The film was booed by audiences at the 1996 Cannes film festival but <a href="https://www.indiewire.com/2020/08/cronenberg-coppola-cannes-jury-prize-crash-1996-1234579782/">received a special jury prize.</a>Set in a not-too-distant future in which the human body creates abnormal mutations of internal organs, "Crimes of the Future" follows performance artist Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen), who has his organs extracted by his partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux) in pseudo-sexual rituals for underground audiences. Kristen Stewart also stars as a surgeon who is fascinated by Mortensen's Tenser and becomes obsessed with his mutilated body.The film debuted at Cannes on Monday, where it was the most coveted ticket in town. Festival organizers screened the film across three theaters throughout the grand Palais. This was the most space any film has occupied on the festival calendar. Even Warner Bros.'s highly anticipated "Elvis" biopic — which debuts at the festival later this week — will be afforded <a href="https://www.festival-cannes.com/en/press/programmation/">only one screening</a>.As I approached the Palais to attend a press screening for "Crimes," the streets were lined with Cronenberg fans holding up makeshift signs pleading for spare tickets. And the screening room was completely packed.But did Cronenberg's return live up to all the hype?<h2>Is 'Crimes of The Future' any good? Yes, but it's a tough, depressing watch </h2><div type="image" title="An image of Kristen Stewart and Viggo Mortensen in &quot;Crimes of The Future.&quot;" height="1536" width="2048" msid="91772679" hostid="261"></div>The short answer to the question on everyone's minds is: Yes, "Crimes of the Future" is good and it's sufficiently gory.Kristen Stewart, Viggo Mortensen, and Léa Seydoux, who lead the film's creepy ensemble, are a seductive and transfixing trio. They glide through scenes with precision, rattling off the film's often wild and wacky pseudo-scientific dialogue with ferocious clarity that makes it hard to turn away from the film — even when Cronenberg's twisted camera plumbs unimaginable depths. For instance, in one scene an autopsy is performed on the body of a child, whose violent murder we witness in the opening moments of the film. At the press screening Insider attended, several audience members walked out. It must be stated, however, that people leave press screenings at Cannes all the time for several practical reasons, such as scheduling conflicts.Conversely, <keyword id="11896019" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="entertainment" source="Orion">Entertainment</keyword> Weekly reported that there were <a href="https://ew.com/movies/david-cronenberg-crimes-of-the-future-cannes-triumphs-no-walkouts/">no walkouts during the film's simultaneous premiere screening </a>and it received a seven-minute standing ovation, which suggests the film will be one of the year's most polarizing titles.But does "Crimes" have the fuel to stick around and make it to next year's Oscars?<h2>'Crimes of the Future' probably won't be an awards contender</h2><div type="image" title="An image of Kristen Stewart and Léa Seydoux in &quot;Crimes of The Future.&quot;" height="1567" width="2048" msid="91772680" hostid="261"></div>While "Crimes" is both shocking and explicit, it is not salacious or exploitative. The tone of Cronenberg's script and direction is delicate and considered throughout. The violence we see is drawn from an emotional and philosophical core that is prevalent in all of Cronenberg's work.The director explores his deep distrust of institutions and his obsession with the human body and its limits with intrigue rather than gratuitously. This is the lasting power of Cronenberg's work.As a result, the film may not provide the shot of dopamine that blood-thirsty audiences may be craving."Crimes" will also alienate those who are hoping for a film that provides concrete answers. In its final act, the film mellows significantly and lines up all the themes it has introduced throughout its nearly 2-hour runtime — climate change, state surveillance, and human desire — and it leaves them hanging, unchallenged.Some viewers might see this as Cronenberg's challenge to the audience. Maybe he's prompting us into action.Others, like me, will be left kicking at the scraps, wishing to find more weight in his commentary. <h2>Grade: B </h2>

It's pretty easy to spot where the shot is stitched together to make it look like Hayley Mills is playing two twins.Now take a look at this shot from the 2019 movie "Us." Lupita Nyong'o appears to be head-to-head with her doppelgänger, who's clutching her neck as they grab each other by the wrists. To pull off this scene, director Jordan Peele needed much more than a simple stitch.But creating complex twin shots like this one required a lot of building blocks over more than 100 years of innovation. So, how did it happen?Having one actor star in dual roles was a popular novelty in the silent-film era and in the early talkies.♪ Join the Navy band ♪ ♪ When they play ♪See this shot from 1898, where the illusionist Georges Méliès created four moving versions of his head in one frame? It was accomplished with the use of matte shots, which were kind of like old-school green-screen composites created by blocking parts of the camera lens.It was with mattes that the first split-screen effects were pulled off. This is the traditional twin technique you probably associate with "The Parent Trap."You shoot the scene twice, with the actor and a stand-in switching places, then combine the two strips of film into one. To disguise the seam, filmmakers make use of background elements in the shot, like a doorframe.You can see that in "A Stolen Life," with two Bette Davises. Or here, where the actor played twins again in "Dead Ringer." In these movies, you can also see the use of the classic over-the-shoulder technique, where the actor speaks to a stand-in filmed from behind.Split screens got complicated when one twin had to interact with another. Take this scene from "The Prisoner of Zenda," where Ronald Colman shakes hands with his identical cousin. The filmmakers put glass in front of the camera, part of which they covered in masking tape to matte out the head and shoulders of the actor's double. After filming the scene, they ran the film backwards and filmed it again with the actor on the other side, this time matting out everything but his head and shoulders.That's a lot of work for a handshake shot that's only a few seconds long.The split screen also usually required filming with a locked and fixed camera, resulting in shot compositions that could look very designed, with a sort of butterfly symmetry.So, how did you get from that to a shot like this, from David Cronenberg's horror movie "Dead Ringers"?In this film, not to be confused with the earlier Bette Davis movie "Dead Ringer," Jeremy Irons plays a disturbed pair of twin gynecologists. The movie was a big deal at the time because of how dynamic its shots were. In this scene, for example, you see the twins walk and talk together while followed by a fluid moving camera.And a shot like this was only possible because of innovations from "Star Wars," which, in 1977, was the first film to extensively use motion-control cameras. This was groundbreaking for twin effects because directors could now program precise, repeatable camera movements to replicate the same shot over and over again. This helped visual effects artists film clean plates with no actors in them and use those plates to help merge people into the scene in postproduction.Motion control became a mainstay of twin movies. And in 2002, it was among several techniques used to create the 130 twinning shots in the movie "<keyword id="198042" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Adaptation">Adaptation</keyword>," where Nic Cage plays the identical Kaufman brothers.One way the filmmakers made the effects invisible was with green-screen composites. That's when you film a twin on a green screen, isolate them, and comp them into a shot with the other twin, as seen here with the two Seth Rogen characters in "An American Pickle."For this scene, Seth walked on a treadmill in front of a green screen so that when his two characters were comped together, they'd move at exactly the right pace. In "Adaptation," the green-screen method only worked for about 20% of the twin shots, mostly in the scenes that took place indoors.Outdoors, green screens can create issues with green spill, when that green light ends up in places you don't want it. In these cases, the filmmakers on "Adaptation" turned to rotoscoping, which essentially means tracing by hand. With the rise of digital rotoscoping in the '90s, the technique became a major player in twin movies, allowing artists to comp together elements of different shots even if they weren't filmed in front of a green screen.It's one thing to make two versions of an actor, but what about 80?That's how many versions of Hugo Weaving appear in the "Burly Brawl" sequence from "The Matrix Reloaded." No amount of motion control, split screens, or rotoscoping could make a fight sequence with this many clones possible.Instead, this scene took advantage of digital doubles. These CG humans were most often used for wild stunt sequences that no person could perform in real life. Because CG faces can look rubbery up close, digi-doubles are best used for wide shots, like those of the Agent Smith clones in "The Matrix Reloaded."CG humans are also super expensive to create. The "Burly Brawl" scene alone cost Warner Bros. an estimated $40 million, a big chunk of the film's $150 million budget. So the digital-doubling method is best for a single sequence, not a workable option for doubling an actor throughout an entire movie.Director David Fincher had to come up with a different solution for his film "<keyword id="327872" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="The-Social-Network">The Social Network</keyword>," where Armie Hammer played the Winklevoss twins.Armie and his body double, Josh Pence, underwent a tailored training regimen to make their bodies as similar as possible. To transpose Armie's face onto Josh's body, the filmmakers settled on a facial-capture process very similar to the one used in video games like NBA 2K.The VFX team first used a medical-grade laser to scan Josh's and Armie's heads for digital models. During filming, Josh wore tracking markers on his face so the VFX team could later object-track his facial movements. After, they recorded Armie inside a custom stage, which had computer-controlled lighting settings to match the light in every scene. In this stage, an array of cameras recorded every angle of Armie's face to provide what is called a face texture map, which could then be used to animate the CG model of his head, which, in turn, would get mapped onto Josh's body.This basic process was also used to clone Paul Rudd for the Netflix series "<keyword id="10781778" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="living-with-yourself">Living with Yourself</keyword>," except Paul preferred to act out his scenes alone, reacting to his prerecorded lines through an earpiece.In scenes that required a stand-in, like this one, where Paul's character resuscitates his clone, the actor performed opposite a guy in a green suit, who VFX artists could replace later on.The elaborate face-scanning approach wouldn't have been as feasible for "Us," which follows a family of four confronting their evil doppelgängers. The film built on all the innovations in twin effects over the past 100-plus years to bring this nightmare scenario to life.With the advancement of face, head, and body replacements, technology could now be used in a Dr. Frankenstein kind of way to harvest different limbs and body parts, a similar method used to create the clones in many scenes from "<keyword id="1624501" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Orphan-Black">Orphan Black</keyword>."From the start, "Us" required a lot of stunt doubles, including a photo double and a body double for each of the four main actors. One producer joked that there could be six versions of Winston Duke on set at a given time, all dressed in Howard sweatshirts and glasses.Before shooting, Jordan and the VFX team would figure out which of the twins was guiding the action. They'd capture that first with the main actor playing the lead and their double playing opposite.Then the actor and double would swap places. After shooting, the VFX team would patch the twin plates. In many cases, they'd decide to use a head from one plate and track it onto the body of the double in the other plate. But often it got more complicated, with artists piecing together by hand various parts of an actor's body from different shots.Most modern twin movies and TV shows use motion-control cameras to smooth out this process, but in "Us," the script called for lots of handheld shots filmed with a more visceral camera style. Without motion control, the crew had to take careful notes of all camera motion in each scene, marking every position and tilt so they could replicate it after swapping the actor.There were also scenes that the actors couldn't perform with a real double, like this face-off in the hall of mirrors, when the young version of Lupita Nyong'o's character gets choked by her evil doppelgänger.The actor, Madison Curry, needed something to really grab onto, so they had her clutch a paper cup wrapped in green, which would be digitally replaced later on. A similar technique was used in "<keyword id="4295625" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="enemy">Enemy</keyword>," where Jake Gyllenhaal acted opposite a tennis ball on a stick, its height representing his double's eyeline. This method can make the VFX team's job easier, because it means there isn't a whole body to erase later on, as seen here for "Orphan Black" and "An American Pickle."None of these innovations happened in a vacuum. Even in 2019, "Us" relied on some of Hollywood's tried and true methods, like the good old split screen, for a number of shots. Every once in a while on set, Jordan Peele would say, "I'm thinking this shot is a Hayley Mills."The dynamic twin scenes in his movie were a culmination of more than 12 decades of Hollywood ingenuity.

The evolution of how actors play their own lookalikes in movies, from 'The Parent Trap' to 'An American Pickle'

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>As we approach the end of 2016, a number of people might be wondering whether there's some chance that the past year was just some sort of weird dream.It turns out that if you ask the scientists whose job it is to probe the nature of reality, the answer is actually: Maybe.Maybe everything that's happening is just a simulation being run on a computer by some smarter, higher order being (with a weird sense of humor).Earlier this year, at the&#xa0;<a href="http://www.amnh.org/learn-teach/adults/hayden-planetarium-programs/2016-isaac-asimov-memorial-debate-is-the-universe-a-simulation">2016 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate</a> at the American Museum of Natural History, which addressed the question of whether the universe is a simulation, the esteemed panelists took a stab at explaining how we know about that question. Depending on whether you want reality to be real or not,&#xa0;the answers from some panelists may be more comforting than the responses from others.Physicist Lisa Randall, for example, said that she thought the odds&#xa0;that the universe isn't "real" are so low as to be "effectively zero."A satisfying answer for those who don't want to sit there puzzling out what it would mean for the universe not to be real, to be sure.But on the other hand, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, who was hosting the debate, said that he thinks the likelihood of the universe being a simulation "may be very high."Uh-oh?The question of whether we know that our universe is real has vexed thinkers going far back into history, long before Descartes made his famous "I think, therefore I am" statement. The same question has been explored in modern science-fiction films like "The Matrix" and David Cronenberg's "Existenz."But most physicists and philosophers agree that <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/is-the-universe-is-a-simulation-2016-4">it's impossible to prove definitively</a> that we don't live in a simulation and that the universe is real.Tyson agrees, but says that he wouldn't be surprised if we were to find out somehow that someone else is responsible for our universe.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>One of the main arguments that physicists use to talk about what's known as the "simulation hypothesis" is that if we can prove that it's possible to simulate a universe - if we can figure out all the laws that govern how everything works, which physicists are trying to do - that makes it much more likely that it is actually simulated. If we know that it's possible to do something, it's much easier to think that thing is being done.We haven't been able to figure out how to simulate a universe - yet. But it's not too hard to imagine that some other creature out there is far smarter than us.Tyson points out that we humans have always defined ourselves as the smartest beings alive, orders of magnitude more intelligent than species like chimpanzees that <a href="http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/tiny-genetic-differences-between-humans-and-other-primates-pervade-the-genome/">share close to 99%</a> of our DNA. We can create symphonies and do trigonometry and astrophysics - some of us, anyway.But Tyson uses a thought experiment to imagine a life-form that's as much smarter than us as we are than dogs, chimps, or other terrestrial mammals."What would we look like to them? We would be drooling, blithering idiots in their presence," he says.Whatever that being is, it very well might be able to create a simulation of a universe."And if that's the case, it is easy for me to imagine that everything in our lives is just the creation of some other entity for their entertainment," Tyson says. Neil deGrasse Tyson thinks there's a 'very high' chance the universe is just a simulation

Fans will know Ultron is the homicidal robot that has been the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/avengers-sequel-age-of-ultron-2013-7">main antagonist in the comic series since its 1968 debut</a>. 
The full title of the 2012 follow-up was announced earlier this summer at San Diego Comic-Con. 
"The Avengers: Age of Ultron" is in theaters May 1, 2015.

"Avengers: Age of Ultron" will bring the Marvel Universe’s biggest heroes together again to face one of their biggest villains, with "Marvel’s The Avengers" director Joss Whedon returning to write and direct the sequel. "Marvel’s The Avengers" was released in 2012 and went on to earn $1.5 billion worldwide, making it the third-largest grossing movie of all time.

Before Jennifer Lawrence returns to the big screen in November, get caught up with "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire."
Chelsea Handler's comedy special "Uganda Be Kidding Me" will premiere halfway through the month. The special is part of a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chelsea-handler-netflix-10-million-2014-8">reported $10 million</a> contract the comedienne signed with the streaming service earlier this year.

"Romeo + Juliet" (available 10/1) Often the cool version kids will substitute for reading the actual Shakespearean play, it's young Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes longing for love on the streets of Verona Beach with guns in place of swords.
"Sleepless in Seattle" (available 10/1) Tom Hanks. Meg Ryan. What else is there to say?
"Shivers" (available 10/1) If you're looking for a scare, it's the first film from horror master David Cronenberg ("The Fly") described as about "bloodthirsty, wormlike parasites" -- in one gruesome and memorable sequence, they attack a woman in a bathtub 
"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" (available 10/21) This is a must watch if you need a refresher before the sequel, "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part I," comes out in November. It's the movie everyone will be talking about this fall.
"Django Unchained" (available 10/25) - If you haven't seen Quentin Tarantino's latest Oscar winner, watch this one for the onscreen tension between Leonardo DiCaprio and Christoph Waltz. "Rain Man" (available 10/31) Don't get too excited for Dustin Hoffman's Oscar-winning performances yet. You'll have to wait until Halloween for this one. We're sad, too.

Here's What's New On Netflix In October

The <a href="http://www.filmlinc.com/nyff2014">New York Film Festival</a> is fast approaching, and there's plenty to be excited about.
The festival boasts high-profile world premieres, much-anticipated US debuts as well as a slew of lesser-known works from the world's best filmmakers.
The festival runs September 26th through October 12th and tickets are <a href="http://nyffvwr.easytixs.com/">currently on sale</a>.
For New York City-dwellers looking to attend the festival, here are the films worth your time.
<h3>1. "Gone Girl"</h3>

Why to see it: Everybody's talking about the new David Fincher flick, and for good reason. The film's world premiere takes place on the festival's opening night and is already the subject of much <a href="http://www.thewire.com/entertainment/2014/07/the-oscar-race-is-on-gone-girl-to-open-ny-film-festival/374592/">Oscar buzz</a>. The thriller, based on the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Gone-Girl-Gillian-Flynn/dp/030758836X">New York Times bestseller </a>by Gillian Flynn, centers around a man (Ben Affleck) and the mystery surrounding the disappearance of his wife on their fifth wedding anniversary.<a href="http://www.thewire.com/entertainment/2014/07/the-oscar-race-is-on-gone-girl-to-open-ny-film-festival/374592/"></a> Fincher opened the New York Film Festival <a href="http://www.slantmagazine.com/house/2010/27/new-york-film-festival-2010-the-social-network">in 2010</a> with "The Social Network" and went on to win three Oscars.

<h3>2. "Inherent Vice" </h3>

Why to see it: A new work from auteur Paul Thomas Anderson is a rare event and certainly something to celebrate. PTA's follow-up to 2012's "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1560747/?ref_=nv_sr_1">The Master</a>" comes sooner than expected, as "The Master" was released five long years after "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0469494/?ref_=nv_sr_1">There Will Be Blood</a>," which itself came five years after "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0272338/?ref_=fn_al_tt_4">Punch Drunk Love</a>." This adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Inherent-Vice-Novel-Thomas-Pynchon/dp/0143117564">novel of the same name</a> follows a drug-fueled detective through 1970s Los Angeles as he investigates the disappearance of a former girlfriend. "Inherent Vice" marks the first time Anderson has adapted someone else's work. 
<h3>3. "Whiplash"</h3>

Who's in it: Miles Teller, JK Simmons
Why to see it: The film follows a young musician (Miles Teller) as he trains under his teacher (J.K. Simmons) to do whatever it takes to become a top jazz drummer. Everybody that has seen "Whiplash" <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/whiplash_2014/">loves it</a>, and early reviews from Sundance indicate that Simmons steals the show in what is being hailed as the "<a href="http://variety.com/2014/film/reviews/sundance-film-review-whiplash-1201061948/">role of his career</a>." Miles Teller, who blew audiences away in "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1714206/?ref_=nv_sr_1">The Spectacular Now</a>," has received <a href="http://chasewhale.com/post/73882028490/sundance-2014-capsule-review-whiplash-or-the-most">equal praise</a> for his work in the film.

<h3>4. "Birdman" </h3>

Praise surrounding the film exploded after its debut at <a href="http://variety.com/2014/film/awards/birdman-confirms-its-awards-buzz-at-telluride-1201294789/">Telluride</a> in late August, with many pointing out that the film <a href="http://www.thewrap.com/birdman-and-foxcatcher-leave-telluride-audiences-blissed-out-and-bowled-over/">brilliantly pays homage to</a> (and skewers) filmmaking itself.

"Foxcatcher" is <a href="http://www.thewrap.com/birdman-and-foxcatcher-leave-telluride-audiences-blissed-out-and-bowled-over/">poised to continue</a> this impressive streak as it <a href="http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/moviesnow/la-et-mn-steve-carell-foxcatcher-postponed-release-date-20130926-story.html">finally</a> reaches theaters this fall after debuting at <a href="http://variety.com/2014/film/reviews/cannes-film-review-foxcatcher-1201185646/">Cannes</a> to much acclaim. Based on the true life story of Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum), the movie follows the athlete as he teams up with the eccentric millionaire John du Pont (Steve Carell) to train for the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Why to see it: While David Cronenberg's later films have veered significantly from his earlier (and completely brilliant) horror films, his uniquely artistic approach ensures that no matter how traditional the plot may seem, things are going to get real weird. His latest film is a satricial look at Hollywood and the idea of celebrity and promsies to be a surreal, bizarre, and definitievly Cronenbergian take on the concept.

7. "Listen Up, Phillip"

Who's in it: Jason Schwartzman, Elizabeth Moss, Krysten Ritter
Why to see it: "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1255913/?ref_=nv_sr_1">Bored to Death</a>" fans yearning for more of Jason Schwartzman in leading roles should find plenty to enjoy here. Schwartzman stars as Phillip, a young writer who escapes a dwindling relationship and seeks refuge in the summer home of his literary idol where he finally finds time to work on himself. The dark comedy premiered at Sundance earlier this year and has received tons of <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/listen_up_philip/">rave reviews</a>.

<h3>8. "Pasolini"</h3>

Who's in it: Willem Dafoe
Why to see it: Legendary New York filmmaking icon Abel Ferrara's second feature of the year ("<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2758890/?ref_=nv_sr_1">Welcome To New York</a>" is yet to be released in the US) is not a typical biopic. Willem Dafoe stars as the titular Pier Paolo Pasolini, and rather than showcase the notorious filmmaker's entire backstory, Ferrara chooses to focus only on the last day of his life. The film provides a rare glimpse of an interesting figure in such a way and at such an angle that only Abel Ferrara could pull off.

<h3>9. "Time Out Of Mind"</h3>

Who's in it: Richard Gere, Jena Malone
Why to see it: Oren Moverman's third feature ("<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0790712/">The Messenger</a>," "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1640548/?ref_=nm_knf_i3">Rampart</a>") stars Richard Gere as a homeless man trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter. While that may sound manipulatively sappy on the surface, Moverman has proven that he can handle heavily emotional material, as "The Messenger" had a similarly depressing sounding premise and wound up being incredibly moving. Gere is certainly ripe for an award-worthy performance, and "Time Out Of Mind" seems to be the perfect vehicle for one.
