New Delhi, <keyword id="50847" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="reserve-bank" source="Orion">Reserve Bank</keyword> Governor <keyword id="6359111" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shaktikanta-das" source="Orion">Shaktikanta Das</keyword> on Tuesday said the central bank is firmly focused on bringing down inflation to 4 per cent and remains prepared to undertake policy responses to deal with supply shocks, which have become more frequent with profound implications. The current episode of high global inflation and preceding overlapping shocks of the pandemic and Russia-Ukraine war have raised significant issues and challenges for the conduct of monetary policy, the governor said in a speech on 'Art of Monetary Policy Making: The Indian Context' at <keyword id="3658227" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="delhi-school-of-economics" source="Orion">Delhi School of Economics</keyword> (DSE) <keyword id="18666750" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="diamond-jubilee-distinguished-lecture" source="Orion">Diamond Jubilee Distinguished Lecture</keyword>. He said the monetary policy framework in India has evolved in line with the developments in theory and country practices, the changing nature of the economy and developments in financial markets. Within the broad objectives, the relative emphasis on inflation, growth and financial stability has, however, varied across monetary policy regimes since independence. Das listed out steps the central bank took to deal with the situation created in the wake of the COVID pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war. Following the outbreak of the war, the central bank raised the policy rates by 250 basis points since May 2022. "After a near-zero policy rate for a prolonged period, central banks in these (advanced) economies started raising interest rates aggressively in 2022, which contributed to stress in certain banks in these economies. In contrast, our battle against inflation is not constrained by financial stability concerns. In fact, even during the COVID phase, we continuously took measures to strengthen financial stability," the governor said. The Reserve Bank, he said, has adopted a prudent approach and taken several initiatives to revamp the regulation and supervision of banks, NBFCs and other financial entities by developing an integrated and harmonised architecture. "Our banking system remains resilient and healthy with improved capital ratios, asset quality and profitability," he said. Das said the <keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword>'s experience in recent years shows that supply shocks have become more frequent with profound implications for inflation management and anchoring of inflation expectations. A key risk of sustained high inflation is that it can de-anchor inflation expectations. "It is, therefore, important to remain vigilant and take necessary steps in a calibrated and timely manner to keep expectations firmly anchored. "The Reserve Bank has been quick and calibrated while navigating through such turbulences. We look through fleeting shocks but remain prepared to undertake policy responses if such shocks show signs of persistence and getting generalised," he said. In such a scenario, monetary policy has to focus on containing the second-round effects, the governor added. "We will remain watchful of this also. The role of continued and timely supply-side interventions, as being undertaken by the government, assumes criticality in limiting the severity and duration of such food price shocks. "In these circumstances, it is necessary to be watchful of any risk to price stability and act timely and appropriately. We remain firmly focused on aligning inflation to the target of 4.0 per cent," he added. Headline inflation based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) had eased to 4.8 per cent in June 2023 from the peak of 7.8 per cent in April 2022. It, however, surged to 7.4 per cent in July, mainly on account of a spurt in vegetable prices, which have already started moderating. Das noted that low and stable inflation helps households and businesses in planning for long-term savings and investments, which ultimately drive innovation, productivity and sustainable growth. On the contrary, high and volatile inflation corrodes the economy by denting productivity and the long-term growth potential, he said, adding inflation also imposes a disproportionate burden on the poor. The Reserve Bank has been mandated to maintain price stability, keeping in mind the objective of growth. Price stability has been numerically defined as maintaining a headline CPI inflation target of 4.0 per cent with a tolerance band of +/- 2 per cent. The tolerance band provides flexibility to accommodate growth and financial stability concerns, supply shocks and measurement and forecast errors, Das said. The target is set by the government in consultation with the Reserve Bank for 5 years.

The Directorate of Education (DoE) said that these unrecognised schools violated Section 18 of the Rights to Education Act. It states that no school — other than those under the local government authority — shall function without acquiring the certificate of recognition. The unrecognised primary schools will be identified by the municipal corporation. “District DDEs should issue notices of closure to all unrecognised schools running middle class and above. The private school branch will share with DDEs a list of more than 700 unrecognised schools running in different localities of Delhi,” a DoE official<a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/700-unrecognised-schools-to-be-shut/articleshow/71605750.cms"> told </a>TOI. However, there are roughly 3,000 unrecognised schools in the city, accommodating over a million students every year, according to <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/opinion/delhi-shutting-down-unrecognised-schools-is-a-bad-move/1737898/">Delhi State Public Schools Management Association</a>. This is despite the government warning to seek recognition or halt admission from the next academic session (2018-19). In fact, the government is also cracking down on the illegal practices in government recognised schools. “Such schools should be issued a show-cause notice for withdrawal of recognition and dealt with sternly,” it said. The crisis The Delhi Economic Survey 2018-19 shows that the government schools in the city still lag in terms of learning outcomes. It highlighted that the student-teacher ratio across <keyword id="6502878" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-schools">Delhi schools</keyword> stood at 80 — which is against RTE guidelines. In addition to this, the Delhi School Education norms state that the recognition to schools will be according to the geographic location — keeping a check with other schools in the locality to as to maintain the enrollment ratio. The 49-year-old prominent Indian-American economist had joined the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as the Chief Economist in January 2019. She was the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics at Harvard University when she joined the Washington-based global lender. IMF Managing Director <keyword id="2200950" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kristalina-georgieva" source="Orion">Kristalina Georgieva</keyword> on Tuesday announced that the search for Gopinath's successor would begin shortly. "Gita's contribution to the Fund and our membership has been truly remarkable - quite simply, her impact on the IMF's work has been tremendous," Georgieva said. Mysuru-born Gopinath is the first-ever woman Chief Economist of the IMF. Harvard University had extended her leave of absence on an exceptional basis by one year, which has allowed her to serve as Chief Economist at the IMF for three years. "She made history as the first female Chief Economist of the Fund and we benefited immensely from her sharp intellect and deep knowledge of international finance and macroeconomics as we navigate through the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. "Gita also won the respect and admiration of colleagues in the Research Department across the Fund, and throughout the membership for leading analytically rigorous work and policy-relevant projects with high impact and influence," Georgieva said. The IMF said that as part of her many significant initiatives, Gopinath co-authored the "Pandemic Paper" on how to end the COVID-19 pandemic that set globally endorsed targets for vaccinating the world. This work led to the creation of the Multilateral Task Force made up of the leadership of the IMF, the World Bank, the World Trade Organisation and the World Health Organisation to help end the pandemic and the establishment of a working group with vaccine manufacturers to identify trade barriers, supply bottlenecks, and accelerate delivery of vaccines to low- and lower-middle income countries, the IMF said in a statement. Among her other key accomplishments, Gopinath helped set up a Climate Change team inside the IMF to analyse, among other things, optimal climate mitigation policies. "I would like to express my personal appreciation to Gita for her impressive contributions, her always wise counsel, her devotion for the mission of the Research Department and the Fund more broadly, as well as her widely recognised inclusive and accessible approach to colleagues and staff," Georgieva added. Born in December 1971 to Malayalee parents, Gopinath had her schooling in Kolkata and graduated from the Lady Shri Ram College of Commerce in Delhi. She did Masters from the Delhi School of Economics as well as from the University of Washington. Gopinath did her Ph.D in economics from Princeton University in 2001 and she was guided by <keyword id="147334" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kenneth-rogoff" source="Orion">Kenneth Rogoff</keyword>, Ben Bernanke and Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas. IMF chief economist Gita Gopinath to resign and return to Harvard University

New Delhi, Mar 13 () The GST Council on Saturday discussed the impact of coronavirus on the economy, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said. Briefing reporters after the 39th meeting of the GST Council, Sitharaman said the government is trying to make an assessment on the impact of coronavirus on the economy and is talking to the industry and the services sector. Meanwhile, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said that the pandemic would lead to job losses and deficit in government revenue. "Corona is not only a health crisis. It's going to be most dangerous economic crisis world is going to face. The crisis would result in job losses at large scale &amp; revenue deficits in govt. I demanded GST council should discuss this and act in advance before the systems fail," he tweeted. Ratings agencies have lowered global growth forecasts citing subdued economic activity and consumption due to the deadly virus. Coronavirus, which has been declared a global pandemic by WHO has claimed over 5,000 lives across the world and infected over 1.20 lakh people. GST Council discuss coronavirus impact on economy

She added that she didn’t know any macroeconomists who thought the note ban was useful. India’s balance of payments crisis in 1991 shaped her academic interests Before moving to America for her Masters and PhD in economics, Gopinath pursued her undergraduate and graduate degrees in economics from Lady Shri Ram College and the Delhi School of Economics. Her time at Delhi University coincided with India’s balance of payments crisis in 1990-91 and this inspired her to pursue her interest in international finance. The crisis, which stemmed from a ballooning of imports in the mid-80s, saw India battle the problem of a fiscal deficit as well as a trade deficit. Faced with a shortfall in its foreign exchange reserves, the government received an emergency loan from the IMF to cover its spending obligations, pledging its gold reserves as collateral. The move led to the liberalisation of the Indian economy. She was the economic advisor to the chief minister of Kerala Between 2016 and 2018, Gopinath has been advising Kerala’s CM, Pinarayi Vijayan, on economic affairs, having reportedly made recommendations on skill development and healthcare. Till date, this is the only role she has taken one that has required her to directly advise a central or state government. Her appointment, however, was the subject of controversy given that her free-market beliefs were in opposition to the ideals of Kerala’s left-wing parties. For example, in January 2018, she flagged the state’s growing welfare expenditure as a potential budgetary concern.

As the college is gearing up to host the 12th edition of ‘Open House’, the list of splendid innovations that will be featured at the event has already caught eyeballs across the country. 
 
This is because once again, most of these projects are not only innovative but those with “high societal impact”. 
 
Among a total of 500 research projects and 80 demo projects to be displayed are some really interesting innovations like a hip protective device for the elderly, high productivity bio-fertilizer, Mamma Pod and diagram books for blind students. 
 
There will also be these: A 5 min endotoxin detection kit, Tissue Engineering and 3D Bio printing, Design and Development of Mobile Unit for Biogas Enrichment &amp; Bottlingm among others. 
 But what’s going to be the center of attention is a system of better drainage systems for Delhi. Yes, A lot of eyes, especially from the <keyword id="6354952" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Government">Delhi government</keyword> will be on this as the event kickstarts on April 23. 
 V Ramgopal Rao, who assumed office as the premier institute’s Director three days ago, said “The idea of <keyword id="2388827" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Open-House">IIT Open House</keyword> is to identify projects where a new product or technology is created with high societal impact. We are going to connect with agricultural and healthcare institutions and would like to work on multi-disciplinary projects offering societal benefits.” 
 
IIT Delhi is expecting over 40,000 school students to visit the exposition which will be open and free for public. While demonstrations will close by 2 pm the laboratory will stay open for visitors till 4 pm. 
 
IIT IS STRIVING TO CREATE A BETTER WORLD FOR THE VISUALLY CHALLENGED 
 
The institute has been working towards providing aid to the visually-impaired for quite sometime now and had come up in the past with technology-driven devices like the blind cane, that have shown positive results. 
 
Their latest project focuses on providing blind students access to non-visual representations of diagrams and figures in subjects like maths, science, economics and geography, in tactile form at an affordable cost. 
 
Prof M Balakrishnan, who is guiding the project, said it uses the process of thermoforming with durable PVC sheets as opposed to the more expensive swell paper or the less durable embossing, while using 3D printing technology. 
 
“Thermoforming lies between embossing and swell technology. While embossing might be economical, it is less durable and prone to wear and tear. Swell technology is expensive with each paper costing Rs 100. With thermoforming, more durable diagrams are created at a nominal price of Rs 10-Rs 15 per sheet,” Renu Kaushik and Vibha Chaudhury, who are working as research scholars for the project, said. 
 
The team has been working with NCERT to bring out a map book for Upper Primary grades in blind schools. 
 
They have also brought out science and maths textbooks for ninth grade and economics textbook for the eleventh grade, besides a Yoga book for the Iyengar society that can be used by visually impaired individuals to practise yoga. 
 
Rao also emphasised on the need for tech-based initiatives and said that it will be among one of the primary areas of focus for the years to come. 
 
“I have seen that a lot of start ups are coming up but there are hardly any tech-based start-ups. We have to focus on tech and tech-incubation is what we will focus on in the next few years,” he said.

India’s top B-school campuses — Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Calcutta, Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow — scored maximum offers for tech profiles. IIM Calcutta scored over twice the tech jobs, as compared to last year — at 62. On the other hand, 68 management students were hired for IT and analytics profiles at IIM Bangalore from companies like Ola, Oyo Rooms and United Health Group among others. Consulting firms dominate at IIMs Consulting firms — KPMG, <keyword id="136162" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Boston-Consulting-Group">Boston Consulting Group</keyword> (BCG) rolled out the most number of offers. IIM Bangalore too received 126 offers from <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/jobs/consulting-companies-keep-the-show-going-at-b-school-summers/articleshow/71912004.cms">consulting firms</a> including Bain &amp; Company, BCG and Mckinsey. IIM Kozhikode got 13% more offers from consulting majors like PwC and Deloitte. IIMs aside, other b-schools like <keyword id="481185" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Management-Development-Institute">Management Development Institute</keyword> (MDI) and Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Delhi also witnessed a 40% and 14% increase in offers from consulting companies, respectively. Overall, it has been a good year for India’s B-school pass outs. On domestic job roles, the highest offer extended was at ₹2.7 lakh.
