But one of them crashed and killed its pilot, underscoring how even the missions initially thought to be of relatively lower risk are still dangerous."Flying fighters is a dangerous pursuit even in any situation," Vincent Aiello, a former US naval aviator who, in addition to flying F/A-18s, also flew the F-16 during his military career, told Business Insider.Ukraine debut its F-16s to the world in early August after a yearslong wait for the combat-proven jets. He said that, instead, they would strengthen Kyiv's air defenses.That's exactly what the fighter jets did on August 26, providing an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraines-f16-jets-shot-down-missiles-during-massive-russian-strike-2024-8">extra defensive boost</a> for Ukraine as Russia attacked the country with hundreds of missiles and drones in what was said to be the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russian-attack-ukraine-shows-black-sea-fleet-dangerous-despite-losses-2024-8">largest aerial bombardment</a> of the war.Days later, Ukraine acknowledged <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-suffered-f-16-loss-jet-crashed-killed-pilot-2024-8">one of its F-16s crashed</a>, killing its pilot, while battling Russian missiles during the attack. These include both Western and Soviet-era ground-based air-defense systems and fighter aircraft like the F-16.Mike Torrealday, a retired US Air Force colonel who flew combat operations in the Middle East with the F-16, said air defense is a "very delicate dance to execute."Attempting to intercept incoming missiles and drones means that the pilots have to shoot at the threats, carefully maneuver the aircraft, and ensure that they're not crossing into areas where they could be at risk of friendly fire. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Iran is believed to have weaponized pharmaceutical agents to kill or incapacitate.</li><li>These chemical weapons affect a victim's central nervous system.</li></ul>Iran has developed <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nerve-agents-chemical-weapons-how-they-work-2018-3">chemical weapons</a> based on synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, warns a US expert, powerful agents that could incapacitate soldiers or civilians when added to grenades or artillery.Pharmaceutical-based agents, or PBA, are essentially weaponized medicines that incapacitate or kill their victims depending on the exposure. Iran may have given PBA to its proxies such as <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-is-naim-qassem-longtime-deputy-now-leading-hezbollah-2024-10">Hezbollah</a>, which could use them to kidnap Israeli troops and civilians."At a time of growing regional instability in the Middle East, largely the result of the militancy of Iranian proxies, the threats posed by Iran's weaponized PBA program can no longer be overlooked," wrote Matthew Levitt in an <a target="_blank" href="https://ctc.westpoint.edu/tehrans-tactical-knockout-weaponized-pharmaceutical-based-agents/">article</a> for the Combatting Terrorism Center at West Point.The U.S. Government Accountability Office defines PBAs as "chemicals based on pharmaceutical compounds, which may or may not have legitimate medical uses, and can cause severe illness or death when misused." They include opioids such as fentanyl and tranquilizers for animals.These drugs affect a victim's central nervous system. "Once inhaled, these agents cause victims to lose full consciousness and enable the forces deploying them to advance quickly and quietly and/or take captive the unconscious victims," Levitt wrote.Iran was a victim of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-uses-chemical-weapons-against-ukraine-cause-panic-war-report-2024-4">chemical warfare</a> during the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s, when Iraqi chemical attacks — including <a target="_blank" href="https://thebulletin.org/2024/07/iraq-once-devasted-iran-with-chemical-weapons-as-the-world-stood-by-governments-still-struggle-to-respond-to-chemical-warfare/">nerve gases</a> such as Sarin, and mustard gas — contributed to as many as 1 million Iranian casualties. But Iran employed its own mustard gas on a few occasions during the war. Israel believes Iran used PBAs against rebels in the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/drones-usher-in-a-brutal-new-phase-syrian-civil-war-2024-3">Syrian Civil War</a>, while there are reports that pro-Iranian militias in Iraq may have unleashed them against anti-government protestors."The problem is that Iran is right when they said they've been victims of chemical weapons in terrible ways during the Iran-Iraq war," Levitt, a senior fellow at the Washington Institute think tank, told Business Insider. "But the reality is they themselves have been using these as well."The US and its allies have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.elysee.fr/admin/upload/default/0001/05/2ffa826926cd72354b90a05f7de765bfcc9908b6.pdf">warned</a> for years that Iran is developing pharmaceutical-based weapons in breach of the 1997 Chemical Weapons Convention, which bans the manufacture and use of "toxic chemicals," defined as "chemical action on life processes [that] can cause death, temporary incapacitation or permanent harm to humans or animals." Treaty signatories — including Iran — are obligated to destroy existing stockpiles.Still, evidence suggests Iran is pursuing PBAs. "In 2014, Iran's Chemistry Department of IHU [Imam Hossein University] sought kilogram quantities of medetomidine — a [veterinary] sedative it has researched as an aerosolized incapacitant — from Chinese exporters, according to a 2023 US State Department's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.state.gov/2023-condition-10c-annual-report-on-compliance-with-the-chemical-weapons-convention-cwc/">report</a>. "The Chemistry Department has little history of veterinary or even medical research, and the quantities sought (over 10,000 effective doses) were inconsistent with the reported end use of research."In September 2023, Iranian anti-government hackers "posted confidential documents detailing an Iranian military university's development of grenades meant to disseminate medetomidine," the State Department said.Of particular concern were references in Iranian literature to the 2002 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.history.com/news/opioid-chemical-weapons-moscow-theater-hostage-crisis">Dubrovka incident</a>, when Russian security forces pumped pharmaceutical-based gas — probably fentanyl or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.dea.gov/sites/default/files/2018-07/hq092216_attach.pdf">carfentanyl</a>, another synthetic opioid vastly more potent — into a crowded Moscow theater to subdue Chechen rebels who had taken almost a thousand hostages. Commandos then stormed the building and killed the incapacitated rebels — but the gas also killed more than 130 hostages.Yet restricting PBAs is difficult because they overlap with products used for legitimate law enforcement and medical purposes. For example, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.vox.com/2020/6/3/21277995/police-tear-gas-protests-history-effects-violence">tear gas</a> has been used by law enforcement as a riot control agent since the First World War, while US troops used it in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.thenmusa.org/articles/tunnel-rats-of-the-vietnam-war/">Vietnam War</a> to smoke out enemy tunnels. Tear gas is still legal when employed for riot control, but not as a battlefield weapon.Stopping nations from manufacturing PBAs is " very, very difficult, which is why you've seen such a focus on diplomatic efforts, sanctions and some law enforcement actions," said Levitt.Iranian PBAs are a particular problem if Tehran has supplied them to proxies such as Hezbollah. "Deploying weapons produced with dual-use items, and then providing said weapons to proxies, provides Iran with multiple layers of cover and reasonable deniability for having done so at all," the CTC article noted.Israel feared that Hezbollah would use PBA weapons as part of an alleged plan to seize the Galilee region of northern Israel and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gaza-israels-special-forces-rescue-woman-on-a-motorbike-hostage-and-3-others-2024-6">kidnap Israeli citizens</a>. "Maybe you just use them to incapacitate the border guards and reach the now unprotected civilians," Levitt said. "Or, you actually target and incapacitate the soldiers so you can kidnap or capture them."Israel's recent military <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/israel-launches-ground-offensive-into-lebanon-destroy-hezbollah-targets-2024-9">offensives in Lebanon</a> have badly hurt Hezbollah, including its huge arsenal of missiles. But PBAs can be added to hand grenades and mortar shells, of which Hezbollah still has ample stocks. And there remains a possibility that US forces could clash with Iran and its allies and encounter pharmaceutical-based agents. (The US, in contrast, completed the destruction of its chemical weapons in 2023.)However, Levitt emphasizes that PBAs are not in the same league as <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rangers-are-training-to-neutralize-enemy-nuclear-sites-2024-11">weapons of mass destruction</a> such as nerve gas, which is potent enough to kill widely across exposure areas. "This is not a strategic threat. It is a tactical weapon."Nonetheless, chemical weapons do have a frightening aura, even if fentanyl gas is nowhere near as deadly as nerve gas. Witnesses say this tension culminated in a confrontation with two women, identified as "L" and "R," whom Payne had allegedly contacted via an escort app. In a heated encounter, the women reportedly demanded $5,000 from Payne, which led to an argument that spilled into the hotel lobby. The hotel manager attempted to de-escalate the situation by calling the Argentine businessman, who was said to be a friend of Payne. This businessman, however, now faces a charge of "abandonment of a person" for allegedly failing to notify Payne’s family about his worsening state or alerting authorities after his death. Although he has cooperated with police only through his lawyer, he has not been detained. They have gathered critical evidence, including nine mobile phones, computers, hard drives, and a jar of marijuana, which they believe may hold clues to what truly happened. One of the nine locations raided was the rented room of "L," who had reportedly spent time in Payne's hotel room before the fatal incident. However, after briefly speaking with authorities, she disappeared, adding another layer of mystery to the case. Neighbours reported hearing a dog barking from her now-vacant room, and police are actively searching for her. As the investigation deepens, Payne’s family is preparing for his body’s return to the UK, where they will lay him to rest. According to a new study, being more active could be the key to unlocking a longer, healthier life — especially for those over 40. <h3 style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:14pt;margin-bottom:4pt;">5 extra years, just by moving more</h3>The study revealed that if everyone in the U.S. were as active as the top 25% of the population, individuals over 40 could add five years to their lives. The secret? <keyword id="20053428" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="physical-activity" source="keywords">Physical activity</keyword>. Researchers discovered this by using accelerometers — devices that track movement with precision — rather than relying on self-reported activity levels. The result are that the benefits of exercise are twice as strong as previously thought. <h3 style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:14pt;margin-bottom:4pt;">Risk of death drops by 73%</h3>The most active quarter of the population had a whopping 73% lower risk of death than the least active group. But here’s where it gets exciting: for the least active group, even a small step (literally) makes a huge difference. For example, just a one-hour walk could give you six additional hours of life. Think of it as trading one Netflix binge for a half-day extension on your lifespan! <h3 style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:14pt;margin-bottom:4pt;">The biggest gains for the least active</h3>Lead researcher Professor Lennert Veerman highlighted the potential for the least active group: “If the least active quartile of the population over age 40 were to increase their activity level to that of the most active quartile, they might live, on average, about 11 years longer,” he said. Here’s the best part — it’s doable. The most active group isn’t climbing mountains or running marathons. Their activity level is equivalent to just under three hours of walking per day, proving that even moderate movement can pay off big. Low levels of physical activity could be as damaging as smoking, the researchers suggested. Just as each cigarette can shave off 11 minutes of life, inactivity has its toll. Conversely, moving more acts as a shield, helping prevent heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, and other chronic conditions. <h3 style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:14pt;margin-bottom:4pt;">Revolusionising health recommendations</h3>The study’s findings indicate a need to revisit national guidelines on physical activity. Dr. Veerman emphasised how underestimated physical movement has been: “If there's something you could do to more than halve your risk of death, physical activity is enormously powerful,” he said. He also stressed the importance of creating environments that encourage movement: walkable neighbourhoods, affordable public transport, and spaces for cycling could benefit individuals and society alike by boosting health outcomes and reducing strain on healthcare systems. Medical boards such as the WHO and the ICMR advise adults to engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week, alongside muscle-strengthening exercises twice a week. Children and teens should aim for 60 minutes of daily physical activity, including muscle and bone-strengthening activities three times a week. Older adults are encouraged to follow similar guidelines with added focus on balance and flexibility exercises to prevent falls. The government promotes physical activity through initiatives like the <keyword id="20284979" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fit-India-Movement" source="keywords">Fit India Movement</keyword>, though experts emphasise the need for better access to parks, sidewalks, and fitness programs to make exercise more achievable for all. Don’t worry — you don’t need to leap into intense workouts. Even modest increases in activity can yield significant results. A short walk, an evening dance, or even taking the stairs instead of the elevator could be your ticket to a longer, healthier life. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Some observers have argued surprise attacks are nearly impossible due to wide surveillance.</li><li>Ukraine's Kursk invasion caught Russia by surprise and followed time-honored tactics.</li></ul>When Ukraine unleashed its Kursk offensive in August, it wasn't just the Russians who were surprised.Some experts had argued that large-scale attacks were no longer possible in modern warfare. Any attempt to mass forces for a penetration would be quickly detected by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/israel-drone-footage-yahya-sinwar-final-moments-how-far-drones-2024-10">drones</a>, spyplanes or satellites, the thinking went, enabling the defender to reinforce his defenses."The proliferation of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in the Ukraine-Russia war has created a transparent battlefield marked by near-persistent surveillance, making operational surprise difficult to achieve," according to a <a target="_blank" href="https://oe.tradoc.army.mil/2024/09/19/how-ukraine-overcame-the-transparent-battlefield-to-achieve-operational-surprise-in-kursk/">blog</a> by the US Army's Training and Doctrine Command.But despite hordes of Russian drones keeping an eagle eye for Ukrainian movements, Ukraine managed to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.newsweek.com/ukraine-kursk-offensive-500-square-miles-russia-kyiv-1944894">concentrate its best brigades</a> for an attack that stunned the Kremlin and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-seized-nyc-sized-area-russia-lightning-offensive-photos-2024-8">seized</a> 500 square miles at the height of the offensive.How did Ukraine do it? By using the same time-honored techniques that Germany employed in its surprise attack at the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.army.mil/botb/">Battle of the Bulge</a> in December 1944.First came careful preparation by identifying weak spots in Russian defenses. By massing forces for offensives in eastern Ukraine, this thinned out the rest of the 600-mile front line, including the Kursk region. Open-source intelligence "indicates that up to 75 percent of Russia's ground forces, airborne units, and naval infantry are deployed in or near eastern Ukraine," TRADOC noted. And because Russian drones and other ISR — intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance — systems were concentrated in areas where Russia was on the attack, this meant lighter coverage of Kursk.Similarly, in late 1944 — even as Germany was reeling from massive defeats in Normandy and by an advancing Russia on the Eastern Front— Hitler and his top advisers identified the Ardennes region of Belgium as a weak spot in the center of the Allied lines. While American and British forces were concentrated to the north and south for a final offensive into Germany, the Allies considered the hilly, wooded terrain of the Ardennes a quiet sector safe to defend with a few depleted or inexperienced divisions. The heavy forests could serve as cover for the German infantry and Panzer armored forces as they advanced.Before its August assault, the Ukrainian high command also took care to keep words of the operation to as few people as possible. "Once intelligence was collected and analyzed, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, led the planning with only a few senior officers in attendance," TRADOC said. "The planning sessions were likely conducted face-to-face to prevent the risk of Russian cyber actors or signals intelligence from discovering the plan. Press interviews with Ukrainian soldiers indicate that the incursion forces were not notified until hours before the operation."To conceal its preparations, Ukraine also resorted to disinformation, such as spreading the word that the Ukrainian army <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-wont-be-able-launch-new-offensive-year-nato-official-2024-7">wouldn't be capable</a> of launching an offensive before spring 2025. Ukrainian troops were unwitting parts of the deception. For example, "Ukraine's military announced the 61st Mechanized Brigade would be moving to Vovchansk, a city in the northern sector of the fighting in eastern Ukraine," said TRADOC. "Even after the 61st was told they would go into Russia, senior officers in the unit thought it was a bluff."Likewise, knowledge of the Ardennes offensive — codenamed Operation Wacht am Rhein — was confined to a small circle of officers sworn to secrecy upon pain of death. Allied cryptographers had broken high-level German radio codes (the "Ultra" program), but German forces employed radio silence, and orders were conveyed by courier and telephone. Even the name Wacht am Rhein ("Watch on the Rhine") was meant to convince Allied intelligence that it was a defensive plan to stop an Allied crossing of the Rhine River into Germany.Ukraine prepped its offensive by blinding Russian ISR with strikes on Russian airfields, as well as using Ukrainian drones to destroy Russian UAVs. To delay a Russian response, Ukraine used rockets, drones and artillery-delivered mines against airbases and command and control centers, as well as interdicting Russian reinforcements.This too echoed Nazi Germany's final offensive. It had timed the Ardennes operation to coincide with a long spell of bad weather, which grounded Allied reconnaissance planes. On the misty dawn of Dec. 16, 1944, a massive German artillery barrage disrupted American communications, while <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nationalww2museum.org/war/articles/operation-greif-secret-mission-sow-chaos-us-army">German commandos</a> — dressed in American uniforms — infiltrated US lines to spread confusion and panic.The question for Ukraine is whether its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/battle-of-kursk-ukraine-russia-railroad-2024-9">Kursk operation</a> will fare better than the Bulge. Instead of a breakthrough that changed the tide of World War II, the German offensive eventually bogged down because of poor terrain, lack of fuel and fierce American resistance.While seizing some Russian territory and creating dismay in Moscow, Ukraine's offensive has failed to divert Russian forces from eastern Ukraine, and Russian counterattacks are shrinking the Ukrainian salient.Nonetheless, Ukraine has shown that surprise attacks are possible even in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/armies-need-their-own-drone-air-force-flown-by-specialists-study-says-2024-5">Drone Age</a>. I wasn't scared as I don't have a business to worry about and live on the fifth floor of my building.But I was and still am worried about those affected and the innocent lives being lost. By the time the alerts came, the storm had already hit.<h2 id="ca3c0d9a-c56b-47b5-a2d6-569f84ce2140">Back to the Middle Ages</h2>The next day, a friend and I biked to see the damage in southern Valencia, the area most affected by the storm.The metropolitan transport system had collapsed, the subways were flooded, and the buses could not access some areas.Before even reaching the area, we saw trucks and cars crowded on the road south of the river alike fallen dominoes.<div type="image" title="Cars left thrown on top of each other after a storm struck Valencia, Spain, in a picture taken on October 30, 2024." height="1200" width="1600" msid="114856601" hostid="261" sizebytes="43580"></div>The streets were full of dirt, covered with mud and water. Some have garages full of water and mud that they are cleaning. But that did not happen in Valencia.<h2 id="24b81fb8-4f22-4359-a97e-6f0760015239">Worse than Hurricane Milton</h2>I remember watching the news of Hurricane Milton hitting Florida last month and how Floridians were preparing for it.Residents boarded up their windows with large wooden panels; store owners were getting ready for it, and people evacuated.The Tampa mayor even urged people to leave and said that anyone who stayed would die.After Hurricane Milton, there <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ce3zdg2wlvqo#:~:text=One%20of%20at%20least%20a,died%20across%20the%20US%20state.">were at least 16 deaths.</a> Meanwhile, here in Valencia, it's already about 10 times as many.The Spanish Meteorological Agency had issued an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.antena3.com/noticias/el-tiempo/actualidad/dana-valencia-que-pasaron-mas-10-horas-alerta-aemet-aviso-moviles-alert_20241031672370a3d058410001ca758c.html">alert days before</a> the storm. But on Tuesday, nothing happened. There was absolute calm in the morning. People were going to work and to university. When the local alerts came, the storm was already happening.<h2 id="27ab23b6-b666-4dce-ada9-fd22df28f8fa">A wake-up call</h2>Undoubtedly, human errors were made. I've never seen anything like it.In a country like Spain, with the means, agencies, and intelligence we have, it is horrible that this happened.At a certain point, authorities were saying 50 dead, then 60, then 70, then 90. To me, that doesn't sound like much. I believe that when the waters recede and the mud clears, more dead bodies will be found.

I live in Valencia, Spain, where flooding has taken over 100 lives. I can hardly believe what's happened here.
