<br />A thick layer of fog blanketed <keyword id="19900881" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="delhi" source="keywords">Delhi</keyword> as the city continued to grapple with cold conditions on Tuesday morning with minimum temperature of 3.5 degrees Celsius, four notches below season's average. <br /><br />For the past four days, the minimum temperature has been hovering around 3 to 4 degrees Celsius, and the cold wave conditions are likely to continue till Wednesday.<br /><br />According to <keyword id="19897673" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india-meteorological-department" source="keywords">India Meteorological Department</keyword> (<keyword id="19933636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="imd" source="keywords">IMD</keyword>)'s forecast, the minimum temperature is going to be 3 degrees Celsius and the maximum might hover around 21.<br /><br />The IMD has also issued an orange alert for very dense fog, which has also affected the air and land traffic leading to several delays in flights and trains.<br /><br />Over 70 flights have been delayed and many were reported to have been cancelled.<br /><br />An advisory has also been issued for the travellers, which said, "While landing and takeoffs continue at the <keyword id="47045" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-airport" source="Orion">Delhi airport</keyword>, flights that are not CAT III compliant may get affected. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information. Any inconvenience caused is deeply regretted."<br /><br />Moreover, 30 trains have been delayed with the maximum number of hours being more than six.<br /><br />At 7 a.m., 100 m visibility was reported at the Palam Airport and 00 m half an hour later, whereas Safdarjung Airport recorded 50 m visibility.<br /><br />The IMD classifies fog intensity into four types: shallow, moderate, dense and very dense fog.<br /><br />The visibility ranges from 999 m to 500 m, 499 m to 200 m, 199 m to 50 m and less than 50 m, respectively.<br /><br />The Air quality continued to remain in the 'very poor' category at several stations across the city.<br /><br />In the Anand Vihar area, PM2.5 levels were recorded to be in the 'severe' category standing at 424 and PM10 reached 245 or 'poor', according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).<br /><br />The Air Quality Index (<keyword id="19916482" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aqi" source="keywords">AQI</keyword>) between zero and 50 is considered 'good'; 51 and 100 'satisfactory'; 101 and 200 'moderate'; 201 and 300 'poor'; 301 and 400 'very poor'; and 401 and 500 'severe'.<br /><br />The Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport T3 also witnessed PM2.5 levels at 420, the 'severe' category while the PM10 was at 375, falling under the 'very poor' category.<br />

Thick fog disrupts flights and trains, cold wave conditions continue in Delhi

Moderate <keyword id="6401601" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fog" source="Orion">fog</keyword> cloaked Delhi on Wednesday morning, lowering visibility to 400 metres and affecting road and rail traffic. <br /><br />A railway spokesperson said around 18 trains were running late. <br /><br />Operations at the Delhi airport remained normal, an official said. <br /><br />However, he said, three flights were returned or diverted to the Delhi airport due to bad weather in Chandigarh, Varanasi and Lucknow on Tuesday night.   <br /><br />The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the Palam airport logged the lowest visibility level of 400 metres at 2:30 am, while it dropped to 500 metres at the Safdarjung airport at 5:30 am.  <br /><br />On Tuesday, visibility levels had plunged to 50 metres at both these places. <br /><br />An IMD official attributed the improvement in visibility to south westerly winds at the middle tropospheric level and a consequent increase in temperatures in the past 24 hours. <br /><br />However, amid low temperatures, high moisture and still winds, a layer of dense to very dense fog persisted over Punjab, Haryana, northwest Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and parts of Uttarakhand.  <br /><br />At 5:30 am, visibility levels stood at zero in Bhatinda; 25m in Ganganagar,  Amritsar and Bareilly, and 50m in Varanasi, Bahraich and Ambala. <br /><br />According to the IMD, very dense fog is when visibility is between 0 and 50 metres, 51 and 200 is dense, 201 and 500 moderate, and 501 and 1,000 shallow. <br /><br />The Sadarjung Observatory, the primary weather station in Delhi, recorded a minimum temperature of 7.1 degrees Celsius, a notch below normal. Rail, road traffic disrupted due to fog in Delhi

Dense fog caused disruptions to air and rail traffic in the national capital, <keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword>, affecting over 50 flights and 18 trains. <br /><br />The Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport experienced disruptions in flight operations due to low visibility, leading to the cancellation or rescheduling of flights. Trains faced delays of several hours, due to the thick fog affecting visibility.<br /><br />According to the <keyword id="19909154" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-railways" source="keywords">Indian Railways</keyword>, 18 trains were reported arriving late in Delhi up to six hours.<br /><br />Over 50 flights' operations were disrupted, leading to rescheduling of the flights from 12 a.m. to 8 a.m.<br /><br />"<keyword id="67384" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="igi-airport" source="Orion">IGI airport</keyword> experienced dense fog with visibility 50 to 100 m during 12:30 a.m. to 6:30 a.m.," said the India Meteorological Department in a post on X.<br /><br />However, as per <keyword id="19933636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="imd" source="keywords">IMD</keyword>, the visibility improved to 350 metres at Delhi airport around 8:30 a.m.<br /><br />The IMD had predicted that dense to very dense fog conditions are also likely to continue to prevail over North India during the next four-five days.<br /><br />The air quality continued to remain in the 'very poor' category at several stations across the city.<br /><br />In the Anand Vihar area, at 9 a.m., PM2.5 levels were recorded to be in the 'very poor' category standing at 312 and PM10 reached 164 or 'moderate', according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).<br /><br />The Air Quality Index (AQI) between zero and 50 is considered 'good'; 51 and 100 'satisfactory'; 101 and 200 'moderate'; 201 and 300 'poor'; 301 and 400 'very poor'; and 401 and 500 'severe'.<br /><br />The IGI Airport T3 witnessed PM2.5 levels at 148, and PM10 was at 109, both falling under the 'moderate' category.  <br />

The Met forecasts mild rain and foggy conditions in both the states till Saturday. Dense to very dense fog is likely at many places for the next few days.<br /><br />In the plains of Punjab and Haryana, Bathinda was the coldest place with a low of 1.2 degree Celsius on January 17. Sirsa in Haryana reeled under a low of 2.4 degree Celsius, while Hisar, Karnal and Bhiwani settled at a low of 5.1 degrees, 10 degrees and 6.3 degree Celsius, respectively. <br /><br />In neighbouring Punjab, Ludhiana, Adampur and Patiala had a low of 8.9 degrees, 10.7 degrees and 8.2 degrees Celsius, respectively. The minimum temperature in the holy city of Amritsar settled at 4.7 degrees. A dense layer of fog persisted over northwest India, and adjoining central and eastern parts of the country, hitting road and rail traffic movement. <br /><br />At least 26 trains were delayed by one to 10 hours due to the foggy weather, a Railways spokesperson said. <br /><br />The Safdarjung observatory, Delhi's primary weather station, logged a minimum temperature of four degrees Celsius against three degrees Celsius on Thursday, 4.4 degrees on Wednesday and 8.5 degrees on Tuesday. <br /><br />The weather stations at Lodhi Road, Ayanagar and Ridge in Delhi recorded minimum temperatures of 3.8 degrees Celsius, 1.8 degrees and 3.3 degrees, respectively. <br /><br />On Thursday, Delhi logged a minimum temperature of three degrees Celsius -- the lowest in January in two years -- making it cooler than several hill stations. <br /><br />The cold snap is straining power grids and posing challenges to the homeless and animals. <br /><br />The Palam observatory, near the Indira Gandhi International Airport, recorded a visibility level of 200 metres at 5:30 am. <br /><br />According to the weather office, 'very dense' fog is when visibility is between 0 and 50 metres, 51 and 200 metres is 'dense', 201 and 500 metres 'moderate', and 501 and 1,000 metres 'shallow'. <br /><br />According to a senior IMD official there will be some relief from cold weather under the influence of a fresh Western Disturbance, which is likely to affect northwest India starting January 7. <br /><br />In the plains, the Met office declares a cold wave if the minimum temperature dips to four degrees Celsius or when the minimum temperature is 10 degrees or below and is 4.5 notches below the normal. <br /><br />A severe cold wave is when the minimum temperature dips to two degrees Celsius or the departure from the normal is more than 6.4 degrees. <br /><br />A cold day is when the minimum temperature is less than or equal to 10 degrees Celsius below the normal and the maximum temperature is at least 4.5 degrees below the normal. Delhi's cold snap strains power grids, threatens homeless and delays trains

<keyword id="6358777" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="New-Delhi">New Delhi</keyword>, The MET on Friday sounded an <keyword id="2917676" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="orange-alert">orange alert</keyword> for the <keyword id="6360421" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-capital">national capital</keyword> for two days till Sunday after icy winds blowing from the snow-clad <keyword id="52569" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="himalayas">Himalayas</keyword> brought down the city's mercury to nearly 3 degrees Celsius. It will be a cloudy Saturday with fog causing trouble for traffic till Monday.<br /><br />The IMD has four colour-coded warnings as per the intensity of any <keyword id="1202050" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="weather-system">weather system</keyword> -- green, yellow, orange and red. Orange alert is given to authorities to be prepared.<br /><br />The Safdarjung Observatory, which provides representative data, recorded a minimum temperature of 4.4 degrees Celsius, while Ayanagar and Lodhi Road weather stations registered 3.5 and 3.8 degrees Celsius. The city is likely to record another "severe" cold day on Friday.<br /><br />"Cold day to severe cold day at a few places and cold wave to severe cold wave conditions at many places. Ground frost at isolated places," stated IMD in its bulletin. The city will witness partly cloudy sky on Saturday and shallow fog for the three subsequent days.<br /><br />According to the head of <keyword id="3573341" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-India-Meteorological-Department">the India Meteorological Department</keyword>'s regional forecasting centre, Kuldeep Srivastava, the icy winds are blowing towards the national capital region from Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal, which had witnessed heavy snowfall on December 12.<br /><br />Besides this, the whole northern plains is in the grip of a severe cold wave. Delhi cold wave to worsen this weekend as city is put on 'orange alert'

Delhi woke up to a grey morning as an apocalyptic smog blotted out the sun from the sky and smudged landmarks from view with air quality inching closer to "emergency" levels on Tuesday. Air quality monitoring stations at Mandir Marg, Punjabi Bagh, Pusa, Rohini, Patparganj, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Najafgarh, Sri Aurobindo Marg and Okhla Phase 2 maxed out - as air quality indexes hit the 500 mark, <keyword id="67999" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Pollution-Control-Board">Central Pollution Control Board</keyword> data showed. <br /><br />The smog reduced the visibility to merely 300 meters in the morning affecting traffic, an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. <br /><br />Delhi recorded an AQI of 487 at 9 am, which falls in the "severe" category. The neighbouring cities of Faridabad (474), Ghaziabad (476), Noida (490), Greater Noida (467), and Gurugram (469) also recorded "severe" air quality. <br /><br />This is the sixth "severe" air day on the trot in Delhi. The city witnessed seven "severe" air days in November last year. <br /><br />The levels of PM2.5 - finer particles which can even enter the bloodstream - in Delhi-NCR were 605 g/m3 at 8 am - around ten times the safe limit of 60 g/m3.  <br /><br />PM10 levels stood at 777 microgram per cubic meter (g/m3) at 8 am, the highest since November June 14, 2018, when it surged to 847 g/m3, according to CPCB data. PM10 levels below 100 g/m3 are considered safe in India. <br /><br />If PM2.5 and PM10 levels are more than 300 g/m3 and 500 g/m3 for over 48 hours, emergency measures such ban on construction activities, entry of trucks and car rationing scheme can be implemented under the Graded Response Action Plan for Delhi-NCR notified by the Ministry of Environment and Forests in 2017. <br /><br />Government agencies and experts said calm wind speeds were exacerbating the effect of stubble burning and a "quick recovery" is not possible unless the number of farm fires reduces drastically. <br /><br />V K Soni, the head of the IMD's environment research centre, said a major improvement in Delhi-NCR's air quality was highly unlikely in the coming days. <br /><br />"The air quality is likely to be recorded in the upper end of the ''very poor'' category on Diwali if we discount firecrackers emissions. <p>By midcentury, an emerging public health problem will alter the way we eat, the way we travel, and the places we live. It will also make us more susceptible to mental illnesses like anxiety and depression while exacerbating allergies and increasing the reaches of the world's most infectious diseases.</p>
<p>It's climate change, and it's happening so fast it's prompted the BMJ to write a letter to the World Health Organization <a href="http://www.bmj.com/content/349/bmj.g5945">urging them to declare</a> the phenomenon a public health emergency.</p>
<p>"Deaths from Ebola infection, tragic and frightening though they are, will pale into insignificance when compared with the mayhem we we can expect for our children and grandchildren if the world does nothing to check its carbon emissions," <a href="http://www.bmj.com/content/349/bmj.g5945">wrote BMJ editor Fiona Godlee</a> in the editorial.</p>
<p>Here's a look at some of the conditions that will plague the next generation in a warmer world.</p>
<h2>1. Anxiety and PTSD</h2>

On the contrary, the number of suicidal residents <a href="http://www.nature.com/mp/journal/v13/n4/full/4002119a.html">had risen significantly</a>, along with the number of people with serious mental illness. Even in 2009, the number of suicides in New Orleans Parish <a href="http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=129482180">remained double</a> its pre-Katrina levels.</p>
<p>Because cases of mental illness and suicidal behavior increased in general in the years after the recession, which happened to coincide with the occurrence of Hurricane Katrina, it's impossible to pinpoint Katrina as the sole driving force behind the huge uptick in mental illness here.</p>
<p>However, the pattern of increases in depression and anxiety after any severe natural disaster is well documented: The mental health infrastructure in Haiti <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3335115/">nearly collapsed</a> in the wake of the 2012 earthquake there; Typhoon Haiyan, the <a href="http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2014/01/140122-noaa-extreme-weather-2013-climate-change-drought/">strongest tropical cyclone ever recorded</a> to hit land, <a href="http://wfpusa.org/blog/post-typhoon-trauma-and-recovery-one-psychologists-experience-philippines">led to a spike</a> in incidences of post-traumatic stress disorder among victims in the Philippines; and the 2011 East African drought in Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia <a href="http://www.who.int/diseasecontrol_emergencies/publications/who_hse_gar_dce_2011_3.pdf">caused existing psychosocial support networks in the region to crumble</a>.</p>
<h2>2. Heat Stroke - but not for the reason you'd think</h2>

<p>Having a psychiatric illness like depression can more than <a href="http://ehp.niehs.nih.gov/11339/">triple</a> your risk of dying during a heat wave.</p>
<p>First, depression can make it harder to take the necessary steps to protect oneself from changes in the environment. People with depression already experience difficulties with <a href="http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/08964289.2012.708682#.VCxzsyldVg8">self-care</a>, such as staying hydrated, maintaining personal hygiene, and taking their medications consistently. High temperatures can make these activities especially taxing.</p>
<p>Worse still, people who take medications to treat mental illness are especially susceptible to heat stroke, a serious condition that results when the body overheats, because many mental health medications <a href="http://dwb.unl.edu/teacher/nsf/c01/c01links/www.science.mcmaster.ca/biology/4s03/thermoregulation.html:">interfere with our body's natural ability to regulate its temperature</a>. Antipsychotics like Abilify and Risperdone, for example, block brain cells from communicating with the body's thermostat, the hypothalamus. Anticholinergics, such as Cogentin and Enablex, inhibit sweating and make it easier to overheat.</p>
<h2>3. Respiratory Disorders</h2>

<p>Ever wonder why smog always seems so much worse on a hot, sunny day? Your eyes aren't playing tricks on you. The chemical reactions that form <a href="http://www.epa.gov/groundlevelozone/health.html">ozone</a> - one of smog's main components - happen faster at higher temperatures.</p>
<p>The warmer it is outside, the more ozone gums up the air. Ozone doesn't just dirty the horizon, though. The toxin also exacerbates a host of respiratory conditions (from asthma to bronchitis and emphysema) by irritating the delicate tissue lining the lungs.</p>
<p>In recent years in some parts of the US, ground-level ozone has reached <a href="http://www.mdpi.com/1660-4601/7/7/2866">dangerous levels</a>. Overall, though, the US is a partial success story for the pollutant: Ozone levels <a href="http://www.epa.gov/airtrends/ozone.html">started to decline</a> for the first time here in the 1980s.</p>
<p>Ozone levels are still on the rise in <a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/2014GL060930/abstract">other parts of the world</a>, however, leading to more complications and even deaths from respiratory conditions that could have previously been treated. In India, levels of the pollutant were so high in 2014 that <a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/2014GL060930/abstract">scientists estimated it killed enough crops</a> to feed close to 100 million people in poverty.</p>
<h2>4. Infectious Diseases</h2>

<p>Increased heat will expand the range of pests carrying deadly disease. In the past few years, mosquitoes carrying malaria (which <a href="http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs094/en/">killed</a> 630,000 people last year) <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/03/06/us-malaria-climate-idUSBREA251V620140306">have already begun</a> creeping up mountains to recently-warmed, higher-altitude elevations, where they spread malaria to areas never previously exposed to the disease.</p>
<p>Since they've never been exposed before, people living in these areas will have zero protective immunity from the disease. The result? Malaria will be deadlier than ever.</p>
<p>Mosquitoes, which thrive in warmer climates, also carry diseases like <a href="http://www.oxitec.com/oxitec-video/dengue-fever-a-growing-problem/">dengue</a> and <a href="http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs100/en/">yellow fever</a>, which collectively kill more than 50,000 people each year. As temperatures rise, <a href="http://agadapt.ucdavis.edu/pestsdiseases/">more and more areas around the globe</a> will become increasingly hospitable to the pests.</p>
<p>Bacteria, too, will take advantage of their newly-welcoming habitats.</p>
<p>Vibrio cholerae, the comma-shaped bacteria responsible for cholera, prefers to nest in warm, coastal seawaters. As recently as last year, however, the bacteria were <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3863721/">discovered</a> floating in usually cooler Baltic Sea that separates Central and Northern Europe. Cholera now <a href="http://www.who.int/topics/cholera/en/">kills between 100,000 and 130,000 people</a> worldwide each year, almost entirely in <a href="http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs107/en/">areas where there is a lack of clean water</a>. Warming waters means that the bacteria can live longer and spread to more locations. At one site in Bangladesh, cholera risk rose <a href="http://www.nsf.gov/news/speeches/colwell/rc040214aaascholera.htm">two to four fold in the six weeks after a 9-degree Fahrenheit spike</a> in water temperature?.</p>
<h2>5. Starvation</h2>

Across Africa and South Asia - regions where much of the world's food is produced - yields of wheat, corn, and millet will fall nearly 10% by mid-century. As a result of this rocky imbalance, the price of rice and corn will skyrocket, likely <a href="http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=1909928">doubling by 2050</a>.</p>
<p>With the <a href="http://iopscience.iop.org/1748-9326/8/4/044003/article">exception of a few</a>, the majority of the world's crops will be ravaged by the new pests and diseases that take advantage of warmer temperatures.</p>
<h2>6. Dehydration</h2>
<p>Water scarcity is another emerging threat. Severe droughts have already begun plaguing the west coast of the US. In Tulare County, south of Sacramento, Calif., the board of supervisors has <a href="http://tularecounty.ca.gov/county/index.cfm/county-news/county-proclaims-local-emergency-due-to-drought/">declared a state of emergency</a>. People can't flush toilets, wash clothes, fill cups, or bathe <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/03/us/california-drought-tulare-county.html">without buckets of bottled water that are driven in</a> from elsewhere.</p>
<p>In other parts of the world, where crops that feed the rest of the globe depend on a steady stream of slowly-melting glacier water, water scarcity is an even more serious problem. The Himalayan glacier, for example, presently supplies 25% of the world's cereal crop. If it melts too quickly, however - as some estimates <a href="http://www.nature.com/news/climate-change-melting-glaciers-bring-energy-uncertainty-1.14031">suggest</a> it has already begun doing - it will become nearly <a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1365-3059.2010.02411.x/abstract">impossible</a> to meet the needs of a growing, hungrier planet.</p>

<p>Even after we adjust our lifestyles to accommodate a less hospitable planet, harsher conditions mean that far more of us can expect to develop mental illnesses, suffer from severe allergies, and contract infectious diseases. Many of us - our children or grandchildren - won't survive.</p>
<p>The BMJ <a href="http://www.bmj.com/content/349/bmj.g5945">urged the World Health Organization</a> this week to declare climate change a public health emergency. The new dilemmas that don't kill us will still, in many cases, make daily life more uncomfortable, whether we are contending with <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1480488/">a longer</a> <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17195993">allergy season</a>, <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2014/mar/28/climate-change-bad-expensive-coffee-ipcc">foods that are suddenly</a> <a href="http://www.motherjones.com/blue-marble/2014/08/climate-change-ruining-your-breakfast">out of reach</a>, or a host of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/effects-of-climate-change-2014-6">environmental catastrophes</a>.</p>
<p>But some of the most memorable effects of climate change will be the most personal, those that change not only how we live but how we die. These are some of the most surprising health challenges we'll face.</p>

<p>With the <a href="http://iopscience.iop.org/1748-9326/8/4/044003/article">exception of a few</a>, the majority of the world's crops will be ravaged by the new pests and diseases that take advantage of warmer temperatures.</p>
<p>Water scarcity is another emerging threat. Severe droughts have already begun plaguing the west coast of the US. In Tulare County, just north of Sacramento, Calif., the board of supervisors has <a href="http://tularecounty.ca.gov/county/index.cfm/county-news/county-proclaims-local-emergency-due-to-drought/">declared a state of emergency</a>. People can't flush toilets, wash clothes, fill cups, or bathe <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/03/us/california-drought-tulare-county.html">without buckets of bottled water that are driven in</a> from elsewhere.</p>
<p>In other parts of the world, where crops that feed the rest of the globe depend on a steady stream of slowly-melting glacier water, water scarcity is an even more serious problem. The Himalayan glacier, for example, presently supplies 25% of the world's cereal crop. If it melts too quickly, however - as some estimates <a href="http://www.nature.com/news/climate-change-melting-glaciers-bring-energy-uncertainty-1.14031">suggest</a> it has already begun doing - it will become nearly <a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1365-3059.2010.02411.x/abstract">impossible</a> to meet the needs of a growing, hungrier planet.</p>

<p>Ever wonder why smog always seems so much worse on a hot, sunny day? Your eyes aren't playing tricks on you. The chemical reactions that form <a href="http://www.epa.gov/groundlevelozone/health.html">ozone</a> - one of smog's main components - happen faster at higher temperatures.</p>
<p>The warmer it is outside, the more ozone gums up the air. Ozone doesn't just dirty the horizon, though. The toxin also exacerbates a host of respiratory conditions (from asthma to bronchitis and emphysema) by irritating the delicate tissue lining the lungs.</p>
<p>In recent years in some parts of the US, ground-level ozone has reached <a href="http://www.mdpi.com/1660-4601/7/7/2866">dangerous levels</a>. Overall, though, the US is a partial success story for the pollutant: Ozone levels <a href="http://www.epa.gov/airtrends/ozone.html">started to decline</a> for the first time here in the 1980s.</p>
<p>Ozone levels are still on the rise in <a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/2014GL060930/abstract">other parts of the world</a>, however, leading to more complications and even deaths from respiratory conditions that could have previously been treated. In India, levels of the pollutant were so high in 2014 that <a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/2014GL060930/abstract">scientists estimated it killed enough crops</a> to feed close to 100 million people in poverty.</p>
<p>Already, 43 million Americans live in <a href="http://www.epa.gov/airquality/greenbook/popexp.html">counties that exceed the EPA's health standards</a> for a certain type of pollution produced by burning fossil fuels called particulate matter.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.epa.gov/pm/">Particulate matter</a> consists of tiny particles so small that <a href="http://www.epa.gov/pm/graphics/pm2_5_graphic.jpg">several thousand could fit</a> on the period at the end of this sentence. The particles travel deep into the lungs, where they make breathing difficult, and irritate the eyes, nose, and throat. Particulates also damage blood vessels, <a href="http://ehp.niehs.nih.gov/121-a282/">worsening heart disease</a>. Even short-term exposure to particulate matter has been <a href="http://www.baaqmd.gov/Divisions/Planning-and-Research/Particulate-Matter.aspx">linked</a> with heart attack, decreased lung function, and premature death.</p>
