<ul><li>Yesterday, the central government issued orders for the transfer <keyword id="104347" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="justice-S-Muralidhar">Justice S Muralidhar</keyword> from the Delhi High Court to the Punjab and Haryana High Court.</li><li>The timing of the transfer has sparked controversy, which came in mere hours of Muralidhar addressing the issue of FIRs being filed against right-wing leaders for delivering hate speeches.</li><li>He has been practising the law for 36 years, either as a lawyer or a judge, in addition to having a doctorate and publishing a book.</li></ul>Today is the last working day for Justice S Muralidhar as a judge at the Delhi High Court. Last night, the central government sent a notification for his transfer to the Punjab and Haryana High Court despite protests from the Delhi High Court Bar Association. “Your lordship has been an inspiration to the entire young bar. We hope we can live up to your example,” a young lawyer told Justice Muralidhar, according to <a href="https://www.livelaw.in/top-stories/you-are-an-inspiration-young-lawyers-tell-justice-muralidhar-on-his-last-day-as-delhi-hc-judge-153193">LiveLaw.</a> Even though the transfer has been recommended by the Supreme Court on February 12, the timing of the government’s orders has sparked controversy. It came in mere hours after Muralidhar <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india/news/indias-second-highest-ranking-law-officer-sees-no-urgency-in-a-case-on-delhi-violence/articleshow/74318695.cms">went up against Solicitor General Tushar Mehta</a> in a plea filed by social activist Harsh Mander.

 “We can’t let another 1984 scenario happen in this city, not under the watch of this court,” he said. Muralidhar also directed the Delhi police to decide on the matter of filing FIRs with respect to hate speeches made by right-wing politicians. Muralidhar also came to the rescue of victims of the <keyword id="4930213" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Violence">Delhi violence</keyword>, the night before. During a midnight hearing, he issued directions to the Delhi Police to ensure that all injured people are granted safe passage to medical institutions and hospitals. Over three decades of courtroom drama Muralidhar has been practising law for over three decades. Starting off in September 1984 in Chennai, in three years he started to practice at the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court. As an advocate, he worked on some notable cases — like addressing victims of the Bhopal Gas tragedy and arguing on behalf of the people displaced by the Narmada Dam project. In time he also served as counsel for the National Human Right Commission and the Election Commission of India. He was also awarded his Ph D by Delhi University in 2003. It was only 2006 that he was appointed as a judge at the Delhi court. Set to change things from the get-go, he refused to be addressed at ‘Your Lordship’ by lawyers. Furthermore, he was a part of the bench that ruled in favour of disclosing how many Supreme Court judges had declared their assets in response to an RTI. Over the years, he delivered a number of impactful judgements. In 2009, he was a part of the bench which initially repealed section 377, legalising homosexuality. He also convicted politician Sajjan Kumar for his involvement in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and revoked the transit demand of activist Gautam Navlakha in the Bhima Koregaon case. He’s also an author. He wrote the book Law, Poverty and Legal Aid: Access to Criminal Justice which was published in August 2004. Justice S Muralidhar who refused to be called ‘Your Lordship’ — was also a part of the bench that repealed Section 377

 <keyword id="6355014" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-High-Court">Delhi High Court</keyword> has just redefined women’s footwear to demonstrate customs duty. In the context, a woman's footwear without a back strap is a sandal and that with is a chappal, ruled the court. 
 
The order came to the light while discussing custom duty levied on exports of chappals and sandals. What’s weird is not the court’s definition, rather a government order that says export of sandals would attract 10% custom duty while chappals will attract 5%. 
 
The government had withdrawn a 10 per cent duty drawback given to a footwear manufacturer saying the footwear exported by it were 'chappals' as these did not have back strap. The Delhi High Court, while ruling that these were sandals, quashed the government's decision. Disagreeing with the government's view, a bench of justices S <keyword id="211436" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ravindra-Bhat">Ravindra Bhat</keyword> and <keyword id="262620" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Najmi-Waziri">Najmi Waziri</keyword> ruled, "The respondents (Centre and the <keyword id="6371460" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="revenue-department">Revenue Department</keyword>), in our opinion, acted upon prejudice and a preconceived notion that ladies sandals cannot be without a back strap". 
It said in view of the totality of circumstances, "this court is of the opinion that the impugned orders, upholding duty drawback withdrawal and imposing penalty cannot be sustained. They are hereby quashed". 
 The court said that an expert body, <keyword id="532055" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Council-of-Leather-Exports">Council of Leather Exports</keyword> which routinely dealt with such issues in context of export, had, based on evidence and instructions of government, furnished an opinion that goods were sandals and not chappals. 
 The court's order came on a plea by Chennai-based footwear manufacturer, <keyword id="4116441" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="wishall-international">Wishall International</keyword>, challenging the government's position that a woman's footwear without a back strap was a chappal and not a sandal. 
 The firm in May 2003 had filed a shipping bill to export the consignment declared as "ladies leather sandals" claiming 10 per cent customs duty drawback. The <keyword id="55109" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Customs-department">Customs Department</keyword> here, however, had said the export consignment were chappals. 
 
The company, however, had sought opinion from the Council of Leather Exports which had cleared the export consignment as sandals.

In April this year, Grover had threatened legal action against CEO Sameer and the board for his comments on professional networking platform LinkedIn against his sister Ashima Grover, along with seeking a resignation from Chairman Rajnish Kumar. Grover last week attacked the fintech platform's co-founder Shashvat Nakrani, saying he once asked him to bunk office for a whole year in order to complete his IIT degree while remaining on the payroll. He also alleged that his book "Doglapan" created panic among BharatPe executives and this is the reason the fintech company had apparently filed cases against him. BharatPe CEO enjoying life with money I raised but fails to grow company, says Ashneer Grover

New Delhi, Jan 9 () The farm policies need to be reoriented to first ensure income security to farmers and later make them businessmen, a senior agriculture ministry official said on Thursday.
"Now, we are thinking to secure the community which has made our country food secure. We must emphasise on income security of farmer friends. Unless they are secured our aim of food and nutrition security, feed and fodder security and ecology security will not be fulfilled," said Ashok Dalwai, chairman of hight-level panel on doubling farmers income.
Dalwai, who is also CEO of the National Rainfed Area Authority (NRAA), has recommended several policy measures to improve the income of farmers.
Speaking at an event organised by agro-chemicals firm Dhanuka Agritech Ltd, Dalwai said India has the capacity to improve the income of farmers.
"All our knowledge, science, policies need to be reoriented to benefit them. ...After income security, our next step would be to make farmers businessmen who works for profit which will be done though policy and other changes," he said.
Dalwai also mentioned that the green revolution must not be perceived negatively and at the same time there is a need to learn lessons from the milk revolution.
On the occasion, Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Minister of State for Agriculture Kailash Choudhary gave away the first edition of Dhanuka Innovative Agriculture Award (DIAA) with cash amount totalling Rs 22 lakh to 32 farmers in various categories for adopting and practising innovative farming techniques.
Dhanuka Agritech Chairman R G Agarwal said the awards have been instituted to felicitate the innovative farming community and encourage farmers to share their practices to enhance crop productivity and their income. LUX BAL
