New Delhi, June 18 (IANS) Leading smartphone brand Xiaomi grabbed 27 per cent market share of the India smart TV market in the first quarter this year, followed by LG at distant 14 per cent and Samsung at 10 per cent, according to a new report. Sony with 9 per cent and TCL with 8 per cent were at fourth and fifth position in Q1 2020, according to Counterpoint Research. Chinese brands are already dominating the smartphone market in China and India. "Smartphone makers are leveraging brand recognition that they already have in the market and they have enough technical expertise to develop a product like smart TV. So, the entry barrier in the smart TV market is really low for smartphone companies," said Debasish Jana, Research Associate at Counterpoint. Smartphone makers are specifically going into the smart TV business and targeting mostly the Asian market where the smart TV category is less mature than the North American and European market. Xiaomi got the early mover advantage and grabbed a 7 per cent share in the smart TV market globally. After the success of Xiaomi in the Asian market, especially in China and India, other smartphone makers entered the market with a special focus on those two countries. "Although Motorola and Nokia have launched the products only in India to exploit the opportunity in the booming India smart TV market  it is unlikely they will expand to other markets soon. In China, Huawei launched smart TVs running on its Harmony OS under both Huawei and Honor brands," informed Jana. Most of these brands tapped into a market where consumers are buying a smart TV for the first time. They are offering a tailored and feature-rich product to the consumer at an affordable price point. By contrast, OnePlus is differentiating itself by launching a premium smart TV. However, OnePlus has announced that it will expand its Smart TV portfolio in India with the launch of two new affordable sets via an online event on July 2. "Realme will likely intensify competition in the affordable smart TV segment with its newly launched smart TV range," Jana noted. Realme has launched affordable Smart TVs that starts from Rs 12,999 and is now geared up to launch a 55-inch TV. While Chinese smartphone brands are aggressive in the Asian smart TV market, Indian and Japanese TV brands still have a fair chance to increase the share in Asia, especially in the Indian market. The Indian smart TV market is poised to grow as the Internet is penetrating at a faster pace and OTT consumption is growing. Recently, VU is doing well in India with its wide range of smart TVs. Brands like Kodak and Thomson are technically licensed to Indian EMS, Super Plastronics, and are also performing quite well. Traditional TV brands, such as Samsung, LG and Sony, still have enough brand recognition around the world while new smartphone players are appealing to millennials who are familiar with these brands. "A lot will depend on the positioning for the brands. Moreover, most of the Chinese brands are playing in the affordable segment; the premium segment contains few brands," said Jana.

About 4.5 million televisions were shipped to <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> in the first half of 2023 with an increase of 8 per cent on a yearly basis. According to a report by International Data Corporation (<keyword id="6377157" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="idc" source="Orion">IDC</keyword>), frequent sales by e-tailers, multiple new launches, and clearing of old inventory before the festive season starts, fuelled the growth. IDC expects 2023 to remain flat or register single-digit growth led by the upcoming festive season. A plethora of offers or discounts are expected to ensure a healthy second half of the year. Share of the online channel grew by 25 per cent in 2023 year-on-year reaching 39 per cent driven by online sales festivals, the global market intelligence and advisory services provider IDC said in the report. "Due to decreasing prices, consumers are opting to buy an affordable smart TV instead of retrofitting non-smart TV with a streaming stick, which is losing popularity, its shipments declining by 85 per cent in 1H23," said <keyword id="3886166" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="upasana-joshi" source="Orion">Upasana Joshi</keyword>, Research Manager, Client Devices, IDC India. While the popular screen sizes of 32-inch and 43-inch remain mainstream with 71 per cent collective share, the larger screens are gaining popularity. Share of the 55-inch, according to IDC, went up to 12 per cent from 9 per cent a year ago, resulting in 35 per cent YoY growth in the USD 400+ price segment. In the first half of 2023, the average selling price of smart TVs stood at USD 380, a 3 per decline from last year. IDC said brands are focusing on low-priced models in the budget segment with regular price drops. "Apart from core features, visual aesthetics like narrow bezel or bezel-less TVs in the affordable price segments and features like HDR, better DCI-P3 coverage, Dolby certification, improved sound output etc. are in demand," says <keyword id="5792358" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="debasish-jana" source="Orion">Debasish Jana</keyword>, Market Analyst, Smart Home Devices, IDC India. In 2022, 9.8 million units were shipped to India with a 7 per cent yearly growth, with the normalization of panel prices resulting in reduced end-consumer prices. India smart TV market grew 8% in first half of 2023

New Delhi, Mar 17 () Shipments of TVs in the Indian market grew by 15 per cent to 15 million units in 2019, which is the highest-ever, according to a report by Counterpoint Research. The growth was driven mainly by budget smart TVs with 32-inch screen size in the sub-USD 150 price band, it added. Though Korean electronics major Samsung continues to lead the overall TV market, the emerging smart TV segment is being cornered by the newer players such as Xiaomi and TCL, the research firm said. Xiaomi is now the leader in the smart TV segment with 40 per cent growth in 2019, Counterpoint said in its latest analysis on the Indian TV market. "Samsung continues to lead the overall TV market but the emerging smart TV segment is being cornered by the newer players," the firm's Research Analyst Debasish Jana said. "Smart TV was the fastest-growing segment up 25 per cent YoY. The smart TV market in India was mostly driven by brands like Xiaomi, Samsung and emerging tail brands such as TCL, Vu and others, which are leveraging their growing channel presence both online and offline to target the new users and upgrade users," he said. Brands like Xiaomi, TCL and VU have been expanding over the last few years taking on market leaders as Samsung. LG, Sony, and Panasonic, Jana said. Popular brands like Samsung, LG and Sony are experiencing a decrease in their non-smart TV business, while small brands such as BPL, Sansui and others are still banking on the non-smart TV segment that mainly caters to the rural market, B2B segment or a second bedroom TV in many cases. According to Senior Analyst Karn Chauhan, India is one of the largest markets in the world with more than 200 million potential TV households and it is still under-penetrated which makes it a more attractive growth market. "Though affordability and value for money are the key growth drivers. The new crop of brands such as Xiaomi, TCL and others are tapping their existing relationships with e-commerce channels such as Flipkart, Amazon, etc to successfully distribute the TVs affordably with a direct-to-consumer model," he said. According to the report, LED TVs still account for more than 90 per cent of the market in India, while rest are from OLED and QLED TV segment. "LG's share has taken a hit due to lower than expected performance in the non-smart TV market," said report. While Sony's overall TV shipments declined 14 per cent, smart TVs on the other hand helped it to post 3 per cent annual growth. "TCL made 110 per cent YoY growth this year. Its smart TV business grew even more with a 186 per cent YoY increase, thanks to its affordable smart TV," it said.
