<ul class="summary-list"><li>Katie Vasquez landed her first venture capital job at 23 years old.</li><li>She said people who want a career in VC should leverage their network for opportunities.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Katie Vasquez, a 26-year-old investor at Calibrate Ventures based in Santa Monica, California, on her experience working in venture capital. The following has been edited for length and clarity.I'm an investor at Calibrate Ventures, an early-stage deep-tech <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/venture-capital-us-election-data-contributions-2024-10">venture capital</a> firm.The path that led me here was somewhat unconventional. My educational background is in astrophysics, but I've also dabbled in entrepreneurship and worked in consulting.I eventually got my first <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/venture-capital-jobs-vc-recruiter-tips-interview-2024-11">VC job</a> when I was 23 years old.Though it took me about a year and a half to land my first VC role after finishing college, I'm still on the younger end of professionals in my industry. My advice for other people hoping to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-get-job-venture-capital-no-finance-career-2024-10">get into VC</a> is to leverage your network and stay up to date on the industry.<h2 id="45740239-990a-40e5-995f-6a177e376ce5">I realized academia wasn't for me and eventually pivoted to entrepreneurship</h2>During my teen years, I was fascinated with astrophysics. In 2016, I started my undergrad at Brown University, thinking I would go on to get my Ph.D. and become a scientist.However, I realized the academic path wasn't for me when I spent my freshman year summer working with a theoretical research group and trying to code physics formulas. It helped me realize I'm more drawn to roles where I can work directly with people and see tangible results.During my senior year of college, I was interested in entrepreneurship. A friend and I had talked about <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-start-and-grow-a-business-founders-advice-2023-1">starting a company</a> one day. We brought in a third friend and did just that in our final year.We launched a mobile app that we spent the year developing. I got us into an accelerator and raised some grant capital. In the fall, we talked to a couple of VCs and even pitched <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-aragon-ai-founder-chose-startup-accelerator-neo-over-ycombinator">Y Combinator</a>. It wasn't a very successful venture, but it was a good learning opportunity.<h2 id="f17d28cb-e025-4dde-a7c0-b13aa110d2e2">I secured my first VC job with the help of recruiters</h2>I started working at EY-Parthenon in September 2020, after I'd graduated, as an associate consultant, assisting <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/private-equity-investment">private equity</a> firms in acquiring software and tech companies. This experience provided a great foundation for thinking more about technical due diligence, tech architecture, and strategy, but moving into investing and venture capital felt like the most exciting path.While I was in that role, recruiters reached out to me. I was surprised at first, but I was excited to make the leap. My background in physics, combined with my finance experience at EY-Parthenon and two summer internships at Goldman, gave me a unique blend of technical and financial expertise that helped propel my career.I worked with recruiters to get my first VC position at a firm called MTech Capital in December 2021. I stayed there for two years, but I still had a passion for physics and aerospace I couldn't explore at the firm, which invested in fintech, insurtech, and healthtech. I spoke about this with people in my network in the Los Angeles area, and I was referred to my current role, which I started in January.I'm now an investor at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.calibratevc.com/">Calibrate Ventures</a> focusing on deep-tech. A typical day includes taking a few pitches, checking with the team on our investment committee, and also working on developing my own role as a thought leader.Since I am early in my career, I am always looking to learn about every part of the business, so I ask a lot of questions and listen to my team, founders and mentors. I'm like a sponge.I'm on the younger end of the professionals in my industry, but after three years I don't think I'm the youngest anymore.I feel fortunate that the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-important-venture-capitalists-investors-in-los-angeles-2023-1">LA venture community</a> is vibrant and supportive. There are many young investors and a growing number of women in the field. I even recently moderated a panel at LA Tech Week and also launched a deep tech brunch series.Additionally, getting involved in the community and being part of different professional groups, such as Synergist Network, which is for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/these-are-the-best-female-early-stage-investors-2024-9">women in investing</a>, is helpful in creating a sense of community and support.Even though I'm younger in the industry, I've never felt belittled — everyone has always been very respectful.<h2 id="2dc982de-9e21-4df2-91a8-35047a1c40f4">People who want a career in VC should stay up-to-date on the industry and leverage their network</h2>For those interested in a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/landed-dream-job-vc-after-offering-set-up-payroll-free-2024-10">career in VC</a>, I think the best thing you can do is stay as up-to-date on the industry as possible — whether it's through podcasts, newsletters, books, or social media.I spend a lot of my time now reading and keeping up with scientists on social media to stay ahead of rapidly emerging technologies.Even before I was in my current role, I took time to learn more about the industries I was interested in. For instance, while I was primarily focused on fintech in my first VC role, I still sought out deep tech exposure and attended a Space Investor Summit in LA, which allowed me to connect with satellite insurance companies leveraging space observation data.I also recommend leveraging your network — even if it's somebody you went to school with a couple of years ago, ask them if they have anyone they can introduce you to and just pick people's brains by asking questions about their career.If you want to be in this kind of industry, let people know what kinds of opportunities you're looking for. That way, people can let you know if they see a job posting that would be a fit for you. Having mentors through your network can also be helpful for identifying if a career path or role is right for you.I'm committed to staying in VC for the rest of my career. He reiterated the company’s commitment to providing high-quality products and services that enhance the lives of Indian consumers. The chairman announced that the company’s board will consider issuing bonus shares on September 5, further rewarding shareholders as Reliance continues to grow. <h2>Transforming into a deep-tech company</h2>A major theme of the AGM this year was Reliance’s transformation into a deep tech company, with advanced manufacturing capabilities at its core. Ambani described this shift as essential to securing a place in the global top-30 companies in the near future. He highlighted the company’s strategic adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), calling it one of the most transformative events in human history. AI, he noted, opens up new avenues to address complex problems, making Reliance a net producer of technology. Reliance has been making significant strides in R&amp;D, with over ₹3,643 crore invested in FY24 alone, taking the total research expenditure to over ₹11,000 crore in the last four years. This investment is driving innovations in various areas, including bio-energy, solar power, green energy, and high-value chemicals. The company has also been active in digital research, filing patents in 6G, 5G, AI, and IoT, among others. Ambani assured that this tech-driven transformation would propel Reliance into a new phase of hyper-growth, multiplying its value in the coming years. <h2><keyword id="20337020" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail-business" source="keywords">Retail business</keyword> to double</h2>In addition to technological advancements, Reliance Retail, the company’s retail arm, is set to double its business in the next three to four years. Isha Ambani, Director of Reliance Retail, shared that the retail segment recorded a gross revenue of ₹3.06 lakh crore for the financial year ending March 31, 2024, marking a 17.8% growth over the previous year. The retail business has rapidly expanded, with Reliance opening 1,840 new stores in the past year, bringing the total to 18,836 stores across 79 million square feet of retail space. This growth has positioned Reliance Retail among the top-5 global retailers in terms of store count and among the top-10 in market capitalization globally. Isha Ambani emphasised that much of this growth is driven by a focus on smaller towns, where two-thirds of the new stores have been opened. Reliance Retail is also focused on creating high-quality, affordable products through its Consumer Brands business, which has seen the re-launch of popular brands like Campa, Lotus Chocolates, and Sosyo. Mukesh Ambani concluded by underscoring Reliance’s mission to provide energy security to India while also contributing to a cleaner and greener world. As the global landscape becomes increasingly uncertain, he expressed confidence in India’s role as a key growth engine in the global economy. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) projects that India will become the world’s third-largest economy by 2027, surpassing Japan and Germany. Ambani affirmed that Reliance will continue to be a driving force in India’s march toward becoming a developed nation.

Reliance AGM 2024: Company aims to double retail business, Mukesh Ambani says not pursuing short-term profit

The following has been edited for length and clarity.After finishing my freshman year at the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flying-from-nyc-to-michigan-every-week-for-work-supercommuter-2024-4">University of Michigan</a>, I planned to spend the summer on campus working on an independent computer science research project.A few days before the summer semester started, I was talking to a friend on campus when a random student sat down to join our chat. We talked about nonlinear dynamics and exchanged phone numbers.<h2 id="714b6817-e5b3-4c40-b120-5508c0bc21e3">He recruited me to live in a hacker house and work on a neurotech project</h2>Later that day, he sent me a message explaining that he was starting a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/heres-how-agi-house-bays-hottest-artificial-intelligence-hacker-2023-6">hacker house</a> called <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://myelingroup.github.io/">Myelin</a> and asked if I wanted to live there and work on a neurotech project for three months. I had heard of hacker houses before but didn't know of any around campus.The guy I met and three other students wanted to build a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/ai/news/a-living-computer-this-ai-made-from-interconnected-mini-brains-requires-a-million-times-less-power-than-chatgpt/articleshow/110909568.cms">wetware computer</a>. They pitched the idea to different VCs and other organizations and received around $8,000 in funding through Emergent Ventures and the 1517 Fund.Once they had the funds, they rented a house in Ann Arbor for three months. They aimed to recruit a handful of people to work on the project, hoping it would become a startup.He recruited me because he thought I was good at physics. The project's novelty seemed exciting, and I needed a break from just doing coursework.I was majoring in math, physics, and cognitive science. I wanted to do something interesting now instead of in seven years. After learning more about the opportunity, I said yes. I moved in in May 2023, when I was 18.<h2 id="7790a0c3-6eac-4d67-b5ca-f684dea03893">I got free rent in exchange for helping the team work on a project</h2><div type="image" title="a living room with carpet, chairs, and a piano" height="3024" width="4032" msid="114460240" hostid="261" sizebytes="876084"></div>When I looked for summer housing, it seemed like I'd have to spend around $1,500 for three months. It was a big draw that living in the hacker house came with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/live-rent-free-nyc-van-student-intern-adventure-2024-6">free rent</a> for the summer.The house also supplied some meals and covered the utilities. All I had to pay for was the extra food I wanted, but I ate very inexpensively, so my bills were around $30 a week.At any given time, 7-14 people from places like Michigan, Washington, Canada, Russia, and California lived there. Some people had internships in the latter half of the summer and left the house early.Not everyone was a student; some were later in their careers, but most of us were college-aged. They came because they wanted to work on and talk about <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-neurotech-allows-stroke-survivor-speak-brainwaves-thinking-paralyzed-2023-9">neurotech</a>, and such places aren't easy to find.A handful of us moved in on the same day, picked our rooms (I got lucky and had my own room), cleaned the house, and had our first meeting about the project and how we would operate.<h2 id="222a08af-7203-4c34-99d8-1ca341d37d3b">Every hacker house operates differently</h2>There were three teams, each with three or four people. The teams started with somebody presenting an idea for a team, and people joined if they liked it. The house was full of neurotech equipment and people working on projects ranging from personalized medicine to EEG-based object control and biological neuron computers.Whenever we woke up, at around 9 a.m., we started working on the project and worked on it all day until we went to bed at random late hours. We didn't do anything else. I was the only person enrolled in a summer class and completed my work during lunch or dinner breaks. I didn't travel or see friends outside this.Despite the high-tech focus, life in the house was simple. We had a piano that was played at regular intervals, food in the fridge, and beds. Some house members slept less than others, so there was almost always some conversation in the living room.<h2 id="03055209-bf20-48b1-bb79-9d4b4a1c1b2e">I spent my time doing research and sharing it with the other members of the house</h2>Our goal was to design a low-cost wetware computer that one could use for edge computer applications (robotics, drones, etc.).I worked with two other house members to develop a new paradigm for wetware computing. We eventually found a set of plausible methodologies for the project and wrote a white paper on how we could see them coming together. Being near the University of Michigan campus gave us constant opportunities to speak with researchers.We'd spend our days talking to researchers, reading papers online, and synthesizing everything. At the end of every week, we'd present our progress to the rest of the house.<h2 id="9f789bd1-74c3-40fe-979a-a181d5696bc2">When your time at a hacker house ends, the community doesn't</h2>By the start of the school year, we viewed our operations through a business lens and realized the potential for a business from a device we had been building: a microelectrode array.When school started in August 2023, we all moved out of the hacker house. I found other off-campus housing and returned to being a full-time college student.Since then, I've had the opportunity to stay at two other San Francisco hacker houses while capital-raising for the wetware computing startup I worked on at Myelin. I'm still in touch with everyone I met at the Myelin house. The community has been very valuable.<h2 id="0667f99a-ff70-4c84-9b5c-2f041248260b">Living in the hacker house changed the career path I was on</h2>Before this experience, I was confused about what path to take. I thought maybe I'd pursue a Ph.D. Living in the hacker house changed my mind completely. I'm now 100% on the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-become-successful-entrepreneur-according-to-career-coach-2024-4">entrepreneurship path</a>.I used to follow the flow and did things because that's what I saw others do. I was always aware of the fundamental disconnect in my perception of the future but wasn't sure how to mend it.My time in the hacker house taught me how to take a problem and investigate it intensely for a short period. I'll be able to speak about my neurotech research for decades.My focus has now shifted. Instead of continuing school at the University of Michigan, I'm off to live in a pro-town, a town built for deep-tech entrepreneurs, in Texas.

India to host Global India AI Summit 2024 in New Delhi on July 3-4

<keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> added over 1,300 active <keyword id="6358815" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="tech" source="Orion">tech</keyword> startups last year, taking the total tally of active tech startups to 25,000-27,000, a <keyword id="6372077" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nasscom" source="Orion">Nasscom</keyword> report said on Wednesday. India continues to be the third largest <keyword id="1071988" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tech-startup" source="Orion">tech startup</keyword> ecosystem globally (after the US and China). The country also added the second highest number of unicorns in the world, with over 23 added in the CY2022. Simultaneously, the potential pipeline of unicorns expanded to over 170, growing at a pace equivalent to 2021, according to the report by the National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom), in collaboration with Zinnov. "Despite the current downturns, opportunities abound for innovative companies that are leveraging emerging technologies to create actionable impact while prioritising business fundamentals over growth," said Debjani Ghosh, President, Nasscom. Despite the headwinds, while total funding in CY2022 dropped 24 per cent over 2021, the annual investments at $18.2 billion were higher than the pre-pandemic levels of $13.1 billion in 2019. The year also witnessed a significant investment focus on non-unicorns and unique startups. Almost 1,400 unique startups received funding in 2022, 18 per cent higher than in 2021. Among these, 47 per cent of startups raised their first round in 2022, the report mentioned. Both early-stage ($5.9 billion in CY2022) and seed-stage ($1.2 billion) investments grew between 25-35 per cent over 2021. In 2022, tech startups in the seed-stage secured 1,018 investments. Late-stage investments bore the brunt with a decline of 41 per cent in deal sizes greater than $100 million, due to considerable correction in the global public markets. "What is remarkable is the ecosystem's maturity, where founders are intentionally prioritising profitability over valuation and the investor trust, despite macroeconomic variables at play. This will pave the way for growth in 2023 and beyond," said Pari Natarajan, CEO, Zinnov. Tech startups are expected to continue increasing innovation and deep-tech adoption, particularly in areas related to SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) that require complex solutions, the report said.

But despite this fatigue, Winter doggedly pursued a diagnosis and a cure. He was diagnosed with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lyme-disease-symptoms-treatment-research-tick-bullseye-rash-2022-6">Lyme disease</a> after seeing five doctors. It took two years for him to make a full recovery. After an initial course of antibiotics, he changed his diet and sleep routine, took up meditation, and resorted to hyperbaric oxygen chambers, UV blood filtering, and infrared saunas.Winter isn't quite sure what was the silver bullet or if there even was one. He was able to afford these treatments thanks to a family fortune derived from German automobile part supplier Fritz Winter. Through his <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/family-offices-wealth-management-secrets-2023-6">family office</a>, he started investing in healthcare and life sciences in 2018, initially looking to help develop better treatments for Lyme disease but was drawn to deeptech startups that seek to 3D print organs and use <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-100-top-artificial-intelligence-healthcare-2023-11">AI for drug discovery</a>. He spun off these investments into a fund that has deployed more than $20 million since 2021."They say entrepreneurs are people that end up solving their own problems that they experience themselves but also that a lot of people experience," Winter, now 34, told Business Insider. "I think that was true for me."Winter is part of a growing group of family office principals, including heirs like himself and first-generation entrepreneurs, who are making direct investments in pursuit of longer and healthier lives. They are in good company; longevity startups drew global investment of more than <a target="_blank" href="https://longevity.technology/news/global-longevity-investment-hit-5-2-billion-in-2022/">$5.2 billion in 2022</a>, according to a venture capital firm, Longevity Tech Fund, which used PitchBook data. Billionaires like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/richest-wealthiest-entrepreneurs-ceo-billionaires-tech-searching-hacking-longevity">Peter Thiel</a> have made headlines for backing efforts to reverse aging at the cellular level.But for many investors like Winter, the goal isn't to cheat death. Driven by their own health struggles or deaths of loved ones, they want to extend not only lifespan but more importantly our health span, or how many years you can spend free of chronic diseases or age-related ailments.Winter thinks a health span of 90 to 120 years is "fairly reasonable" for him given the pace of medical advances. (There is only one documented case of someone living past 120). However, he is skeptical of the idea that scientific discoveries can outpace aging to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/longevity-escape-velocity-what-is-it">enable people to live indefinitely.</a>"There's been a lot of hype around longevity. We haven't seen a lot of it materialize," he said. "I think the most credible approaches that we've seen are still in choosing specific conditions and things that really affect people in their old age and could either prevent it or they could treat it reactively."<div type="image" title="Headshot of Maximilian Winter of Harmonix Fund wearing a navy zip sweater against a blue background" height="3998" width="5331" msid="107271127" hostid="261"></div><h2>Sorting between scientists and snake oil salesmen</h2>Three years ago, Winter spun out his family office's healthcare investments into a venture capital firm named Harmonix. Since welcoming outside investors, Harmonix has raised a $20 million fund that closed in July and with another on track to close by the end of March.The La Quinta, California-based firm has made more than 30 investments. One portfolio company, PathologyWatch, which uses AI to help dermatologists more quickly and accurately review and diagnose cases, was acquired for $150 million in November.Improving the detection and prevention of diseases like cancer and other top causes of death would be a gamechanger for lifespan and health span, according to Winter. Unfortunately, he has found it hard to find potential portfolio companies that align with these goals as the US healthcare system rewards more fiscal incentives to treating illnesses than preventing them, he said.<div type="image" title="Members of R360's Wellness and Longevity Circle visit Professor David Sinclair at Harvard's anti-aging lab." height="653" width="1307" msid="107268517" hostid="261"></div>Longevity investors face a slew of other challenges. Biotech investing is risky to begin with and expensive even for the rich. Researching and developing new drugs and therapies doesn't come cheap, and investors can't afford to skimp on due diligence.Kathrin Genovese, founder of KGM, a one-year-old Swiss wealth firm that advises ultrarich families, does not make direct investments. She and some of her clients are investors in Maximon, a Switzerland-based longevity fund that includes <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/longevity-clinics-are-next-iteration-luxury-biohack-live-longer-wealthy-2023-11">"healthspan clinics"</a> in its portfolio."I cannot tell you at this point what is real and is not real. And I think the industry is not able to tell me that either because the industry is too young," said Genovese, who previously worked for UBS and ran a single-family office for 15 years. "We will find out who will make it and who won't."Snake oil salesmen also run amok in the longevity industry, and high-net-worth investors are an attractive target. Winter's Harmonix Fund has six advisors to vet pitches, uses a due diligence procedure with more than 200 criteria, and examines data rooms, according to Winter.Peter Fioretti, a real estate entrepreneur and member of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/life-expectancy-elite-wealth-group-longevity-immortality-science-health-2023-3">R360, a membership club</a> for people worth at least $100 million, is passionate about longevity. Six years ago, he went to more than 10 doctors to get a thorough assessment of his cardiac health and a diagnosis of an arterial blockage. Now the 64-year-old, thanks to diet, exercise, and supplements, has a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-biological-age-is-reverse-aging-possible-2023-2">"cardiac age"</a> of 47, he told Business Insider last March.But the anti-aging enthusiast is cautious about investing, having made a few bets in stem cell research and another on an app that monitors a user's workouts and health and provides advice from a nutritionist. Fioretti's club, R360, does not advise on investments but it does have an in-house due diligence team that conducts background checks, verifies marketing pitches, and other tasks."It's challenging to assess," he said of biotech opportunities. "They're very unpredictable. The capital needed is hard to determine, and regulatory roadblocks usually create big negative surprises."<h2>How the rich incorporate these investments in their lives</h2>Zurich-based Genovese's goals are simple: to feel good and age well."When you start a new business at 60 with a partner that is half your age, you need to keep fit and think straight for another couple of years," she said. "Aging gracefully as a woman is even more of an issue than a man because we cannot come to the office and not look good or run businesses not looking in shape."For six years, she has followed a regimen of exercise and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/5-supplements-for-longevity-and-anti-aging-expert-recommendations-2023-12">supplements</a> meant to reduce inflammation, which is tied to age-related diseases. The fund for her multifamily office clients includes an anti-inflammatory drug in its portfolio.Eric Becker, cofounder of wealth manager <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cresset-asset-management-ria-wealth-growth-avy-stein-eric-bernstein-2022-7">Cresset</a>, and his two sons founded a family office and picked Blue Zone Foods as its first investment. The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/blue-zone-frozen-meals-tasty-healthy-expensive-2024-1">prepared-food</a> startup uses recipes from so-called "blue zones" known for long-lived people. "We just do the things that we can that are healthy and productive and do our best."Becker and his wife, sons, and their wives are members of The Human Longevity Institute's "100+ Experience," a concierge medicine program that involves extensive testing to predict the future risk of age-related disease.He has picked up tips on how to live better, particularly on portion control and sleep. But his favorite bit of advice comes from his mother's boyfriend, who recently turned 100: have a glass of Johnny Walker every day at 6 p.m.'It's the easiest one to comply with," he quipped.
