<keyword id="15935327" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ivan-manuel-menezes" source="Orion">Ivan Manuel Menezes</keyword>, the India-born CEO of the world's biggest spirits company <keyword id="6361490" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="diageo" source="Orion">Diageo</keyword>, died on Wednesday, days after the firm said he was hospitalised for treatment.<br /><br />Menezes, 64, who was to retire at the end of this month, was admitted to hospital for treatment of conditions, including a stomach ulcer, sources in know of the matter said.<br /><br />The reason for his death in London was not immediately known.<br /><br />Diageo had on Monday announced that CEO-designate <keyword id="16964426" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="debra-crew" source="Orion">Debra Crew</keyword> will assume the top role on an interim basis immediately as Menezes undergoes medical treatment.<br /><br />"Over the weekend, we learned that Ivan's recovery suffered a significant setback due to complications, which followed emergency surgery on the ulcer," Diageo had said in a statement.<br /><br />Pune-born Menezes, whose father Manuel Menezes was the chairman of Indian Railway Board, was educated at the prestigious St Stephen's College in Delhi and Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.<br /><br />Menezes joined Diageo in 1997 after its formation through the merger of Guinness and Grand Metropolitan. He rose quickly in the ranks to become an executive director in July 2012 and chief executive officer in July 2013. <ul class="summary-list"><li><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon">Amazon's</a> CFO said political events and the Olympics are distracting people from spending.</li><li>While it sounds like an excuse, there might be some truth to his predictions for the rest of 2024.</li></ul><p>It's safe to say the US has <em>a lot </em>going on right now.</p><p>In fact, there's so much going on that Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky partially blamed a weaker-than-expected sales forecast for this quarter on the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-cfo-blames-olympics-and-trump-assassination-for-slowing-sales-2024-8">Olympics and the Trump assassination attempt</a>.</p><p>"There's a lot of events that are occupying people's attention right now, from political conventions to the election itself to the Olympics," he said on Thursday.</p><p><span>"No matter what you're selling or providing, customers only have so much attention," Olsavsky said</span>. <span>"When high profile things happen, or the assassination attempt a couple of weeks ago, you do see that people shift their attention to news, and so it's more about distractions."</span></p><p>And while it might sound like the CFO version of the old "dog ate my homework" excuse, he could be onto something.</p><p>The news cycle is already busy churning out stories of gold medals and keeping up with the campaign trail, and we're all still waiting to see who <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-kelly-kamala-harris-vice-president-capitol-scene-2024-8">Kamala Harris selects as her vice president candidate</a> after Joe Biden's surprise move to drop out of the presidential race. Then there's the election itself — and, of course, the chance for further unprecedented news (like the shocking Trump shooting) before November.</p><p>Meantime, consumers are already suffering from a prolonged period of high prices and inflation that's changing how we spend money.</p><p>Fast food chains, including <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/shoppers-spending-less-retailers-brands-cutting-prices-economy-explained-why-2024-7">McDonald's, Burger King, and Taco Bell, have had to add discounts</a> to their menus to get customers to come back and eat with them again.</p><p><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/starbucks-reinvented-cafes-managment-plan-lines-waits-sales-2024-7">Coffee giant Starbucks</a> saw visits drop amid "a challenging consumer environment," CEO Laxman Narasimhan said.</p><p>Alcohol companies are suffering, too. Diageo, which sells brands including Don Julio, Smirnoff, and Johnnie Walker, experienced its first annual fall in sales since 2020, the Financial Times reported. </p><p><span>"We are in a very extraordinary consumer environment," CEO Debra Crew said, according to the FT. "You do see persistent inflation that is really weighing on consumers and weighing on their wallets."</span></p><p><span>Meantime, other signs are pointing to a slowing economy. On Friday, </span><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/unemployment-rate-job-growth-july-labor-market-economic-data-2024-7?utm_medium=ingest&amp;utm_source=markets&amp;_gl=1*ffl5yt*_ga*MjA5MTQ1ODU5My4xNzA5NzYxMzM3*_ga_E21CV80ZCZ*MTcyMjYxNDQ3My42NTEuMS4xNzIyNjE4NDg4LjU5LjAuMA..">data showed the US added 114,000 jobs in July</a> <span>— far below estimates of 175,000. The unemployment rate </span>also unexpectedly rose. That spooked investors, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-selloff-today-jobs-report-recession-unemployment-tech-earnings-2024-8?_gl=1*1xusxpn*_ga*MjA5MTQ1ODU5My4xNzA5NzYxMzM3*_ga_E21CV80ZCZ*MTcyMjYxNDQ3My42NTEuMS4xNzIyNjE4MzY5LjIzLjAuMA..">with all three major US stock indices dropping significantly.</a></p><p>So, although the Olympics maybe aren't stopping everyone from adding items to their Amazon carts, it seems like Olsavsky does indeed have a point. So buckle up for the rest of 2024 — it might be a bumpy ride.</p>

I don't want to come out from behind the curtain."</p><p>The actress said that when the wardrobe department asked her to emerge so they could take one photo of her in the bikini, she was self-conscious. </p><p>"I step out," she wrote."I feel my cheeks blush with embarrassment. I hate this feeling, the feeling of so much of my body being exposed. It feels sexual to me. I'm ashamed."</p><p>McCurdy added: "I fold my arms across my body to try and cover it up more. I hunch my shoulders over like a little cave to protect me. I don't want to look sexual. I asked if I could please just try on one-pieces with board shorts, the way that I feel most comfortable in a bathing suit. Being covered up. I feel like I'm barely hanging on to my childlike body and the innocence that comes with it. I'm terrified of being looked at like a sexual being. It's disgusting. I'm not that. I'm this. "I almost start to laugh, thinking he might be messing with me for fun like he does sometimes, but then I recognize that there is a deep anger in him. This is no time for laughter. Egypt alone has made over $5 billion a year in 2019 and 2020, mostly from the toll received from the ships passing through the Suez Canal. That’s nearly $16 million lost in a day.Reports suggest that the Japanese firm Shoei Kisen KK, the owner of Ever Given, and its insurers could face claims from the Suez Canal Authority for loss of revenue. Not just that, other ships that are stuck because of this blockade could also file claims. <br /><br />Container ships, as big as Ever Given⁠— which is almost as big as the Empire State Building in New York⁠— are likely to have insurance for hull and machinery damage up to $100-140 million, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-egypt-suezcanal-ship-insurance-idUSKBN2BG31A">insurance sources told Reuters</a>. However, if the trade waterway remains choked for a month, the loss of revenue for Cairo will be nearly half a billion dollars.<br /><br /><strong>The container crunch in the world is set to get worse</strong>    <div type="image" title="Suez Canal" height="720" width="1280" msid="81708424" hostid="261"></div>The world was already dealing with a shortage of containers since the pandemic. It had taken a huge toll on both exporters and importers in India. <br /><br />For instance, according to data from Yes Securities, Sea freights from China to Mumbai pre‐Covid were at $600 per container. Two months ago, the freights were at $4,000 for a container, now it has dropped to $2,500 for a container. It’s still more than four times what it was a year ago. <br /><br />The container shortage was expected to ease only by September 2021, according to industry estimates. Now, if more containers get stuck due to the Suez Canal, the logistics cost for nearly all items that are part of global trade will get more expensive. <br /><br />Spot freight rates from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean had already hit the highest level since Feb 2, said S&amp;P Global citing Platts data on March 24. Freight rates in the Mediterranean and Black Sea were also strengthening, with ships stuck in the long traffic jam tightening tonnage, <a href="https://www.spglobal.com/platts/en/market-insights/latest-news/oil/032421-suez-canal-blockage-sends-ripples-through-global-commodity-markets#article1">shipping sources told the ratings firm</a>.<br /><br /><strong>All of this will trickle down to the common folk</strong>    <div type="image" title="Suez Canal" height="720" width="1280" msid="81708620" hostid="261"></div>Add to that, when crude oil tankers, for example, don’t reach their destination on time, the price of fuel like petrol and diesel go up. The same goes for natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) that is used in cooking gas cylinders.And this blockade is not going away in a hurry. The Suez Canal may remain blocked for at least a few more weeks, which means 10% of the global sea trade has to either wait or look for alternative routes that may increase the cost of transportation. <br /><br /><br />One way or another, this will trigger an increase in price for essential products like food and fuel. Insider could not independently confirm her identity. </li></ul><p>As nationwide protests in response to the killing of George Floyd have intensified, social media users are receiving backlash for self-promotional behavior and stunts capitalizing on the somber historical moment. </p><p>On Monday, Twitter user <a href="https://twitter.com/ewufortheloss">@ewufortheloss</a> posted a video of a woman borrowing a drill from a construction worker boarding up a storefront in Santa Monica. After posing for a photo with the drill in front of the store, the woman thanked the construction worker — and then she and her photographer proceeded to step into a black Mercedes-Benz and drive away.</p><p>"Good job, guys! BLM," an onlooker can be heard saying in the background. </p><p>"This lady stopped someone boarding up a store in Santa Monica so she could hold the drill for a picture, then drove away," the tweet reads. "Please don't do this."</p><p>"The problem here is that she's 1) using this terrible situation to promote herself instead of the man who's actually helping and 2) completely insensitive to racial / class tensions," the Twitter user wrote in a <a href="https://twitter.com/ewufortheloss/status/1267552567732527105">follow-up thread</a>. "Influencers: use your platform for ACTUAL good, not the PERCEPTION of good."</p><p>The video quickly racked up over 15 million views and spurred outrage among viewers disturbed by "<a href="https://twitter.com/BitzOfFitz/status/1267634372695298048">performative activism</a>." </p><p>"wow, that's vile," Walter Shaub, the former Director of the United States Office of Government Ethics, <a href="https://twitter.com/waltshaub/status/1267629882869198848">commented</a> on the video. </p><p>"And notice that she's pretending to be part of the clean up crew. Not the protest," another <a href="https://twitter.com/RojobelaJojo/status/1267549635494572032">wrote</a>. I wonder what her caption will be."</p><p>Filmmaker and director Ava DuVernay <a href="https://twitter.com/ava/status/1267652412052959232">reposted</a> the video, writing, "You know what? I'm... I think I'm gonna put Twitter away for a few minutes before I throw this phone across the room." </p><p>The tweet has received over 100,000 likes and comments from celebrities and activist organizations alike. </p><p>"Omg," actress Debra Messing commented on the video. </p><p>"So utterly awed by this," the official Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services  (RAICES) Twitter account <a href="https://twitter.com/RAICESTEXAS/status/1267850992240021504">wrote</a>. "Influencer <keyword id="24504" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="culture">culture</keyword> at its worst."</p><p>The original poster <a href="https://twitter.com/ewufortheloss/status/1267629760697397248">asked</a> commenters not to "doxx" or release the personal information of the woman in the video — although their attempts at discouraging investigation went largely ignored. </p><p>"Let's use this as something that helps us understand what's right and what's wrong, rather than an opportunity to brand someone for life," they <a href="https://twitter.com/ewufortheloss/status/1267629760697397248">wrote</a> in the thread. </p><p>Commenters, however, were determined to uncover the woman's identity, with one Twitter user <a href="https://twitter.com/GlassLookings/status/1267574880343453696">writing</a>, "Whats her IG? We got work to do."</p><p> New York Times technology reporter Taylor Lorenz <a href="https://twitter.com/TaylorLorenz/status/1267681994198126592">identified</a> the woman as Fiona Moriarty-McLaughlin, whose Twitter bio described her as a "Commentary" journalist with the Washington Examiner and former employee Billboard and The Hollywood Reporter. Several other commenters, some of whom claimed to know the woman pictured, identified Moriarty-McLaughlin and tagged the Washington Examiner in their tweets.</p><p>The woman's identity has not been independently verified by Insider, and Fiona Moriarty-McLaughlin did not respond to Insider's request for comment. </p><p>Since the video went viral, Moriarty-McLaughlin's Twitter profile appears to have been <a href="https://twitter.com/factswithfiona">deleted</a> and her Instagram has been set to private.</p><p>Some people claiming to be <a href="https://twitter.com/MaryCruz2028/status/1267709961783525377">acquaintances</a> of the woman in the video weighed in on the controversy in the comments section. <strong> </strong></p><p>"She attended the same high school as me and theater program in Santa Monica," one commenter wrote. "Personality wise she was not the nicest person. A woman is being criticized online for 'performative activism' after posing with a drill in front of a boarded-up storefront amid LA protests

<p>Reynolds American, the parents company of cigarette brands such as Camel, Pall Mall, and Newport, is sinking in trading on Wednesday after the firm missed on earnings and announced its CEO is stepping down.</p><p>The tobacco company announced earnings of $0.61 per share against analyst expectations of $0.64. Grace Eline</h3><p>Grace Eline is a 9 year old who was diagnosed with a germ-cell brain tumor and began treatment in May of 2018. She "recently finished chemotherapy and today shows no evidence of the disease," the White House said in its statement. "She is determined to help other children who are fighting cancer."</p><p>Grace is described by the White House as a special girl, who in lieu of birthday gifts donated to charity. She tried to bring a smile to others in the hospital.</p><h3>4. Ashley Evans</h3><p>Ashley Evans has been in recovery from opioid and substance abuse for nearly one year and one month (that milestone will be reached on February 9) - spurred by the birth of her daughter, who she will be reunited with, soon.</p><p>"Ashley has persevered and overcome many obstacles to maintain her sobriety," the White House said. "She is passionate about sharing her story of hope."</p><h3>5. Elvin Hernandez</h3><p>Elvin Hernandez is a special agent in the Department of Homeland Security's Trafficking in Persons Unit, according to the White House. During his 7-year assignment he "conducted numerous successful international human trafficking investigations involving transnational organized crime groups."</p><h3>6. Roy James</h3><p>Roy James is the Plant Manager of the Vicksburg Forest Products lumber facility, where he had worked for 26 years, before the plant closed. "Thankfully, last year, Vicksburg was designated an Opportunity Zone through provisions in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act," according to the White House. "The plant soon reopened and Roy was hired to oversee the entire facility."</p><h3>7. Alice Johnson</h3><p>Alice Johnson was granted clemency by President Trump on June 6, 2018. She had been "serving a mandatory life sentence without parole for charges associated with a nonviolent drug case," according to the White House. She is now dedicated to criminal justice reform.</p><h3>8. Timothy Matson</h3><p>Timothy Matson is a Pittsburgh Police Department member of the SWAT team. "In October 2018, Tim responded to the mass shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue," the White House said. "He suffered multiple gunshot wounds and saved countless lives in that heinous, anti-Semitic attack."</p><h3>9. Judah Samet</h3><p>Judah Samet is both a Holocaust survivor and a survivor of the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, which left 11 congregants dead.</p><h3>10. Joshua Trump</h3><p>Sixth grader Joshua Trump loves animals and his uncle serving in the US Air Force. "Unfortunately, Joshua has been bullied in school due to his last name," the White House said in its statement. "He is thankful to the first lady and the Trump family for their support."</p><h3>11. Tom Wibberley</h3><p>Tom Wibberley is the father of Navy Seaman Craig Wibberley, who along with 16 other crew members, was killed on the USS Cole on October 12, 2000, in a terrorist attack. "After Craig's death, a scholarship fund was created that gives out four $1,000 scholarships each year to students studying computer science," according to the White House. <p>While he said he was fine with the way the show ended and believes the cast and crew "did a good job" he shared that his ending for the show would have been much different. </p>
<p>And it wouldn't have involved Michael C. Hall becoming a lumberjack.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"In the very last scene of the series, Dexter wakes up. And everybody is going to think, 'Oh, it was a dream.' And then the camera pulls back and back and back and then we realize, 'No, it's not a dream.' Dexter's opening his eyes and he's on the execution table at the Florida Penitentiary. They're just starting to administer the drugs and he looks out through the window to the observation gallery.<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
