Today is <keyword id="22458495" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="July-31st" source="keywords">July 31st</keyword>, 2024, the last day to file your income tax returns, without having to pay any penalties. And before you ask, the <keyword id="19903456" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="income-tax-department" source="keywords">Income Tax Department</keyword> has not come out with any notification informing the taxpayers of a deadline extension. That is why you should not delay filing your <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/personal-finance/article/heres-your-ready-reckoner-for-itr-filing/articleshow/111402608.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">income tax returns</a> anymore! The <keyword id="20171597" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT-department" source="keywords">IT department</keyword> noted that as of July 26th, 2024, over 5 crore ITRs had already been filed, marking an 8.5% increase from the number of ITRs filed during this period, last year. The IT department, in an X post, highlighted that last year, it had reached the 5-crore <keyword id="22083160" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ITR-filing-deadline" source="keywords">ITR filing deadline</keyword> on July 27th. However, this year, it had breached the milestone a day earlier, i.e., on July 26th, 2024. Earlier, the All Gujarat Federation of Tax Consultants and Income Tax Bar Association had requested a deadline extension for AY 2024–25 from July 31st, 2024, to August 31st, 2024, citing issues and glitches in the tax filing portal. However, there has been no response from the finance ministry on the same. <h2>What happens if I don't file my ITR until July 31st? </h2>For AY 2024–25, you can file a <keyword id="6380232" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="belated-ITR" source="Orion">belated ITR</keyword> until December 31st, 2024. But remember, it comes with many disadvantages as well. Here's a snapshot of all the benefits you will have to forego: <h2>What are the penalties for late filing of ITR? </h2>1. You will have to pay a penalty of Rs. 1,000 if your total annual taxable income is below Rs 5,00,000. But if your taxable income exceeds this threshold, you will have to pay a penalty of Rs 5,000. 2. Even if you have to file a <keyword id="17933087" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NIL-ITR" source="Orion">nil ITR</keyword>, you must do so before July 31st. This is because if you do not end up filing it on time, you will have to pay a fine of Rs 1,000. 3. According to Section 234A of the <keyword id="19936187" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="income-tax-act" source="keywords">Income Tax Act</keyword>, you will also have to pay interest on your outstanding tax amount at the rate of 1% per month, starting from the due date, i.e., July 31st. <h2>No carry forward of losses, old tax regime</h2>1. You will not be able to carry forward any losses, including those from your mutual funds or stock investments, business income, and other sources. You will only be allowed to carry forward your losses from house properties. This could significantly raise your total tax liability and lead to you incurring hefty losses. 2. After July 31st, 2024, you will not be able to opt for the old tax regime for tax calculation purposes. Starting August 1, the new tax regime, which offers significantly fewer deductions and exemptions as compared to the old regime, will be considered default for you. ITR Filing: Today is the last day to file your income tax returns, so file today to avoid penalties

The <keyword id="21180338" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="tax-filing-season" source="keywords">tax filing season</keyword> is knocking at our doors, and you have until July 31 to answer it without paying any penalties. But are you confused as to where to start? Does the stack of documents needed to file your <keyword id="19897621" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ITR" source="keywords">ITR</keyword> seem too long? Well, we’ve got you covered. But first off, why do you even need to file an ITR? Simply put, if your <keyword id="21120362" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="annual-income" source="keywords">annual income</keyword> is more than Rs 2.5 lakh (if you opt for the old tax regime) or Rs 3 lakh (if you opt for the new tax regime), you are liable to pay taxes and, hence, file an ITR. If you delay filing your ITR, or file it between August 1 and December 31st, you'll have to pay a fine of Rs 5,000. If your annual income is below Rs 5 lakh, then you'll be fined Rs 1,000 for late filing. But in certain cases, you will also have to file an ITR for the financial year, even if your annual taxable income is below the exemption limit : <ul><li>Deposited more than Rs 50 lakh in a savings bank account</li><li>Spent more than Rs 2 lakh on foreign travel</li><li>Incurred expenses of more than Rs 1 lakh in electricity bills</li><li>If your TDS/TCS deducted is more than Rs 25,000 </li></ul>If you’re a <keyword id="22247326" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="salaried-employee" source="keywords">salaried employee</keyword>, here’s a handy list of documents you should collect beforehand before you sit down to file your taxes so that you don't have to scramble for them at the last minute. Firstly, there are your regular documents like PAN and Aadhar card. Also, keep all details of the bank account where you want your IT refund to be credited handy. It is advisable to also have your Annual Income Statement (AIS) ready, so that you can cross-verify and match all your income details while filing your ITR. AIS as a consolidated financial summary of your year <h2>Time to get in <keyword id="22247325" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Form-16" source="keywords">form-16</keyword></h2>Up next is Form-16. This gives you a complete overview of your total earned salary and the TDS deducted. This is issued by the employer to their employee. So, if you have switched jobs during the year, or worked with one or more organizations, you'll have to ask both your current and former employer for Form-16. Additionally, along with Form-16, you should also ask your previous employer to give you a statement of full and final settlement. Generally, form-16 has two parts-A and B. While part-A carries details of the employer and a summary of salary payments made during the year, part-B is where you will find your salary breakup, and the deductions made from your salary, which include payment of life and health insurance premiums, contributions made to pension fund and more.<h2>Keep rent, travel proofs handy while filing ITR </h2>In case you are claiming tax deductions under HRA (house rent agreement), you will need a notarized rent agreement as proof of rent payment. Generally, rent agreements are made for a period of 11 months. Next, in case you have availed LTA (leave travel allowance), you should have all travel-related bills handy. You can claim tax exemption on LTA in two ways. One, you can claim exemption on the amount you've actually spent on your travel. Otherwise, within a 4-year time block (2022-2025), you can claim exemption for a maximum of 2 vacations. This is applicable only for domestic travel, and you can claim exemption for your immediate family members as well. But remember, LTA will not cover your accommodation or food-related expenses incurred on the trip. Up next are your investment proofs and capital gains statement. If you've paid premiums for a life or health insurance policy during the year, or invested in ELSS (equity-linked savings scheme), you need to furnish proofs for the same. You can claim an annual <keyword id="20265008" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tax-deduction" source="keywords">tax deduction</keyword> of up to Rs 25,000 on premiums paid towards your health insurance policy. In fact, your insurance company will send you a certificate to that effect as well. As for ELSS, you can claim an annual tax deduction of up to Rs 1,50,000. But you cannot withdraw money from ELSS before 3 years, so invest carefully. <h2> Pay attention to capital gains while filing ITR</h2>If you've redeemed, or sold some of your investments (property, stocks, mutual funds) during the year and earned profit on them, you'll have to pay <keyword id="20301441" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="capital-gains-tax" source="keywords">capital gains tax</keyword>. But this is applicable only if your capital gains are over Rs 1,00,000 in one financial year. If you sold a share/mutual fund unit within 12 months of buying it, you'll have to pay a 15% short term capital gains tax. And if you redeemed an investment after 12 months, you'll be charged 10% long term capital gains tax. That is why it would help to have a capital gains statement handy, which will help you understand how much tax you have to pay.

ITR filing: Documents you need to file your income tax return

Taxpayers in India were required to file their income tax returns (<keyword id="6374875" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="itr" source="Orion">ITR</keyword>s) for the financial year 2021-2022 (assessment year or AY:2022-2023) by July 31, 2022. While there were a few extensions of the ITR filing deadline over the past few years due to Covid-19 pandemic, Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj said earlier in July that the government had no plans to extend the July 31 deadline. Throughout the month of July 2022, the Income Tax Department has been sending reminders urging the taxpayers to file their ITR before the deadline and not to wait till the last date to avoid the heavy rush on the ITR filing portal. The Income Tax Department’s Twitter account said on July 31, that till 1 pm on the day, 19,53,581 ITRs were filed – of which 4,67,902 were filed during the last one hour. As of July 30, over 5.10 crore ITRs were filed. More than 57.51 lakh ITRs were filed on July 30 alone. During each assessment year, the government gives a four-month window to the taxpayers to consolidate their income details for the given financial year before filing their ITR. This four-month period begins on April 1 and ends on July 31, provided there has not been any extension in the said year. ITR filing has now been simplified to such an extent that it takes only a few minutes to file, thanks to the features provided on the ITR filing portal. Not filing the ITR before the deadline will invite some fines, penalties and consequences, which we will discuss here. Section 234F of the Income Tax Act says that late filing of income tax returns after the due date of July 31 will invite a late fee of ₹5,000 if your annual income is above ₹5 lakh, provided you file your ITR by December 31 of the same assessment year. This late fee fine can go up to ₹10,000 if you file your ITR after December 31 but before March 31, 2023. Section 234F also says that individuals who have not filed their ITR before March 31 will be liable to a late fee of ₹1,000, if the income slab is below ₹5 lakh. The late fee remains unchanged even if the filing is made before December 31 of this year. Section 234A of the Income Tax Act says that if a person has not filed the ITR before the due date and if there is an outstanding tax to be paid, then the amount outstanding will be charged at 1% per month from the due date prescribed. If an individual with a taxable income has not filed the ITR or if the income is understated in the returns, he or she is liable to pay a fine of 50% of the total tax that is applicable on the income for which return was not furnished. With a late fee, you can file your ITR for FY2021-22 (AY 2022-23) till March 31, 2023. If you have missed out <keyword id="3524456" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="filing-itr" source="Orion">filing ITR</keyword> within this deadline, you need to apply for condonation of delay and then file the ITR online. Condonation of delay can be applied for through the e-filing portal of the Income Tax Department. Follow the steps below to do this. <ul><li>Log in to your account on the IT e-filing website. </li><li>Scroll the mouse on the ‘Services’ tab and click on ‘Condonation Request’. </li><li>Select the option, ‘Allow ITR filing after time barred’. Click on the ‘Continue’ button. </li><li>On the next page, click on ‘Create Condonation Request’. </li><li>Fill in all the columns with the relevant details. After uploading the ITR, click on ‘Submit’. </li></ul>Once you have submitted the ITR successfully, choose the option, ‘e-verify’. Once the condonation request is approved, the ITR will be processed. You can also track the status of the condonation request you have sent. Alternatively, you may also find out who is your assessing officer to submit a condonation of delay request letter in person and then do the ITR filing online. Refund Filing ITR on time is essential if you want to claim an income tax refund from the IT department; if you have made foreign asset investments during the financial year; if you want to apply for a loan or visa; or if you are an entity making either profit or loss. Since late filing of ITR can invite a number of consequences you will want to avoid, it is necessary that you keep track of the ITR filing deadline year on year and file the ITR on time. Missed filing your tax returns? Here’s what you pay in late fee & penalties

If you were worried about having to pay a penalty for delayed filing of your <keyword id="104359" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="income-tax-return">income tax return</keyword>, relax! The said fee, which was announced by the government during the budget session this year, would be applicable with effect from April 1, 2018. Hence, it would not be applied for returns filed for FY2016-17. The penalty is based on the time period of delay, i.e., if returns are filed after the due date but before the calendar year ends, the penalty would be Rs 5,000, and in case the return is not filed by December 31st, the penalty would be Rs 10,000. However, for individuals earning not more than Rs 5 lakh, the penalty would not cross Rs. 1000.

You would be fined for delayed ITR, but not this year

As per the regulations put in place by the Income Tax Department, individuals are expected to file Income Tax Returns (ITR) on or before July 31 of every financial year. For example, if you are filing the income tax returns of Financial Year 2018-19 which ends on March 31, 2019, you must do the filing on or before July 31, 2019. Here we discuss how to file income tax returns for the previous years if you have missed them out. Filing <keyword id="104359" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="income-tax-return">income tax return</keyword> for the previous years As per the Finance Act amendment 2016, it is possible to file the delayed IT returns any time before 1 year after the corresponding assessment year has ended. What to do if you get a late payment notice? If the income tax department sends you a late payment notice directing you to tile the returns that stretch beyond 2 financial years in the past, you can prepare your tax returns accordingly and submit it to the department. Taxpayers are expected to file old returns when they get an IT notice. Starting from AY 2018-19, the time limit allowed for filing a revised IT return has been reduced. If you need to make some changes in the original like rectifying the omission or correcting the errors, you must do so before the end of the corresponding AY. Till AY 2017-18, the time limit of 1 year was allowed for filing a revised return from the end of the corresponding AY. What are the negative sides of filing belated IT returns? When you file IT returns late, you are supposed to pay the interest as per the sections 234A, 234B and 234C. If the It returns are filed on or before 31 March of the corresponding AY, a fee of Rs 5,000 will be charged under Section 234F. After this date, the fine will go up to Rs 10,000. How to file the missed returns? The Finance Act 2016 amendment has created provisions to file the IT returns once the taxpayer has missed out the due date. Filing the missed returns in allowed only in some specific cases. Requests for filing income tax returns for the previous years are accepted if the IT department finds that your case is genuine, based on some real difficulties, a refund is due on account of excess tax deduction or TDS or advance tax or self-assessment tax. Delayed IT returns can be filed for the previous years within a period of six years from the end of the assessment year. For example, if you have missed it out, you can file the IT returns of March 31, 2019 up to March 31, 2024.
