The free edition G Suite for Education will be renamed to Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals. "If you're currently using this edition, you won't see any changes besides a new name and new features. We'll keep building new solutions for this free version by listening closely to educators and their needs," said Shantanu Sinha, Product and Design Lead, Google for Education. Education Fundamentals and Education Plus are already available today and institutions will be able to purchase Education Standard and the Teaching and Learning Upgrade starting April 14. To support schools into the future and ensure fair distribution of this valuable resource, Google said it will implement a new pooled <keyword id="6388684" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="storage">storage</keyword> model and helping admins and school leaders manage their storage. The new storage model will provide schools and universities with a baseline of 100TB of pooled cloud storage shared across all users  more than enough storage for over 100 million docs, 8 million presentations or 400,000 hours of video. "This policy will go into effect across all Google Workspace for Education editions for existing customers in July 2022 and will be effective for new customers signing up in 2022," said Google. Google introduces Workspace for Education which includes Meet, Gmail, Drive, Docs and Sheets

New Delhi, E-commerce aggregation platform <keyword id="4178573" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ShipRocket">Shiprocket</keyword> on Thursday announced it has raised $27 million (nearly 200 Crore) in <keyword id="45633" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="series">Series</keyword> C3 funding. The company said it will use the fresh funds towards aggressive product development roadmap, which includes hiring top talent across product, data, and engineering functions. The funds will also focus on the company's new strategic initiatives, including expanding globally. The fresh funding round was co-led by Tribe Capital, a leading Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm, along with March Capital, a Santa Monica-based venture growth firm. "Shiprocket is the first and the largest D2C shipping enabler in India today. With the growth in D2C as a share of overall <keyword id="436047" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ecommerce">eCommerce</keyword>, there is a growing opportunity to enable the full-stack of services in the post-purchase journey of the D2C consumer," said Saahil Goel, CEO and Co-founder, Shiprocket. Rahul Mehta of DST Global also participated in the round along with existing investor Bertelsmann India Investments, the company said in a statement. The latest round brings Shiprocket's total funding to $53 million. "We already power shipping for over 100,000 merchants and have recently launched Shiprocket Fulfilment for extending the existing platform include storage, pick, pack and dispatch," Goel informed. Launched in 2017, Shiprocket turned profitable in FY18-19 and has an annualised revenue run rate between $50-60 million. Shiprocket currently processes more than 4 Million monthly shipments, enabling more than 100,000 sellers to sell directly to their consumers across India. Shiprocket is now looking to hire product managers and engineers after raising $27 million in funds

Rome, Italy's competition watchdog has fined social networking giant <keyword id="6354576" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="facebook">Facebook</keyword> seven million <keyword id="64258" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="euros">euros</keyword> ($8.45 million) for failing to comply with a previous order related to <keyword id="10782976" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="improper-use">improper use</keyword> of its subscribers' <keyword id="6355729" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="data">data</keyword>. After an <keyword id="49112" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Investigation">investigation</keyword>, the Italian Competition Authority (AGCM) said on Wednesday that it had found that Facebook Inc. and its subsidiary Facebook Ireland Ltd. did not implement a 2018 order requiring them to dismiss an incorrect practice in the use of <keyword id="66720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="users">users</keyword>' data, nor did they publish a corrective declaration requested by the watchdog, Xinhua news agency reported. In November 2018, after a nine-month investigation, the AGCM concluded that Facebook used subscribers' data in a way that breached Italy's Consumer Code. Therefore, it handed Facebook two fines totalling 10 million euros ($12 million). The first fine was imposed because Facebook "deceptively persuades users to register on the platform" without informing them properly and immediately in the signup phase that their data would be collected for commercial purposes, the watchdog explained. The second fine in 2018 related to passing user data onto to third parties. On Friday, the Italian competition watchdog explained in a statement that the new seven-million-euro fine was decided because "the two companies have not published the corrective statement and have not ceased the established unfair practice." Although the "claim of gratuity" at the point of registering has been eliminated, "immediate and clear information is not yet provided on the collection and use of the users' data for commercial purposes," the AGCM said on Wednesday. According to the AGCM, such information is necessary to enable consumers to decide whether to subscribe to the service, "in the light of the economic value the users' transferred data have for Facebook, which represents the payment for using the service." The most recent proceeding against Facebook was launched in January 2020, and the fine was decided in a meeting on February 9, according to the Italian watchdog. The original investigation leading to the two previous financial penalties in 2018 was opened after three Italian advocacy groups filed a class-action lawsuit against Facebook for alleged improper use of personal data filed. Facebook fined 7 million euros by Italian watchdog for improper data use of its subscribers

New Delhi, In a fresh bid to make online teaching more secure, <keyword id="6355629" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="google">Google</keyword> has announced new safety and engagement features in its <keyword id="6357996" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="meet">Meet</keyword> app. <keyword id="6356089" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="teachers">Teachers</keyword> will soon have the option to end <keyword id="6394135" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Meetings">meetings</keyword> for everyone on the call, preventing students from staying on after the teacher has left  including in breakout rooms. Rolling out over the next few weeks, "mute all" feature will help educators keep class on track. "Since sometimes it's important to teach without interruption, launching in the coming months, meeting hosts will be able to control when students can unmute themselves," said Jennifer Shen, Product Manager, <keyword id="4237083" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-meet">Google Meet</keyword>, on Wednesday. In the coming months, educators using tablets or mobile phones to teach will also have access to key moderation controls, like who can join their meetings or use the chat or share their screen, directly from their iOS or Android devices. Later this year, Google <keyword id="6356216" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="classroom">Classroom</keyword> and Meet will work together even better, so every meeting created from Classroom is even safer by default. "When meetings are generated from Classroom, students won't be able to join before the teacher. Meet will also know who's on the Classroom roster, so only students and teachers in the class will be able to join," Google said. Every teacher in Classroom will be a meeting host by default, so if there are multiple teachers, they'll be able to share the load of managing the class. "And later this year, meetings that aren't started from Classroom will also support multiple hosts, making it easier to partner with others helping facilitate the class," Shen noted. Google will soon launch new settings in the Admin console so <keyword id="9440524" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="School-Leaders">school leaders</keyword> can set policies for who can join their school's video calls, and whether people from their school can join video calls from other schools. Google Meet introduces new safety and engagement features to improve online teaching

"One thing I hope for is that we don't fragment, that we are able to, whether it's on privacy or data safety, bring together a set of global rules that will allow all of us to both comply and make sure that what we build is safe to use," he said in a virtual interactive session with Telangana's Information Technology and Industry Minister K. T. Rama Rao during Bio Asia 2021. Pointing out that there are regulations all over the world for privacy, he said Europe was first to come out with General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). "It's spreading everywhere. Privacy is a human right. I think it is going to be recognised and there will be other regulations which are going to say that when you use, in healthcare for example, data, who is benefitting. Ultimately if some patient data is being used, it has to benefit the patient. I think that the value exchange around data, its privacy or if it is used who is benefiting are all things where there are going to be rules that are going to be legislated. Same thing with facial recognition and same with AI ethics." Stating that technology is becoming pervasive in people's lives, society and economy, he underlined the need for companies building tech platforms and tools to ensure privacy of the user. "We need to take responsibility to ensure we build for privacy, we build for security, we build for AI ethics and we build even for Internet safety because these four things are not things we can wait even for regulation. We have to, even from an engineering and design ethos perspective, build it into our core. We can't afford to say we will build it and we will see what breaks and then fix it, because that attitude is not tolerated in any other industry and it should not be even in the tech industry." "One of the things we are trying to ensure is how do we have that design principles and engineering processes to ensure that the products and the services are respecting privacy, security, AI ethics as well as the fundamental Internet safety but beyond that there will be regulation," he added. Replying to another question by the minister, Nadella noted that the pandemic has, across the board, accelerated digital transformation. He pointed out how the pandemic and digital response transformed outpatient visit to a hospital, brought workflow innovation around patients and their families, reducing burden on frontline workers, and giving better tools for physicians so that they can spend more time with the patients. He said the transformation also helped with clinical data for drug discovery. "I am looking forward to come out of pandemic as a society which is better at handling the next tail event, because we can't predict what the next tail event is," he added. On new way of working from home, the Microsoft CEO said it will bring more flexibility in terms of time and worksites. Datacracy: Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella calls for a common set of global rules governing data— not fragmented local ones

And, they are not pleased with <keyword id="10861079" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="indias-new-it-rules">India’s new IT Rules</keyword> for social media platforms, OTTs and digital news content. According to Mozilla’s public policy advisor, Udhbav Tiwari, the sudden move will have ‘disastrous consequences’ for the open internet. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="81221070" title="Whatsapp, Signal and Telegram face a catch-22 situation as India’s new social media rules threaten encryption" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> “By expanding the ‘due diligence’ obligations that intermediaries will have to follow to avail safe harbour, these rules will harm end-to-end encryption, substantially increase surveillance, promote automated filtering and prompt a fragmentation of the internet,” he said in a <a href="https://blog.mozilla.org/netpolicy/2021/03/02/indias-new-intermediary-liability-and-digital-media-regulations-will-harm-the-open-internet/">blog post.</a> Tiwari highlighted six reasons why the new regulations are not going to empower Indians but harm their interests. Their implementation could even lead to unintended consequences on the overall health of the internet, according to him. The rules can’t be followed without breaking end-to-end encryption India’s new IT regulations ask all ‘significant’ social media intermediaries to track down the ‘first originator’. According to Mozilla, this will give platforms like WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram no option but to break end-to-end encryption. That, in turn, harms user interests since it weakens the overall security of the services. “[The rules] contradict the principles of data minimisation endorsed in the Ministry of Electronic and Information Technology’s (MeitY) draft of the <keyword id="4839724" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="data-protection-bill">data protection bill</keyword>,” wrote Tiwari adding that the the aspect of automated filtering of child sexual abuse materials (CSAM), non-consensual sexual acts is also fundamentally incompatible with end-to-end encryption. Making companies embed monitoring infrastructure for surveillance will have ‘disastrous implications’ for the freedom of expression and privacy. Not enough time is provided to verify claims of misuse While a good move in theory, especially if you are one of the victims, it does complicate things on the behalf of the social media platforms. The 36-hour limit for content takedown and the 72-hour window for sharing user data is not enough to analyse requests or seek further clarification, according to Mozilla’s public policy head. “This would likely create a perverse incentive to take down content and share user data without sufficient due process safeguards,” said Tiwari explaining how such a norm would undermine the people’s fundamental right to privacy and freedom of expression. The new laws are against Supreme Court judgement When it comes to revenge porn, deep fakes and other materials that are derogatory, social media platforms are now required to remove the posts within 24 hours. While it is a legitimate issue, Mozilla’s Tiwari points out that it goes against the landmark <a href="https://globalfreedomofexpression.columbia.edu/cases/shreya-singhal-v-union-of-india/">Shreya Singhal judgement</a> by the Supreme Court in 2015. The bench clarified that the companies would only be expected to remove content when told to so directly by a court or government order. They take away all anonymity provided by the Internet ‘Voluntary’ verification, as mandated in India’s new IT rules, is asking social media platforms to provide a voluntary mechanism for users to prove their identity using phone numbers or government-issued IDs. This may create an incentive for the collection of <keyword id="458689" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="personal-data">personal data</keyword>. While the law says nothing about potential misuse, the details can be used to profile and target users. The public has already seen an example of this during Facebook’s <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/topic/Cambridge-Analytica">Cambridge Analytica</a> scandal. And, where there is personal data, there is a great risk of hackers trying to steal it. This will increase the pressure on social media intermediaries — those who can afford it — to step up their cybersecurity. According to Mozilla, more than fighting misinformation, these laws will impede the benefits that anonymity on the internet has to offer, such as whistleblowing and protection from stalkers. There aren’t enough checks and balances against over reach Content has to be removed. There isn’t enough time to check each complaint. And, there’s nothing to keep the government from over reaching, according to Mozilla. It asserts that if the government can issue takedown requests for online news websites, online news aggregators and others — then they can take down anything they deem to be offensive, with only a few checks and balances in place. However, the new rules are not supported by sufficient accountability, says Mozilla. There are no safeguards in place to ensure that the rules themselves will not be misused just to silence opposing opinions, which may not necessarily be a ‘national security’ threat. “Given the many new provisions in these rules, we recommend that they should be withdrawn and be accompanied by wide ranging and participatory consultations with all relevant stakeholders prior to the notification,” said Tiwari. This doesn’t mean going out to buy a new SIM, but creating a second app-based ‘virtual’ number. “The only people that will have any kind of access to your primary number would be if we got an executive order from the official authorities,” <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/adityavuchi/?originalSubdomain=in">Aditya Vuchi</a>, founder and chief executive of Doosra told Business Insider. This means that if your social media handle is found to be a part of any activity, which violates Section 69 of the IT Act, the government or Supreme Court will first have to issue an order to the social media platform. If and once they discover that the mobile number given is a Doosra number, they will have to issue another order to Doosra in order to gain access to your primary number. Over time, mobile phone numbers turned identifiers for business databases — a way for them to keep track of their customers — before turning into an all out marketing tool. The Indian government’s mandate to use phone numbers as a way of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/policy/news/indias-new-rules-for-facebook-whatsapp-and-other-social-media-platforms-explained-in-five-points/articleshow/81285658.cms">‘voluntary’ verification</a> — a know-your-customer process, of sorts — for accessing these online platforms poses a new threat. “This means that any message you share on WhatsApp, Facebook and other platforms that is re-shared, makes your number that much more accessible to various databases, leading to spam from real estate offers, insurance scams, stalkers and worse,” said Vuchi. Addressing the deficit of trust The six-month old Doosra is the first such service to be available in India. It is not that other such apps don’t exist — like 2ndLine, Hushed, and Burner — but you need an American or Canadian number in order to sign up for them. Doosra caters to numbers based out of India. You need your real number to sign up for the service, and it is not free with plans starting at ₹59 per month for essential services and ₹83 per month for the pro package. The Doosra number can be used to sign up for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/apps/news/whatsapp-signal-and-telegram-face-a-catch-22-situation-as-indias-new-social-media-rules-threaten-encryption/articleshow/81221070.cms">WhatsApp</a>, Twitter and others or given for Aadhaar, banking details and subscriptions. This is because all of these services require an OTP for verification and Doosra logs all the incoming messages on your <keyword id="10867302" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="secondary-number">secondary number</keyword>. “I bought a car very recently. And, throughout the entire cycle, neither the sales guy or the paperwork guy has access to my primary number. They only had access to my Doosra number,” said Vuchi. According to him, most people using the app so far are addressing a ‘deficit of trust’. They’re uncertain of how their number will be used — or misused — if they give it out to a third party, which is not surprising considering that when you go online to shop for insurance, at a portal like PolicyBazaar, they want you to share your number before you can even compare rates and figure out what you want. The startup did not share the exact number of subscribers it has so far, but Vuchi did disclose that Doosra has seen just shy of a million messages and around 25,000 business sender IDs have been detected. “We can’t see what the messages are, but we do know when businesses reach out to the consumers” he explained. The key clientele so far has been small business owners, sales professionals, and, in some cases, actors too. But with the walls closing in around a person’s digital identity and privacy turning into a luxury that very few can afford — Doosra expects business to boom in the future. <ul><li>Being compliant with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulations (<keyword id="2556126" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="GDPR">GDPR</keyword>) won’t necessarily mean that companies are compliant with India’s upcoming <keyword id="431014" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Personal-Data-Protection">Personal Data Protection</keyword> Bill (PDP).</li><li>The scope of the PDP is broader and will require companies to make changes to their data management policies in order to operate in India.</li><li>Once PDP comes into effect, GDPR compliant companies may only have to make a few changes but new laws will be a sea-change for companies who were only compliant to the existing Indian data protection laws.</li></ul>India is ready to take a stab at formulating its first laws to govern data and it is using the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) as the template. And, for companies operating in India, this could end up being a stick in the mud. While GDPR and India’s <keyword id="458689" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="personal-data">Personal Data</keyword> Protection Bill (PDP) are similar in many ways, the differences between them mean that a company which is compliant in Europe may not necessarily be compliant under the PDP. “The PDP scope of application is broader than that of the GDPR as an entity will fall within scope merely by processing personal data in India when compared to that of GDPR,” Neeraj Dubey, a partner of corporate law at Singh &amp; Associates told Business Insider. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="81422687" title="India’s new data protection bill makes a good show of user rights — but can it deliver on its promises?" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> A broader definition of <keyword id="8418566" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sensitive-personal-data">sensitive personal data</keyword> Unlike the GDPR, the PDP has divided data into three categories — personal data, sensitive personal data, and <keyword id="10928418" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="critical-personal-data">critical personal data</keyword>. The latter is particularly important since there is no parallel for it in Europe’s laws and it comes with its own unique set of terms and conditions, like being obligated to data localisation. Moreover, India has thrown a wider net over what constitutes sensitive personal data as compared to the GDPR. A company may have to comply even if it merely processes personal data in India, and doesn’t collect the data locally, according to law firm <a href="https://www.privacysecurityacademy.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Comparison-Chart-GDPR-vs.-India-PDPB-2019-Jan.-16-2020.pdf">Covington and Burling.</a> For instance, financial data has been categorised under sensitive personal data. “This is an area of concern as processing of sensitive personal data involves greater compliance requirements. Consequently, the large innovations in fintech space, which is currently being observed in India, may get affected,” points out Supratim Chakraborty, a partner specialising in data privacy and protection at Khaitan &amp; Co. This means even if companies are GDPR compliant, they will have more sorting and more rules to abide by. Government stronghold on critical personal data Not only is critical personal data a new category altogether, companies have to make sure that it is exclusively stored and processed in India. In order to transfer any data that falls into that category outside of India, firms will need additional approval from the Data Protection Authority (DPA) and the Supervisory Authority. “Therefore, compliance with the GDPR may not result in compliance with the PDP, since transfer outside India will depend on approvals and permissions, either by the DPA or the central government,” noted <a href="https://www.mondaq.com/india/privacy/903076/comparative-analysis-general-data-protection-regulation-2016-and-the-personal-data-protection-bill-2019">Ikigai Law</a>. Government intervention doesn’t stop there. The GDPR doesn’t lay out any terms and conditions to monitor anonymised data. The PDP, however, allows the central government to access non-personal data as long as it’s to frame policies in the interest of the ‘digital economy’. For users, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/indias-new-data-protection-bill-makes-a-good-show-of-user-rights-but-can-it-deliver-on-its-promises/articleshow/81422687.cms">this a bigger question of privacy</a>. Meanwhile, for companies, it implies that anonymisation standards may differ between the two frameworks. “Given the current ambiguity in several key provisions of the PDP, the overreaching powers given to the executive, and the exemptions granted to it under the PDP, adequate safeguards and checks and balance are required to be built into the legislation to prevent any misuse of its provisions” said Namita Viswanath, a partner at IndusLaw. The question of consent While one can understand the requirement of having terms and conditions available to users in multiple languages, especially in a country as diverse as India — it means a lot more work for companies collecting data. While firms only need to cough up consent in English under the GDPR, they will have to arrange for multiple languages under the PDP. India’s data protection framework also proposes setting up ‘consent managers’ — a new type of entity of channelling consent. “Data principal [user] may give or withdraw consent through a “consent manager” whereas no such provision exists under GDPR,” explained Dubey. The PDP, on the other hand, proposes that data can be retained for longer stretches of time if the user consents or if required in compliance with any obligation under the law. India’s bill also allows companies to process data for ‘reasonable purposes’. However, unlike the GDPR’s ‘legitimate interests’ — which are clearly outlayed — a purpose will be deemed ‘reasonable’ only by the overarching authority, the DPA. This leaves companies with a lot of grey area, in which to operate. “The term ‘reasonable purpose’ is extremely broad and has been left to the subsequent prescription by the DPA, while under the GDPR, the scope of ‘legitimate interest’ can be determined by data controllers on a case-to-case basis,” said Viswanath. To tell or not to tell — who has the power? Under the GDPR, all breaches are to be reported to supervisory authority and to the users as well. India, however, won’t require users to be informed by law. In the case of a data breach, a data company will only have to inform the end users if the DPA deems it so. “Many provisions under the PDP have been left open-ended and for the Central Government or the Data Protection Authority to notify subsequently, leaving a huge scope for potential misuse and room for ongoing regulatory uncertainty,” said Viswanath. Being GDPR compliant doesn't necessarily make companies ready for India's upcoming data protection laws

<ul><li>India’s <keyword id="2617070" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Personal-Data-Protection-Bill">Personal Data Protection Bill</keyword>, 2019 is likely to be placed in front of Parliament sometime this month.</li><li>The underlying goal of the proposed laws is to assign rights to users over the collecting, storage and usage of their information.</li><li>However, vague language and open-ended clauses leave room for government overreach and resulting misuse.</li></ul>When it comes to data privacy it looks like users have every option available to them except for the one they want — control over their data. This includes knowing who’s collecting data, where it’s being stored, how it’s being used and what can be done if it's misused instead. There have been one too many instances where personal information, anonymised or not, has been used with bad intentions. One prominent example from recent history was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/the-cambridge-analytica-whistleblower-explains-how-the-firm-used-facebook-data-to-sway-elections/articleshow/71461113.cms">Cambridge Analytica</a>’s use of data from Facebook to profile voters during the 2016 US Presidential election. With the recent increase in cyber crimes, the government of India is coming up with its own data protection laws, which officials claim is based on the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). Any data that can identify an individual — either directly or indirectly — is covered under the <keyword id="4839724" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="data-protection-bill">Data Protection Bill</keyword>, 2019. This includes names, addresses, financial information, IP addresses, cookies, device IDs and other data. Hobson’s choice that Indian internet users face The bill outlines that an organisation needs to tell an individual from before collecting or using their data. The exceptions to this are if the data is processed under law or court order, for purposes related to employment or for a ‘reasonable’ purpose specified by the Data Protection Authority (DPA) — the nodal organisation that will be looking after the entire framework. Reasonable purposes include the operation of search engines, fraud prevention, mergers and acquisitions, and credit scoring but is not limited to any prescribed scope of activity. Moreover, clause 91 of the bill allows the central government to access anonymised or non-personal data to frame policies in the internet of the ‘digital economy’. “Such provisions show that the proposed law is far more interested in treating data as a resource,” noted the Internet Freedom Foundation (<a href="https://internetfreedom.in/essential-features-of-a-rights-respecting-data-protection-law/">IFF</a>). This indicates that there is still considerable scope for a user’s data to get collected without their consent. The only difference is that instead of a private company exploiting your personal details, it will be the government with little in its way to stop overreach. Even ‘critical’ and ‘sensitive’ data — such as religion, age, gender and other personality identifiers — may be available to the government in the interest of ‘national security’. The vaguely worded clause leaves room for misuse, according to <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/opinion/columns/personal-data-protection-bill-2019-privacy-laws-7135832/">critics</a>. User rights under the Personal Data Protection Bill: <ul><li>The right to obtain confirmation from the fiduciary on whether their personal data has been processed.*</li><li>The right to seek correction of inaccurate, incomplete, or out-of-date personal data.</li><li>The right to have personal data transferred to any other data fiduciary in certain circumstances</li><li>The right to restrict continuing disclosure of their personal data by a fiduciary, if it is no longer necessary or consent is withdrawn.</li></ul>*A data fiduciary is an entity or individual who decides the means and purpose of processing personal data. With its new set of laws, India hopes to cover all issues under the ambit of the DPA. If there is ever any breach of personal data, the organisation in-charge will have to inform the DPA. After that, however, the apex body will be in charge of deciding whether the data breach should be communicated to the affected users or direct the company to mitigate the threat. The decision making is still not in favour of the users themselves. Moverover, the independence of the DPA has also been <a href="https://thewire.in/tech/india-data-protection-authority-needs-constitutional-entrenchment">called into question</a>. The members that comprise the DPA includes a chairperson and six committee members, which will be appointed by the central government on the recommendation of a selection committee. The committee itself is formed by senior civil servants, including the Cabinet Secretary. Critics claim that the government has too much power to appoint and remove members at its discretion. This also implies a level of ability to influence the members of the DPA and the underlying committee. The Hobson’s choice in front of internet users in India is whether they’re okay with information being used by private companies to make a profit or to hand data over to the government with whom many are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/what-is-facial-recognition-technology-and-how-india-is-using-it-to-track-down-protestors-and-individuals/articleshow/80782606.cms">facing a trust deficit</a>.
