p><p>"When it hits a tree, the tree does weird stuff to this bell," he added. "The tree kind of starts to extend it, distorts it, makes it look kind of like an echocardiogram." These changes in the laser light are detected by the instrument when they return.</p><p>The information they get back is precise enough to "detect subtle variations, including the tops of trees, the ground, and the vertical distribution of above ground biomass in forests," according to NASA's <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/content/goddard/new-nasa-probe-will-study-earth-s-forests-in-3-d/#.VOOd57DF_fN">release</a> about the project.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>At any one time, GEDI will shoot three beams across several tracks each 500 meters apart. "We'll take those facts and we'll make estimates of the distribution of canopy height within 500 meter cells," said Dubayah.</p><p>The team will also combine their data with other satellite data - including that from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/landsat-8-satellite-images-from-space-2014-11">the Landsat program</a> - to fill in the blanks.</p><p>The measurement they're after is metric tons per hectare. To help them convert their data - height and distribution of the woody material - into mass, researchers will bring in their knowledge of the type of trees lying underfoot. Coniferous trees, for instance, aren't as dense as deciduous ones, according to Dubayah: "Oak is a lot heavier than pine."</p><p>During a year aboard the ISS, GEDI will fire about 15 billion pulses of light, according to Dubayah (out of concerns for power, the instrument will ramped down when trained over Earth's oceans).</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>Because of the ISS's orbit, only surfaces between 50th parallel north and 50th parallel south will be subject to GEDI's scrutiny. The instrument can be pointed slightly left or right to maximize coverage, but that still leaves out most of Canada and Russia's boreal (or taiga) forests, which according to TV series <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/habitats/Taiga#p02d9v40">Planet Earth</a> make up a third of the trees on Earth.</p><p>Another limitation is the sensor is time. GEDI only gets one year on the International Space Station - there are only ten instrument spots in the exposed facility, which makes them very coveted.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>"What we would really want, though, is to have our own satellite in space so we that don't have this kind of limitation, and so that we can cover boreal forests," said Dubayah.</p><p>"Our nominal mission length is one year, which means that we accomplish our <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">science</keyword> objectives in one year." NASA has a plan to take the most detailed scans the world's forests ever

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container"><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>NASA Earth Observatory</span></p></div><p></p></div>Spring came early to southern Alaska in 2014, bringing warm and dry weather. By the end of May, vegetation was already primed to burn. So when a fire broke out on the Kenai Peninsula on the evening of May 19, 2014, it quickly blew up into a massive wildfire. Called the <a href="http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/3878/">Funny River Fire,</a> it had burned more than 43,000 acres by 5:30 p.m. local time on May 21.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://landsat.gsfc.nasa.gov/?p=5447">Operational Land Imager</a> on the <a href="http://landsat.gsfc.nasa.gov/?page_id=4071">Landsat 8</a> satellite acquired these images at 1:13 p.m. local time on May 20. The top image shows the scene in natural color, while the lower <a href="http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Features/FalseColor/page6.php">false-color image</a> incorporates short wave infrared light (bands 6, 5, 3). Each view provides unique information about the fire.</p>
<p>Smoke is the dominant feature in this image: <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>NASA Earth Observatory</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>The dense smoke masks the fire, which is trouble for firefighters trying to control the blaze from the air. Billowing above the smoke plume are at least two <a href="http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Features/PyroClouds/page1.php">pyrocumulonimbus clouds</a> - thunderclouds formed when superheated air rises above an intense fire. </p>
<p>Hail, lightning, and strong winds often occur where there are pyrocumulonimbus clouds. These clouds also loft smoke high into the atmosphere, allowing it to travel long distances. The smoke plume for the Funny River fire <a href="http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/view.php?id=83725&amp;eocn=home&amp;eoci=nh">arched hundreds of kilometers</a> across the Gulf of Alaska and <a href="http://dec.alaska.gov/Applications/Air/airtoolsweb/Advisories">affected air quality</a> across the Kenai Peninsula and south-central Alaska.</p>

<p>Smoke is blue, while the higher, cooler pyrocumulonimbus clouds are white. The newly burned land is dark brown. The active fire area is orange and appears to be burning on both the eastern and western edges of the burn area.</p>
<p>The vegetation around the fire has patches of brown-red in the lower image. This could be the burn scar from an old fire, or it could be <a href="http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=78677">insect-killed trees.</a> The fire is burning in the <a href="http://www.fws.gov/refuge/Kenai/">Kenai National Wildlife Refuge,</a> which was the center of a <a href="http://www.fws.gov/refuge/Kenai/what_we_do/resource_management.html">spruce bark beetle outbreak</a> that spread across four million acres of south-central Alaska. <a href="http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/3878/">Firefighters noted</a> that efforts to clear beetle-killed trees is now limiting the fire's growth.</p><div class="feed-footer-wrapper"><div class="feed-footer">

NASA Captures Crazy Images Of A Huge Alaskan Forest Fire From Space

<ul class="summary-list"><li>After spending over 30 years <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/high-end-golf-course-mistakes-to-avoid-seasoned-golfer-2024-8">writing about golf</a> and visiting over 200 courses, I have favorites.</li><li>Cypress Point Club and Spyglass Hill are both beautiful courses in California.</li></ul><p>A great golf course is like a classic work of statuary — except that the medium is the earth itself, not just a hunk of marble or wet clay.</p><p>Given the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.ngf.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/AGIC_Economic-Impact-Report-2023.pdf">US golf industry's economic impact</a> is in the billions and has reportedly grown by 63% in the past two decades, it's no surprise there are so many course options.</p><p>I've been writing about golf and travel for over 30 years and played hundreds of such green jigsaw puzzles. The best architects use the natural flow of the land and native trees and grasses to fashion a route that's fair yet challenging. </p><p>It's hard to narrow down my favorite courses, but these stand out for their beauty and enduring appeal to golfers of all skill levels.</p><p>Here are eight of my all-time <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-golf-courses-in-america-2014-5">favorite golf courses</a>.</p><h2 id="06310bc3-5c6d-4090-ac96-3e9a5cfb205f"><strong>I'll never forget Cypress Point Club in Pebble Beach, California</strong></h2><div type="image" title="An aerial view of Pebble Beach golf course along rocks and ocean" height="3368" width="5000" msid="114665017" hostid="261" sizebytes="1541260"></div><p>I was lucky to golf at an Alister MacKenzie-designed course while at the University of Michigan for four years. I never dreamed I'd one day survey the golf-course architect's crowning achievement, the Cypress Point Club.</p><p>Located along the Pacific Ocean in Pebble Beach, California, it's both beautiful and extremely exclusive — only 250 or so CEOs and other elites are members.</p><p>The fabled 16<sup>th</sup> hole — a par 3 with a daunting tee shot over crashing surf and craggy rocks — will live in my mind's eye forever.</p><h2 id="fb3afa20-ce23-444a-a110-535aace15f6c">The nearby Spyglass Hill is also incredible</h2><p>Just down the coast from Cypress Point stands Spyglass Hill, a classic Robert Trent Jones Sr. design along the Pacific.</p><p>It's well worth the stiff greens fees — around $415 — given its prized location by Carmel-by-the-Sea and its perennial popularity among golfers.</p><p>Spyglass is a three-layer confection: it courses up and downhill through dense pine forests and austere sand dunes — it even has a too-brief encounter with the sea.</p><h2 id="14a36765-17a4-406a-a983-d02504c0da55"><strong>Forest Dunes Golf Club in northern Michigan is one of the Mitten State's best-kept secrets</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Overview of Forest Dunes Golf Club with large bodies of water in irregular shapes surrounded by golf course greens with irregularly shaped sand bits and trees behind the course" height="3948" width="5272" msid="114665018" hostid="261" sizebytes="1390472"></div><p>To create Forest Dunes Golf Club, golf pro Tom Weiskopf routed 18 holes through aromatic, pine-studded sand dunes in the middle of Michigan farm country.</p><p>Forest Dunes alone is worth the trek to Roscommon, Michigan, and you must also play its ingenious companion course, The Loop.</p><p>A rare Tom Doak "reversible" design, The Loop features two distinct, 18-hole layouts on the same piece of earth. Play it one way on Monday and then enjoy an entirely different routing on Tuesday.</p><h2 id="af37547c-84c6-4e34-ba9d-5060cc69ef0b">Bandon Dunes Golf Resort is located on a majestic stretch of unspoiled Oregon coastline</h2><p>No modern golf fan can fail to pay homage to Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Oregon, where seven different courses perch above the ocean on 2,500 acres.</p><p>It was designed by architect David McLay Kidd and inspired by the ancient links courses of Scotland, which were typically set on grassy natural areas between sea and land. The course is an homage to his Scottish heritage, with gusting winds and panoramic views of the entire property.</p><p>It's huge — plan on staying a week at the resort and booking a foot massage upon your return. By the last glorious hole, you might log 40 miles on your feet.</p><h2 id="47aaa557-1d30-405c-988e-0512b65e6f94"><strong>Gamble Sands in remote Brewster, Washington, is a must-visit destination</strong></h2><p>Golfers of every skill level will enjoy Gamble Sands' capacious fairways and equally generous greens. Nothing beats its three drivable par 4s overlooking the Columbia River.</p><p>You can also stay on the property and play its short, 14-hole course, Quicksands, for a between-meals amuse bouche.</p><p>Plus, a second 18-hole Kidd-designed course is set to debut here in 2025.</p><h2 id="b783b3bf-a6fc-4407-8ebc-3453eb33ee7d"><strong>Scottsdale has </strong>some of Arizona's finest courses</h2><div type="image" title="View of mountains in Arizona in distance in front of golfers on green" height="3774" width="5661" msid="114665019" hostid="261" sizebytes="688596"></div><p>Scottsdale, Arizona, is home to over 200 golf courses and is a choice <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quartzsite-arizona-nomadland-location-snowbirds-cheap-rv-resorts-2024-2">winter getaway for snowbirds</a> from all over.</p><p>The deepest-pocketed of them probably call the private gated community Desert Mountain their home away from home.</p><p>There are six Jack Nicklaus courses on the property.
