New Delhi, Dec 4 () India needs to reform its tariff regime to reduce dependence on discoms and bring new electricity procurement models to boost consumption of renewables by commercial and industrial (C&amp;I) consumers, according to an industry expert.
 As per a report by WWF-India, C&amp;I consumers account for 51 per cent of the total electricity consumption in India, which is equivalent to 1,130 TWh per annum.
 "Concerted government action is required to grow penetration of renewable power for these consumers. There are two broad areas of action required. First, we need tariff reform to reduce financial dependence of discoms on C&amp;I consumers. Second, new procurement models need to be enabled," said Bridge to India MD Vinay Rustagi at a CII event here.
 WWF-India report 'Global Corporate Renewable Power Procurement Models: Lessons for India' was also released at the event.
 According to the report, C&amp;I consumers' power demand is met principally by grid power (63 per cent) and onsite captive generation (27 per cent, mostly coal fired).
 Only 4 per cent is met by long-term open access (OA) sources. C&amp;I consumers' share of direct RE (renewable energy) procurement including rooftop solar is estimated at only 3.2 per cent for fiscal 2018.
 However, this 3.2 per cent procurement of clean energy excludes combined supply of renewable and conventional power by discoms.
 Many corporates have been proactive and announced voluntary carbon mitigation targets, along with increasing their renewable power consumption, Ravi Singh, Secretary General and CEO, WWF-India said.
 "Consumption of renewable power cannot only make C&amp;I consumers cost competitive and spur macro-economic growth, but also play a significant role in reducing India's carbon emissions," Singh said.
 As part of a stronger Climate Action Plan, India has committed to increase renewable power capacity target from 175 GW in 2022 to 450 GW by 2030.
 Greater adoption of clean energy by C&amp;I consumers is critical for meeting these national renewable energy and climate change commitments.
 The report also said captive coal-fired capacity in the country is estimated at 52,933 MW and combined share of renewable power in their consumption mix is likely to be only 10.5 per cent.
 With renewable power costs falling rapidly, C&amp;I consumers have a very strong financial incentive to switch to clean energy. They can not only make attractive savings of around 30-60 per cent on grid power, but also reduce carbon emissions and comply with renewable purchase obligations, the report suggests.
 Currently, the avenues available to C&amp;I consumers to procure renewable power are limited to rooftop solar installations, open access solar and wind power, and RECs (renewable energy certificates).
 However, even these options are not freely available because of various policy and market constraints.
 With the growing C&amp;I renewable power market worldwide, many new alternative procurement options have opened up. Virtual power purchase agreements, green tariffs, internationally tradable RECs (I-RECs) have already been successfully tried and tested in many countries.
 There are also proposals to set up dedicated renewable power exchanges and facilitate peer-to-peer (P2P) trading, the report added. KKS ANU

New Delhi, Apr 1 () India's power consumption fell 9.24 per cent to 100.13 billion units in March compared to 110.32 billion units in the year-ago period mainly on account of lower commercial and industrial demand due to the lockdown imposed to fight COVID-19. According to the National Load Dispatch Centre Data, the energy consumption stood at 100.13 billion units (BU) in March as compared to 110.32 BU a year ago. The data also showed that during March 22-31, the power demand remained quite low as compared to March 1-21 period. In view of the COVID-19 outbreak, the government has imposed lockdown for three weeks from March 25. India's peak power demand (met) was recorded at 170.17 GW on March 3 during the three-week period (till March 21) without COVID-19 impact on consumption. During the remaining ten days of the month, the peak power demand was 145.49 GW on March 23. Therefore, the data suggests that the peak power demand met fell by about 25GW or 17 per cent. However, during the last ten days of March, the peak power demand was also at a level of 115.23 GW on March 27. During the first three weeks of the month, the peak power demand met hovered at around 160GW. The peak power demand met is the actual highest energy supply during the day across the country. The spot power price touched a three-year low of 60 paise per unit for supplies on last Wednesday (March 25) on the Indian Energy Exchange due to low demand.The average spot power price is hovering around Rs 2 per unit at electricity exchanges. By K K Shankar New Delhi, May 4 () Power consumption in April dipped 22.75 per cent to 85.05 billion units (BU) compared to 110.11 BU in the same month a year ago, mainly due to low demand amid the lockdown to combat COVID-19.The government had imposed lockdown from April 25 to fight the deadly coronavirus in the country. This resulted in lower commercial and industrial demand in April.According to power ministry data, the total electricity consumption was 85.05 billion units in April this year.The data showed that India's power consumption was 110.11 BU in the corresponding month last year.The peak power demand met in April stood at 132.77 GW, almost one-fourth less than 176.81 GW in the same month a year earlier.The peak power demand met is the highest energy supply during the day across the country.Besides, lower commercial and industrial demand, the relatively cool weather during April this year played spoil sport. The temperature remained below 40 degree celsius even in the second half of the month.The cool weather kept the power demand low despite partial easing of the lockdown from April 20. The government had allowed certain economic activities, particularly in rural area and non-containment zones.In April, the peak power demand met crossed the 130 GW mark on April 24 (130.02GW), April 29 (131.13GW) and April 30 (132.77GW), the NLDC data showed.The power demand during April ranged between 116.89 GW (April 8) to 132.77 GW (April 30).An industry expert expressed hope about rise in power demand in coming days, with more relaxations in place from Monday onwards for economic activities across the country and expected rise in temperature in May.However, they are of the view that it would take time to attain power demand levels of last year. Lockdown pulls down power consumption by 22.75 pc to 85.05 BU in Apr

Tata Power consumers in Delhi will soon be able to know about their daily electricity consumption and access various other details like reasons for technical fault in transmission line with the company working on a Rs 100-crore project to introduce "new-age" technology. 
 
Under the first of its kind initiative in the country, domestic consumers of Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (TPDDL), will be no longer required to report to the company about snapping of electricity supplies as real time monitoring of power transmission to each and every consumer will be ensured through a communication network, currently used by very few countries. 
 
TPDDL CEO and Managing Director Praveer Sinha said consumers, by using an app in their smart phones, will be able to access a host of information such as consumption during peak and off-peak hours, details of consumption for any period in the current fiscal compared to same period a year ago etc. 
 
He said technology for the ambitious smart metering and communication network project is being sourced from across the globe and a number of leading companies like General Electricals, IBM have been roped in. 
 
"It will totally be a whole new experience for our consumers in Delhi. Such an ambitious project is being implemented for the first time in the country. 
 
"We are planning to cover 2.5 lakh consumers by April 2018 under the project which will be rolled out in early next year," Sinha told PTI. 
 
He said TPDDL is also augmenting its infrastructure for introduction of the Time of Day metering (TOD), which involves dividing the day, month and year into tariff slots and with higher rates at peak load periods and low tariff rates at off-peak load periods. 
 
Delhi's power regulator DERC has planned to introduce TOD, a concept borrowed from European countries, under which price of power is much lower in off-peak hours of the day compared to peak hours of 7 to 10 PM. 
 
"We are working on technology through which consumers will be able to control power consumption through smart metering. 
 
"For example, if a consumer wants to run washing machine during off peak hours always or if somebody wants to use other appliances during a specific period of time, they will have the option," he said Sinha. 
 
He said under the smart metering project, TPDDL will be able to know about consumption of power by consumers every half an hour and can share the information with them. 
 
The TPDDL has a consumer base of 15.5 lakh which includes consumers in the commercial category. 
 
The immediate plan of the company is to cover 7.5 lakh consumers under the project. 
 
"We are going to invest over Rs 100 crore in modernizing the communication network. 
 
"Already a global tender has been floated for the project," said Sinha, adding smart metering will also significantly help the company root out power theft and other leakages.

It does chew it up because AC uses quite a bit of power. And, we use solar panel technology on the roof of our car to address that issue. I just think that you know a lot of those guys are not considering those things,” Patel said. Triton is looking to invest around $650 million to $1 billion in setting up a manufacturing facility in India. The company is also in final stage discussion with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to assist it in the manufacturing for its battery, as well as our electronic components. The company is also in talks with different state authorities to set up its facility in India. However, the CEO declined to name those. The company is looking to start manufacturing its first vehicle in 3-6 months from now and aims to roll out the first car by the end of this year. The promise of long battery life He further explained that the solar panel in their car could generate up to 1.3 kilowatts per hour, reducing the AC from 3 KW draw to 1.3 KW draw. “This offsets the losses of mileage or kilometers in India. By just doing this, we’re saving about close to 30% of the battery for being used during traffic times.” The use of solar panels is not new to the EV industry, but it would be new for India. The Korean carmaker Hyundai has also used similar solar roofs in its Sonata Hybrid, which is <a href="https://www.zigwheels.com/newcars/Hyundai/sonata">expected </a>to launch in February this year in India. Although the solar panel will reduce the battery’s load, it wouldn’t be enough for the car to operate on the solar panels alone. And, that is the pain point for the EV makers. As of the latest data, India had <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/opinion/panorama/india-s-ev-conundrum-incentives-in-place-but-no-infrastructure-933477.html">650 places</a> where people could charge the EVs. However, Patel revealed that they are in talks with many dealerships in major cities and other cities to set up their dealer facility to carry their EV fast chargers. “And basically you know what our goal is to not only have multiple dealership outlets, but also, have satellite dealership outlets. So the satellite dealership outlets means that you have less infrastructure, but you have charging stations. We feel this is gonna be a very good starting point to get people to be able to get fast charging from ourselves as far as our building goals,” he said. Meanwhile, the company is also tying up with other charging companies in India cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Gujarat, Hyderabad and Karnataka.  As per a recent report published in Economic Times, the General Administration Department of <keyword id="6354952" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Government">Delhi Government</keyword> has furnished the copies of electricity bill of Kejriwal's house in the <keyword id="6356198" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="RTI">RTI</keyword> query that was filed by Vivek Garg, an advocate and RTI activist. 
 However, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Delhi officials are claiming that the bill was over Rs 1 lakh. Not just this, but Delhi BJP has also said that it will seek power bill details of all <keyword id="6356115" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="AAP">AAP</keyword> ministers. 
 
Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Kapoor also alleged that the CM house is equipped with two different electricity meters. In a statement he said, "The Chief Minister's residence has two electricity meters. The latest bills for the two meters are Rs 55,000 and Rs 48,000 (total Rs 1, 03,000)." 
 
According to a senior official, the government will verify the bill before commenting on the matter.

NEW DELHI: <keyword id="6354944" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Aam-Aadmi-Party">Aam Aadmi Party</keyword>’s expelled MLA Vinod Kumar Binny on Sunday produced the most potent threat yet to the month-old <keyword id="6495972" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Kejriwal-government">Kejriwal government</keyword>, when he teamed up with two legislators and said they would withdraw support if the regime did not fulfill its promises in the next 48 hours on slashing power and water bills, women’s security and a fair probe into the 2010 Commonwealth Games scams. 
 
The rebel Laxmi Nagar MLA shared the podium with veteran Janata Dal (United) MLA Shoaib Iqbal and Independent Rambeer Shokeen, both of whom had voted for the government in the assembly. 
 <keyword id="6356115" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="AAP">AAP</keyword> has 27 MLAs after Binny’s expulsion and runs the government with outside support from eight <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> legislators. If the trio were to vote against the government, it faces the prospect of slipping below the majority mark of 36 in the 70-member House. Binny also claimed to have the support of other two MLAs. 
 
Iqbal, who in past had expressed a desire to join AAP, claimed that the party was losing popularity. "People are no more with the AAP government as it has completely failed to deliver its promises," he said, hinting that he may form a new party. The rebels, when asked to identify the other dissidents, said they would hold another press conference on Monday to announce the names. 
 
"We are not interested in bringing down the government. But we want the government to fulfill its promises. We are giving them 48 hours to deliver. The next course of action will be decided later," he said. Binny had earlier accused AAP of deviating from its poll promises, triggering an ugly bickering in the party. He was sacked earlier this month. 
 
In the list of Binny’s demands were a reversal of the hike in surcharge on power, making water consumption up to 700 litres a day free without any riders, a probe into the Commonwealth Games and effective measures for women’s security. 
 After coming to power, AAP had said water up to 20 kilolitre water per month (approximately 666 litres per day) will be free for consumers with functional meters. The government also slashed electricity tariffs by 50% for households that consumed up to 400 units a month. The <keyword id="6379315" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Delhi-Electricity-Regulatory-Commission">Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission</keyword> last Friday approved a hike in the power purchase cost adjustment surcharge, as sought by the city’s private distribution companies.
