Enrolment in Indian private schools in Dubai surged by nearly 9,000 in a year, the Emirate's private education regulator said, announcing the results of the latest Indian school inspections. The number of pupils attending Indian private schools in Dubai stood at 94,499 in 2022-23, surging ahead of previous academic year's 85,588, The National newspaper reported. Rashmi Nandkeolyar, principal at Delhi Private School Dubai, told The National: "During the pandemic, in schools like ours, which are good value for money, suddenly there was a huge influx of enrolment." "Because we had online classes, we could accommodate a few more pupils. Now we are at full capacity and we don't have a single spot." "Lots of people are moving to Dubai as it is a very safe place and budget schools like ours are doing very well. Those are definitely going to be sought after," Nandkeolyar told The National. In October, authorities said the overall private school pupil population in Dubai surged by a record 39,000 in one year. Official statistics at the time showed more than 365,000 pupils were enrolled in the Emirate, up from 326,000 in November 2022. Four Indian schools improved from acceptable to good and no schools declined in their ratings, the inspection results showed. Delhi Private School and The <keyword id="355840" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="millennium-school" source="Orion">Millennium School</keyword> were the only schools that ranked outstanding for well-being, while Gems Modern Academy in Nad Al Sheba area was rated outstanding for inclusion. Dubai has ambitious targets for the growth of its economy and population and high-quality education will be central to achieving these targets," Abdulla Al Karam, Director General, Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), said. According to the news report, well-being became a key focus of school inspections last year, when 29 Indian-curriculum schools received good or improved rankings in the field. In the rankings issued by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, one Indian-curriculum school was rated outstanding, 10 were rated very good, 14 were deemed good and seven were marked as acceptable. Gems Modern Academy is the only Indian school to have been ranked outstanding consistently since 2011. "It's because I think we focus on well-being and have been doing it for a number of years," said Nargish Khambatta, principal of the school, which follows the Indian and the IB curriculum. According to recent official data, 35 per cent of pupils are enrolled at UK schools, 26 per cent at Indian schools and 16 per cent at US curriculum schools in Dubai. Pupils studying in the Emirate's private schools represent 187 nationalities, highlighting Dubai's multicultural society. The Gulf region is home to 215 private schools, offering 18 different curriculum choices.

"Between 2014-15 and 2022-23, the rise of top-end inequality has been particularly pronounced in terms of wealth concentration. "By 2022-23, top 1 per cent income and wealth shares (22.6 per cent and 40.1 per cent) are at their highest historical levels and India's top 1 per cent income share is among the very highest in the world, higher than even South Africa, Brazil, and the US," the paper said. According to the paper, the Indian income tax system might be regressive when viewed from the lens of net wealth. "A restructuring of the tax code to account for both income and wealth, and broad-based public investments in health, education and nutrition are needed to enable the average Indian, and not just the elites, to meaningfully benefit from the ongoing wave of globalisation," it noted. As per the paper, besides serving as a tool to fight inequality, a "super tax" of 2 per cent on the net wealth of the 167 wealthiest families in 2022-23 would yield 0.5 per cent of national income in revenues and create valuable fiscal space to facilitate such investments. The paper said the quality of economic data in India is notably poor and has seen a decline recently. It said India's top 1 per cent population's income share appears to be among the highest in the world "behind only perhaps Peru, Yemen and a couple of other small countries". "In terms of top wealth shares, we see that both with top 10 per cent and top 1 per cent, India comes out in the middle of the pack, with Brazil, and South Africa standing out with their extreme wealth concentration levels (85.6 per cent and 79.7 per cent top 10 per cent shares, respectively)," the paper said.

This leads to the prevailing notion that if you don't enroll your child in the formal school system early, you might miss the window of opportunity to secure a spot in one of the more coveted institutions later.<h2>There's a lot of pressure to get into some schools</h2>School admissions in New Delhi are a high-stakes endeavor, unlike the public-school system I grew up with in the US, where your address mostly dictates which school you attend.The admissions process here is complex and multifaceted, incorporating factors such as proximity to the school and alumni status. But schools also consider things like parents' education levels, giving preference to better-educated parents with the idea that it may signal the family prioritizes education. Even factors like a child's gender are taken into consideration. Historically in India, many families prioritized the education of sons over that of daughters because the sons would continue to care for their parents in old age. Schools, in awarding additional points in admissions consideration to girls, are trying to advocate for girls' education and correct that longstanding gender bias. After students meet these criteria, schools select them through lotteries. The acceptance rates at some of the most sought-after schools are staggeringly low, hovering at around 1%. The pressure on parents to secure their child's admission begins months, if not years, in advance, and this intense competition can be incredibly stressful.<h2>There are more one-day school holidays</h2>I remember growing up with leisurely summer and winter breaks that ranged from three weeks to three months in length. My kids, on the other hand, only enjoy a six-week summer hiatus from mid-May to late June, and a 10-day break in January.However, the Indian school calendar compensates with frequent one-day holidays throughout the year. These single-day "chuttis"— "holidays" in Hindi — encompass an array of religious and public holidays, including Eid, Christmas, Buddha's Birthday, Mahatma Gandhi's birthday, Diwali, various Hindu gods' birthdays, Sikh gurus' birthdays, and national holidays such as Independence Day and Republic Day.<h2>My kids are learning several languages</h2>Most Indian schools adopt a bilingual approach to education. In our case, instructors teach our kids in English, our kids have studied Hindi since kindergarten, and they'll begin learning a third foreign language in the fourth grade. This multilingual approach reflects the diverse linguistic landscape of India and prepares students to communicate effectively in both a country as diverse as India and in the wider world.<h2>There's more emphasis on STEM subjects</h2>Indian schools place significant emphasis on STEM subjects. While they do teach basic grammar, there is often less emphasis on reading full books as part of the curricula.In my children's English textbooks, there are excerpts from works such as "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," "Treasure Island," and "The Jungle Book," but teachers assign few full novels as reading. In contrast, in his environmental-studies class, my fifth grader is delving into topics including human and plant anatomy that I didn't encounter until my freshman year of college in the US. This focus on STEM subjects sometimes comes at the cost of arts and humanities education, requiring parents to supplement their children's learning in these areas outside school.While navigating the Indian education system — and the education system in any country, for that matter — has its own set of challenges, our family has embraced this adventure. The owners of restaurants and bars will be responsible for strict adherence to Covid safety measures and all official guidelines and norms, it said. Public parks, gardens and golf clubs will be reopened and outdoor yoga <keyword id="51986" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Activities">activities</keyword> will also be allowed, the DDMA stated in its order. Prohibited activities and services, including schools, colleges and educational institutions, cinemas, gyms, spas, all kinds of political, social, cultural, religious gatherings among others will remain closed till further orders or 5 am on June 28. "In case, any violation is found, strict penal/criminal action will be taken against the owner of the restaurant or bar," DDMA warned. Delhi government allows reopening of bars, public parks and gardens from Monday

A particularly harsh punishment was doled out to 16 kindergarten students in a private girls' school in <keyword id="66" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi">Delhi</keyword> for not paying the fees. The children were apparently locked up in a dingy basement for five hours. The incident occurred at <keyword id="6698264" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rabea-Girls-Public-School">Rabea Girls’ Public School</keyword> in Delhi’s <keyword id="6359570" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="chandni-chowk">Chandni Chowk</keyword> area on Monday. According to a report in the <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/kids-locked-in-school-basement-principal-booked/articleshow/64937966.cms">Times Of India</a>, when parents of these little girls went to pick them up, they were not in their classroom. Upon inquiry, they were told that they were in the basement and had not been allowed to attend class since they had not paid the fees. The parents rushed to the basement and found the kids locked in a room that had been bolted from the outside. The parents alleged that their daughters were left in the poorly ventilated room that didn’t even have a fan in this blistering Delhi heat for five hours (7.30AM to 12.30PM). Shabeem Hasan, a complainant, also said that a few kids had to be taken to the hospital. The principal, Farah Diba, however, denied the allegation and told <a href="https://www.aninews.in/news/national/general-news/kejriwal-seeks-report-on-school-girls-lock-up-case201807111323160002/">ANI</a> that the room was a “recreation room” and that the fan had gone for repairs that day. She also claimed that the children were kept under the supervision of two teachers. Schools in Haryana’s Gurugram also reopened from October 15 in a graded manner.
