The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on Tuesday decided to impose a weekend curfew in the capital city in the wake of the ongoing Covid-19 resurgence. In a virtual meeting chaired by Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, the Authority suggested for weekend curfew during which no non-essential movement will be allowed. The meeting also discussed imposing more restrictions in the city in an effort to curb the unabated surge. According to the DDMA order, all government offices, except those dealing with essential services, will work from home. A cap of 50 per cent occupancy has been imposed on private offices. On Monday, Delhi reported 4,099 fresh Covid cases, the highest single-day spike after May 18, 2021 when the tally was also 4,482. The new cases have pushed the infection tally to 14,58,220. Meanwhile, an additional Covid fatality has increased the national capital's death toll to 25,110. The Covid infection in the city has climbed to 6.46 per cent, highest in the last seven months. According to the Delhi Health Department, the national capital had recorded 6.89 per cent positivity rate on May 18, 2021. Of the cases being reported in the national capital, 81 per cent are that of the new Omicron variant, Health Minister Satyendra Jain had said in the Legislative Assembly on Monday. The capital has, so far, detected 351 Omicron cases, of which 57 have been discharged from the hospital. Delhi imposes weekend curfew after CM Arvind Kejriwal tests positive of Covid-19

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday, said that a lockdown in states should be the last resort. Multiple states in India have announced night curfews and weekend lockdowns in the past few weeks. Delhi has been put under a full lockdown till April 26. But lockdowns might not be enough. Here is why according to Himanshu Sikka of Delhi-based think tank IPE Global. The government has started off with weekend lockdowns and curfews but that may not be enough to reign in this wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Some states, like <keyword id="13126" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword>, have started taking the hard calls while others wait and watch with a ‘band-aid approach’ where surgeries are required — such as going for night or weekend curfews. The big question that is looming in everyone's mind is how long a lockdown will be required to come out of the current wave. The biggest problem with this wave has been convincing the public to continue the COVID-appropriate behaviour. Then whether it’s pandemic fatigue or economic compulsions, or simple reaction to seeing their leadership flouting norms in election rallies or festive gatherings, we see the nation grabbing defeat from the hands of victory — something this cricket-loving nation had come out of in the past few years. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Even a complete lockdown won’t be enough without the infrastructure to back it up" comment="subhead" text="Even a complete lockdown won’t be enough without the infrastructure to back it up">Even a complete lockdown won’t be enough without the infrastructure to back it up</cmsannotation> Given the country's situation, major hotbeds of the pandemic will need to take hard decisions and possibly national leadership will once again need to enforce things where there is inaction. Central directives may be required soon in States like Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, etc. States like Maharashtra and Delhi would also require longer lockdowns to break the chain. But that, alone, won’t be enough. The lockdowns will need to ensure the affected get the best treatment possible to contain mortalities. The governments will need to focus on infrastructure improvement, for now, and later, for critical things like testing, oxygen supply, essential drugs and ICU beds, which have all crumbled under pressure this time. All this would require much longer than a couple of weeks to bring down the active cases from the current two million-plus to where they stood 60 days back at around 135,000. Second, the centre and states will collectively need to focus on enhancing capacities for the vaccination supply chain as it opens for all adults from May 1. A successful campaign will also require steps to remove hesitations around inoculation through large-scale strategic behavioral change in communication. Such efforts in many pockets will need to be door-to-door, as was the case during the Polio vaccination. Above all, the lockdowns will need to be used to enhance our surveillance and data analytics capacity, allowing us to understand the key indicators better, have strong prediction models ready and be prepared for the next wave.

Second, the WHO has said that the risk of infection and the potential need for hospitalisation is higher for those who have not taken the vaccines. Even though the US and UK are recording high covid-19 cases on a daily basis, the countries have decided not to introduce any new restrictions. However, work from home has once again become a norm in these countries. Many states in India, on the other hand, have proactively imposed night curfews, weekend lockdowns and other such restrictions in order to beat the third wave. Whereas, the need may be to enforce the COVID-19 protocols in places, and at times, when crowds do gather for business or otherwise. Even now, large crowds sans social distancing, and people without masks on the street, is not a rare sight in India. However, the policy response has been limited to night curfews. "Entertainment venues are places where these viruses spread the most. It's natural to bring in some restrictions there," he added. And now, as they make their way to the stock market, restaurants across the country face massive restrictions with night curfews in major cities like Mumbai, Delhi and even weekend lockdowns like in the state of Maharashtra. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/restaurants-in-maharashtra-are-staring-at-a-slow-death-as-another-lockdown-threatens-to-kill-their-business/articleshow/81924727.cms">Restaurant owners</a> fear that the second wave of COVID-19 that has been surging through the country, and the subsequent lockdowns could prove lethal for them. Barbeque Nation has already been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year, in April and May there was barely any business, eventually, the growth started from June and by November, their business was at 84% of last year’s November numbers. But Agrawal said that while there may be a short term disruption in business, their long term vision to grow in the Indian restaurant industry remains intact. “This will be the nature of the business going forward for at least a couple of quarters – different states will have different restrictions. In the short term, you would see business disruption. We believe that we have already gone through a strict lockdown in the past, and survived it and that will help us sail through this,” he had said.
