The "WHO South-East Asia Regional Status Report on <keyword id="20187029" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="road-safety" source="keywords">Road Safety</keyword>" was launched during "Safety 2024", the 15th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion, 2024. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), globally, 30% of reported road traffic deaths involved users of powered two- and three-wheelers. Occupants of four-wheeled vehicles make up 25% of the deaths and pedestrians account for 21 %. Cyclists represent 5% of the deaths. The remaining 20% include occupants of large vehicles, heavy goods vehicles, and other or unknown user types. "In the WHO Southeast Asia Region, the share of reported road traffic deaths is 46% for users of powered two- and three-wheelers, 12 for occupants of four-wheeled vehicles, 17% for pedestrians, 3% for cyclists and 22% for others. In all these countries, vulnerable road users (pedestrians, motorised two-wheeler users and bicyclists) constitute 66% of the total reported road traffic deaths," the report said. "Drivers or riders of two and three-wheelers constitute the highest proportion among all road user categories in India (45.1%), Maldives (100 %), Myanmar (47%) and Thailand (51.4%)," it added. The WHO noted that no country in the South Asian region had achieved the target of reducing its estimated road traffic deaths by 50 %. However, considerable reduction in the WHO's estimated road traffic deaths occurred in the Maldives and Thailand, where estimated road traffic deaths decreased by 46.2% and 41.7 %, respectively. On the contrary, reported road traffic deaths in the region increased by 15 % in the 2010-2021 period. At the country level, no member state of the Southeast Asia Region with more than 10 million population has reported a decrease in road traffic deaths during this period. "However, it should be noted that the reported number of road traffic deaths in Thailand reduced by 22.9% between 2016 and 2021. The estimated road traffic deaths too increased in Bangladesh, India and Nepal during the period 2010-2021 by 23 %, 2% and 25%, respectively," the report said. Etienne Krug, director of the WHO's Department for Social Determinants of Health, said road traffic crashes were a major crisis of the 21st century. "...a large proportion of people who die in road crashes are those who cannot afford to buy a car. This is urgent time to take action. The report reveals that the crisis is huge but we need to understand and act with determination that prevention is possible and needs strict enforcement," he said. The three-day conference is being hosted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi; George Institute for Global Health in collaboration with the All India Institute for Medical Sciences (AIIMS), National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) and co-sponsored by WHO. "To reduce inequities, we must acknowledge that injuries disproportionately impact vulnerable communities -- because we are far behind in addressing real problems with real solutions. Lived experience shows how policy shapes differential exposure, risk, and outcomes, underscoring the urgent need for change," said Jagnoor Jagnoor, head of injury division at George Institute for Global Health. During the conference, the international experts are uniting with a shared goal of "building a safer future for all: Equitable and sustainable strategies for injury and violence prevention". Pedestrians, cyclists, two-wheeler riders constitute 66% of road fatalities in Southeast Asia, says a WHO report

He said several of his passengers faced flooding and destruction from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hurricane-helene-milton-tampa-florida-desantis-clean-disaster-dangerous-2024-10">Hurricane Helene</a> two weeks prior and were scrambling to return to their routines. Many brought their pets with them. His home is without power, and driving is his only source of income. However, his car only has three miles of gas left, and each day without earnings is stressful, he said.Many of his rides over the last few days were headaches — one paid $5.36 for a 16-minute ride, which he said compares to the amount he'd expect to make for a similar journey, while another was elongated because of closed exits. He rejected a 113.5-mile ride from Clearwater to Orlando because the estimated payout was $84.31 with a bonus, far less than what's standard, he said. They added that service has been restored in these metro areas but remains suspended along the most heavily impacted barrier islands.Additionally, the spokesperson told Business Insider the company worked closely with state officials in Florida over the past few weeks to assess the situation posed by the hurricanes and partnered with the Florida Division of Emergency Management to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mypanhandle.com/weather/hurricane-helene/uber-offers-free-rides-to-shelters-for-floridians/">provide</a> some people with free transportation to shelters.Lyft did not respond to Business Insider's request for comment or questions regarding whether the app also suspended service during the storm.<h2 id="928e9756-39a3-4d0c-ae87-72a989030640">The evacuation process was "stressful"</h2>Drivers across the state recalled panicked passengers, fallen trees blocking roads, and lengthy gas station lines on October 10 and 11.Trent T., 50, drives independently for his own transportation company and for Uber and Lyft in South Florida. He said the tornadoes from Milton were "absolutely insane," and one of his clients' homes was destroyed. He asked to use partial anonymity for fear of professional repercussions.On October 8, Trent said he went to six gas stations before he could find one with inventory and fill up his tank. On the day of the storm, Trent drove passengers fleeing the Tampa Bay area to hotels, noticing that many stores were out of essentials like water. He said hotels in South Florida were mobbed, and he offered his house to anyone evacuating, though no one accepted.Blaine, an Uber driver based in the Tampa area, left his home after learning he was in an evacuation zone. Hotels quickly booked up across the state, but he said he secured a room in Ocala — about a two-hour drive from Tampa.However, there was a mixup with the hotel regarding the night he booked, and his reservation was void. He drove to a hotel in Savannah, Georgia, to seek shelter. The typical five-and-a-half-hour drive from Tampa took eight hours due to traffic, he said."That was stressful," the 57-year-old told BI.<h2 id="f85e7843-407a-45c1-933d-6fe7144dfaae">Drivers are eager to return to their ride-hailing gigs for necessary income</h2>Trent said he can go a few days without consistent rides and their fares but feels for drivers who live paycheck to paycheck. He said the storm could be disastrous for some drivers relying on tourism this time of year, which isn't as high as the city's peak season but still draws crowds looking for warm weather in the fall."If you were in Tampa for instance, and your rent is due this week, and now all of a sudden the storm is coming, you're five days without work," Trent said.It's why some drivers are looking to get back on the road as soon as possible.Yvonne, a part-time <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/driving-uber-lyft-women-drivers-how-make-money-gig-economy-2023-12">Uber and Lyft driver</a> in the Tampa Bay area, uses the extra income from driving to help support her two grandchildren. When the hurricane approached, she said she decided not to leave her home because it wasn't in an evacuation zone. However, the roof of her patio suffered significant damage and she lost power.She hasn't driven for Uber or Lyft since the hurricane hit. Yvonne said the roads aren't conducive to driving because many are flooded or scattered with trees or power lines. However, if the conditions change, she plans to return to her ride-hailing gig by this weekend to start earning money again.Charles P., 44, who drives part-time around Titusville — a city about 40 miles east of Orlando — said there wasn't too much damage on the roads, but he stopped driving for a few days to avoid potentially damaging his vehicle. He's seen a drop in demand and worries that tourism may decline. When he drove on Thursday, he said getting rides was very slow."I usually try to do a certain amount of money per day, but I'm probably down about half of what I normally do in three days," Charles said. Flooded roads, worried passengers, and no income: Florida Uber and Lyft drivers share their experiences on the road before and after Hurricane Milton

The moment marked the first-ever private space walk."There's nothing that's separating you from the vacuum of death other than the single-pane visor," Isaacman told Business Insider.That single-pane visor was part of SpaceX's new extravehicular activity spacesuits — which Isaacman said "essentially becomes your spaceship — that the four-person crew tested out during its nearly <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-polaris-dawn-mission-launch-2024-8">five-day Polaris Dawn mission</a>. In the event that anything went wrong, Isaacman and his crew member, SpaceX engineer <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/polaris-dawn-crew-spacex-commercial-astronauts-first-private-spacewalk-2024-9">Sarah Gillis</a>, only had about two hours of oxygen reserved."Everything in that environment is trying to kill you," Isaacman said. "The radiation, the lack of a habitable atmosphere, there's debris that's traveling at many times the speed of bullets." The hatch was open for 25 minutes, Isaacman said, during which he and Gillis each spent around eight minutes outside the capsule. The time went by quickly, he said, but they were able to complete a test matrix of three suit mobility demonstrations.Isaacman likened looking out into the unknown darkness in space to traveling overseas in the 1400s, when humans may have feared sailing off the end of the Earth or encountering some kind of mythical sea monster.He said being outside the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-elon-musk">SpaceX</a> Dragon capsule felt "very different" than looking through its window, with an intensity of light coming off of Earth that "no video can capture.""You have all these extra senses kind of fusing together and you get, I think, more of an appreciation for just how hostile and unwelcoming Space is," Isaacman said.The spacewalk itself, which occurred at altitudes up to 460 miles above the Earth, went as expected. The Polaris Dawn crew carried out around 38 science and research experiments to test the impact of radiation on the human body, contributing to SpaceX's goal to learn more about long-duration human missions to Mars and beyond."The goal was to learn a lot about the mobility of the suit and was also to learn a lot about thermal regulation of the suit, big temperature swings," Isaacman said.The SpaceX mission, Isaacson's second trip to space with the rocket company cofounded by <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk">Elon Musk</a>, required flying through risky radiation belts.It surpassed NASA's record for the highest Earth orbit and went further into space than humans have traveled since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. The crew also transmitted the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-spacex-polaris-dawn-mission-inside-look-2024-9">first violin performance in space using Starlink</a> technology. In a Netflix docuseries about Isaacman's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-inspiration4-first-space-tourists-return-to-earth-2021-9">first SpaceX mission, Inspiration4</a>, his wife describes worrying about what could go wrong. This time around, with Polaris Dawn, those concerns seemed to improve, Isaacman said."I think my family and my wife, specifically, were much more charged up and enthusiastic than they were the first time," he told BI.Isaacman attributed some of that increased ease to a successful first mission.The team prepped extensively for Polaris Dawn, spending hundreds of hours in pressurized suit testing. The SpaceX suits were tested in a vacuum chamber at NASA's Johnson Space Center, which Isaacman said was important to make sure none of the materials would "create a toxic environment or explode."<div type="image" title="A screenshot of the Polaris Dawn spacesuits" height="1326" width="1476" msid="115290972" hostid="261" sizebytes="21574"></div>Re-entry into Earth's atmosphere, even with the prep and training from SpaceX, remained a point of nervousness. If there is a problematic amount of debris damage to the heat shield or thermal protection systems, there's "no backup plan," Isaacman said.The CEO said that while he and his family recognize the risks, they keep the mindset that it's worth it.<h2 id="03e7aad8-03e7-44a4-8f3c-2af59a1d5fea">He's going back — and expects breakthroughs are 'right around the corner'</h2>Once he landed back on Earth, Isaacman went through about three days of medical tests before largely resuming business as usual.He's been on the road a lot, visiting facilities and doing debriefs, and estimates he's only slept in his bed four or five times since his journey to space.Isaacman has maintained his role as CEO, which he said helps make his work with St. Jude and SpaceX possible. Isaacman funded both Polaris Dawn and his previous mission with SpaceX. The first mission <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://inspiration4.com/">raised</a> over $240 million for St. Jude and was named Inspire4 in an effort to inspire support for the hospital.His time in space isn't over yet though — <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-polaris-dawn-splashdown-mission-advanced-elon-musk-mars-plan-2024-9">the Polaris Program is intended to be three missions</a> mapped out over the next six to nine years, Isaacman said. He said he expects more progress on suit development in the second Polaris mission and the third will be the first crewed flight of SpaceX's Starship, the most powerful rocket system ever built that was designed to realize Musk's dreams of settling Mars.Isaacman shares the SpaceX cofounder's view that humans will be multiplanetary — and he said the technological means to make it possible are "right around the corner." He anticipates <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-spacex-starship-launch-five-huge-deal-space-travel-2024-10">fully reusable Starships becoming a tangible reality</a> within the next decade and launching on a frequent basis, whether it be every week or month. That could lead to all sorts of space-related experimentation including asteroid mining or the establishment of bases on the moon or Mars, Isaacman said.However, the challenges don't end with the formation of an off-world base — you have to ensure the astronauts maintaining it stay alive and sane, he said."Actually having a civilization that can be successful and thrive in space is a much different set of problems," Isaacman said.Roughly half the people who go to space get sick, he said. Following the landing, Isaacman said one of his SpaceX crew members experienced a minor case of spaceflight-associated neuromuscular syndrome, which impacts vision. While the symptoms subsided shortly after, he pointed to it as an example of some of the health risks people face when venturing into space.There's also never been surgery or childbirth in space, and the psychological challenges of living away from Earth, Isaacman said."You're gonna be in a bubble or living in a cave, or underground on Mars for the entire time you're there," Isaacman said. "We'll never get better than that. So there's a lot of things that need to be solved."While humans don't have it quite figured out yet, Isaacman sees a future where humans walk on Mars."We just got to proceed with caution and just make sure we get it right," Isaacman said. "And if we do, we stand to learn so much that can change the course of trajectory of humankind."

Biden is <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/joe-biden-dropping-out-what-happens-next-2024-7">no longer running</a> for reelection, and the political incentives for going after the president — after all, impeachment is a fundamentally political process — have greatly diminished.That's on top of the other road bumps Republicans' monthslong effort has already encountered along the way.Now, the House has just 13 more days left in session before the November election, and Republicans will have to decide whether to follow through with something that many in the GOP base want them to do — but could hurt the swing-district Republicans that are crucial to maintaining the party's majority.The impeachment inquiry, which every House Republican <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/every-house-republican-votes-for-biden-impeachment-inquiry-ken-buck-2023-12">voted to formally authorize</a> in December, focused on the notion that Biden had sought to corruptly benefit from his son Hunter's business dealings.Yet the report, despite arguing that Biden "abused his public office for the private financial benefit of the Biden family," failed to establish that the president received direct financial benefits from his family's business dealings, or sought to change US policy as a result. And key aspects of the committees' evidence was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/house-republicans-biden-impeachment-fbi-indictment-hunter-bribes-2024-2">discredited along the way</a>.In a statement following the report's release, House Speaker Mike Johnson released a statement commending the the work of the Oversight, Judiciary, and Ways and Means Committees that worked on the report, and encouraged "all Americans to read this report."But he did not signal that any vote would be forthcoming, and dozens of Republicans remain skeptical of the idea of formally impeaching Biden.Still, individual Republican lawmakers could seek to force a vote on impeaching Biden through a privileged resolution, as Rep. Many are then hit again.The brigade says the strikes were carried out using artillery fire, anti-tank missile systems, fences rigged with mines, and UAVs.Business Insider could not independently verify the undated video, which the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine also distributed.<h2>The 'road of death'</h2>Novomykhailivka has been a major conflict point between Russia and Ukrainian troops in Donbas. Russian forces launched attacks from the east of the village in December, headed south in January, and returned to the east in February.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-drones-obliterated-a-russian-armored-column-putin-supporters-fume-2024-2?r=US&amp;IR=T">At the end of January, a video published by Ukraine's 72nd Mechanized Brigade appeared to show</a> Ukrainian drones hitting 11 tanks and armored vehicles on the same stretch of road.The road connecting Novomykhailivka to the neighboring village of Blahodatne has been a lethal trap for Russian troops for more than a year.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/ukraine-collects-russian-bodies-road-death-retaken-southeast-2023-09-11/">In September 2023, photos published by Reuters showed</a> Ukrainian volunteers collecting the bodies of Russian soldiers from Blahodatne three months after the battle which liberated the village. A new study published in <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanplh/article/PIIS2542-5196(24)00114-1/fulltext">The Lancet Planetary Health</a> by an international team of researchers reveals a terrifying truth: over 7% of daily deaths in 10 major <keyword id="20026638" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-cities" source="keywords">Indian cities</keyword> are attributed to <keyword id="19900550" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-pollution" source="keywords">air pollution</keyword> caused by <keyword id="22110704" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="PM2-5-pollutants" source="keywords">PM2.5 pollutants</keyword> exceeding the World Health Organization's (WHO) safe limits. Imagine tiny daggers — that's what these PM2.5 particles are like, infiltrating deep into lungs and even the bloodstream, wreaking havoc on our health. The study found that PM2.5 levels breach WHO guidelines a staggering 99.8% of the time in these cities. The analysis covered major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune, Shimla and Varanasi. A staggering 7.2% of deaths in these cities, translating to roughly 33,000 annually, were associated with short-term PM2.5 levels exceeding the WHO's recommended limit (15 micrograms per cubic metre) between 2008 and 2019. Delhi, unfortunately, takes the crown for the most polluted. A shocking 11.5% of its annual deaths are attributed to air pollution, translating to a devastating 12,000 lives lost each year. The link between PM2.5 and mortality is undeniable. Researchers found that a mere 10 microgram per cubic metre increase in these pollutants correlates with a 1.4% rise in daily deaths. This risk factor doubles when considering only levels below India's air quality standards, which are, worryingly, less strict than the WHO's recommendations. But here's a surprising twist: the association between PM2.5 and death is even stronger in cities with generally cleaner air, like Bengaluru and Chennai. This suggests that locally produced pollutants, from sources like construction dust or waste burning, might be significant contributors. There is a glimmer of hope, however. The study emphasises that implementing stricter air quality standards and utilising proven pollution control methods from other parts of the world can be game changers. Lowering and enforcing stricter air quality limits will save tens of thousands of lives per year, emphasises Joel Schwartz, a co-author from Harvard University. This study serves as a stark wake-up call. The air we breathe in many Indian cities is a gamble, with every breath potentially harmful. Taking decisive action to curb pollution is not just about a cleaner environment, it's about saving the lives of millions of Indians.

Not only toward the people in the situation but also people who plan on going to Disney and will sign the same terms," he said.Triana said Disney's argument could cause would-be park guests to rethink their decision."It might give people pause if they're coming to the parks for the first time or if they are planning on signing up for Disney+," he said. "They'll say, 'Okay, I've signed this. Does that now put me at a disadvantage?'"Disney's first statement didn't curb the criticism from consumers online. Let's say that you're on a jury and this case comes up in front of you," Shenon said. "You're like, 'Okay, but this is Disney. They have all this money. Who cares?''Shenon added, "A layperson might glaze over something like this and say, 'Oh, Disney is a big company. They're not being fair to the small guys.'"Shenon told BI that arbitration is similar to litigation."People still get their day in court, so to speak. It moves faster, and it's more efficient," Shenon said.When asked if Disney's argument could hold up in a courtroom, Shenon said it depended."I think that an argument as far as Disney+ goes would probably be very far-fetched," she said.
