The number of cases of COVID-19's <keyword id="15929505" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="XBB-1-5-variant" source="Orion">XBB.1.5 variant</keyword>, responsible for the rise in cases in the US, has gone up to 26 in India, according to INSACOG data on Monday. The cases of XBB.1.5 variant have been found across 11 states and Union territories till now, including <keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword>, <keyword id="13126" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maharashtra" source="Orion">Maharashtra</keyword> and <keyword id="6357783" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="west-bengal" source="Orion">West Bengal</keyword>, the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) said. The XBB.1.5 strain is a relative of the <keyword id="1609796" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="omicron" source="Orion">Omicron</keyword> XBB variant, which is a recombinant of the Omicron BA.2.10.1 and BA.2.75 subvariants. Combined, XBB and XBB.1.5 make up 44 per cent of cases in the US. The INSACOG data also showed that 14 cases of BF.7 strain which is apparently driving China's COVID-19 wave have been found in India. There are four cases of Omicron sub-variant BF.7 reported in West Bengal, three in Maharashtra, two each in Haryana and Gujarat and one each in Odisha, Delhi and <keyword id="6354780" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="karnataka" source="Orion">Karnataka</keyword>. Covid 19's XBB.1.5 variant cases rise to 26 in India: INSACOG

<ul><li>Adults hospitalised with the <keyword id="1609796" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="omicron" source="Orion">Omicron</keyword> variant have a higher death rate than those hospitalised with seasonal influenza.</li><li>The study by Dr Alaa Atamna and colleagues from the <keyword id="1692349" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rabin-medical-center" source="Orion">Rabin Medical Center</keyword> at <keyword id="17069086" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="belinison-hospital" source="Orion">Belinison Hospital</keyword> in Israel found that adults (18 years or older) hospitalised with influenza were 55 per cent less likely to die within 30 days than those hospitalised with Omicron during the 2021-2022 influenza season.</li><li>Respiratory complications and need for oxygen support and mechanical ventilation were also more common in Omicron cases than in seasonal influenza.</li></ul>New Delhi, Adults hospitalised with the Omicron variant have a higher death rate than those hospitalised with seasonal influenza, even though Omicron is considered less virulent with lower case fatality rates than the Delta and Alpha strains, new research has revealed. The study by Dr Alaa Atamna and colleagues from the Rabin Medical Center at Belinison Hospital in Israel found that adults (18 years or older) hospitalised with influenza were 55 per cent less likely to die within 30 days than those hospitalised with Omicron during the 2021-2022 influenza season. Influenza and Covid-19 are both respiratory diseases with similar modes of transmission. To find out more, researchers compared the clinical outcomes of patients hospitalised with Covid-19 (Omicron variant) and those hospitalised with influenza at a large academic hospital in Israel. Overall, 63 patients died within 30 days -- 19 admitted with influenza and 44 hospitalised with Omicron. Patients with Omicron tended to have higher overall comorbidity scores, needed more assistance performing activities of daily living (washing and dressing), and were more likely to have high blood pressure and diabetes, whereas asthma was more common in those hospitalised with influenza. Respiratory complications and need for oxygen support and mechanical ventilation were also more common in Omicron cases than in seasonal influenza. "A possible reason for the higher Omicron death rate is that patients admitted with Omicron were older with additional major underlying illnesses such as diabetes and chronic kidney disease," said <keyword id="17069085" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="dr-atamna" source="Orion">Dr Atamna</keyword>. The difference might also be due to an exaggerated immune response in Covid-19, and that vaccination against Covid-19 was far lower among patients with Omicron," he added. The double whammy of overlapping influenza and Covid-19 epidemics will increase the complexity of disease and the burden on health systems, said the study to be presented at this year's European Congress of Clinical Microbiology &amp; Infectious Diseases (ECCMID) in Copenhagen this month. Omicron more deadly than seasonal influenza, reveals research

The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on Tuesday decided to impose a weekend curfew in the capital city in the wake of the ongoing Covid-19 resurgence. In a virtual meeting chaired by Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, the Authority suggested for weekend curfew during which no non-essential movement will be allowed. The meeting also discussed imposing more restrictions in the city in an effort to curb the unabated surge. According to the DDMA order, all government offices, except those dealing with essential services, will work from home. A cap of 50 per cent occupancy has been imposed on private offices. On Monday, Delhi reported 4,099 fresh Covid cases, the highest single-day spike after May 18, 2021 when the tally was also 4,482. The new cases have pushed the infection tally to 14,58,220. Meanwhile, an additional Covid fatality has increased the national capital's death toll to 25,110. The Covid infection in the city has climbed to 6.46 per cent, highest in the last seven months. According to the Delhi Health Department, the national capital had recorded 6.89 per cent positivity rate on May 18, 2021. Of the cases being reported in the national capital, 81 per cent are that of the new Omicron variant, Health Minister Satyendra Jain had said in the Legislative Assembly on Monday. The capital has, so far, detected 351 Omicron cases, of which 57 have been discharged from the hospital. Two new <keyword id="13825644" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Omicron-subvariants" source="Orion">Omicron subvariants</keyword> are on the rise in the United States, adding to concern of health experts whether they may fuel a summer surge in COVID-19 cases. The subvariants, known as BA.4 and BA.5, were estimated to make up nearly 13 per cent of all new US COVID-19 cases in the latest week ending June 4, the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Tuesday. BA.4 made up 5.4 per cent of the new cases, while BA.5 made up 7.6 per cent, according to CDC estimates. The two subvariants represented the highest percentage of cases in a region that includes Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana, according to the CDC, Xinhua news agency reported. Another subvariant BA.2.12.1, which remains the dominant variant in the country, made up 62.2 per cent of all new US cases in the past week following months of steady growth. The BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants were added to the <keyword id="43588" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-health-organization" source="Orion">World Health Organization</keyword>'s monitoring list in March and designated as variants of concern by the <keyword id="668044" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="European-Centre-for-Disease-Prevention-and-Control" source="Orion">European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control</keyword>. CDC data showed they were present in all US regions. Evidence suggests the new subvariants are yet-more contagious versions of <keyword id="1609796" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="omicron" source="Orion">Omicron</keyword>, which may be able to dodge antibodies from earlier infection well enough to trigger a new wave, health experts said. "BA.4 and 5 may end up becoming the dominant Omicron lineages in the coming weeks or months," said Nathan Grubaugh, an associate professor of epidemiology at Yale University's School of Public Health. The United States is currently averaging about 108,000 COVID-19 cases and 300 deaths each day, the latest CDC data showed. Health experts believe the real number is significantly higher as increasing at-home testing results had not been tracked. Some epidemiologists warned surging cases may put people with compromised health at risk and can also expose many infected people to long-term health problems. New Omicron subvariants on the rise in the US

<ul><li>The financial capital city of India recorded four cases of <keyword id="13782418" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="omicron-ba-4" source="Orion">Omicron BA.4</keyword> and BA.5 subvariants.</li><li>All the four patients were under home-isolation and have recovered from the infection.</li><li>BA.4 and BA.5 sub variants of Omicron are highly transmissible, first detected in South Africa earlier this year.</li></ul>Maharashtra’s capital city reported three BA.4 and one BA.5 cases of Omicron sub variant. However, all the four patients have fully recovered, said the Maharashtra Health Department on June 13. Out of the four patients, two are 11-year-old girls, who are yet not eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine yet. The other two are men aged between 40-60 years. As per report, all the four cases were found between May 14 - 24 and were under home isolation. These two sub variants — BA.4 and BA.5 — are highly transmissible strains of Omicron which have already spread across 42 and 47 countries so far, respectively. The first case was detected in South Africa in the beginning of 2022. BA.4 and BA.5 are not new viruses and no severe cases of hospitalization have been reported in patients with these sub variants in any of the countries where the cases are surging. “Basically, Omicron took off from one branch of the genomic tree and these are the smaller branches of Omicron itself so they are not new viruses. We know that this virus is continuously adapting to the human host in order to escape our immunity and also to travel faster between people,” Dr Jayadevan, Indian Medical Association's national task force's co-chairman, told news agency ANI. As these are the sub variants of Omicron, no new symptoms are to be seen in these strains. Experts suggest that detection of new sub variants and rising cases in the country doesn’t necessarily mean a new wave or the fourth wave is afoot. Active cases in Maharashtra jumped by almost 241% from over 5,000 to 17,000 in the last ten days. According to the health department data, Maharashtra recorded 9,354 COVID-19 cases in May, out of which 5,980 were reported from Mumbai. Amid the surge in COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra, doctors and medical experts say that most of the patients are showing <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/maharashtra-active-covid-cases-jump-241-from-5-127-to-17-480-in-10-days-3063205">milder symptoms</a> and the rate of fatality is quite low as compared to the other waves. Union Health Minister Mandukh Mandaviya also asked the people to remain vigilant and keep following COVID measures as the pandemic is not yet over in the country. The list further ranks Great Britain with 6% cases, followed by India (5%), Sweden (2%), and Singapore (2%). “In India we are already seeing this substrain in our genomic testing. The symptoms and treatment are the same as other substrains, like BA.1.
