<ul><li>Delhi has reported a surge in <keyword id="20233512" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dengue-cases" source="keywords">dengue cases</keyword>, with 300 new cases reported in the last seven days.</li><li>This takes the total number of dengue cases reported in Delhi to 1,229 in 2024.</li><li>There has also been a rise in malaria and <keyword id="22649903" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chikungunya-cases" source="keywords">chikungunya cases</keyword>.</li></ul>Delhi has reported over 300 dengue cases in the past seven days, taking the total number of cases in the national capital so far this year to 1,229 as mosquito-borne diseases seemingly are on a slow but steady rise in the city, according to official data. Cases of malaria are considerably higher so far when compared to last year. Delhi has reported 363 malaria cases till this month while the figure stood at 294 in the corresponding month in 2023. As per a PTI report, the total malaria cases last year were 426. Most malaria cases are reported from the West Delhi zone. As for Chikungunya, 43 cases have been reported so far. This is nearly double than last year when the figure stood at 23. A total of 65 cases of the virus were reported last year. The most number of chikungunya cases have been reported from the South Delhi zone this year. Last week, the city witnessed a spike of nearly 250 cases of dengue in seven days. As per Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) data from January till September 21, a total of 1,229 dengue cases have been reported in the city with the death of a 54-year old registered in Lok Nayak Hospital, a senior official at the hospital had confirmed. Delhi reported 651 cases of dengue this month. Last month, a total of 256 dengue cases were reported in the city. The number of cases has become three-digit since August, it said. Last year, Delhi reported 3,013 dengue cases till the corresponding month, a manifold increase from 525 in 2022. A total of 9,266 cases were reported in the entire year while 19 dengue deaths were registered in the city last year. In September alone, the figure stood at 2,141 cases in 2023. The most number of cases this year are reported from the Najafgarg zone at 180. In a week, 45 cases have been reported in the area, the highest of all the zones besides the south zone where an equal number of cases were reported this week. The non-MCD areas governed by other agencies like NDMC, Delhi Cantt, and Railways, reported 312 dengue cases to the total tally, as per the data. To enforce mosquito control laws, the MCD has issued over 1.14 lakh legal notices and 39,338 challans to those who allowed mosquito breeding on their properties. Repeat offenders have been fined Rs 24.82 lakh, and police complaints have been filed against 9,241 people who didn't follow the rules, as per the data. The civic body also plans to increase fogging operations at major upcoming public events like Dussehra and Durga Puja and step up inspections and anti-larval measures in areas with high mosquito populations to curb the infectivity of the virus. Pharmaceutical companies and vaccine makers who have successfully completed their first and second phase of clinical trials can submit their expressions of Interest (EOI) by March 11, as per a <a href="https://www.livemint.com/science/health/india-set-to-carry-out-phase-3-clinical-trials-for-vaccine-against-dengue-11646595145856.html">report</a> by Livemint. The third phase of the clinical trials will be conducted in India itself. According to the <keyword id="43588" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-health-organization" source="Orion">World Health Organization</keyword>, Asia accounts for 70% of the dengue cases reported out of 129 countries and an estimated 100-400 million infections occur each year, over 80% are generally mild and asymptomatic. India reported 1,23,106 dengue cases in 2021 till the month of October, as per the data by the National Centre for Vector Borne Diseases Control, which is a body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Dr. Samiran Panda, additional director general of ICMR said, “We all know that dengue is a major public health disease and till date, India does not have safe and effective vaccine against dengue virus disease. The ICMR has been mandated to address the growing demands of scientific advances in biomedical research and find practical solutions to the health problems of the country. Therefore, we have invited pharmaceutical companies/vaccine manufacturers to collaborate with us for a phase three clinical trial to develop a safe and effective <keyword id="1084305" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dengue-vaccine" source="Orion">dengue vaccine</keyword>.” ICMR will provide all the technical assistance to the companies for conducting phase three trials by helping out in study planning and development and implementation. “ Under this EoI [expression of interest], ICMR offers institutional infrastructure for undertaking further research and development (R&amp;D) and vaccine clinical trials for evaluation of efficacy along with safety and immunogenicity as per regulatory requirement,” said an ICMR document. India’s upcoming Dengue vaccine – All you need to know

While Delhi and many other states including Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal have seen a sudden spurt in <keyword id="64895" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dengue-cases" source="Orion">dengue cases</keyword> in the last couple of days, government data showed that the number of <keyword id="6360092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dengue" source="Orion">dengue</keyword> cases has recorded a significant rise in the last few years. Moreover, states like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan witnessed the maximum number of cases of dengue during 2021 among all the states. Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan recorded 29750, 23389 and 20749 dengue cases respectively during 2021. Delhi also recorded a significantly higher number of cases at 13089 during the same year. A total of 1.93 lakh cases were reported from all across the country in 2021. Government data revealed that 2020 had witnessed a remarkably lower number of 44,585 cases probably due to the Covid related restrictions in most parts of India as against 1.57 lakh cases in 2019. This year, a considerable number of dengue cases have been reported from Delhi and many cities of Uttar Pradesh. As per reports, UP has so far registered over 2,200 dengue cases, with the state capital Lucknow reporting over 300 cases. Similarly, Delhi has also recorded nearly 1000 cases. Officials said that October can be the most vulnerable period for the spread of dengue in Delhi and recent spells of rain have only added to the woes. Recently, the Delhi government asked hospitals to reserve 10-15 per cent beds for patients of vector-borne diseases. Government data showed that 346 deaths were reported across the country due to dengue in 2021 as against 56 deaths in 2020 and 166 deaths in 2019. The central government intervenes whenever there is a sudden rise in dengue cases. Reports said that a six-member team has been sent to Uttar Pradesh very recently by the <keyword id="83655" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-Health-Ministry" source="Orion">Union Health Ministry</keyword> to collaborate with the state authorities in taking public health measures for dengue management in the districts of Firozabad, Agra and Etawah. The National Centre for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC) is the nodal agency under the umbrella of the National Health Mission for Vector Borne Diseases (including dengue) prevention and control in the country. The NCVBDC has issued multiple advisories to the States/UTs for detection and control of outbreaks, preparedness and capacity building to take effective measures for vector control, involvement of the non-health sector, ensuring availability of drugs, diagnostics, insecticides, equipment and to fill up the vacant positions of entomologists. Moreover, training has been imparted to doctors on case management and to entomologists on integrated vector control at the central and state level. As per a parliament reply on August 2, 2022, free diagnostic facilities through 769 Sentinel Surveillance Hospitals and 17 Apex Referral Laboratories have been made functional. 1.92 lakh IgM tests have been provided by the Centre. It said that the NCVBDC provides technical guidelines for prevention, control, and management of dengue cases in States/UTs. Dengue cases show a spike, October is the most vulnerable month

The hospitals across West Bengal, both public and private, are overflowing with <keyword id="6360092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dengue" source="Orion">dengue</keyword> patients. According to an official in the state health department, 800-900 cases are being reported on an average daily. This could send West Bengal to the top of the list among the states in the country where dengue cases have been reported, in just over a month. According to the figures released by the National Center for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NVBDCP), West Bengal had reported only 239 cases till August 31. In the 40-odd days since, the number of cases in the state has surpassed 20,000, the state health department admits. Apart from Kolkata, most cases are from districts like North 24-Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, Murshidabad, Siliguri and Darjeeling. "Lack of proper sanitation, clogged drainage systems, accumulation of rain water due to unplanned urbanisation are some of the reasons behind this spurt. There has certainly been some negligence on the part of civic bodies entrusted with monitoring the situation and combating the threat. Sufficient intervention was not carried out and efforts weren't made to prevent the accumulation of water near human settlements. The presence of cattle sheds, encroachments and the like in urban and semi-urban areas added to the mess," the official in the state health department said. There was hardly any activity by the civic bodies over the last fortnight due to Durga Puja celebrations across the state. State government offices -- including civic bodies -- have remained closed since October 1 and will open from Monday. Health officials hope that measures will be taken on a war-footing thereafter to prevent further spread as hospitals have started running out of space, despite opening temporary wards for the dengue patients. West Bengal's record hasn't been too good, so far as combating the disease is concerned. In 2015, it recorded fourth highest figures after Delhi, Punjab and Haryana. In 2016 and 2017, West Bengal was at the top of the list. No records were available for the next two years from the state. In 2020, West Bengal was again in second position after Punjab. Doctors say that more than the figures, people's suffering is what matters. Dengue cases in Bengal shot up by 20,000 in a month

The number of <keyword id="6360092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dengue" source="Orion">dengue</keyword> cases witnesses a sharp rise in September with more than 400 new infections being reported in the last week of the month. A total of 693 cases of dengue were reported last month till September 28, according to a report released by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Monday. The city recorded a total of 525 dengue cases till September 21 this year while 412 fresh cases were reported in the week that followed, taking the tally of the vector-borne disease in the city to 937 so far this year, it said. In 2015, the city had witnessed a massive dengue outbreak, with the number of cases crossing 10,600 in October. It was Delhi's worst dengue outbreak since 1996. Of the 937 total cases recorded till September 28 this year, 75 were reported in August. It is also the highest number of dengue cases logged during the January 1-September 28 period since 2017, when the corresponding figure was 2,152. No death has been reported so far this year due to the disease. A total of 125 cases of malaria and 23 cases of chikungunya have also been reported this year in Delhi till September 28, the report said. The MCD has said that it has been conducting drives to check the spread of dengue. Amid a spike in dengue cases in the national capital, many people down with viral infection are exhibiting "overlapping symptoms" of Covid and the vector-borne disease, leaving both patients and doctors perplexed about the exact diagnosis. Cases of vector-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria are usually reported between July and November, sometimes stretching till mid-December. Its symptoms include high fever, headache, rash and muscle and joint pain, which are quite similar to that of Covid which also includes fever or chills, muscle or body aches, fatigue and headache among others. In such a situation it has become difficult to ascertain whether a person suffering from fever, body ache and headache is Covid positive or not, doctors said. Amid the continuous spurt in dengue cases, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had recently said that a plan has been devised to combat the vector-borne disease. Last year, 9,613 dengue cases were recorded in the city, the highest since 2015, along with 23 deaths -- the maximum since 2016. According to the MCD report, the city recorded 23 dengue cases in January, 16 in February, 22 in March, 20 in April, 30 in May, 32 in June and 26 in July. According to the MCD report, breeding of mosquito larvae has been found at 1,30,544 households this year till September 28. Authorities issued 96,189 legal notices for mosquitogenic conditions, and 35,668 prosecutions were launched. In 2018, Delhi had reported 481 dengue cases during the January 1-September 21 period, according to the report. The figures in 2019, 2020 and 2021 were -- 282, 212 and 273, respectively. Ten deaths each were reported due to dengue in 2016 and 2017, four in 2018 and two in 2019. <ul><li>According to a recent study posted by PLOS, <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> ranks number one globally for the most cases of these 11 <keyword id="916291" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="neglected-tropical-diseases">neglected tropical diseases</keyword>. </li><li>In spite of that, India has made a significant progress in the recent years towards NTD control and elimination. </li><li>Today, as the International Tropic’s Day is being celebrated globally, India has the chance to bring global focus on the solutions of the issue. </li></ul>According to a recent <a href="http://journals.plos.org/plosntds/article?id=10.1371/journal.pntd.0006038">study</a> posted by the Public Library of Science (<a href="http://journals.plos.org/plosntds/article?id=10.1371/journal.pntd.0005424">PLOS</a>), India ranks number one globally for the most number of cases when it comes to 11 neglected <keyword id="918542" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="tropical-diseases">tropical diseases</keyword> (NTD). The NTDs include Ascariasis, Hookworm disease, Trichuriasis, <keyword id="6360092" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="dengue">Dengue</keyword>, Lymphatic filariasis (LF), Trachoma, Cysticercosis, <keyword id="54776" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Leprosy">Leprosy</keyword>, Cystic echinococcosis, <keyword id="958654" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Visceral-leishmaniasis">Visceral leishmaniasis</keyword> and <keyword id="6429043" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="rabies">Rabies</keyword>. NTD’s are a diverse group of communicable diseases that prevail in tropical and subtropical conditions across 149 countries, which also includes India, according to <a href="http://www.who.int/neglected_diseases/diseases/en/">WHO</a>. A study by <a href="http://www.who.int/neglected_diseases/diseases/en/">WHO</a> affirms this in a report that suggests that India has the most number of total cases of all major NTDs excluding those that are spatially bound because of transmission through unique insects or snails (e.g., schistosomiasis, onchocerciasis, human African trypanosomiasis and Chagas disease). Looking at the figures, it is <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5863936/">possible </a>that India’s high ranking extends beyond the diseases currently considered as NTDs by WHO. Since India is the world’s second most populous nation and accounts for about 18% of the world’s population, it is expected to harbour a significant NTD burden. However, the fact these diseases are also associated with economic backwardness means that India can essentially have no excuse for topping the list. The tropical country, in spite of being the seventh largest GDP in the world spends as little as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-spends-just-1-2-of-its-gdp-on-healthcare-but-a-policy-can-change-that/articleshow/64665303.cms">1.2% of its GDP</a> on healthcare. The result of this neglection is that more than 50% cases of dengue, leprosy and trachoma occur in India. While the cases trichuriasis and cystic echinococcosis in India account for about 16% and 12% of the cases across the world respectively, other NTDs - ascariasis, hookworm disease, lymphatic filariasis, cysticercosis, visceral leishmaniasis and rabies - are about 18% to 45%. Moreover, the cases of NTDs in India are <a href="http://outbreaknewstoday.com/india-ranks-1-globally-11-neglected-tropical-diseases-55417/">not evenly distributed</a>, but instead are focused in sections of poverty in both, urban and rural areas. If left unchecked the diseases are expected reduce India’s economy by impairing worker productivity and intellectual growth in children.  Internally, India has made a significant progress over the recent years towards NTD control and elimination. India is achieving a mass treatment coverage for almost <a href="http://www.who.int/neglected_diseases/preventive_chemotherapy/lf/en/">400</a> million people who are at risk of lymphatic filariasis. It has also has been committed to a multidrug therapy for leprosy for years now, however, it needs to continue or expand in order to reach 100% of the population. The optimal potential of safe and clean water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) for battling NTDs also needs to be realised. India, furthermore, hosts a sophisticated and extensive network of biotechnology organisations and private companies capable of developing vaccines, drugs, and diagnostics needed to battle the diseases. However, that hasn't been done yet due to the fact that new NTD technologies are not considered profitable. On 14 December 2017, a <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/sci-tech/health/neglected-but-treatable/article22717612.ece">collective </a>of partners working together to defeat 10 neglected tropical diseases, released its fifth report that indicated the potential of an NTD-control programme which is community-based. The report also focused on reaching marginalised populations through well-trusted health workers and free medication to the population. As per WHO‘s 2020 roadmap to eliminate at least 10 of the NTDs, India is committed to provide the necessary resources to remove the primary risk factors for NTDs which includes poverty. WHO realises that India’s contribution is necessary for its future targets. As <a href="http://www.un.org/en/events/tropicsday/">International Tropic’s Day</a> gets celebrated globally today (28 June), India could use the opportunity to bring greater focus on the solutions of these health issues.

 With every visit, Vislawath would drop in a letter to the local municipal authorities. Seventeen letters went unresponded and he finally decided to visit them, one of whom said, “Educated people like you need to be helping out authorities in these situations.” That’s when the IIT Guwahati graduate took a step back from his active role as the co-founder of Raasta Films, a filmmaking company and decided to build his second startup along with his batchmates Sai Kumar Chinthala and Suraj Peddi. They built Marut Drones – a startup that uses drones to spray <keyword id="65563" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mosquito">mosquito</keyword> killing repellent in Hyderabad’s massive lakes. “These lakes have water hyacinths growing in them, which often makes it difficult for authorities to enter and spray repellents. Workers too are prone to diseases when they enter water, as it also takes a long time to clean. With the drone we can easily target specific areas where larvae are breeding,” Vislawath told Business Insider. What disturbed Vislawath was that as many as 9.7 million cases of mosquito borne diseases are reported in a year. They lead to 40,297 deaths. The startup claims to have built India’s first drone to eradicate mosquitoes larvae and water hyacinth on lakes as well as autonomous drones that spray on agricultural fields. They also use an AI platform to identify mosquito borne diseases and the areas where they breed. “All of Hyderabad has only 17 entomologists. Only when a complaint comes in, a manual survey is done to check for mosquito breeding. They don’t have real time data. With our technology, a dashboard will show them the data of different breeds of mosquitoes,” he said. Marut Drones has built an IOT device, which captures mosquitoes within a 500 metre range and identifies whether its male or female and what kind of disease it could be carrying. Based on that, they give recommendations on whether the specific area has larvae or adult mosquitoes and how to deal with it. Interestingly for Vislawath and Sai, it was an obvious choice to use drones as they used them for filmmaking. They partnered with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. After a pilot in March in Miyapur lake , the mosquito larval density has come down from 41 per ladle of water to 28. With great results and a boost from the Hyderabad Municipal corporation, Marut Drones is now expanding to Mumbai and Raipur. “We aim to reach out to all smart cities in the country with our effective solutions,” said Vislawath. The startup was also one of the top startups in Facebook India’s Artificial Intelligence accelerator, through which they will get a month of mentorship from the social media giant. The Philippines’ Food and Drug Administration approved <keyword id="150650" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanofi-Pasteur">Sanofi Pasteur</keyword>’s Dengvaxia, the tetravalent dengue vaccine, which will prevent the disease caused by all four dengue types in individuals from 9-45 years of age living in endemic areas. 
 
This made Dengvaxia the first vaccine to be licensed for the prevention of dengue in Asia. 
 
“Approval of the first dengue vaccine in Asia, which bears 70% of global disease burden, is a major milestone in dengue prevention and public health,” said Olivier Charmeil, President and CEO of Sanofi Pasteur.
