The company's Twitter account took off on Thursday, targeting SpaceX for its plans to make Mars inhabitable for humans.</p><p>"What doesn't suck? <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/earth?src=hashtag_click">#earth</a>," the company tweeted on Thursday. "But the way we treat it frankly, sucks." </p><p>Activista also bought the <a href="https://www.marssucks.com/">site marssucks.com</a>, which breaks down how Mars would be a less than ideal place to live from -117 degree temperatures to dust storms.</p><p>The statement against SpaceX has caught people's attention on social media, and references a topic that has been debated in recent years: whether or not the time and resources spent pursuing Mars colonization could be better spent focused on solving issues here on Earth. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is more interested in colonizing the moon with his space company, Blue Origin, but has said that Earth is <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2018-07-26/amazon-s-jeff-bezos-wants-to-send-you-to-space-too">"by far the best"</a> option for humans. Experts have weighed in both <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/5-undeniable-reasons-why-humans-should-go-to-mars-2015-4">for</a> and <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2018/10/22/17991736/jeff-bezos-elon-musk-colonizing-mars-moon-space-blue-origin-spacex">against</a> Mars colonization.</p><p>Musk does plan to make Mars inhabitable, but his end goal is not to abandon earth, but rather ensure an alternative exists as a backup. His other company, <keyword id="107096" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tesla">Tesla</keyword>, is more Earth-focused than SpaceX, and has a stated mission to "accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy," primarily by making electric cars mainstream.</p><p>SpaceX did not respond to a request for comment from Insider on the billboard.</p><p>Activista co-founders Beto Fernandez and Paco Conde told Insider the billboard was designed to create awareness around climate change and make people think more about what they could do to help address the issue.</p><p>"For many years people dreamt about Mars. But now we have access to real images of the red planet," Fernandez said in a press release. "So we decided to use these images as backgrounds for our social posts. Nothing like seeing the reality of this monotone, lifeless, boring and empty planet to emphasize the importance of us taking better care of the amazing planet we live in."</p><p>It's been a big week for SpaceX.</p><p>On Friday, the company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-nasa-launch-crew-2-astronauts-aboard-crew-dragon-endeavour-2">launched one of its spacecrafts with four astronauts out of Florida</a>, its first time reusing a spacecraft for a crewed mission. The spacecraft will spend six months at the International Space Station.</p><p>Last week, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-nasa-contract-industry-reaction-blue-origin-space-moon-2021-4#:~:text=SpaceX%20on%20Friday%20was%20awarded,Blue%20Origin%20representative%20told%20Insider.">SpaceX was awarded an exclusive $2.9 billion contract to help NASA return to the moon.</a></p>

Rather, he became an "occasional policy advisor" to Trump.</p><p>But Rubio's approach to supporting <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-melania-trump-family-spend-fortune-2018-7">Trump</a> has apparently confused the former president, who "privately wondered how much the senator wants the job," the Times writes, citing two people close to Trump.</p><p>Rubio is one of over a dozen GOP personalities vying to be Trump's running mate for 2024, but the former president and the Florida senator have not always been friendly.</p><p>The senator ran against Trump during the 2016 GOP primary election, where both candidates tossed insults at each other. Trump called Rubio <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-little-marco-rubio-2016-2">"Little Marco Rubio," </a>and Rubio returned fire by saying <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marco-rubio-donald-trump-small-hands-2016-2">Trump has small hands</a>. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Elon Musk just had his $55.8 billion Tesla pay package voided in a Delaware court ruling.</li><li>The decision, which Tesla can still appeal, goes beyond just damaging Musk's personal gain.</li></ul><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-ceo-elon-musk">Elon Musk</a> might be done with Delaware.</p><p>The Diamond State, which supposedly <a target="_blank" href="https://delaware.gov/guides/facts/#:~:text=%22The%20Diamond%20State%22,location%20on%20the%20Eastern%20Seaboard.">gained its moniker from Thomas Jefferson</a>, has proven to be a very hospitable, low-tax home for thousands of large corporations, including Tesla.</p><p>But Musk will have found that famed hospitality to be missing this week after a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/judge-strikes-down-elon-musk-tesla-compensation-pay-package-2024-1">Delaware judge</a> voided his $55.8 billion compensation package that was granted by the Tesla board in 2018.</p><p>The lawsuit, led by Richard Tornetta — an investor who held just nine Tesla shares — has now nullified the payout that helped Musk become the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-pay-package-wealth-lose-richest-person-spot-tesla-2024-1">world's richest person.</a></p><p>"The process leading to the approval of Musk's compensation plan was deeply flawed," Judge Kathaleen McCormick said in <a target="_blank" href="https://courts.delaware.gov/Opinions/Download.aspx?id=359340">a 201-page opinion</a>, which stated that Tesla's nine-person board at the time of the grant's approval was lacking any truly independent directors.</p><p>Musk's Tesla pay was structured without a salary to involve 12 stock option awards that would only be given once performance goals for each of them were met. Musk has met the goals for the awards but can only sell them after a certain period.</p><p>Though Musk can appeal the decision, there are signs that this battle is about more than just the massive pay package that has propelled him to a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-net-worth">$205 billion fortune.</a></p><h2><strong>Musk's ambitions are on the line</strong></h2><div type="image" title="A SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket with the Psyche spacecraft launches from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, on October 13, 2023. The spacecraft is bound for Psyche, an object 2.2 billion miles (3.5 billion kilometers) away that could offer clues about the interior of planets like Earth." height="2596" width="3900" msid="107299170" hostid="261"></div><p>As much as the Delaware court's decision is a hit to Musk's personal gain, it also risks being a hit to his ambitions with Tesla and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musks-spacex-bought-a-boeing-737-with-strange-livery-2024-1">SpaceX</a>.</p><p>In Tesla's case, a failed appeal would mean Musk loses options on roughly 303 million Tesla shares, leaving him with just a 13% stake in the EV maker.</p><p>Is that enough? Apparently not.</p><p>Musk argued earlier this month that he needs 25% ownership of the company to give him the voting control needed to see through decision-making on key areas of innovation such as AI and robotics.</p><p>"Unless that is the case, I would prefer to build products outside of Tesla. You don't seem to understand that Tesla is not one startup, but a dozen. Simply look at the delta between what Tesla does and GM," <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1746999488252703098?s=20"><u>he wrote on X.</u></a></p> <p>In other words, failure to gain more control poses a possibility that Musk's focus could end up away from Tesla as he pursues AI and robotics ventures elsewhere.</p><p>It's a prospect that may give <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/tesla-stock-price-elon-musk-fourth-quarter-earnings-cybertruck-evs-2024-1">Tesla backers</a> some pause. The carmaker is currently worth $600 billion, up from roughly $50 billion in 2018, when Musk received his pay plan. By comparison, Toyota, the second most valuable carmaker, is worth less than half of Tesla's value today.</p><p>Musk also claimed during the trial around his pay in November 2022 that his pay package would help finance his ambitions to create a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-ceo-elon-musk-wealth-multiplanetary-bernie-sanders-2021-3">multiplanetary species with SpaceX</a>. "It's a way to get humanity to Mars," he said.</p><p>As Judge McCormick noted in her opinion on Tuesday, "colonizing Mars is an expensive endeavor." So it's reasonable to take Musk at face value when he says his Tesla pay, as McCormick put it, is a "means of bankrolling that mission."</p><p>Technical challenges of inhabiting Mars aside, the whole project might be a nonstarter if a big chunk of its financing plan just went missing.</p><p>In addition to impacting his space colony ambitions, the judgement could also harm his ability to fund X. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/31/business/dealbook/musk-tesla-compensation-delaware.html">DealBook reported</a> that Musk had taken out "stock margin loans" to finance some of his business ventures, meaning it could be more difficult for him to raise cash if X is in need of more.</p><h2><strong>Delaware Inc dethroned?</strong></h2><p>Closer to home, Musk's legal battle could trigger a rethink of where Corporate America goes to do business. First, it's worth reflecting on why this drama has been playing out in America's second-smallest state.</p><p>Delaware is where an extraordinary amount of corporations in America go to be domiciled.. In fact, <a target="_blank" href="https://corp.delaware.gov/aboutagency/#:~:text=More%20than%201%2C000%2C000%20business%20entities%20have%20made%20Delaware%20their%20legal%20home."><u>with more than one million companies incorporated there</u></a>, the state is home to as many — if not more — businesses as it is people.</p><p>There are several reasons Delaware has become such a huge corporate attraction.</p><p>Favorable tax laws are one incentive. Something known as the "Delaware Loophole" allows companies to register in the state, but avoid paying corporate income tax if they don't operate there. A sales tax is also absent.</p><p>Companies are also offered a degree of privacy that is hard to get elsewhere, thanks to rules that allow them to conceal who their owners are. In theory then, this should be a place that allows the likes of Musk to do as they like with little to rein them in.</p><p>But as the court decision showed, that's not exactly the case: someone as powerful as Musk can face serious pushback. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tesla-leave-delaware-judge-blocks-pay-deal-2024-1">His response since then has been telling.</a></p><p>"Never incorporate your company in the state of Delaware," <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1752486201083543842?s=20"><u>he wrote in an X post</u></a>, before following up with another post recommending Nevada or Texas instead.</p> <p>Later, he <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1752491924848820595?s=20"><u>started a poll</u></a> asking X users if Tesla should incorporate in Texas, where the company has its physical headquarters. Almost 12 hours into the poll, roughly 88% of 743,200 voters said "yes."</p><p>How complex this might be — or if it's something Tesla's biggest shareholders would want, is unclear. But Texas could take the opportunity to claim it can be friendlier to corporation owners. In 2023, the Texas governor signed a law to create <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sidley.com/en/insights/newsupdates/2023/06/welcome-to-texas_texas-governor-signs-law-creaing-specialized-business-courts"><u>new business courts due to open this year.</u></a></p><p>If the court offers a regime that's friendlier towards corporate interests, expect Musk to embrace it.</p>

Why Elon Musk's battle with Delaware is about more than a $55 billion pay package

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6360409" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nasa">NASA</keyword> often draws its <keyword id="73998" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="astronauts">astronauts</keyword> from the military, but those personnel are usually pilots.</li><li>In the mid-1980s, however, NASA got its first <keyword id="640165" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Navy-SEAL">Navy SEAL</keyword> astronaut, Capt. William Shepherd, and he wasn't the last.</li></ul><p>It is no secret that <keyword id="359579" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Navy-Seals">Navy SEALs</keyword>, the special operations force of the US Navy, are constantly striving to out-perform themselves and each other, but how far can they go? In 1984, one of them went above and beyond his teammates and made history.</p><p>"At the time, NASA was taking astronaut candidates who were not just pilots," said Capt. William Shepherd, retired SEAL, and the first commander of the International Space Station. "There were candidates made up of doctors, engineers and scientists, and I looked at that and said, 'You know, I've spent a lot of time in the water in my SCUBA gear, and that's an awful lot like being in a space suit, so I think I'll just apply and see what happens.'"</p><p>Not long after, Shepherd learned he would become a member of the NASA Astronaut Corps, making him not only the first military non-aviator, but also the first Navy SEAL to go through astronaut training in US history.</p><p>After four years of training, Shepherd embarked on the space shuttle mission STS-27 (Space Transformation System 27), and launched into space for his first time December 2, 1988 from the John F. Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral, Florida.</p><p>"We are now at a crossroads, deciding whether we are bound to inhabit only the Earth, or if humans are to live and work far from the home planet," said Shepherd in an interview regarding the fifth anniversary of continuous life aboard the International Space Station. "Let us continue now with new explorations which are more expansive and more bold; voyages which will define us as a space-faring civilization."</p><p><div type="image" title="Navy SEAL NASA astronaut training" height="1664" width="2500" msid="77468327" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Shepherd's path to becoming an astronaut in service to the country started with Underwater Demolition Team Eleven, then SEAL Teams One and Two, and Special Boat Unit Twenty, all operating in the Pacific, Atlantic, and European theaters.</p><p>Although Shepherd was standing in the ranks among the most highly trained warriors in the world, he looked toward the stars to achieve more, he wasn't the only one. Capt. (SEAL) Chris Cassidy, a current astronaut, spent more than 10 years in the SEAL teams and was directly influenced by the previous achievements of Shepherd.</p><p>"In my experience with the SEAL teams and with going through BUD/S, it's given me the confidence to know I can accomplish anything that I want," said Cassidy in an interview with US Navy SEAL &amp; SWCC Page. "If you look at SEALs after their life in the teams, you'll find people in all different sectors of industry doing all types of things. I personally always had an interest in astronauts, and I followed Capt. Shepherd's career and was inspired by him to be an astronaut."</p><p>In 2004, Cassidy was selected for NASA's Astronaut Candidate Class and joined a group of fellow explorers including pilots and engineers. Shortly after selection, he began intensive training that included land survival, T-38 jet ground and flight training, Shuttle orbiter systems training, space station systems training, science and engineering briefings and orientation tours at all NASA centers, including the Kennedy Space Center and Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Alabama.</p><p>Currently, Cassidy is in command of the International Space Station on "Expedition 63." The current mission he leads is conducting research investigations focused on biology, earth science, human research, physical sciences and technology development, as well as providing the foundation for continuing human spaceflight beyond low-earth orbit to the Moon and Mars which is central to future space exploration as part of NASA's Artemis program.</p><p><div type="image" title="Navy SEAL NASA astronaut training" height="1664" width="2500" msid="77468330" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The Artemis program is an ongoing US government-funded crewed spaceflight program with the goal of landing "the first woman and the next man" on the Moon by 2024, and it is likely that a US astronaut currently serving in the program will be the next American to step on the surface of the Moon.</p><p>It is possible that astronaut could be Lt. (SEAL) <keyword id="8553647" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jonny-Kim">Jonny Kim</keyword>.</p><p>In 2002, Kim decided to leave his hometown of Santa Monica, California to enlist in the Navy and join the ranks of Naval Special Warfare operators.</p><p>"I didn't like the person I was growing up to become. I needed to find myself and my identity," said Kim in an interview with former SEAL, Jocko Willink. "And for me, getting out of my comfort zone, getting away from the people I grew up with, and finding adventure, that was my odyssey, and it was the best decision I ever made."</p><p>After completing Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S), Kim was assigned as a Special Warfare Operator to SEAL Team Three Charlie Platoon and served as a Special Operations Combat Medic, sniper, navigator and point man on more than 100 combat operations spanning two deployments to the Middle East including Ramadi and Sadr City, Iraq.</p><p>His experiences as a medic taught him about teamwork, humility and service. Upon returning home, he decided to challenge himself yet again and applied for a commissioning program that put him on the path to become a medical doctor. Kim's application was accepted and he began his residency to Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts.</p><p><div type="image" title="jonny kim" height="3712" width="5568" msid="77468333" hostid="261"></div></p><p>In 2017, Kim was a resident physician in emergency medicine with Partners Healthcare at Massachusetts General Hospital, and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He finally met his goal of becoming a doctor, but he didn't stop there. That same year, he applied to become an astronaut and was accepted, joining NASA's team on the Artemis program.</p><p>"I was told that with the right attitude, and with enough hard work, if you get up after every time you fail, you can amount to something and you can do positive work. You can leave a positive mark for our world, and that's what I aim to do," said Kim.</p><p>Kim's unwavering perseverance led him to be the outstanding American that many call a hero, and he encourages many others to follow in his path of greatness as well.</p><p>"Don't let that hunger for the unknown go away," said Kim. "That curiosity is so important, so you should maintain that passion for what you do. Never in a million years would I have thought I could have been an astronaut candidate. I didn't have the confidence from my childhood, but dreams are possible and all good things in life are hard to get, so persevere and don't give up!"</p>

How the first Navy SEAL ended up in space

What started out as a $2.3 billion prospectus rapidly became a $2.7 billion offering. Tesla stock shot above $250, the level at which the company has raised money in the past. The end times have been delayed. Tesla isn't Theranos.</p><p>That's not to say Elon Musk is happy about the victory. He likely didn't want to raise any more money from Wall Street. But business reality in the auto industry can't be denied: carmakers are capital gluttons. That's what many professional short-sellers have been betting on, and if Tesla had been shut out of capital raising, it would indeed be in a pickle.</p><p>But that was never going to happen, and while Musk likely knew that, I'd bet he earnestly wanted Tesla to prove that it could be sustainably profitable after two straight quarters in the black to end 2018. It's the CEO's fault that Tesla couldn't live up to his own expectations; his determination to reinvent manufacturing hurt the rollout of Tesla's Model 3. The vehicle's production ramp was 12 months behind what a proper 21st-century automaker would have been able to achieve with minimal drama.</p><p>But hey, water under the bridge!</p><h2>Risk for Tesla bears - and bulls</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Hollis Johnson/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">Please don't make me a taxi, Elon.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The risk now is that although Tesla's critics will have to comfort themselves with their own grumbling counsel, the company's boosters will probably feel empowered to resume their daffy predictions about Tesla's magnificent future. With 2019's cash-crunch averted, Tesla can now execute a titanic pivot away from being the world's most exciting car company to being a ... taxi service?</p><p>Yes, you read that right. It now sounds as if Musk has been captivated by the kind of money that Cruise, Waymo, and perhaps Uber are angling to rake in with autonomous ride-hailing. Tesla is talking about a million robotaxis on the road, with profit margins that would shame the traditional car business. </p><p>OK, the profit thing is a legitimate consideration. Robotaxis could yield 30% margins, versus 10% for a solid mass-market automaker. There's a reason why a lot of players are entering the space.</p><p>But is there anything less sexy than robot taxis? Tesla made its name by producing the coolest electric cars <em>ever. </em>Before Tesla, EVs were glorified golf carts. Post-Tesla, they were guided missiles on four wheels. I've been covering Tesla for over a decade, and this latest Muskian move is downright depressing. It's also understandable; Musk is a quick study, and more than ten years at the helm of a carmaker has shown him that ... it's hard to make Silicon Valley money in the car business. He's good at math, and he may see many more trips back to Wall Street with hat in hand to ask for money to build ever more cars that might post narrow margins.</p><p>(I have nothing against robotaxi services, by the way - but Cruise and Waymo aren't pitching themselves as being sexy-cool undertakings, preferring to consider themselves massive, complicated engineering efforts, requiring immense human brainpower. However, they keep turning up indirect evidence that it exists.</p><p>A <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1805.05355" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a> released in May, for example, suggests a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/planet-9-in-our-solar-system-new-evidence-2018-5">rocky object dubbed 2015 BP519</a> orbits the sun on a bizarrely high and eccentric path. A planet about 10 times the mass of Earth and 20 times farther out than Neptune, the researchers conclude, is perhaps the best explanation for what kicked the rock onto its wild course.</p><p>That ostensible world is most often called Planet Nine, and it was formally proposed in 2016 - a decade after the International Astronomical Union decided to classify Pluto as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/number-dwarf-planets-solar-system-2017-3">a dwarf planet</a> rather than counting it as the ninth planet in our solar system.</p><p>But as we learned by asking scientists about the evidence surrounding Planet Nine, the name has its critics. And it all comes down to where you fall in the Pluto debate.</p><p>Alan Stern, a planetary scientist who leads NASA's New Horizons mission, told Business Insider in an email that he is "strongly against" the term Planet Nine.</p><p>"It is an effort to erase Clyde Tombaugh's legacy and it's frankly insulting," he said, referring to the astronomer credited with the discovery of Pluto, which was considered the solar system's ninth planet for more than 75 years. "I hope you will change to calling this Planet X, as most responsible writers do."</p><p>Stern is an ardent defender of Pluto's planethood. In 2015, shortly after New Horizons flew past Pluto, he told Business Insider that the world's demotion from its former status as a planet was "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/new-horizons-alan-stern-says-pluto-dwarf-planet-bullshit-2015-7">bulls---</a>." In 2017, he and five other researchers <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/planet-definition-astronomy-debate-2017-3">asked the IAU to change its definition</a> of a planet to mean any mostly round object that wasn't a star. He also recently authored a perspective on the issue <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/speaking-of-science/wp/2018/05/07/yes-pluto-is-a-planet/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in the Washington Post</a>.</p><p>But the two scientists who proposed the existence of Planet Nine and named it in 2016 - Mike Brown and Konstantin Batygin - disagree with Stern's critique and his historical argument.<span style="background-color: #ffff00;"></span></p><h2>Planet X vs. Planet 9</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://loc.gov/pictures/resource/cph.3c28068/">Public domain</a></span></p><p class="caption">Percival Lowell.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The term Planet X has <a href="http://www.astronomy.com/year-of-pluto/2015/05/percival-lowells-three-early-searches-for-planet-x" target="_blank" rel="noopener">deep roots</a> in the history of astronomy, dating back to the discovery of Neptune in 1864.</p><p>Some oddities were found in the orbits of Neptune and Uranus that astronomers couldn't explain. In 1903, Percival Lowell - the astronomer who'd go on to lay the groundwork for Pluto's discovery - spoke about a possible ninth planet "X" that could be causing those abnormalities. In 1905, he started using the Lowell Observatory to hunt for it.</p><p>Lowell spent the next decade taking hundreds of photos of space, but never identified that mystery planet. He died in 1916.</p><p>In 1930, astronomer Clyde Tombaugh, who eventually worked at Lowell Observatory, found the world his predecessor had proposed and searched for. Tombaugh named the object Pluto in part because he later found it in Lowell's old photographs; the name starts with P and L - Lowell's initials.</p><p>Even after Pluto's discovery, though, scientists thought there could still be another undiscovered Planet X influencing Uranus' path. That is, until Voyager 2 flew past Neptune in 1989. Scientists used the event to figure out that Neptune was less hefty than previously thought (a difference roughly equivalent to Mars' mass), and that revision solved the perceived discrepancies in Uranus' orbit.</p><p>Batygin and Brown said this is why they and many other astronomers avoid the use of the term Planet X.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Magnolia Pictures</span></p><p class="caption">A still from "Melancholia," a movie about a rogue planet that destroys Earth.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"'Planet X' is not a generic reference to some unknown planet, but a specific prediction of Lowell's which led to the (accidental) discovery of Pluto. Our prediction is not related to this prediction," Brown told Business Insider in an email.</p><p>Batygin put it a different way: "The reason we call it Planet Nine is becuase the story of Planet X is more or less done," he said. "Planet Nine is the most descriptive set of words to describe what we are after."</p><p>He added that the term does not suggest any "disrespect or sleight to Clyde Tombaugh's legacy" as the person who found Pluto and discovered the Kuiper Belt, a region of the outer solar system inhabited by small, icy worlds.</p><p>Batygin opposes the term Planet X for another reason, too: he wants to distinguish the work astronomers are doing from wild claims of a hypothetical world that could slam into Earth.</p><p>"Crazy people speculate about Planet X coming to destroy Earth. I get these crazy emails all of the time," he said. [Planet Nine] is another way to discern between the nut jobs and what we're doing."</p><p>Stern contends, however, that Planet X "is widely recognized as a generic term for undiscovered planets" and thus appropriate.</p><h2>Finding and exploring new worlds beyond Pluto</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA21867">NASA/JHUAPL/SwRI/Alex Parker</a></span></p><p class="caption">An illustration of Ultima Thule, also known as Kuiper Belt object 2014 MU69.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Stern said he and his colleagues don't think the case for a planet beyond Pluto (that fits the current IAU definition) is very strong.</p><p>"The fact they've now been looking for two years and found nothing doesn't help," he said.</p><p>Brown and Batygin shrug off this criticism, as it arguably took more than 25 years' worth of effort to find Pluto. </p><p>"The Planet Nine theory is in quite good shape," Batygin said. He and Brown are currently using the Subaru telescope atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii to conduct their search, but that comes with its own challenges.</p><p>"The observational search for Planet Nine is proving very difficult, basically because of weather," Batygin said. "Last year we lost more than half of our observing season to being clouded out or hailed on, but we're back on the telescope this fall. We'll keep on gong as long as the theory is strong."</p><p>The duo also remains unconvinced that <a href="https://www.colorado.edu/today/2018/06/04/collective-gravity" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a gaggle of icy objects tugging on one another</a> could explain the bizarre orbit of 2015 BP519, the rocky object beyond Neptune. That suggestion came from astronomers at the University of Colorado earlier this week, but Batygin said if that were the case, those icy objects would need a combined weight many times the suspected weight of the entire Kuiper Belt.</p><p>"What they're proposing is a contradiction with what we know about the Kuiper Belt," Batygin said.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>NASA</span></p><p class="caption">The New Horizons probe before launch.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Stern, who co-authored a book titled "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Chasing-New-Horizons-Inside-Mission/dp/1250098963" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chasing New Horizons: Inside the Epic First Mission to Pluto</a>", is currently beginning a new phase of Kuiper Belt exploration with New Horizons. The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nuclear-powered-spacecraft-nasa-history-2017-3">nuclear-powered spacecraft</a> recently woke up to prepare to explore Ultima Thule: a strange icy object beyond Pluto.</p><p>"IT'S HAPPENING! IT'S HAPPENING! New Horizons is awake after a nearly 6 month hibernation. Flyby preparations for Ultima Thule begin shortly!" <p class="p1"><span class="s1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>"Destiny" is not the same game that was released nine months ago.</span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">From the makers of "Halo," one of the biggest gaming franchises of all time, "Destiny" lets players create their own space warriors, called Guardians, to fight all the minions of the Darkness that inhabit the Earth, the Moon, Venus, and Mars. </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">"Destiny" didn't receive the same critical praise "Halo" did when it first released back in 2001. But now that Bungie released the second major expansion for "Destiny" last week, the game feels more complete than it's ever felt. With all the additions and tweaks, "Destiny" feels like a much more balanced and ultimately more satisfying experience.</span></p><h2 class="p1"><span class="s1"><strong>The good</strong></span></h2><p class="p1"><span class="s1">There are a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/destiny-house-of-wolves-features-new-weapons-armor-rewards-2015-5">ton of new things</a> to discover in "Destiny," now that the second expansion, "The House Of Wolves," is available. Here's all the positive takeaways:</span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">The new social space.</strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> There's a new area called the Vestian Outpost, which serves as your main site for getting new bounties, weapons, and other missions specific to the House of Wolves storyline. This area is relatively small but gorgeous, especially as the nearby asteroid belt bathes the area in a warm purple glow. There are new non-playable characters (NPCs) to interact with at this Outpost, which all have funny things to say if you listen closely, and Bungie even added new music for this particular area, which sounds both haunting and epic. That said, there are a ton of doors in this new area, and you can open only a few of them. Hopefully we see new areas open up over time.</span></li><li><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">New story missions.</strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> In this expansion, the Queen calls upon all Guardians to hunt down the House of Wolves, a group of aliens called Fallen that were once loyal to the Queen before they decided to rebel. The story missions weren't a highlight in the original game or the first "Destiny" expansion, but they shine in "House of Wolves": The voiceovers are colorful and engaging, and they give you a sense of purpose as you move forward in the story. There are also a few welcome surprises and epic boss fights, all of which are highly memorable.</span></li><li><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">The new strike.</strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> "The Shadow Thief" won't be a long adventure for your three-man team, but boy is it fun. You and your teammates must hunt down Tanniks the Scarred, a Fallen warrior - you chase him across through the moon's caverns, and eventually follow him into his spaceship, inflicting damage along the way. Finally you'll square off against him in a giant arena-like room. It's a heart-pounding ride with excellent pacing.</span></li></ul><p class="p3"><span class="s1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><br /></span></p><ul><li><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">The new content. </strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Weapons, armor, enemies, bosses, gear, and more - there is a ton of new stuff to discover in "Destiny." And it's all designed to fit certain themes, like the Queen, the House of Wolves, and some of the other challenges you'll find along the way.  </span></li><li><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">The "new" Crucible.</strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> If you want to fight against other Guardians, you play the Crucible - but after last week's update, you'll now get double rewards for everything you do, and you'll be rewarded based on your performance, not just at random. Bungie added a few new maps, too, which are all beautiful and fun to play. </span></li><li><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">The Trials of Osiris.</strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> This is the ultimate test for fans of the Crucible: It's a weekly event that runs every Friday through Monday, where teams of three square off in elimination-style rounds: Win five rounds and you've won the match, and you need either nine wins, or three losses, to complete the Trials. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/destiny-trials-of-osiris-flawless-rewards-2015-5">As incredible rewards await those Guardians that complete the Trials of Osiris flawlessly</a> (nine wins and zero losses), you won't find a more thrilling experience in Destiny, especially as you start to rack up the wins - since you won't know which teams you're playing ahead of time, your winning streak is always at risk.</span></li></ul><h2 class="p3"><span class="s1">The not-so-good</span></h2><p class="p3"><span class="s1">"Destiny" has never been a perfect game, so even though "The House of Wolves" introduces a ton of positive changes, there are still a few gripes we have:</span></p><ul><li><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">The new social space is a bit limited.</strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> One of the first things I noticed while perusing the Vestian Outpost is how many locked doors I encountered. Hopefully we see some new areas open up in this social space over time.</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><strong>One's storage vault isn't nearly as big as it needs to be.</strong> If you need more room to store all the weapons, armor, and materials you've collected from the game, you simply drop them in your vault, which you <span>can even access over mobile in case you want to quickly switch items between characters. Unfortunately, the size of the vault can't possibly contain all the new goodies you'll come across in "House of Wolves," meaning you'll need to find ways to clear up space - namely, deleting old items you've picked up. This is unfortunate: I want to keep all the goods I've collected since September, but there's no way I can do that right now.</span></span></li><li><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">Matchmaking is still an issue.</strong></strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> Many of the best experiences in "Destiny" require three or six other players - but if you don't have many friends that play the game, you'll be forced to look for pick-up groups online, or you're out of luck. Two of the new endgame activities, "Prison of Elders" and "Trials of Osiris," both fall under this category, where you'll be forced to look for "Destiny" players online if you want to play the game. Bungie acknowledges that everyone plays "Destiny" differently, and even offers matchmaking for certain aspects of the game, but it would be nice to see more matchmaking for other parts of the game.</span></li><li><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">Many "new" locations aren't actually new at all.</strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> New Crucible maps aside, "The House of Wolves" doesn't offer many new sights. You'll be running through the same spots on the same planets as before, but you'll see them in new ways - for example, you revisit one of the first areas you play when you start a new game, but you play through that level backwards. And aside from the Prison of Elders and the new planet that emerges if you score a perfect 9-0 in Trials of Osiris, you'll be treated to many of the same old maps. That's a bit disappointing considering how much else in this expansion is "new." </span></li></ul><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><br /></span></p><ul><li><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">"The Prison of Elders" is flawed and repetitive.</strong><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> In lieu of a traditional "raid," where six players are sent to a giant area and forced to use teamwork to solve puzzles and defeat enemies, The House of Wolves comes with an "arena" mode called "Prison of Elders," where you'll fight wave after wave of enemies. If you beat all five rounds in the prison, you'll be treated to the Queen's treasures. But despite the great rewards in the Prison of Elders, the journey to get there is tired and unremarkable. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">You'll fight the same enemies over and over - albeit with different "modifiers" that change aspects of gameplay, like making certain weapons do more damage or the ability to deal out more damage while airborne. But the modifiers don't help much; Prison of Elders feels like a grind. There's no real story in this game mode, it's all about killing off enemies and completing mini-missions that will kill you and your entire team if you don't complete them in a certain time frame. Some people will love having what essentially boils down to a shooting gallery, but personally, I was disappointed at the tedium of this new mode. I prefer Trials of Osiris for getting the new endgame gear, even though that mode's restricted to weekends only.</span></li></ul><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><br /></span></p><p class="p3"><span class="s1">I have other small nitpicks - the inability to re-join a fire team can be particularly frustrating for players that were accidentally booted due to a bad internet connection - but by and large, much of "Destiny" will continue to change (and hopefully improve) over time. Since its September launch, Bungie has proven it's constantly listening to fans and shaping the game based off that feedback to create the best, frictionless experience possible. Many of the improvements and additions in "House of Wolves" were originally suggested by the "Destiny" community.</span></p><p class="p3"><span class="s1">In all, "Destiny" feels like a more complete game thanks to the "House of Wolves" expansion. There's heaps of new armor and weapons to discover, countless weekly challenges that offer equally great challenges and rewards, and the best multiplayer experience I've ever had thanks to "Trials of Osiris." If you haven't played "Destiny" - ever, or in the last week especially - now's a great time. But what's most exciting is the fact that "Destiny" isn't done growing: This is only the first year of Bungie's 10-year plan for the franchise.
