Issues related to data privacy and rising <keyword id="20127272" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-frauds" source="keywords">online frauds</keyword> are emerging as significant hurdles in the growth of e-commerce in India, said the <keyword id="20613906" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Economic-Survey" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Economic Survey" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Economic Survey">Economic Survey</keyword> 2023-24 tabled in Parliament on Monday. Citing third-party data, the survey said that the e-commerce industry in India is expected to cross USD 350 billion by 2030 and called for the need to educate users on the safe use of e-commerce platforms. "The rise of e-commerce is constrained by inadequate skills required for online selling, such as cataloguing. <keyword id="22505774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="data-privacy-issues" source="keywords">Data privacy issues</keyword> and increasing online fraud have turned out to be the most significant hurdle in the growth of e-commerce in India. It becomes imperative to educate users on the safe use of e-commerce platforms," the survey said. The survey mentioned that India's e-commerce market has gained significant momentum during the past few years, owing to technological advancements, evolving new-age business models coupled with government initiatives like the Digital India program, UPI, One District - One Product (ODOP), Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), new foreign trade policy, easing of FDI limits and Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) (Amendment) Rules 2021. It has identified data privacy and <keyword id="19906883" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cybersecurity" source="keywords">cybersecurity</keyword> as critical concerns in the <keyword id="22505776" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digitisation-of-services" source="keywords">digitisation of services</keyword> in the country and called for adopting strong security measures, compliance with privacy regulations, and innovation, among others. "Data privacy and cybersecurity have become critical concerns with the increasing digitisation of services," according to the survey. It said that the government is spearheading data protection laws and cybersecurity policies to safeguard consumer data and strengthen cybersecurity measures in the services sector. "To further embrace technology with confidence, ensuring the adoption of strong security measures, compliance with privacy regulations, and fostering innovation in security technologies are essential," the survey noted. It said the future of e-commerce is built on the enhanced <keyword id="20290101" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="user-experience" source="keywords">user experience</keyword> through <keyword id="19899640" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI" source="keywords">AI</keyword>, seamless <keyword id="21332958" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-payment-methods" source="keywords">digital payment methods</keyword>, innovations like UPI, and business engineering data analytics for business operations and enhancements. The survey mentioned that the buyer ecosystem in India is evolving at a very sharp rate, and business models will need to innovate to serve the needs of a diverse shopper base regarding service expectations, price sensitivity and language requirements. "Local language platforms are needed as the shopper base expands to tier-2 and tier-3 cities. Growing startups and innovative social media platforms provide an opportunity to test unique business models that might be targeted to specific demographic cohorts," the survey said.

When you woke up this morning, it is likely that one of the first things you reached for was your phone, whether to scroll through the news, catch up on your messages or simply check the time. This reminds me of a time when things were very different. In my childhood, a telephone was not something you got easily. You needed to apply for one and wait in the queue till it was assigned to you. Sometimes, for months, or even years. Today, it’s hard to imagine that such a scenario existed, when the world wasn’t, literally, at your fingertips. Our phones now serve multiple purposes, from making and receiving calls, their original ‘calling’ (tongue firmly in cheek!), listening to music, ordering food or groceries, booking your transport, checking emails, taking photos, storing phone numbers, and the list goes on as every day there seems to be more that you can do with your phone. The telephone has evolved from its humble and simple beginnings as a rather clunky part of your furniture to the sleek, modern all-in-one device that you hold in your hand. The ‘World Wide Web (www)’ that we have accepted as an intrinsic part of our lives has also evolved, as technology and connectivity improved. It started becoming more accessible in the early 1990s. The web initially consisted of simple content that was primarily text-based. This worked well, considering that, in those days, you depended on a dial-up connection with extremely limited speeds to access the web. Patience was a virtue that you had to practice. Some of the popular websites that come to mind are Yahoo and AOL, which made news and financial information easily available to us. In the early noughties, there was a move to user-generated content as social media platforms such as Orkut, MySpace and Facebook gained popularity. These platforms provided us with a way to connect and share our news, views and updates with friends and family from across the globe. The upgrade from slow dial-up to high-speed broadband options played a key role too. This brings us to the present, when we have high-speed networks not only for computers but also on our phones. Information and data are available at the click of a button or even with just voice commands or requests. Reports from earlier this year say that the global Web3 market is expected to see phenomenal compound annual growth of 67% in the next few years, from 5 trillion dollars this year to almost 40 trillion in 2025. Blockchain technology, smart/intelligent contracts, Decentralised Finance (DeFi), Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), and metaverses are hailed as the inevitable disruptions required to move the web forward into the future. Just as the current mobile phones are a far cry from the initial vision of Alexander Graham Bell who was awarded the first telephone patent, Web3 will be very different from the web that was invented by Sir Tim Berners-Lee. As with anything new, there are several mountains that need to be scaled along the way. Web3 developers are working on improving aspects such as: User experience: Users currently enjoy easy access to the web. Graphical user interfaces have been developed and improved to the extent that users can seamlessly interact with the interface to accomplish what they set out to do. The Web3 user experience, however, leaves a lot to be desired. Users are yet to be able to easily access Web3 and intuitively engage with it. Data privacy and security: While Web3 gives users transparency and connectivity, the other side of the coin is to ensure that the privacy and security of data remain uncompromised. Since the control will be decentralised, a proper system of checks and balances will have to be built to keep data secure. Environmental impact: Another aspect that Web3 is struggling to address is the sheer amount of energy it uses as decentralised networks use complex infrastructure with high energy needs. Efforts are being made to make Web3 sustainable and eco-friendly. Compatibility and scalability: The decentralised nature of Web3 brings with it the challenge of compatibility issues between the various blockchains and this becomes a natural stumbling block to the scalability of the technology. Web3 advocates are hard at work to iron out the various complex challenges that currently stand in the way of its widespread adoption. Slowly but surely, solutions are being found to the obstacles. The push towards Web3 is gradually gathering momentum as many countries plan to invest in research and adoption of the <a href="https://www.infosysbpm.com/offerings/business-transformation-services/insights/documents/a-shot-in-the-arm-for-sscs.pdf">technology</a> in the near future. The upcoming Digital Personal Data Protection <keyword id="19032" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="bill" source="Orion">Bill</keyword> will drive "deep behavioural changes" among those platforms in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> that have for long exploited or misused personal data, <keyword id="6357801" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="union" source="Orion">Union</keyword> minister <keyword id="205969" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rajeev-chandrasekhar" source="Orion">Rajeev Chandrasekhar</keyword> has asserted. In an interview to PTI, the minister of state for IT and electronics also sought to allay concerns around the issue of government-appointed fact check body, saying the move is not about censorship at all, rather it gives the Centre an opportunity to clarify and respond to any <keyword id="535763" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="misinformation" source="Orion">misinformation</keyword> related to it, something that is critical in a democracy. Misinformation, he said, is not to be confused with right to free speech. The minister noted that misinformation tends to travel 10-15 times faster, and reaches an audience 20-50 times more, than truth. He emphasised that it is absolutely critical that in a democracy if someone says something false about the government, to create hatred, to incite violence, or to just create mistrust, "the government must have an opportunity to say no, this is not true". "So there is no censorship, there no restriction on free speech. This is simply about saying what is patently false, is patently false. And that is certainly not to be confused or deliberately distorted to imply that this is a crackdown on free speech," Chandrasekhar said. The minister's comment assumes significance as the decision to notify an entity that will flag false information posted online pertaining to the government has raised concerns in some quarters on whether it gives government absolute powers. "I think there is some misunderstanding about what it is we are trying to do," the minister said when asked about the issue. "Misinformation is expressly an area that has already been prescribed in the rules as an area that platforms have to do significant work in moderating misinformation if they are to enjoy Section 79 protection. It is already mandated in the rules of October 2022," he said. Rather, the fact check unit aims to help platforms in identifying false content posted about the government. "It is not an opinion. It is not about saying that we will create another narrative about the government," Chandrasekhar added. On the digital personal data protection (DPDP) bill, which will be introduced in the coming session of <keyword id="6354721" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="parliament" source="Orion">Parliament</keyword>, the minister said the draft legislation has undergone a lot of consultation and is designed as "a truly world class piece of legislation". "I have absolutely no doubt that the DPDP Bill will create deep behavioural changes among platforms in India who have for long exploited and misused personal data," the minister said. At the same time, those who have played fair will not get affected, and will continue to do the right thing, he observed. "Those who have done it (misused data), tracked consumers, used cookies they certainly will have to go though deep behavioural change... Those who are already doing it right, have nothing to fear. But those who have, in a sense, lived off this model of exploitation will certainly have to reconsider," minister said. He expressed hope that the bill will come up in the Monsoon session of Parliament. The draft bill - which has seen an overhaul after its withdrawal in August last year - details the citizen's rights on personal data, with provisions that makes entities handling personal data accountable for managing it with safety and security in a responsible manner. "The purpose of this bill is to provide for the processing of digital personal data in a manner that recognises the right of individuals to protect their personal data, the need to process personal data for lawful purposes and for other incidental purposes," an explanatory note of the draft bill said. The proposed data protection legislation allows the transfer and storage of personal data in some countries while raising the penalty for violations. The proposed legislation stipulates consent before collecting personal data and provides for stiff penalties of as much as Rs 500 crore on persons and companies that fail to prevent data breaches including accidental disclosures, sharing, altering or destroying personal data. On being asked about Meta being fined a record-breaking USD 1.3 billion recently by European Union regulators for violating EU privacy laws, and whether India too can look at large financial deterrants for Big Tech for non-compliance of laws, the Minister said idea is not about competing with the EU on size of penalties. "I don't think we are in the business of competing with the EU in terms of the size of the penalty, but the formulation of penalties in this Bill is sufficient to incentivise every data fiduciary or any platform to behave correctly, to follow the law, and do the right thing," he said. The days when platform could exploit the data of consumers is fast coming to an end, he said, adding there are many powers under the bill that have been given to the Indian consumer to interrogate, search, check what data the platforms have. "...and I think certainly it's a balance of protecting the consumer rights, as well as continuing to allow innovation and investments," the minister said. On WhatsApp spam call issue, Chandrasekhar said that the government has called out to WhatsApp and other messenger companies about the problem and emphasised that it is unacceptable. "They have responded with alacrity and responded very quickly. They are searching out many solutions. We have also asked them to give to us what are the overseas telecom carriers from where these originate, so that we can talk to BSNL, and to our own <keyword id="150664" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="telecom-department" source="Orion">Telecom Department</keyword> to make sure that these carriers are also warned that there is unlawful activities originating from their networks, and that if that continues, we may have to look at some kind of a discussion of whether those networks will be allowed to terminate in India as well," he said. The government and players are not adversaries, rather they work in partnership, he said, adding that a safe and trusted internet for 1.2 billion consumers "is good for business, government, and for citizens". New Delhi, There is a surge in hiring for cybersecurity-related roles including data, automation, security, compliance, risk, and relationships in the second quarter of 2023, reflecting a 34 per cent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) since 2020, according to a report on Monday. The job analytics database of GlobalData, a data and analytics company, showed a notable shift in the pharmaceutical industry as companies are increasingly prioritising the adoption of emerging technologies and stringent compliance measures to safeguard against cyber threats and data breaches. An analysis of Company Filing Analytics Database revealed that cybersecurity dominated pharma industry discussions during Q2 2023 as well amid the push for digital transformation. "The growing digital engagement, coupled with the rising occurrence of data breaches, has prompted pharma companies to place a heightened emphasis on roles geared towards minimising enterprise risks. These roles aim to advocate privacy measures and develop cybersecurity strategies that enhance the comprehension of privacy-related risks linked to emerging technologies," said Misa Singh, Business Fundamentals Analyst at GlobalData, in a statement. In August, the global pharmaceutical industry experienced a 19 per cent rise in new job postings related to cybersecurity in Q2 2023 compared with the previous quarter, the report said. "In an era where data is the lifeblood of the pharmaceutical industry, the shift towards embracing technology and fortifying cybersecurity measures is not just a strategic move but a critical imperative. As we navigate this transformative landscape, these cybersecurity-related roles serve as the guardians of our digital future, ensuring privacy, compliance, and resilience in the face of evolving challenges," Singh added.

The report works on the fact that <keyword id="6715869" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="data-regulations" source="Orion">data regulations</keyword> will cover information about 75% of the global population over the next two years. “By year-end 2024, Gartner predicts that 75% of the world’s population will have its data covered under modern privacy regulations. This regulatory evolution has been the dominant catalyst for the operationalization of privacy,” said Nader Henein, VP Analyst at Gartner. “Since most organizations do not have a dedicated privacy practice, the responsibility for operationalizing these requirements is passed onto technology, more specifically security, under the umbrella of the CISO’s office.” In this period, companies will need to budget for data privacy at an annual average of more than $2.5 million. This would include privacy programmes, technology, and skills to ensure compliance with increasingly strict regulations. The focus will need to be on these aspects: Data Localization This will be a critical focus since privacy laws seem to be heterogeneous, and the context of privacy will need to be relevant to the country of operation. Since the launch of GDPR in 2018, over 60 jurisdictions globally have enacted or proposed privacy and data protection laws; countries that include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Panama, the US, Singapore and Thailand, and counting. Data localization will allow for the laws to be enforced as applicable in any particular region. This will increasingly become the priority for data privacy planning. Use of Privacy-Enhancing Computation (PEC) With the increasing proliferation of AI models and the complexity of data gathered through these channels, a tool for safer data processing and analyzing data will be desirable. This would help overcome the challenges due to multiparty data sharing, working with data from risky origins or doubtful bases. Gartner states that PEC will be commonly used over the next two years in large companies for business analytics, intelligence, or computing analytics. Adoption of AI Governance AI-based modules have been found very efficient for data analytics but research has shown an increased risk of data privacy breaches through them. Most of the AI processing in companies today takes very little cognizance of the data leakages it might inadvertently allow. The need of the hour is strict AI regulations and governance, and enterprises are becoming aware of this need very fast. Over the next two years, companies will bring together all aspects of data privacy and integrate them into a single, easily manageable, and transparent UX portal for data and consent management. By 2023, a third of all organizations will have adopted this strategy. One of the basic tasks of enterprise infrastructure will be a platform that will be handling the requests and the processes for consent and preference management (CPM). CXO Reshuffle in the New Normal As the world opens up after two years of the pandemic, the surfeit of data-driven by rapid and urgent digital transformations across the board- will need a whole new paradigm to handle privacy. In addition to the CPM and PEC, there will be the Chief Privacy Officer (CPO) or the Chief Data Privacy Officer, to manage the entire nine yards of data privacy- compliances, tools, technologies, customer connections, and safe business analytics. The new role is now beginning to take shape over the next two years, it will be a normal designation. The Advent of Data-protection-as-a-Service (DPaaS) Leveraging the panic around the gargantuan volumes of data being generated by unplanned and in many cases, knee-jerk digitization, many companies are now offering a Ready-to-go Data Protection Kit, as a service model. The market for DPaaS is expected to touch USD 19 billion by 2026. The demand for this service will burgeon in the coming months, because of its inherent ability to offer scalable, flexible, agile data privacy and management tools, at optimized cost. With privacy and security now taking the same path, there will also be rapid adoption of Data and Privacy management services. As workplaces become hybrid for a much longer-term than earlier anticipated, the risks of data proliferation, as well as privacy of market or consumer data, have become much higher. Over the last two years, companies have created their solutions to meet the challenge of data privacy and secure access, and over the next two years, they will reap the benefits of this foresight.
