Dravida Munnetra Kahzhagam (DMK)’s Dayanidhi Maran has won over his rival, Sam Paul of Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) by a margin of 3 lakh votes, in the Chennai Central constituency. Maran, the former Union Minister in the UPA government had taken up campaigning in full steam. He is hoping to reclaim his Chennai Central seat which he lost to All India Dravida Munnetra Kahzhagam (AIADMK)’s S R Vijayakumar last year, thanks to anti-Congress wave and his own corruption allegations. Not only has he won the seat thrice, his father Murasoli Maran has been holding on to the seat since 1996. But this time around, Maran refused to take tough questions on corruption during the campaign and stuck to welfare issues like water for his constituents, and hoping to gain from the DMK wave as predicted by exit polls 2019. His challengers are Dr Karthikeyan from NTK (Naam Tamilar Katchi); M Parthasarathi from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP; and Sam Paul S R from Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK). In Chennai North, the contestants are Alagaapuram R. Mohanraj from DMDK, S. Robert Gnana Sekar from BSP; and Dr Kalanidhi Veeraswamy from DMK. This time around, BSP has fielded its candidates for all the three parliamentary constituencies in the metro. In Chennai South, its candidate is R Kumar. NTK however had only one candidate in Chennai Central. Kumar’s challengers are Sumathy alias Thamizhachi Thangapandian from DMK; and J Jayavardhan from AIADMK. Slow voting The elections in Chennai had missed the ‘Amma’ element with Jayalalitha’s death. Her replacement, actor Vijayakanth took up the mantle of campaigning on behalf of her party, but he too was marred by illness. This time, voter turnout had been dismal in the city as well as the state. In fact, the city’s voter turnout was the lowest in the state, at 59%. Within the constituencies, Chennai North had a better turnout at 61%, as compared to Chennai Central at 58% and Chennai South came in last with 57% turnout only. The city’s voter turnout has been declining each time in the last three elections.

A special court here on Thursday discharged all accused in the <keyword id="671656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aircel-Maxis">Aircel-Maxis</keyword> case, including former Communications Minister <keyword id="44007" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dayanidhi-Maran">Dayanidhi Maran</keyword>. 
 
The Central Bureau of Investigation had alleged Dayanidhi Maran, as Minister in the UPA-I government used his influence to help Malaysian businessman T.A. Ananda Krishnan buy Aircel by coercing its owner Sivasankaran to part with his stake. 
 Along with Maran, his brother and businessman Kalanithi Maran, Chennai-based firm Sun Direct TV, Krishnan, his aide Augustus Ralph Marshall, and the two accused firms -- <keyword id="658107" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maxis-Communications-Berhad">Maxis Communications Berhad</keyword> and Astro All Asia Networks, both of Malaysia, were charged in the case.

DMK winner candidate list in Tamil Nadu Lok Sabha Election 2019

<ul><li>Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan threw in his hat in the ring ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.</li><li>However, the candidates from his party, Makkal Needhi Mayyam, are trailing rivals in every seat.</li><li>The party's vote share in every seat is well below than the 16.6% needed to protect the candidate's deposit.</li></ul>Kamal Haasan launched his new party in February 2018 amid much fanfare and soon after he decided to pit his nascent party, largely made of new comers, into the ring for a fight in the elections for the lower house of India's Parliament, the Lok Sabha. He hogged the headlines with his comments and controversies in the run up to the polls but the results have been far less than competitive. His candidates seem set to lose deposit in every seat that the party is competing in. Candidates have to pay an amount of ₹25,000 to stand in a Parliamentary election. The deposit is returned if the candidate wins at least 16.6% vote, but the money is forfeited if the votes are any fewer than a sixth. In all constituencies that the MNM has fielded its candidates, the vote share far less than the threshold to protect their deposit. While no pundit or opinion poll ahead of the elections gave Kamal Haasan's party any chance of a win, such few votes in every constituency may come as a major embarrassment. In Tamil Nadu, it's the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leading the way so far along with the Indian National Congress. Rivals BJP and its local ally All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) are also trailing in most seats, but not as badly as the MNM that made its electoral debut this time.
