While they're there, they kiss, and she tells him that she wants to get back together with him.</p><p>But in the book, their relationship is purely platonic, and she doesn't really do anything to throw a wrench in Dash and Lily's budding romance. </p><p>Similarly, there's another <a href="https://www.insider.com/stars-whose-first-kiss-was-filmed-for-tv-or-movies">added kiss</a> on the show that ends up being quite dramatic. When Lily gets drunk at a bar with her caroling group on Christmas, Edgar kisses her, unfortunately, right when Dash walks in.</p><p>In the book, Dash goes to the bar and sees Lily and Edgar hanging out together - not kissing - but he's more upset that she drunkenly dropped their notebook on the floor than he is by Edgar's presence.</p><h2><strong>Lily doesn't get in trouble for getting drunk in the books</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="lily drinking dash and lily" height="1138" width="1517" msid="79155353" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>After finding Lily at the bar with Edgar and realizing <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-foods-to-eat-after-going-out-2019-2">how drunk she is</a>, Dash decides to take her to her great-aunt Mrs. Basil E's house because he knows she won't get in as much trouble there.</p><p>This works out well for the rebellious teen in the book because Mrs. Basil E lets her stay the night, but on the show, her grandfather picks her up and sees her drunk. </p><p>This is the main reason she gets in trouble with her family on the show, and primarily why her parents are going to make her move to Fiji with them for her father's new job. </p><h2><strong>The book's ending involves Dash and Lily being brought into police custody</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Dash and Lily - lily with dogs" height="580" width="776" msid="79155357" hostid="261"></div><p>In the book, Dash becomes a prime suspect on the WashingtonSquareMommies <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-parenting-and-pregnancy-apps-2018-3">blog</a> when he accidentally hits a child in the eye with a snowball after a group of kids instigate a fight with him.</p><p>After the snowball-fight incident - while they're still on the outs following the bar escapade - Lily and Dash run into each other while she's walking <a href="https://www.insider.com/biggest-dog-breeds-2018-12">a massive dog</a> named Boris.</p><p>The dog drags them to Washington Square Park, charges the same kid that Dash hit with a snowball - evident by his eye patch - and knocks over a nearby stroller, sending the baby inside soaring. </p><p>Luckily, Lily catches and saves the baby, but the parents recognize Dash and accuse him and Lily of trying to kidnap the child. After they call the cops, Dash, Lily, and Boris are taken to the station in a squad car so the police can review the video footage from the park.</p><p>Though Dash and Lily aren't charged with anything, the incident still makes the news, and Lily's parents and grandfather aren't happy when they find out about it - which is a major reason for her punishment in the book. </p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/dash-and-lily-differences-between-book-and-show">None of the above</a> happens on the show at all.</p><h2><strong>Dash and Lily's New Year's Eve plans go down much differently on the show - but both are pretty romantic</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="lily cab dash and lily" height="1315" width="1754" msid="79155358" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>On the show, Lily's parents come home early from their vacation to celebrate Christmas with their family and make dramatic plans to move to Fiji on New Year's Eve.</p><p>Three hours before midnight, Lily and her parents get in a cab that's headed to the airport, and she doesn't see Dash's note about meeting at The Strand to celebrate the holiday and say goodbye.</p><p>When her brother Langston finally texts her a picture of the message Dash left in the notebook, she hops out of the cab without explaining anything to her parents and runs through the <a href="https://www.insider.com/new-york-city-biggest-misconceptions-2019-8">crowded streets of New York City</a> to meet him. </p><div type="image" title="dash and lily new years eve the strand" height="1326" width="1767" msid="79155359" hostid="261"></div><p>Inside The Strand, Dash has <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-not-to-do-in-a-bookstore-according-to-employees-2020-2">filled the bookstore</a> with decorations and food inspired by their notebook dares so Lily can relive their version of NYC one last time before her move.</p><p>They kiss in the festively decorated bookstore where their love story began before Lily realizes they've accidentally <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-you-should-not-do-new-years-day-2017-12">locked themselves inside</a>.</p><p>After she gets ahold of her grandpa - who tells her she can stay in NYC with him and her great-aunt instead of moving to Fiji - they snuggle up in the window and watch New Year's Eve fireworks.</p><p>New Year's Eve goes down differently in the book since Lily's parents are on their way back from their Fiji vacation and there's no impending threat of getting on a plane at midnight.</p><p>Dash and Lily meet up with each other much earlier in the day <a href="https://www.insider.com/unique-things-to-do-on-a-date-2019-4">for a cooking date</a> at Boomer's famous aunt's celebrity kitchen. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Insider spoke to <keyword id="6122314" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Austin-Abrams">Austin Abrams</keyword>, who plays <a href="https://www.insider.com/cast-of-dash-and-lily-and-who-they-play">Dash on Netflix's "Dash and Lily"</a> about what it was really like working on the festive series.</li><li>Abrams said he and Midori Francis, who plays Lily, shared a notebook while filming in order to build up their chemistry.</li><li>His favorite scene to shoot was in the Morgan Library at night and he said some of the hardest ones to film involved turning pages in the red notebook. </li></ul><p>Although you may know him from dark and intense projects, Austin Abrams is the star of <keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword>'s latest holiday romance, <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/freelancer%20dash-and-lily">"Dash and Lily."</a></p><p>Abrams, who has previously appeared on shows like "The Walking Dead," "This Is Us," and "Euphoria" and the films "Chemical Hearts" and "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," plays the titular Dash, a snarky, holiday-hating teen with plenty of charm. </p><p>Based on the young-adult book by David Levithan and Rachel Cohn, the series follows two teens as they send one another on romantic adventures throughout New York City via journal entries in a notebook that they pass back and forth. </p><p>Abrams spoke to Insider about all things "<keyword id="10249054" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="dash-and-lily">Dash and Lily</keyword>," including what it was like filming on location in NYC, how he and <a href="https://www.insider.com/cast-of-dash-and-lily-and-who-they-play">castmate Midori Francis</a> cultivated their characters' chemistry, and more. </p><p><strong>Many fans know you from darker shows and films. What was it like filming something so festive and cheerful? </strong></p><p>It was a little bit of a tone shift. I had to remind myself, <a href="https://www.insider.com/cool-things-you-didnt-know-about-zendaya-2019-8">"This isn't 'Euphoria.'"</a> I had to understand the tone of what we were making and try to do that as best as possible.</p><p><strong>Dash is pretty anti-holiday. Do you relate to that aspect of your character?</strong> </p><p>No, not necessarily. I'm definitely not as staunchly opposed to it as he is.</p><p>I mean, I enjoy being with family, which I think is a big reason why he hates the holidays so much — because he doesn't really have that so I think that's really his hatred for it. But I don't feel the same way at all. </p><div type="image" title="Dash and Lily - Dash eating" height="2202" width="2937" msid="79153130" hostid="261"></div><p><strong><a href="https://www.insider.com/dash-and-lily-differences-between-book-and-show">Since the show is based on a book</a>, were there any aspects of the written character you wanted to change? Any you wanted to be sure to maintain? </strong></p><p>I think the biggest thing was making sure the tone of the character was there. I think in the book he's described as a "scowl in a sweater" or something like that.</p><p>So that was a balance of keeping that tone and energy but also making him a person that you're interested in watching for a whole season. </p><div type="image" title="Dash and Lily - Dash on the Santa subway" height="2256" width="3008" msid="79153136" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Aside from reading the book, did you do anything to prepare for the role?</strong></p><p>There was definitely a lot of work involved when it came to working with our writer and series creator, Joe Tracz, which I really enjoyed. It was great because he's so collaborative — that was definitely a big thing for me. </p><p><strong>In terms of collaborative, does that mean you got to have input on the scripts? </strong></p><p>Yeah. He was open to getting our input, hearing our thoughts, and really trying to talk about everything as much as possible.</p><p>I enjoy working closely with the people I'm making something with. It's fun. I love working that way and really being on the same page with everyone I'm working with about what we're making. </p><p><strong>Dash and Lily don't meet in person until the last few episodes. How did you and Midori Francis, who played Lily, build chemistry even though you weren't together often on the set? </strong></p><p>During filming, we shared our own little notebook of writings — kind of personal things to help develop a sense of trust and to get to know each other.</p><p>We tried to mirror what was happening in the show a little bit. That was helpful in getting to know one another and creating that connection. </p><p><strong>What was it like working on location in the fall and winter in NYC? </strong></p><p>It was great. Tracz really <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-restaurants-chefs-eat-at-in-nyc-2019-4">loves the geography of New York</a>, so he really wanted to capture that as honestly as he possibly could.</p><p>We did pretty much what is done by the characters in the show. We went to all of those places. It was really great and I appreciated the production team's desire to keep it as authentic as possible. </p><p><strong>The show really showcased a lot of iconic NYC landmarks. Which was your favorite to film at? </strong></p><p>I really enjoyed The Morgan Library and Museum because we were able to be in the museum at three in the morning and have it to ourselves. You don't get that opportunity too often.</p><p><strong>So that wasn't production magic? You were actually there overnight? </strong></p><p>Oh, yeah! We had to turn the page just right because the shot is so close up. It took a bit of time to get that just right.</p><p><strong>That makes sense since the notebook is such an important part of the series. Did you write Dash's entries yourself or was that done by someone in production?</strong></p><p>It was written mostly by production, but I may have written some of it myself. </p><div type="image" title="dash and lily the red book" height="628" width="837" msid="79153138" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>What's your favorite memory from working on the show? </strong></p><p>I enjoyed working on the scripts and being in the moment of that creative process and seeing the storylines change in certain ways because of the help I was able to give. That was quite fulfilling to be able to help in that way. </p><p><strong>Lastly, if you had to send someone on a dare in New York City, where would that be and what would you send them to do? </strong></p><p>I'd probably send them to a jazz club. 'Dash and Lily' star Austin Abrams shares on-set memories and behind-the-scenes secrets from the show

"She has very strong instincts as a storyteller and knows what she believes in."</p><p>"Chemical Hearts" centers on 17-year-old Henry Page (Austin Abrams), who has never been in love. By the start of his senior year, Henry says that nothing interesting or noteworthy has ever happened to him, despite the teen years supposedly being the most thrilling time of a person's life. That all changes when he meets Grace Town (Reinhart), a mysterious transfer who becomes his co-editor for the school's newspaper. </p><div type="image" title="chemical hearts lili reinhart austin abrams grace henry 3" height="1666" width="2500" msid="77665264" hostid="261"></div><p>Tanne said that Reinhart, who also served as a first-time executive producer on the film, sent the project over to him after she read the novel and was interested in portraying Grace. From the start of production, the pair were on the same page, which Tanne said made the process even more seamless. </p><p>"We set out to make this movie together," the director told us. "I had a very specific vision that she got behind and that made a really big difference. All the choices that I made, having the backing of the star is a very influential tool at your disposal."</p><p>He continued: "We were aligned. We were constantly in dialogue and I would say that her instincts as an actress and as a writer herself, that's an added bonus because you have someone who's always asking for the truth. She's always trying to get at the truth, and that's where I'm coming from too, so it worked out well."</p><div type="image" title="chemical hearts lili reinhart austin abrams grace henry 2" height="1665" width="2500" msid="77665265" hostid="261"></div><p>Reinhart's search for honesty was another quality that made her the ideal person to take on a complicated and complex character. </p><p>"Lili's intensity, her intensity of feeling, her commitment to the truth, she's someone who's at once incredibly open and also has to be guarded because of what her life is, because of the reality of her life. These are things that mesh perfectly with Grace," Tanne told us.</p><p>Meanwhile, Tanne described Abrams as "someone that feels so deeply, so sensitively."</p><p>"He's somebody who in life, much like Lili, is incapable of a false note," the director said. "And then that translates to the screen too, just an authentic guy."</p><div type="image" title="chemical hearts henry page" height="1051" width="1401" msid="77665267" hostid="261"></div><p>Tanne added that "there are elements of both of them that match up perfectly" with their characters, and he had one piece of key feedback for the actors. </p><p>"My only condition for both of them was, 'Just open yourself up to the camera. Let us in. Let's try to move any veil of self-consciousness aside and let's just explore.'"</p><p>For his part, Abrams told Insider that he and the "Riverdale" actress worked together in the past, so they "already had somewhat of a rapport with one another," which made playing love interests easier. </p><p>"That was super helpful when it came to a connection and then I think we just have a general instant connection, which is something that you just kind of get lucky with," the actor, who stars on an upcoming Netflix series called "Dash &amp; Lily," told us.</p><p>"From project to project, sometimes that's there, other times it's not. But thankfully on this one, we just kind of got lucky in that way."</p><p>The movie, which will be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, is based on the 2016 book "Our Chemical Hearts," written by Krystal Sutherland. "P<span>lenty of attendees kept their conference badges on and stayed to party," Katz reported. </span></p><p><span>Katz quoted one crypto trader who said: </span><span>"We're a bunch of dudes with a lot of money in our 20s. We like naked girls."</span></p><p><span>The event, which was open to all conference attendees and sponsored by cryptocurrency Dash, made many women feel uncomfortable, Katz reported. </span></p><p>Zineb Belmkaddem, a crypto trader who decided not to attend the event, told Bloomberg it made her feel un-welcomed. </p><p>"There was a message being sent to women, that, 'OK, this isn't really your place,"' she said. "'This is where the boys roll.'"</p><p>One blockchain tech startup founder took to Twitter to share her experience at the event, where one person suggested she "get on stage." We, the immunized, survivors of the plague, are supposed to emerge from our Covid quarantines without hesitancy. The problem with this is that I was never Hot in the first place and this Summer is no different. </p><p>It's still just me, blinking hesitantly and shaking a little, sweating under my shapeless clothes and knowing that there are still people dying at war with their own lungs. </p><p>The truth is I am a <a href="https://twitter.com/chick_in_kiev/status/1187113670603661313?lang=en">Blob Girl</a>. I am part of a vast middle sector of womanhood who are pretty bad at Being <keyword id="624" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Women">Women</keyword> in the way that involves an arsenal of products and a wealth of knowledge to address every detail of our femininity with attention and care and perform it with the practiced grace of dancers. My <em>je ne sais quoi </em>is a literal translation: I don't know what it would take to have such a quality. </p><p>This summer, the humid air will press down on me like a sweaty hand and I, in the middle of it, will be as limp and unluscious as a two-day-old funnel cake. In a world of curation through layers of screens-in which even I, stale dough pinched into the rough approximation of a human woman, know my best selfie angles-it is difficult to admit it and still more difficult to hope that somewhere I have a tribe. </p><p>There is so much expectation, after more than a year locked inside. We were supposed to improve ourselves during our time away from the world. In a social milieu shaped by the bright relentless self-optimization of capital we are supposed to come out of our bedrooms-slash-workspaces thinner and shinier. </p><p>Except I didn't. For me, what's coming is Blob Girl Summer.</p><p>I know I am not alone, that there's a secret legion of grieving and unimproved femmes who have tried and failed to enter the halls of a kind of womanhood that is locked off to us. Somewhere there is a place, I imagine it to be not unlike the <a href="https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/547802">Temple of Dendur</a> in the Met, where the Hot Girls sleep at night in their sarcophagi. I could get my ticket my <keyword id="6360041" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="life">life</keyword> would change, and since I can't, I live an unchanged life. The last time I tried to sit on a stoop on a sunny day I sat in dog piss and I didn't even know, for hours. </p><p>For years I have tried to enter the temple, but I haven't tried hard enough, and I have a big furrow in my brow and wrinkly hands. So much of what Being A Woman is supposed to be is the ability to transfix and enchant, glances sticking to you like cobweb.</p><div type="image" title="Talia Temple" height="3451" width="5207" msid="82314004" hostid="261"></div><p>I was built for gazes to pass over, an awning is more exciting than me, a hot dog cart is more exciting than me, the little creatures in the rainwater coming out of the gutter that you can't see with the naked eye are nonetheless more visually arresting than I am. Am I a woman still? I have tried to be. </p><p>So <a href="https://projects.thecity.nyc/covid-19-deaths/">many people</a> have died this year, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/global-covid-deaths-3-million-surges-us-brazil-india-2021-4">millions,</a> and I have survived to take into my body a miraculous shot that is the very flower of medical science, a code written in my genome to lock out the great threat. And I, imbibing this, have the temerity to not even be sexy. If Vaxxed Girl Summer is meant to be a kind of pan-cultural Rumspringa I ought to be someone that transcends schlubhood under its thrilling aegis. And yet.</p><h3>A SUGGESTED RITUAL</h3><p>The proof of my failure is all around me, entombed in the room I rent. Somewhere in my possession is a pale blue container of Tatcha's The Water Cream, a moisturizer that goes for $68 for 1.7 fluid ounces. Within the pale unguent, the advertising copy states, are wild roses, and leopard lilies found "on the cool hillsides of Japan." The cream is thick and white, and the luxuriant vessel that holds it is accompanied by a gold-colored spoon, with which to smooth the pricey goop onto your face. There is a "suggested ritual" to accompany the cream: Camellia Cleansing Oil, Rice Polish, The Essence - $286 worth of salves and scours meant to alchemize one's face and decolletage into youthful, glowing perfection. I bought it, all of it, in a manic phase in the last year of my twenties.</p><p>I was a Blob Girl convinced I could be a Hot Girl and so I was attuned to the chatter all around me about skincare routines. There were articles about it - The Cut runs a repeating feature interrogating how various women "Get Her Skin So Good" (most are very rich or very young or both). I wanted in, and I read the articles, bought the best, as far as I could determine, among a blizzard of beauty guides laden with an intricate web of affiliate links. For a few nights I bathed my skin in these things, titrated them drop by drop onto the bags under my eyes, the sallow tops of my breasts, my unspeakable neck. But I had no discipline; it was just another dilettante's sally into a kind of femininity I had no real business taking part in.</p><p>By now I've mostly mostly hidden the serums away, feeling a vague shame about the whole thing. </p><p>I'm now 31, and I grew up when Heroin Chic was still the ideal of womanhood, hipbones protruding from low-rise jeans. The belated acknowledgement that flesh belongs adjacent to bones came late in my twenties, too late for me, and I continue to await a great cultural reset that hallows a body that looks like mine--an overstuffed couch dropped from a great height, a knockoff Venus of Willendorf made of plasticine. Somehow and somewhere (many somewheres, or everywhere) I learned that a perfect woman is a mirror that shows you precisely what you desire.  </p><p>Nonetheless I stand in my sack dress and Walmart sandals and tilt up my bare, pore-heavy face with its incipient jowls and admit with chagrin and little grace that I am not among the blessed. I am a Blob Femme, a creature half-made of envy and shame, whose breasts are incidental and pendulous. A woman sure she is a woman, but sure of little else.</p><p>To be a woman and do it <em>properly </em>is a job that requires both effort and skill. It can involve cash, yes, but also work - testing and curation, a keen awareness of audience and effect. Much can be done with simple and cost-effective material, and while its primary cultural exemplars are wealthy, looking fantastic isn't solely the provenance of the bourgeois. There is value to this work: learning the mysteries of the contour, differentiating foundations, finding the just-right nook of bone that blush ought to be applied to; assessing one's palette, knowing hair milk from hair gel from hair cream. There is work in building looks each day out of the raw material of simple clothing, and it is work I admire, and at which I lack talent and initiative. There is unimaginable amounts of work involved in sculpting a beguiling figure out of simple flesh. I do not denigrate it; I long for it, strive for it when I'm flush in mad dashes of acquisition. </p><div type="image" title="Talia Makeup school" height="3006" width="4008" msid="82314013" hostid="261"></div><p>I never learned how to be flat enough, silent enough, to be all winking, passive chrome. During the pandemic I was lucky enough to be cloistered; this privileged solitude left me alone with a mind that wouldn't stop buzzing, alone with a body that kept manufacturing its own insistent and extraneous desires. I know that there are many women who excel at both the labor of performed femininity. Who lust and take with grace, and who are as skilled in attaining their own pleasure as they are at giving pleasure away. Still, after this wearing year, a year of morgue-trucks and uncertainty and pain, I am still a woman unskilled at womanhood, not new to its arts but still humbler than an apprentice: A supplicant at the door of the temple.</p><p>The world calls me out into the light of Hot Vaxxed Girl Summer, to be warm and poised and lush, but the spring is still cold and I am frightened and frozen at the threshold. Each step I take from an isolation in which my body, being alone, had no locus of comparison, is a step back into a world of all-too-familiar shame. Forgiving myself for every untoward fold and hair, every lemurish attempt at eyeliner, every clumsy waddle on thighs like boiled dumplings, forgiving myself for being me, or even just for being, is its own ongoing labor. </p><p>Having survived through a plague I want to live every inch of my survival, the world my oyster and I, its irritant little pearl, the gem at the lip of the mantle, to be plucked out and buffed to shining nacre. Instead I'm the oyster, all slime in the throat, eating grit. Still, I lived. My body allowed me to hide and survive and, surely, for this it has earned a little grace.</p><p>Penelope, the wife of Odysseus, undid her weaving each night to ward off suitors and buy herself time. I too have much to unthread each time I close my door on the world. From the poor material of myself, I have to spin patience and a little kindness. Do your best, until you fail, and then try, try, again, for $19.95 - or whatever the price is.</p><p>But why do we buy into the idea that our everyday lives - complete with our daunting daily tasks - could resemble those of celebrities? Maybe a stay-at-home mom in San Francisco has unfettered access to top-notch ingredients and ample time on her hands, but the majority of us do not.</p><p><span>In fact, most of our lifestyles do not even closely resemble those of celebrities. (Nor do our houses.)</span></p><p><span>Further, I have found celebrity diets to be incredibly unrealistic. </span></p><p><span>Here are a few reasons why.</span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55c50c6f371d22c6178bca97-1663-831/tom-brady-gisele.jpg" alt="tom brady gisele" data-mce-source="Andrew H. Walker/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">The Gisele diet is not doable for most humans.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h3><strong>You don't have a personal chef.</strong></h3><p>Or maybe you do, who am I to know.</p><p>But assuming that you, like me, do not have a personal chef (and no, Seamless does not count as your personal chef) it's time consuming and difficult to simulate a celebrity's eating patterns.</p><p>When I tried what I'll call the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/gisele-bundchen-diet-2016-1" target="_blank">Gisele challenge</a>, the most obvious issue that stuck out to me was that I didn't know where to begin with meals. I didn't know what substitutions to make. I was bored, certainly not getting enough nutrients, and quite frankly, it was a miserable experience. </p><p>It also can be potentially risky if you're not preparing your food the right way. I don't just mean that you might undercook your chicken, but that if you're not balancing the amount of nutrients properly, you might not have energy to power through your day.</p><h3><strong>There's yet another caveat: dining like a celebrity is often expensive.</strong></h3><p><span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sakara-life-victorias-secret-diet-review-2015-12" target="_blank">Sakara Life</a> served up a mediocre dish, but for $109 a day? No thanks. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/soup-cleanse-review-2016-2" target="_blank">Soup cleanses</a> and juice cleanses are also pricey. And even strictly adhering to a celebrity food shopping plan - like Gisele and Tom Brady's -  won't help you; their budgets are have more wiggle room for discretionary avocados, fancy salts and oils, and organic starfruits than most of ours do.</span></p><h3><strong>These 'diets' are often wildly limiting, even they appear to look like 'lifestyles.'</strong></h3><p><span>Consider the no-salt-unless-it's-Himalayan-rock-salt rule from the Gisele and Tom diet as an example.</span></p><p><span>Perhaps these strict rules can adhered to in a nominally easier fashion if you have someone whipping up meals for you 'round the clock, but that probably still wouldn't bode well for your everyday, regular-person life.</span></p><p><span><span>That's not to say that I advocate the Cookie Diet (I don't), but I do condone diets that, within reason, permit wiggle room for happy hour and are reasonably affordable. Then, they can become actual lifestyles rather than quick fixes to fit into a dress - but the same could be said for any diet that puts large X's on food groups.</span></span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5665d91a84307658008b7ff1-2225-1669/sakara-1.jpg" alt="Sakara 1" data-mce-source="Hollis Johnson" /><p class="source"><span>Hollis Johnson</span></p><p class="caption">Celebrities like Lily Aldridge endorse Sakara Life.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><h3><strong>Experts say that dieting doesn't work.</strong></h3><p><span>Spoiler alert - you're doomed to fail as it is.</span></p><p><span>"What seems to be clear is that long-term diet adherence is abysmal, irrespective of whether low-fat or other diets... are prescribed," Kevin Hall of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases in Maryland, United States wrote, according to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/afp-low-fat-diets-not-best-for-weight-loss-study-2015-10" target="_blank">AFP</a>.</span></p><p><span><span>When </span><a href="http://health.usnews.com/best-diet" target="_blank">US News &amp; World Report</a><span> ranked the </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/us-news-and-world-report-best-diets-ranking-2016-1" target="_blank">"best" diets</a><span>, the ones that came out on top were ones that were sustainable and weren't heavy on eliminating foods, like the DASH and MIND diets. </span></span></p><h3><strong>So these so-called "lifestyles" are not sustainable in the long run.</strong></h3><p><span><span><span>Celebrity diets - with their high prices and bizarre rules - might be sustainable for some.</span> But for many, they're not, thereby making them just as unlikely to work in the long term as doing a quick fix like a cabbage soup diet or The Master Cleanse.</span></span></p><p><span><span><span>You might argue and say that that's the point of dieting, to be lethargic and devoid of personality as you battle your way to eternal thinness, but - spoiler alert - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-the-real-reason-so-many-diets-dont-work-2015-8">it's not</a>. It's about making healthy, sustainable choices that you can keep up. And yes, there are healthy changes you can make in your diet that </span><em>will</em><span> make you lose weight.</span></span></span></p><p>And those small but realistic lifestyle changes are the same things people have been saying for eons: eat your vegetables, fruits, watch your sugar intake, and curb your alcohol temptations. </p><p>It's not nearly as chic as living like Gwyneth Paltrow for a week  nor does it come with the cool tote bag Sakara Life gives you, but most of us are not celebrities, anyway. </p><p><span>We are people - with jobs, with children, with spouses, with homes to maintain, with errands to run, with plumbing to repair, with relationships to tend to, with work to do, with books to read, with exercise classes to go to when we make time for ourselves.
