George Clooney slams Oscars' lack of diversity: 'We need to get better'

In an interview with <a href="http://nerdist.com/j-j-abrams-on-why-ava-duvernay-should-direct-star-wars/">Nerdist</a>, Abrams said, "She is as much a fan of genre movies, and hearing her talk not just 'Star Wars,' but hearing her talk about those kinds of films is evidence that she would just kill it."He cited her work as director of "Selma" as an example of her strengths."When you look at her work in 'Selma,' which was as well-told and as sophisticated and humane a film as I think has come out in the last decade, if she can do that story that well, there's no question she would kill this movie." DuVernay received a Golden Globe nomination for directing the film based on the 1965 voting rights marches from Selma to Montgomery.She is also well-known for her indie film "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1211890/?ref_=nm_flmg_dr_7">Middle of Nowhere,</a>" for which she became the first black woman to win for best director at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012. J.J. Abrams thinks 'Selma' director Ava DuVernay would 'kill it' as director of 'Star Wars'

That would be the large body known as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-academy-promises-increase-in-diversity-2016-1">just announced a promise</a> to double its minority and female members by 2020, part of an effort to have more inclusive contenders after the backlash to the lack of diversity this year.There are more than 7,000 people in the Academy as of last year, when it offered invitations to 322 new members - in a push, ironically, to <a href="http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/la-et-mn-academy-members-diversity-20150627-story.html" target="_blank">add more diverse faces</a> like "Selma" star David Oyelowo to its ranks.To get into the Academy, first of all, you have to work in film production, according to the <a href="http://www.oscars.org/about/join-academy" target="_blank">organization's membership rules</a>. So no press allowed, which makes the Academy Awards distinct from many annual-awards groups.And you don't exactly just apply to AMPAS. A candidate has to be sponsored by two current members of the organization's branch, which they hope to join.The Academy has 17 branches ranging from acting, directing, and writing to producers and executives. The largest segment of members is made up of actors, giving them an outsize influence on what ultimately wins.AMPAS doesn't offer a complete list of its current members, but you can see the full list of <a href="http://www.oscars.org/news/academy-invites-322-membership" target="_blank">322 members who joined in 2015</a>. They include actress Emma Stone, South Korean director Bong Joon-ho, and Netflix content head Ted Sarandos.The <a href="http://www.oscars.org/about/board-of-governors" target="_blank">Board of Governors</a> is the select group within the Academy that decides its overall vision and policies (and gives final approval on all new members), including the latest changes to boost diversity. The board includes, among others, President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, who has been vocal about the need for more inclusiveness, and Kathleen Kennedy, producer of the Disney "Star Wars" movies.Beyond just increasing the number of diverse members, the Academy is also putting tighter rules on membership so that inactive legacy members can lose their voting rights. Christmas is one of the biggest movie days of the year.
This year, eight movies will come out on Dec. 25.
If you're heading to theaters, and aren't sure what to see, we've compiled which films are worth checking out and which you should wait for on DVD.&#xa0;
<h3>1. Pass: "Unbroken"</h3>

Why to see it:&#xa0;The survival story is Angelina Jolie's third time behind the director's chair&#xa0;with a script from the Oscar-winning team of Joel and Ethan Coen ("Fargo").
Why to pass:&#xa0;While the film covers a lot of ground, reviews suggest the movie <a href="http://www.timeout.com/london/film/unbroken">doesn't completely capture the essence</a> of Zamperini while <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movie/unbroken/review/752885">shortchanging on a few significant scenes</a> from Laura Hillenbrand's book of the same name.
The film failed to gain any big nods at the Golden Globes which doesn't bode well for the film at the Oscars.
<h3>2. Must See: "The Imitation Game"</h3>

The film is getting its wide release on Christmas.
Why it's a must-see: See the film for Cumberbatch and co-star Keira Knightley alone. Both are masterful on screen. Cumberbatch has a knack for playing awkwardly humorous geniuses on screen.
The story of Turing and how he helped win the war was a long held government secret that took a tragic turn due to the mathematician's homosexuality which was illegal at the time. This part of the film feels slightly rushed through.
Both Cumberbatch and Knightley received Golden Globe nominations for their roles. Cumberbatch is almost certainly a lock for an Oscar nomination.
<h3>3. See: "Selma"</h3>

Why to see it: Powerful and emotional, it's&#xa0;impossible to watch this film without thinking of the parallels between the protests today in light of the Eric Garner and Ferguson cases.&#xa0;David Oyelowo is the perfect embodiment of Dr. King.
One scene that sticks out in particular is a hard-to-watch&#xa0;portrayal of Bloody Sunday in which 600 marchers were brutally attacked.
As our reporter Brett Arnold <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/selma-speaks-to-contemporary-race-issues-2014-12">points out in his review</a>, it's an important film not only to see where we came from but to help show how much farther we need to go as a nation.&#xa0;
<h3>4. For the family/musical lover: "Into the Woods"</h3>

Why to see it: Anna Kendrick, Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, and more singing. Need we say more?
Disney not only has an all-star cast, but composer Stephen Sondheim,&#xa0;the lyricist behind plays including "West Side Story," "Sweeney Todd," and "Into the Woods."
<h3>The four other movies coming out Christmas Day:</h3>
5. "Big Eyes": Tim Burton's comedic drama based on the true-life story of artist Margaret Keane&#xa0;(Amy Adams)&#xa0;whose husband Walter (Christoph Waltz) started taking credit for her successful paintings of characters with big eyes.&#xa0;Both actors were nominated for Golden Globes. See it.
6. "The Gambler":&#xa0;Mark Wahlberg stars as a professor who has a double life as a gambler and gets involved with a student.&#xa0;Skip.
7. "American Sniper":&#xa0;Clint Eastwood's second film this year ("Jersey Boys")&#xa0;is based on the New York Times' best-seller of the same name starring Bradley Cooper as United States Navy SEAL Chris Kyle who&#xa0;was known as the deadliest sniper in US history. See it.
8. "Leviathan":&#xa0;The Russian drama is about a&#xa0;man fighting against a corrupt mayor to retain ownership of his property. The film is currently sitting at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes with&#xa0;<a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/leviafan/?search=leviathan">over 30 positive reviews</a>.&#xa0;&#xa0;The film won <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2802154/awards?ref_=tt_awd">best screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival</a> this year. A good alternative from the ordinary.

If you don't want to see any of those movies, here are a few recent releases you should consider seeing over the holidays.
<h3>"Top Five"</h3>

Chris Rock's return to theaters is both funny and&#xa0;and an introspective look at fame. Rock plays Andre Allen, a washed-up actor known for a franchise in which he plays a cop in a bear suit called "Hammy the Bear." Years later, Allen tries to rejuvenate his career with a more serious role; however, most reporters just want to talk about his old franchise. In many ways, the film echoes this year's earlier film "Birdman," starring Michael Keaton but without the feeling of a dramatic one-shot.&#xa0;
Fans hoping to see Kevin Hart, who has been a regular in promos for the film, will be disappointed by a short cameo from the comedian. However, there are a few other big cameos in the film to make up for it.
<h3>"The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies"</h3>

The best of "The Hobbit" trilogy, director Peter Jackson's final installment takes us back to Middle Earth one last time to battle a dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch) and a handful of armies who descend upon a mountain filled with treasure.
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hobbit-battle-of-the-five-armies-review-2014-12">While not perfect</a>, this is the movie with the majority of the action that fans have been waiting for through two other installments. The film is already performing very well overseas and should end up with one of the largest hauls at the box office this year by the end of its run.
<h3>"The Theory of Everything"</h3>

Eddie Redmayne's magnificent portrayal of Stephen Hawking not only earned him a Golden Globes nomination, but also wowed Hawking himself. As a result, he&#xa0;allowed filmmakers to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/stephen-hawking-voice-in-the-theory-of-everything-2014-10">swap out a synthetic voice they created for Hawking's character with his own trademarked version</a>.
Redmayne trained for four months to play the cosmologist, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-eddie-redmayne-prepared-to-play-stephen-hawking-2014-10">reading everything and watching every video he could find on the theoretical physicist</a>. He also regularly worked with a choreographer and visited a neurology clinic where he spoke to patients.&#xa0;
Not only does the film narrates Hawking's life, but also the hardships it brought upon his relationship with wife Jane, beautifully played by Felicity Jones.
<h3>"Inherent Vice"</h3>

Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon reunite in a wacky detective tale where Larry "Doc" Sportello (Phoenix) investigates the disappearance of an ex girlfriend.
Based on the novel by Thomas Pynchon, our own Brett Arnold says the film is worth a watch for Phoenix's performance alone as a "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/inherent-vice-review-2014-10">pot-smoking hippie who obliviously stumbles from one major clue to the next.</a>"
Phoenix received a Golden Globe nod for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical.

8 Movies Are Coming Out Christmas Day - Here Are The Ones You Should See

The Eric Garner and Michael Brown grand jury decisions have brought <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/its-clear-that-race-is-americas-deepest-problem-2014-11">the issue of race</a> back into the spotlight, and the calculated response and protest by unhappy American people harkens back to Martin Luther King Jr.'s crusade for civil rights.&#xa0;
"Selma" is not your typical biopic: We don't see Martin Luther King Jr.'s birth, we don't see his death, and we don't get very much in between. What we do get is a focused look at one key event that changed the course of the country for the better - the monumental Civil Rights March in Selma, Alabama that led to national attention and widespread outrage for the South's 'desegregated in name only' approach and systematic opression of people of color.

Many of Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous speeches are depicted in the film, and each sentiment is more strikingly relevant than the last.
The basic notion that all of the cops in the movie are white and any threat of violence to white people seem to be valued more than excessive force against blacks&#xa0;evokes the deaths of Gordon and Brown after aggressive police responses. It brings certain numbers to mind, such as how Ferguson is 60% black, the police force is 94% white, and that 93% of Ferguson arrests in 2013 were people of color.
One of the most memorable scenes is when protesters (without MLK Jr.) descend upon the bridge towards Selma and are accosted by ruthless, angry white southern police officers as well as a slew of spectators eagerly cheering them on. This scene depicts a watershed moment and major turning point in the movement, as news cameras and photographers were able to bring the issue into the homes of Americans nationwide. Martin Luther King's comments following the first march on the bridge was a national call-to-arms for people of all races.
Countless African-Americans are beaten and a few killed by the police during the marches, and the film does not shy away from the sheer brutality that was on display during this era. When King notes that none of the white police officers were convicted or tried for their awful crimes, more connections to the present are revealed and it's hard to swallow.

While blatant beatings orchestrated by law enforcement in broad daylight may be a thing of the past, the protests in Ferguson (and to a lesser extent those breaking out across the nation)&#xa0;and the overzealous militarized response are not far off. Sure, you can spin it and put the blame on the small subsection of protesters who were looting and causing a ruckus, but there were thousands protesting peacefully who were tear-gassed all the same. The parallels to the "hands up, don't shoot" movement are striking and shocking.&#xa0;
David Oyelowo plays MLK Jr. with such a dignified grace and commanding presence that at times it's hard to believe you're not watching footage of the man himself. It's a subtle performance in which he says just as much with his eyes and demeanor than he does with words, and it's one of the year's best - even in a year of many wonderful performances.
"Selma" is a timely, important and magnificent film that proves no matter how far we've come towards equality in America, we still have a long way to go.

It's Amazing How Much The New Martin Luther King Jr. Movie Resonates Today

Isaacs was forced to respond to the nominations' lack of diversity shortly after they were announced.
When <a href="http://www.vulture.com/2015/01/academy-president-on-selma-snubs-diversity.html?mid=twitter_nymag" target="_blank">Vulture asked Isaacs</a> whether the organization has a problem with recognizing diversity, she replied, "Not at all. Not at all."

Many expected "Selma" director, Ava DuVernay, would make history this year as the first black woman nominated for Best Director. She <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/oscar-snubs-surprises-2015-1#surprise-both-selma-director-ava-duvernay-and-the-films-actors-were-shut-out-despite-nods-for-best-picture-and-best-original-song-john-legend-and-commons-glory-most-surprisingly-avu-duvernay-was-not-honored-in-the-best-director-category-a-nom-that-would-have-been-the-first-for-an-african-american-woman-4" target="_blank">was snubbed</a>. The film did earn a Best Picture nomination, but "Selma" breakout <a href="http://www.vulture.com/2015/01/selma-was-robbed.html"></a>star David Oyelowo also failed to receive a Best Actor nod.
<a href="http://www.vulture.com/2015/01/academy-president-on-selma-snubs-diversity.html?mid=twitter_nymag" target="_blank">Vulture</a> asked Isaacs about the seeming "Selma" snub:
"Well, it's a terrific motion picture, and that we can never and should not take away from it, the fact that it is a terrific motion picture," she said. "There are a lot of terrific motion pictures, it's a very competitive time, and there's a lot of great work that has been done. I am very happy that Selma is included in our eight terrific motion-picture [nominations]."
There's clearly a diversity and gender divide within the Academy. <a href="http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/academy/la-et-unmasking-oscar-academy-project-html-htmlstory.html" target="_blank">According to one report</a>, Oscar voters are nearly 94% Caucasian and 77% male.<a href="https://twitter.com/WritersofColour" target="_blank"></a>
