<p><strong></strong></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>I've <a href="https://www.insider.com/first-las-vegas-trip-where-to-eat-best-restaurants-2022-11">visited Las Vegas over 50 times</a> and stayed in most resorts, so I have tips for booking stays.</li><li>Stay near where most of your activities are taking place — and look for hotels with a good pool.</li></ul><p>I take the <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-i-dont-recommend-doing-las-vegas-from-repeat-visitor-2023-6">planning of our Vegas trips</a> very seriously.</p><p>After decades of visiting Sin City and over 50 trips, I've learned that the first — and most important — step is booking our room. I want the best location, <a href="https://www.insider.com/las-vegas-private-dining-in-botanical-garden-bellagio-conservatory-photos-2023-7">great dining</a>, a fabulous pool, and the cheapest possible price.</p><p>So, after much experience and some <a href="https://www.insider.com/las-vegas-things-you-should-never-do-during-first-visit-2022-8">big travel mistakes</a>, here's everything I take into consideration when I book a hotel in Vegas.</p><h2><strong>Consider what your itinerary looks like before choosing a hotel </strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Mad Apple show at New York New York hotel with purple and blue lights throughout" height="1512" width="2016" msid="104857450" hostid="261" sizebytes="139596"></div><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/what-to-do-in-las-vegas-nevada-besides-the-strip-2022-10">Vegas is a world-class entertainment destination</a> featuring hundreds of shows, concerts, and sporting events. After deciding what we'll be doing in Vegas, I then select a hotel nearby.</p><p>During our last trip, we enjoyed the new Cirque du Soleil show at New York-New York hotel. When the show was over, we walked 10 minutes back to our hotel room at the NoMad. We avoided the hassle of waiting for an Uber and saved a few bucks as well.  </p><p>If you're attending a hockey game at T-Mobile Arena, you'll be within walking distance of hotels New York-New York and the Park MGM. Raiders fans can exit Allegiant Stadium and quickly enter either Mandalay Bay or Delano hotel.</p><p>Nothing can ruin a good evening like sitting in traffic, so take a few minutes to find and <a href="https://www.insider.com/tried-to-save-money-staying-outside-major-city-ruined-trip-venice-italy">book the most conveniently located hotel</a>.</p><h2><strong>Choose a resort with a great pool </strong></h2><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/las-vegas-best-visit-alone-solo-travel-what-to-do-2023-8">Resort pools have become entertainment destinations</a> with day clubs, cabanas, restaurants, bars, music, and games. </p><p>Before booking a hotel, I look at the website to see what type of pool area is offered. I prefer multiple pools, a game area, and, of course, a bar. Some of our favorite pools are at Resorts World, Park MGM, and the Wynn. </p><p>Many of our afternoons in Vegas are spent relaxing by the pool, usually with a drink in hand.</p><h2>If you're a foodie, check out the resort's dining scene before you book </h2><p>The No. 1 reason I go to Vegas is to eat. Few cities in the US have as many <a href="https://www.insider.com/reserving-entire-las-vegas-restaurant-the-cosmpolitan-photos-review-2023-8">top-notch restaurants</a> as Las Vegas.</p><p>But not all resorts are equal when it comes to dining, so I always look for a list of restaurants on each hotel's website. I want a nice mix of cuisines as well as a few budget-friendly eateries.</p><p>For a long time, our favorite resort for dining has been The Cosmopolitan. We love to grab breakfast at Eggslut in the morning, a slice at Secret Pizza for lunch, and a pre-dinner cocktail at The Chandelier.</p><p>Our new favorite destination for food is Resorts World — its Famous Food Street Eats hall has some of the best Asian cuisine in Vegas.</p><h2>For a quieter experience, choose a resort without a casino in it </h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Las Vegas Strip at night with cars driving past" height="1125" width="1500" msid="104857454" hostid="261" sizebytes="199344"></div><p>Although I love the <a href="https://www.insider.com/las-vegas-life-disappointing-photos-2023-7">constant party vibe in Vegas</a>, sometimes I want a break from it and choose a resort without a casino. </p><p>There are a few places where guests can enter a quiet lobby, check in quickly, and arrive at their room without walking for miles.</p><p>Vdara is the ideal spot to combine a central Strip location with a quiet hotel. If you want something luxurious, opt for the Waldorf Astoria. Delano is a bit removed from everything on the Strip, but it's a lovely all-suite property for a romantic getaway. </p><h2>Don't forget to factor in extra costs, like resort and parking fees </h2><p>When checking hotel prices, factor in extra fees. Many of the better hotels now charge up to $50 per night in resort fees. Most hotels will also charge you for parking. </p><p>You can't do anything about it, but it's better to factor in this additional cost before your trip than to be unpleasantly surprised at checkout. </p><h2><strong>High prices often mean there's a big event in town — and you may want to change your travel plans </strong></h2><p>If a major event is in town, your best bet is to visit Vegas another time. </p><p>Large conferences and popular sporting events can quickly drive up hotel rates and make the city busier than usual.</p><p>A few years ago, we had planned to visit Vegas in early January. But when we started our search for the perfect hotel, every room on the Strip started at $500 per night.</p><p>I soon learned that the Consumer Electronics Show — the largest conference that is held here each year — was taking place. Needless to say, we canceled those plans.</p><h2><strong>Consider saving money with a midweek or summer stay </strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Hand holding iced drink at a pool resort in Vegas" height="1137" width="1512" msid="104857456" hostid="261" sizebytes="67842"></div><p>The best prices for hotels can usually be found midweek, so you'll save money if you have flexibility with your trip.</p><p>In addition, our favorite money-saving strategy is to visit Vegas in the heat of the summer. Temperatures will likely be above 100 degrees Fahrenheit at all times, but the room rates are reasonable, and I just plan to spend the day by the pool. </p><h2>Embrace the mindset that there's always a better deal somewhere </h2><p>I don't accept high-priced hotel rooms easily, so I compare prices on a number of websites.</p><p>First, I start with the hotel's own website. Although this is rarely the place for the cheapest prices, there are sometimes <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-never-do-at-hotel-from-frequent-guest-2023-8">extra perks offered</a> when you book directly from the resort.</p><p>If you come to Vegas regularly, it's worth signing up for one of the loyalty programs like MGM Rewards or Caesars Rewards, which can result in waived resort fees and free parking.</p><p>I also look for deals on websites like Hotels.com, Booking.com, and Travelzoo, where there is often a discount to be had.</p>

I've been to Las Vegas over 50 times. Here are my 8 tips for booking the perfect hotel at the best price.

My day doesn't start until I get my cup of coffee. So I was pretty pleased with some news out this morning from the <keyword id="43588" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Health-Organization">World Health Organization</keyword> that downgraded its warning on a potential link between my favorite morning beverage and - yep, you guessed it - cancer.<br /><br />Back in the early '90s, coffee was classified as a possible cancer-causing agent, but a <a href="http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanonc/article/PIIS1470-2045(16)30239-X/fulltext">new study</a> from the WHO's <a href="http://www.iarc.fr/">International Agency for Research on Cancer</a> helps clear its reputation. Sort of.<br /><br />There's another aspect of the report that's not so positive: Instead of a link between coffee and cancer, researchers think they may have found a connection between hot beverages and the disease.<br /><br />The study found evidence that drinking anything very hot - we're talking about beverages sipped at roughly 149 degrees Fahrenheit or higher - is "probably carcinogenic to humans." It found the strongest links between drinking hot beverages and <a href="http://www.cancer.org/cancer/esophaguscancer/">esophageal cancer</a>, or cancer of the food pipe.<br /><br />While all of this sounds scary, two things about the findings are important to keep in mind:<br /><br /><br /><br /><h2><strong>1. Esophageal cancer is not very common in the first place. </strong></h2>In fact, it makes up just about <a href="http://www.cancer.org/cancer/esophaguscancer/">1% of all cancers diagnosed in the US</a>. The disease is much more common in <keyword id="41896" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Iran">Iran</keyword>, northern China, India, and southern Africa. If you're an American woman, your <a href="http://www.cancer.org/cancer/esophaguscancer/detailedguide/esophagus-cancer-key-statistics">risk of developing this type of cancer in your lifetime</a> is about 1 in 435. If you're an American man, it's significantly higher - but still fairly low - at about 1 in 125.<br /><br /></img>

Lower-tier properties may lack the amenities and polish of their luxurious neighbors, but they are more likely to give low rollers like me comped rooms for minimal action in their casinos.</p><p>Despite my thrifty proclivities, I do like to treat myself to at least one night in one of Vegas' more opulent digs. Because I don't gamble enough to warrant any freebies at a high-end establishment, I turn to one of my favorite premium credit card perks: access to discounted luxury resorts.</p><p>One of the more popular programs is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-amex-fine-hotels-and-resorts">American Express' Fine Hotels and Resorts</a>, and I recently used it to essentially get paid to stay in a Vegas luxury hotel.</p><h2>American Express' Fine Hotels and Resorts</h2><p>American Express Platinum cardholders, both <a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/the-enhanced-business-platinum-card-from-american-express-open/?utm_campaign=bbi_051419_ab_vegas-discount&amp;utm_source=referral">business</a> and <a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/the-platinum-card-from-american-express/?utm_campaign=bi_051419_ab_vegas-discount&amp;utm_source=referral">personal</a>, and Centurion cardholders have access to "FHR." Benefits of booking through FHR include a room upgrade when available, daily breakfast for two, guaranteed 4 p.m. late check-out, early 12 p.m. check-in when available, free wifi, and a property amenity credit, which is usually a general hotel, spa, or food and beverage credit worth a minimum of $100.</p><p><em><strong><a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/the-platinum-card-from-american-express/?utm_campaign=bi_051419_ab_vegas-discount&amp;utm_source=referral">Learn more about the AmEx Platinum from our partner The Points Guy »</a></strong></em></p><p>On a recent visit to Vegas, I had my usual comped rooms for two nights, with the final night of my trip, a weekday, unplanned and unbooked. I had heard of some outsized value at a south Strip resort, Delano, which is an all-suite hotel attached to the Mandalay Bay Casino and Resort.</p><p>Much to my excitement, I found a room rate through FHR of only $79. After including taxes and the resort fee, for which Vegas is infamous, my total for the night was just shy of $140. Staying at a resort as nice as Delano for less than $150 is a great deal outright, but when the benefits granted by FHR are included, it becomes a steal.</p><p>It's difficult to apply a dollar value to early check-in and late check-out. However, I knew I would get the full value out of both the breakfast credits and food and beverage allowance. In this instance, the breakfast came in the form of two $30 credits to Delano's upscale cafe, Della's Kitchen. The credits could also have been used via room service.</p><p><em><strong><a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/the-enhanced-business-platinum-card-from-american-express-open/?utm_campaign=bbi_051419_ab_vegas-discount&amp;utm_source=referral">Learn more about the AmEx Business Platinum from our partner The Points Guy »</a></strong></em></p><p>While Delano is lacking in dining facilities, guests are allowed to apply the food and beverage allowance at Mandalay Bay's restaurants. I used the $100 food and beverage credit at one of my favorite restaurants in Las Vegas, Mandalay Bay's Libertine Social. I easily spent all of my $160 amenity credits. Subtract the $140 cost of the room, and it was like Delano was paying me $20 to stay at their beautiful hotel.</p><p>It's important to note that the property amenity credit category can change periodically. People value these categories differently, so be sure to note this before booking a stay. Chase's Luxury Hotel and Resort Collection can also only be accessed by select Chase cardholders. While FHR guarantees a $100 minimum credit in a variety of categories, LHRC's granted amenity can vary quite a bit depending on the resort. Some are similar.</p><p>For instance, currently, when booking Delano through LHRC, guests are granted a $100 food and beverage credit. This is much more useful to me than the spa credit currently offered through FHR, which I would struggle to use and, knowing spa prices, would cause me to spend much more at the resort than I'd like.</p><p><em><strong><a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/chase-sapphire-preferred-card/?utm_campaign=bi_051419_ab_vegas-discount&amp;utm_source=referral">Learn more about the Chase Sapphire Preferred from our partner The Points Guy »</a></strong></em></p><p>However, some resort amenity credits, when booked through LHRC, are not as generous. I have seen offers as low as a $50 credit for food or a spa treatment, and things as simple a wine or fruit amenity basket upon check-in. If you have access to both programs, it's absolutely worth shopping around before booking to see which amenity is more valuable to you.</p><h2>Book midweek for the best value in Vegas</h2><p>Both FHR and LHRC partner with properties all over the world. However, Las Vegas, and Delano specifically, is a sweet spot for these programs. Many high-end resorts are represented on the Las Vegas Strip and midweek rates are consistently reasonable. To get the most value out of any stay, regardless of your destination, the best option is to book a single night midweek, because the resort amenity allowance is allocated per stay, not per night.</p><p>So, if you book a two-night stay, you would still only be allocated one $100 property amenity credit. Breakfast credits, however, are allocated per day. I've used this strategy multiple times to get steep discounts on some amazing hotels. On a rare occasion, like in the case of my Delano stay, the benefits are worth more than the cost of the room.</p><p>All told, access to FHR and LHRC alone may not be worth springing for a new credit card, but it's worth taking the time to examine the full breadth of your current <keyword id="6354692" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> credit card perks. You may find some hidden value as I did. I used one of my favorite credit card perks to stay in a Las Vegas luxury hotel and come out $20 ahead

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Biden will join the striking United Auto Workers on the picket line — a first for any president.</li><li>Trump, like Biden, will also head to Detroit and hold an event to garner support for his 2024 run.</li></ul><p>President <a href="https://apnews.com/hub/joe-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Biden's</a> decision to stand alongside United Auto Workers pickets on Tuesday on the 12th day of their <a href="https://apnews.com/article/uaw-strike-ford-gm-stellantis-contract-offers-5dd4dee2056b7efe06d2a55433d8d13a" target="_blank" rel="noopener">strike against major carmakers</a> underscores support of labor unions that appears to be unparalleled in presidential history.</p><p>Experts in presidential and U.S. labor history say they cannot recall an instance when a sitting president has joined an ongoing strike, even during the tenures of the more ardent <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uaw-strike-union-threatens-more-stoppages-friday-if-no-progress-2023-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pro-union</a> presidents such as Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Harry Truman. Theodore Roosevelt invited labor leaders alongside mine operators to the White House amid a historic coal strike in 1902, a decision that was seen at the time as a rare embrace of unions as Roosevelt tried to resolve the dispute.</p><p>Biden will be arriving one day before former President Donald Trump, the front-runner for the 2024 Republican nomination, goes to Detroit to hold his own event in <a href="https://apnews.com/article/labor-union-auto-workers-trump-strike-dfcb805fd4e749b13aaf827e1463da73" target="_blank" rel="noopener">an attempt to woo autoworkers</a> even though union leaders say he's no ally.</p><p>Lawmakers often appear at strikes to show solidarity with unions, and during his 2020 Democratic primary campaign, Biden and other presidential hopefuls joined a picket line of hundreds of casino workers in Las Vegas who were pushing for a contract with The Palms Casino Resort.</p><p>But sitting presidents, who have to balance the rights of workers with disruptions to the economy, supply chains, and other facets of everyday life, have long wanted to stay out of the strike fray — until Biden.</p><p>"This is absolutely unprecedented. No president has ever walked a picket line before," said Erik Loomis, a professor at the University of Rhode Island and an expert on U.S. labor history. Presidents historically "avoided direct participation in strikes. They saw themselves more as mediators. They did not see it as their place to directly intervene in a strike or in labor action."</p><p>Biden's trip to join a picket line in the suburbs of Detroit is the most significant demonstration of his pro-union bona fides, a record that includes vocal support for unionization efforts at Amazon.com facilities and executive actions that promoted worker organizing. He also <a href="https://apnews.com/article/president-joe-biden-unions-democrats-presidential-campaign-8242bafc4e61ed88f7f211c621132102" target="_blank" rel="noopener">earned a joint endorsement of major unions</a> earlier this year and <a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-broadway-fundraiser-new-york-fc92b7f04ad2ac20c119e60337da5cfb" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has avoided southern California for high-dollar fundraisers</a> amid the writers' and actors' strikes in Hollywood.</p><p>During the ongoing <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uaw-auto-workers-union-expands-strike-second-week-new-locations-2023-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">UAW strike</a>, Biden has argued that the auto companies have not gone far enough, although White House officials have repeatedly declined to say whether the president endorses specific UAW demands such as a 40% hike in wages and full-time pay for a 32-hour work week.</p><p>"I think the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uaw-auto-union-strike-could-change-industry-forever-2023-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">UAW</a> gave up an incredible amount back when the automobile industry was going under. They gave everything from their pensions on, and they saved the automobile industry," Biden said Monday from the White House. He said workers should benefit from carmakers' riches "now that the industry is roaring back."</p><div type="image" title="A table with signs for United Auto Workers and those supporting the union." height="4000" width="5333" msid="103968539" hostid="261" sizebytes="980394"></div><p>Biden and other Democrats are more <a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-unions-reelection-campaign-2024-04b89292c9c41f35a127f2458d90a610" target="_blank" rel="noopener">aggressively touting the president's pro-labor credentials</a> at a time when Trump is trying to make inroads in critical swing states where unions remain influential, including Michigan and Pennsylvania. Biden is leaning on his union support at a time when labor enjoys broad support from the public, with 67% of Americans approving of labor unions in an August Gallup poll.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-receives-united-farm-workers-endorsement-for-president-2020-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">United Farm Workers</a> announced their endorsement of Biden on Tuesday, calling him "an authentic champion for workers and their families, regardless of their race or national origin." Biden's campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, is the granddaughter of Cesar Chavez, the union's co-founder.</p><p>Trump is skipping the second Republican primary debate on Wednesday and will meet with striking autoworkers in Michigan, seeking to capitalize on discontent over the state of the economy and anger over the Biden administration's push for more electric vehicles — a key component of its clean-energy agenda.</p><p>"If it wasn't for President Trump, Joe Biden would be giving autoworkers the East Palestine treatment and saying that his schedule was too busy," said Trump campaign adviser Jason Miller, referring to the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/east-palestine-train-derailment-norfolk-southern-biden-875699405d37cacbb5dd958dafb18071" target="_blank" rel="noopener">small Ohio town that is still grappling</a> with the aftermath of a February train derailment. Biden said he would visit the community but so far has not.</p><p>White House officials dismissed the notion that Trump forced their hand and noted that Biden was headed to Michigan at the request of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-uaw-boss-tesla-greedy-workers-pitiful-pay-2023-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">UAW President Shawn Fain</a>, who last week invited the sitting president to join the strikers.</p><p>"He is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uaw-strike-biden-middle-class-economic-pitch-unions-2024-campaign-2023-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pro-UAW</a>, he is pro-workers, that is this president," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Monday. "He stands by union workers, and he is going to stand with the men and women of the UAW."</p><p>Yet the UAW strike, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/uaw-ford-stellantis-general-motors-strike-labor-4132aa222c9a4456415af480d6fafa98" target="_blank" rel="noopener">which expanded into 20 states last week</a>, remains a <a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-electric-cars-uaw-strike-d73f259bf5e9242340e912ad1e9b4aa9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dilemma for the Biden administration</a> since a part of the workers' grievances include concerns about a broader transition to electric vehicles. The shift away from gas-powered vehicles has worried some autoworkers because electric versions require fewer people to manufacture and there is no guarantee that factories that produce them will be unionized.</p><p>Carolyn Nippa, who was walking the picket line Monday at the GM parts warehouse in Van Buren Township, Michigan, was ambivalent about the president's advocacy for electric vehicles, even as she said Biden was a better president than Trump for workers. She said it was "great that we have a president who wants to support local unions and the working class."</p><p>"I know it's the future. It's the future of the car industry," Nippa said of electric vehicles. "I'm hoping it doesn't affect our jobs."</p><p>Still, other pickets remained more skeptical about Biden's visit Tuesday.</p><p>Dave Ellis, who stocks parts at the distribution center, said he's happy Biden wants to show people he's behind the middle class. But he said the visit is just about getting more votes.</p><p>"I don't necessarily believe that it's really about us," said Ellis, who argued that Trump would be a better president for the middle class than <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/auto-industry-uaw-strike-effects-inflation-michigan-recession-biden-election-2023-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Biden</a> because Trump is a businessman.</p><p>The Biden administration has no formal role in the negotiations, and the White House pulled back a decision from the president earlier this month to send two key deputies to Michigan after determining it would be more productive for the advisers, Gene Sperling and acting Labor Secretary Julie Su, to monitor talks from Washington.</p>

For example, on a random search of Las Vegas hotels, I found that if you book a one-night stay at the Delano at Mandalay Bay, you can get a $100 spa credit during your stay, and one-night stays can be as low as $119 plus taxes.</p><p>In the past, I've personally used Fine Hotels and Resorts to book the Delano in Las Vegas when the unique amenity was a $100 dining credit, so you may see different amenities available. It's great to be able to get a nice meal and a hotel room for a bit over $100 in a city where it is easy to spend that much just on a meal.</p><p>While the trip to Vegas would have happened with or without this dining credit, it was nice to treat ourselves to a lovely dinner instead of taking the opportunity to pinch pennies. Not to mention, I probably would have opted for a less expensive hotel if it hadn't been for the dining credit. </p><p>Plus, hotels sometimes offer a third, fourth, or fifth night free in addition to all of the other perks.</p><p>If you book your stay with your <a href="https://thepointsguy.com/card-details/the-platinum-card-from-american-express/?utm_campaign=bi_052119_cl_amex-plat-fine-hotels&amp;utm_source=referral">AmEx Platinum Card</a> on prepaid hotels booked on amextravel.com, you'll earn five Membership Rewards per dollar spent on your hotel stay, getting you even closer to your next reward. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Britons' debts are creeping up again as the nation is "falling back in love with borrowing," said accountancy giant PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). </p><p>According to the firm's latest report "Precious Plastic 2015," <a href="http://www.pwc.co.uk/financial-services/publications/precious-plastic-2015.jhtml">the average UK household will rack up £10,000 ($14,924) in unsecured debt by the end of 2016</a> as Britons try to take advantage of record low interest rates that have stayed at 0.5% since 2009.</p><p><span>The data showed that b</span><span>orrowing on credit cards was responsible for 22% of the rise in the unsecured debt while loans, overdrafts and student loans accounted for the rest.</span></p><p>Last year, u<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">nsecured debt returned to an all-time high, in cash terms, of nearly £9,000 per household.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">But PwC warned that <span>"consumers could begin to feel squeezed once again" if interest rates were to rise.
