As the star of Chhapaak, a film about the real-life struggles of an acid attack survivor, Deepika’s decision to promote the movie with an acid attack "makeup challenge" on TikTok was widely condemned. Critics felt it trivialised the trauma faced by victims of such attacks. <h2>2. Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani promoting <keyword id="511715" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kabir-singh" source="Orion">Kabir Singh</keyword> </h2>The protagonist Kabir Singh was hardly a stellar example of manhood. And despite the film’s success, the movie was criticised for glorifying toxic masculinity and abusive behaviour. But Shahid and Kiara’s promotional efforts often sidestepped these critical conversations, focusing instead on the film's romantic aspects, drawing ire for downplaying its problematic themes. It is worth noting that director Sandeep Reddy Vanga said the following when Anupama Chopra asked him about the violence depicted in the film: “'If you can't touch your woman, wherever you want, and if you can't slap, you can't kiss, you can't use cuss words. I don't see the emotion there.” <h2>3. <keyword id="6354583" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="salman-khan" source="Orion">Salman Khan</keyword>’s rape comment during Sultan</h2>While promoting Sultan, Salman Khan faced backlash for comparing his grueling training regimen to feeling like a "raped woman." In fact, his co-star in the film, Anushka Sharma, also went on to call his comment insensitive. <h2>4. Kareena Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor on feminism during Veere Di Wedding</h2>When asked if she was a feminist, Kareena Kapoor said she wasn’t and that she believed in equality (???). Sonam responded to this with a supportive “woohoo!” (???). Veere Di Wedding was, by no means, a serious film. Kangana Ranaut’s Tweets during Thalaivii </h2>During the promotions of Thalaivii, a biopic on former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, Kangana Ranaut sparked controversies with political and inflammatory tweets. While the film focused on Jayalalithaa’s legacy, her promotional tactics often shifted the conversation to unrelated political discourse, detracting from the film's message. As per the report, the brand value in monetary terms, basis the engagement and followers for <keyword id="7099679" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Priyanka-Chopra-Jonas">Priyanka Chopra Jonas</keyword> stood at INR 2.65 billion, for <keyword id="2823" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Akshay-Kumar">Akshay Kumar</keyword> at INR 2.60 billion, followed by <keyword id="6354583" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="salman-khan">Salman Khan</keyword> at INR 2.52 billion, <keyword id="598" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deepika-Padukone">Deepika Padukone</keyword> at INR 2.11 billion and Shahrukh Khan at INR 2.09. In terms of engagement, the top three positions have been occupied by male actors. Salman Khan had an engagement of 2.25 lakhs, followed by Shahrukh Khan at 2.16 lakhs, Akshay Kumar at 1.7 lakhs, Ajay Devgan at 0.64 lakhs and Amitabh Bachchan at 0.62 lakhs. The five actors have a collective engagement of 7.3 lakhs, which was more than rest of the collective engagement of 21 film stars which is meager 3.64 lakhs. The 21 stars included both males and females. Only seven movie stars could cross more than one lakh in terms of social media mentions. The names included with mentions are Salman Khan (4.97 lakh), Shahrukh Khan (4.52 lakh), Kangana Ranaut (3.70 lakh), Akshay Kumar (3.54 lakh), Ajay Devgn (1.95 lakh), Aamir Khan (1.88 lakh), Alia Bhatt (1.80 lakh). Despite the increasing popularity of Ananya Pandey and Bhumi Pendkar, their mentions were less than 500 in the last quarter. King Khan still ruled the overall brand score with 41.76, followed by Priyanka Chopra 41.26, Deepika Padukone 36.54, Shraddha Kapoor 34.48. The lowest score was for Kangana Ranaut 9.87. Even Aamir Khan was the third last at 11.69. The overall score is measured out of 100. Five parameters have been considered for devising this score which are followers (20), trends (10), sentiment (30), engagement (20) and mentions (20). Speaking on the sentiment analysis, Anuj Sayal, MD, ADG Online and Checkbrand.online said, “Some interesting facts have come out in the last few weeks. The overall sentiment for KanganaRanuat has gone down. She slipped to almost last position. It is interesting to note that 71% sentiment for Abhishek Bachchan is positive and Aamir Khan’s sentiment is negative at 28.1%. Anushka Sharma’s overall sentiment is negative at 4.6%” “This is our first report and we plan to add more interesting anecdotes in our next quarterly report. We wanted to create a platform which could help brands understand their real value in terms of presence on Digital media on real time basis. We are eager to work and help them improve their overall digital presence,” he further added.

In a candid chat with the Times of India, the actress shared her delight of getting not one but two letters and bouquets this time, for playing both Tanu and Datto. Below is an excerpt from the interview: "Mr Bachchan sent me a letter for Queen too, but that was written in English and that too, the level of English that he himself speaks, which is high end. This time, he has written a poem and that too in Hindi, so I could read it out as is to my parents as they understand only Hindi. I felt like his two letters were my two medals. I am going to frame these and keep them for life as my memory. For my parents who are not artistes and don't understand performance, this is their proof that I have performed. Mr Bachchan has written about the minutest of details of my performance which makes it so fulfilling for an artiste, coming from a legend like him. This time he has sent me not just one, but two letters and bouquets, one for Tanu and the other for Datto. He wrote, 'It happens very rarely that our eyes fill up watching a performance. You made me cry'. He said for Datto, 'For the girl who is Tanu's lookalike called Datto, I don't know her but please extend my warm wishes to her.' What broke me down reading his letters was when he wrote, 'Main apne aap ko bhagyashali samajhta hoon, ki main uss udyog se juda hoon, jisme Kangana basti hai' (I feel fortunate to be a part of an industry in which Kangana is a part). Being an outsider, I was ridiculed for the longest time with people openly making fun of me. But the flowers Mr Bachchan sent have not just filled up my room, they have left me overwhelmed." 
 
Well, all we can say is that the other actors from the young brigade need to pull up their socks if they want to have this appreciation letter from Mr. Bachchan, who is an idol for many.

On the flip side, we still remember Saawariya (Ranbir Kapoor-Sonam Kapoor starrer) and Guzaarish (Hrithik <keyword id="1903405" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Roshan-Aishwarya-Rai-Bachchan">Roshan-Aishwarya Rai Bachchan</keyword> starrer), both directed by SLB. Well, one turned out to be a dud and the other was appreciated only by the critics. So this time, we are just keeping our fingers crossed for Ram Leela. 
 
Gori Tere Pyaar Mein Last time when <keyword id="2165" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Kareena-Kapoor">Kareena Kapoor</keyword> and <keyword id="14676" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Imran-Khan">Imran Khan</keyword> came together, the audience didn’t have much fun watching the rom com, Ekk Main Aur Ekk Tu. Will they be able to impress this time around, with this <keyword id="3778" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Karan-Johar">Karan Johar</keyword> production? The trailer failed to create a stir. But then, it’s a relatively small-budget movie and it doesn’t look like a big deal to recover the money, considering Kareena is in the lead role. Now we just hope that her marital status won’t become an obstacle.

Riding on a whopping budget of Rs 150 crore, we just hope Dhoom 3 ends the year with some fireworks.

<keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> actor <keyword id="2201" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kangana-Ranaut">Kangana Ranaut</keyword> is in vogue these days; all thanks to her brilliant performance in the latest <keyword id="2600630" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tanu-Weds-Manu-Returns">Tanu Weds Manu Returns</keyword>. As viewers are making a beeline at the ticket counters to get the coveted ticket to watch the movie, its Box Office Collections have already surpassed Rs 100 crore (till the time of filing this report). 
 
The film has turned Ranaut into a superstar, but mind you, this stardom has not come overnight; she has a decade long career behind her with nearly 30 films and several awards including the National Film Award. 
 
Ranaut seems to have somewhat altered her strategy. She is choosing scripts where female protagonists lead such as Queen, <keyword id="1132893" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Revolver-Rani">Revolver Rani</keyword> and Tanu Weds Manu Returns. Her brand equity has gone up as audiences see her capable of delivering a good solo performance and are ready to bet their weekend theatre budget on her. 
 
This is what exactly a brand needs from a celebrity endorser; capable of creating conversations and be a talk of the town. And Ranaut seems to have all this and more. 
 
Known for her psychotic roles (Fashion, Gangster, Raaz, Who Lamhe, Metro), Ranaut has had her share of success and failures. While Queen, <keyword id="3893" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Krrish">Krrish</keyword> 3, Tanu weds Manu, Once Upon A Time in Mumbai, Shootout At Wadala got a good response, others like Revolver Rani, I Love NY, Rascals and Double Dhamaal did not do well at the Box Office. 
 
Brands have mostly kept away from her barring a few such as Tanishq (in past), Levi's (in past), Emami (Boroplus), Lawman PG3, Himachal Pradesh Tourism, Myntra, Liva, Askme and others because of her inconsistent career graph. 
 
Well, it's a hard fact that she is no Deepika Padukone or <keyword id="6354850" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Katrina-Kaif">Katrina Kaif</keyword>, who are known and proven Brand Champions. However, after the recent success of Tanu weds Manu Returns, she has got into that league where brands will make a beeline for her? Will they bet large on this Himachal Pradesh girl? Emerging or Non-Emerging 
Geetanjali Bhattacharji, CEO, Marketing Services Audit, Spatial Access, finds Ranaut as a winner but has apprehensions about her brand associations as her personality depicted via films has been that of a non-conformist. 
 
"She has clearly emerged as a winner to shoulder ROI of a film both with Tanu weds Manu returns and her past release being Queen. But it will take an intelligent marketer with spine and a highly creative agency partner to generate propositions with a celebrity like Kangana. Huge opportunities aree there but vey few organizations will put the brand proposition in an interesting context with this celebrity." 
 
However, Shailesh Kapoor, CEO, Ormax Media believes that Tanu Weds Manu Returns is bound to make advertisers and filmmakers look at Ranaut very differently. "Till before Queen, she did not have much notice-ability. Because of Queen, she got noticed for the first time as a serious contender to be a top heroine. But Tanu Weds Manu Returns is going to be a pan-India hit, including the mass centers. This will give Kangana the reach that she did not have earlier," he adds. 
 
Even Darshan M, Director, Spoment Ventures thinks that her value will keep on increasing because she is taking up lead roles, delivering in them and people are liking her. "People are getting opinionated about her and that too in a good sense." 
 
<keyword id="233839" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjay-Shukla">Sanjay Shukla</keyword>, CEO, Percept One begs to differ; he says that she is a great actress, but not a brand endorser. "Previously she was doing very serious roles in movies like Gangster, Woh Lamhe, Raaz 2 and now she is taking up roles where she is like a free soul. She has played a twin personality, even though this is good adds to versatility but I am not how brands will look at it. People are definitely liking her, but she is yet to become a commercial star." 
 
Mass Appeal? 
Undoubtedly, Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif are brand champions in India. Both these actors are at the peak of their career, and they both command brands in their kitty and audiences at the theatre. Ranaut, on the other hand, is not yet there, but not that far off either. 
 
Bhattacharji points that brand endorsement is not her space and she clearly doesn't aspire to be there. "She addresses a niche. And intelligent investors (whether brand or producers) will optimize that niche instead of going mass." While Kapoor adds that this will depend on her releases in 2015-17. "Mass popularity takes time to build. Just one or two films cannot do that." 
 
However, Darshan M has a different point of view on this. He believes that Ranaut is natural and convincing, while with the other two there is a plastic and unreal attached to which the audience cannot relate. "Be it from a small or big town, a woman can relate to Ranuat but not Katrina because the latter is the perfect example of the Bollywood actresses who look good on screen but most of it is unreal. She has not become that eye candy or the arm candy, but is looking to lead from the front, which is liked by the people," adds Darshan. 
 
Cross Category Fit? 
It is true that Kangana Ranaut has had a very small list of brand endorsements, but experts believe that brands will be closely monitoring the success of Tanu weds Manu Returns and will be definitely considering her. 
 
While Kapoor believes that brands that want to communicate innovation, talent, women power and inner beauty will go for her, Bhattacharji points at radical fashion brands, unconventional jewellery designers, contraceptives, online players (challenger brands) will find her to be a better fit. 
 
Darshan M believes that Ranaut should not choose regular hair creams, but the ones which are quirky, unexpected, serious and reliable. 
 
Going Forward 
Now Ranaut is no Khan or Bachchan. And hence she will have to keep up to it. Audiences forgive a flop here and there, but they do not like consistency in this domain. Revolver Rani tanked massively at Box Office but Tanu weds Manu did not suffer from it. 
 
"In today's film scenario besides the Khans no actor can risk to be in that situation. She has proven herself time and again as a "Female Hero". The audience expectation will only soar high if not same for her upcoming movies. I think after <keyword id="3844" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vidya-Balan">Vidya Balan</keyword> she is the only actress who has successfully delivered a film purely on her solo performance," Bhattacharji says. 
 
Today Ranaut is all over the social media, brand promotions and Page 3 and we hope to see her more on the screen, be it through her films or the brand ads that she would endorse.

The March footfalls made up for half of the Jan-March quarters footfalls in theaters. But both these companies need more than a good month to turn things around. A strong recovery in footfalls and sales of these listed theatre companies will be driven by ‘strong content slate lines’, as per ICICI Direct. There was a big buzz around Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone-starrer 83 — which was based on the 1983 cricket world cup that India won. However, it disappointed movie distributors as it was declared a theatrical flop. Singh’s Jayeshbhai Jordaar too did not live up to its expectations. Kangana Ranaut’s Dhakkad, Akshay Kumar’s Bachchan Pandey, Prabhas’ Radhe Shyam too failed to impress the audiences. Apart from 83, all the other movies were released after India had overcome the third Covid-19 wave. Pushpa and Spider Man in the Hindi belt — both released in December along with 83 — were among the few movies that managed to do well despite Omicron fears. Brahmastra, Laal Singh Chaddha and Avatar — movies that can determine the fortunes of INOX and PVR

June is at the fag end and we almost have a mid-year report card of Bollywood. Though the year started on a dismal note, it picked up towards May and June. 
 
This year, January was like a drought month and even movies starring big names did not interest the audience. As Arjun Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha starrer-'Tevar'- failed to take off, even the Horrex (horror + sex) formula did not work out for ‘Alone’ and ‘Khamoshiyan’. 
 
Other movies that released in January and failed to make a mark included Sonam Kapoor-starrer ‘Dolly Ki Doli’, 'Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene', ‘Crazy Cukkad Family’, ‘Hawaizaada’ among others. 
 
The only respite that the Bollywood lovers got was from Akshay Kumar’s ‘Baby’, which also became the first movie of 2015 to enter the Rs 100 crore club. 
 
But the jinx did not end in January as February continued to bring more bad news for the industry. 
 
The big shocker came in the form of ‘Shamitabh’. The movie, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Dhanush, was directed by R Balki, the maker who has given us movies like Pa and Cheeni Kum. 
 
Later in the month, ‘Roy’ released, which recorded a good start but by weekend the movie fizzled out. Most trade pundits pegged the crucial India-Pakistan match at the World Cup as the reason for the drop of sales on Sunday but the movie could not recover much post this phase also because of negative word of mouth. 
 
Thankfully, later in the same month we had movies like ‘Badlapur’ and ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’. Both managed to gather decent collections at the Box Office. In fact, ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’ was a complete surprise package and managed to pull crowds even in its third week . 
 
March threw a mixed bag as Anushka Sharma starrer 'NH-10' received critical acclaim. April again was a dry month as Bollywood had nothing to offer that could have clicked with the Bolly buffs. 
 
However, Bollywood saw a turnaround in May. It started on a high note with Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Gabbar is Back’, which went to collect Rs 86.55 crore at the Box Office. This was followed by Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan’s 'Piku', which struck a right chord with the audience and collected Rs 111 crore worldwide. 
 
Later in the month, Kangana Ranaut wowed the audience with her spectacular acting in ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’. As per reports, the movie managed to collect Rs 190.87 crore worldwide. Given that the movie was made with Rs 31 crore budget, it stood out and is the most profitable movie of 2015 till date. 
 
But, the disappointment came from ‘Bombay Velvet’. Everybody had high hopes from Ranbir Kapoor’s flick but it fell flat. 
 
The momentum seems to continue with ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ and ‘ABCD 2’. ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ has managed Rs 37.05 crore in the first weekend and is holding the fort well. Also ABCD 2, sequel of ABCD, managed to get the biggest opening for 2015 and continues to do a good business over the week. 
 
The later half will see a slew of big- starrer movies such as Salman Khan starrer ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, Vikas Bahl of Queen fame’s ‘Shaandaar’, ‘Singh is Bling’ featuring Akshay Kumar, Nikhil Advani’s ‘Katti Batti’, Aishwarya Rai’s comeback movie ‘Jazbaa’ and also ‘Dilwale’ in which fans will see Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol paired together. In addition, there will also be a third installment of ‘Hate Story’, ‘Hera Pheri’ and ‘Kya Kool Hai Hum’ to look forward to. 
 
Commenting on the movie sentiment of 2015, Komal Nahata, Trade Analyst shared, “It has been a good 2015 so far. Sure there were some upsets in the start of the year but May has been extremely kind and the rest of the year looks really promising." 
 
We hope that the forthcoming movies get the cash ringer buzzing for Bollywood and we continue to see some entertaining movies in the latter half of the year.

It is the first film of 2020 to cross the ₹200 crore club. The movie which is still running to packed houses, earned ₹5.4 crore on January 24 and ₹9.5 crore on January 25.
