Zomato-owned quick commerce platform <keyword id="12724311" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="blinkit" source="Orion">Blinkit</keyword> has shut down over 100 dark kitchens in Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Noida, and Greater Noida for the past three days due to the ongoing delivery worker strikes, and it is expected that a larger number of stores will also go offline in the coming days, according to reports. Delivery executives are opposing a change in their compensation system, which they allege will result in lower profits. The media reports said that about 50-60 stores in Gurugram have closed, with more closures expected in Noida and Delhi as the new fee structure is implemented. In addition, customers in the region have been facing difficulties placing orders at offline stores that use the Blinkit app. These locations are currently marked as 'temporarily unavailable' due to ongoing maintenance, which has prompted several customers to voice their concerns on social media. Blinkit operates approximately 400 dark stores in 20 cities throughout the country, with a significant presence in the Delhi-NCR region, where half of its stores are located. Meanwhile, Zomato's consolidated loss widened to Rs 346.6 crore (year-on-year) for the quarter that ended December 31, against a loss of Rs 63 crore in the same period last year, the company said. The company said that adjusted revenue witnessed a 66 per cent growth to Rs 2,363 crore (YoY). "We think that the current slowdown is a result of a few temporary factors -- macro slowdown for the mid-market segment, boom in dining out for the premium-end, and boom in travel at the premium-end," he said in the company's earnings results. Delhivery acquires Pune-based Algorhythm Tech to strengthen its supply chain

<ul><li>In an interview with Business Insider, <keyword id="1560090" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhivery">Delhivery</keyword>’s chief technology officer and co-founder Kapil Bharati shared how the company leveraged technology to make sense of the disruption in logistics last year.</li><li>Just two-three days after the lockdown was announced in March last year, Delhivery was up and running in 4,500 pincodes and after 10 days, they were operational in 15,000 pincodes in India.</li><li>Delhivery has recently opened two new tech offices or data centres and is also hiring aggressively.</li></ul>It’s been over a year since the COVID-19 pandemic began ravaging India and disrupted the normal movement across the country, as restrictions and lockdowns took over. In this situation, one of the sectors to come forward in times of need was the logistics and supply chain industry. And leading from the front is Delhivery, which may soon get listed publicly. In an interview with Business Insider, Delhivery’s chief technology officer (CTO) and co-founder Kapil Bharati shared how the company leveraged technology to make sense of the disruption in logistics and also cut down on costs at the same time. Lockdown logistics “We started a bit early, in the beginning of March 2020, and started putting in various interventions in place for COVID-19. So by the time the lockdown actually happened, we had systems in place and the operational processes in place,” said Bharati. Just two-three days after the lockdown was announced in March last year, Delhivery was up and running in 4,500 pincodes and after 10 days, they were operational in 15,000 pincodes in India. They also used technology to quickly differentiate between essential and non-essential products to ensure seamless delivery. Kshitij Chopra, co-head, products and strategy at Delhivery explained how they went about it. “We modified the algorithms to identify the government regulations on what classifies as essential and what is non essential. That not only helped us move shipments or deliveries in the network, but also helped our business development teams to proactively reach out to clients who were shipping the same categories of goods saying ‘hey, you can actually continue shipping,’ because there was so much confusion on ground,” he said. The second problem was identifying where they can ship, since the containment zones didn’t allow deliveries. “We had people on ground, where we were able to quickly coordinate with local authorities. As and when the definition of essential was changing, we were also upgrading our backend systems,” said Bharati. And also, this is helping the SoftBank-backed logistics unicorn, which has been cutting down on its losses even before the pandemic. As per reports, in FY20, Delhivery’s net loss stood at ₹284.13 crore from ₹1,781.04 crore reported in FY19. They also doubled down on fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) and pharmaceutical clients. It was only after two-three months that the demand from e-commerce portals doubled. “After 10 months, we saw the volumes coming back to pre-COVID levels, and pretty much the entire network was up and running,” said Bharati. Using data for delivery For Delhivery, the physical infrastructure is just one part of the operations – innovating on their technology and data science capabilities is another. “We use a bunch of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) optimisation tools to answer questions like the best route, time etc., for delivery. This helps us get to a higher quality of service at a lower cost,” said Chopra. Delhivery also has a proprietary system, which does geocoding and helps connect last mile riders with end consignees in an efficient way. “Location intelligence is one big area for us, where we continue to develop our capabilities and keep on integrating it back into our system so we can drive more and more automation and system direction. The second is customer intelligence and the third aspect is product intelligence,” said Bharati. Hiring and tech expansions Delhivery’s focus remains in expanding its tech capabilities. The startup had also recently acqui-hired retail tech platform Primaseller in March 2021. And tech leaders of the company said that this acquisition also helped them in getting the right talent into the company. “We continue to look for such companies, startups especially, who are working in the space adjacent to us or in the data, AI/ML side of things. We constantly look for such potential partners that we can partner with or even a possible acquisition,” said Bharati. Delhivery has recently opened two new offices or data centers and is also hiring aggressively. “We are doubling down on our campus hiring this year,” he said. According to a RedSeer report from September 18, e-commerce gross merchandising volume could hit $7 billion this year during the festive season, a big jump from $3.8 billion last year. Jobs to surge as companies prep for the festive season According to another report by RedSeer, this festive season will help create over 300,000 permanent and temporary jobs. “We expect the total shipments during festive sales for the first event to grow 60% y-o-y over CY19 to reach 150 million,” said the report. Amazon has already announced that it has created more than 100,000 seasonal job opportunities ahead of the festive season. “This year, more than 100,000 seasonal associates will join us to fulfill customer promises. We remain committed to creating job opportunities across the country, especially at a time when the pandemic has posed challenges in earning livelihood for many”, said Akhil Saxena, Vice President - APAC, MENA, and LATAM Customer Fulfilment Operations, Amazon India, in a statement. Meanwhile, Flipkart had said that it’s Big Billion Days will create 70,000 direct and lakhs of indirect jobs., “As a front runner in e-commerce, our training and investment in the workforce is widely recognised, and contributes to skill development and enhances employability. By generating employment and enabling our sellers to scale their businesses during this time, we’re doing our part to drive growth in the industry and the economy,” said Amitesh Jha, Senior Vice-President, Ekart, and Marketplace, Flipkart in a statement. Logistics partner for many of the e-commerce sites, <keyword id="1560090" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhivery">Delhivery</keyword>, too said it was looking to create 15,000 seasonal jobs, as it gears up to ship 65 million to 75 million packages. New Delhi, Jan 9 () SB Investment Advisers (UK) Ltd (SBIA) on Thursday named former Google executive Vikas Agnihotri as its first operating partner in India.
 "To continue its expansion in India and bolster portfolio companies, SBIA has announced the appointment of Vikas Agnihotri as its first operating partner to foster closer connections with the region's technology ecosystem and the SBIA's global network," a statement said.
 Agnihotri joins the company from Google, where he had a stint of about a decade in various leadership roles. In his last role, he served as the interim Country Head and Managing Director of Indian operations.
 He is also on the board of Mobile Marketing Association, the Advertising Standards Council of India, and Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI).
 After launching the SoftBank Vision Fund I in 2017, SoftBank Vision Fund II was announced last year to continue the strategic investment in technology and innovation globally.
 In India, SoftBank Vision Fund I has already invested over USD 10 billion in technology companies, including Grofers, Lenskart, Delhivery, FirstCry, Oyo, Ola, Paytm, and PolicyBazaar.

	India Post has been there in the business for more than 100 years now and they are present physically in more than 47 pincodes in the country. Indian e-commerce is shifting from Tier A cities to Tier B and Tier C cities and district places. Thirty percent queries are coming from Tier B and C cities. But e-commerce shipping is done through courier services or private delivery services now which are not available on all pincodes. So one can imagine the growth this industry will enjoy by such penetration. 
	 “This year the economy is not good. There would not be much growth in e-commerce business this year. But with this penetration, the business is going to be boosted in double digit or triple digit mainly because new customers will be added,” said <keyword id="2906651" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nitin-Lodha">Nitin Lodha</keyword>, e-commerce consultant, Chitrangana.com. 
	 
	 

	But let’s have a look at what is there for India Post. 
	 “The basic services of India Post like delivering letters and parcels, money transfer are going down. So in most countries in the world the Government owned postal offices have converted themselves to full-fledged logistic companies. So this step will generate new revenue streams for India Post,” said <keyword id="359392" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Arvind-Singhal">Arvind Singhal</keyword>, chairman of retail advisory firm Technopak. 
	 The profit would be great compared to that of courier services though India Post will be competing in a market where specialist delivery firms like <keyword id="1560087" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ecom-Express">Ecom Express</keyword>, <keyword id="1560090" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Delhivery">Delhivery</keyword> and <keyword id="2904466" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Go-Javas">Go Javas</keyword> are raising venture funding to expand operations. The main reason is their infrastructure. India Post enjoys the privileges of the Indian Railways which would cut down heavily the transport cost as compared to courier services who deliver via road and through air. 
	 
	 

	There is more to it. 
	 
	 

	“It is going to be an additional revenue boost for the people. Employment by India Post would increase,” said Nitin. 
	 
	 

	But there is a slight hitch to all the merriment. 
	 
	 

	“The only problem is India Post’s poor mechanism of tracking lost parcels. If some parcel is missed, claiming that parcel and getting insurance for the product are going to be very difficult and expensive too,” he added.

E-commerce shipping a great business opportunity for India Post

<ul><li>Indian foodtech unicorn <keyword id="6358977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy">Swiggy</keyword> is reportedly scaling down its grocery and fresh produce deliveries. </li><li>However, the $3.6 billion startup said that it will continue to focus on meat, seafood, gourmet and its instant grocery delivery service — Instamart.</li><li>Even though Swiggy operates food delivery services in 500 cities, its grocery delivery service will now be restricted to 20 cities.</li></ul>Indian foodtech unicorn Swiggy is <a href="https://entrackr.com/2020/12/exclusive-swiggy-moves-away-from-grocery-and-fresh-produce-delivery/">reportedly</a> scaling down its grocery and fresh produce deliveries. “We expanded our services across the country during the lockdown as consumers turned to Swiggy not just for food but also other essentials. Given that movement restrictions have been eased, we are rolling back grocery delivery and focusing on offerings like <keyword id="9167642" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Swiggy-Genie">Swiggy Genie</keyword> where consumers can shop from any store in the city including groceries &amp; essentials or pick-up and drop-off packages,” said a Swiggy spokesperson. However, not everything will be toned down. The $3.6 billion startup said that it will continue to focus on meat, seafood, petcare gourmet and its essential delivery service Instamart, which delivers products like groceries, fresh fruits &amp; vegetables, personal care items among other things. “With a delivery promise of 30 to 45 minutes, Instamart is rapidly becoming a favourite among consumers (in Bangalore and Gurgaon) while unlocking a new dimension of convenience retailing in India,” said the spokesperson. Even though Swiggy operates food delivery services in 500 cities, it has said that it will restrict grocery to about 20 cities. “Pre-COVID, 80% of Swiggy’s business was food delivery, and the remaining came from other segments. The company expects this ratio to change to 50-50 in the next 2 to 3 years, with increased contribution from grocery, cloud kitchen, etc,” said a Goldman Sachs report from November, 2020. Interestingly, Swiggy’s rival <keyword id="830092" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato">Zomato</keyword>, which had also forayed into grocery delivery with the Zomato Markets feature had earlier said that it was scaling down the service. Both the unicorns had ramped up their offerings in <keyword id="1392240" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="grocery-retail">grocery retail</keyword> during the coronavirus lockdown when the segment saw a massive boom. This leaves the market with players like JioMart, Amazon, Flipkart, Grofers and BigBasket, which is reportedly in talks with the Tata Group for an investment.
