<ul class="summary-list"><li>Dr. Adeline Kikam is a dermatologist and founder of Brown Skin Derm.</li><li>She told Insider that many sunscreens don't cater to people with darker skin.</li></ul><p><keyword id="12098148" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sunscreen" source="Orion">Sunscreen</keyword> is one of the most effective ways to protect against skin damage, but many brands weren't created with darker skin tones in mind, Dr. Adeline Kikam, a Texas based dermatologist, told Insider. </p><p>Kikam, who is also the founder of the skin care platform <a href="https://www.instagram.com/brownskinderm/?hl=en">Brown Skin Derm</a>, said some sunscreens don't blend well with darker skin and leave behind a white cast, which may deter people from using it.</p><p>She told Insider that although skin with more melanin does offer some protection against the sun's UV rays, it's not totally protective and overexposure can lead to premature aging, <a href="https://www.healthline.com/health/hyperpigmentation#symptoms-and-risks">hyperpigmentation,</a> and skin cancer.</p><p>She recommended 6 tinted and non-tinted sunscreens that have SPF levels above 30 to protect people with dark skin from <keyword id="14500952" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sun-damage" source="Orion">sun damage</keyword> without the white residue. </p><h2>Sunscreens with broad spectrum protection, SPF 30, and water resistance are best </h2><p>Kikam said she looks for three few key factors when choosing a sunscreen. The first is broad spectrum protection, which protects against both UVA and UVB: the two main UV rays which can affect <a href="https://www.skincancer.org/risk-factors/uv-radiation/">skin cancer and aging.</a> She also said sunscreen should have a minimum of SPF 30, which is recommended by <a href="https://www.aad.org/media/stats-sunscreen">the American Academy of Dermatology. </a>Water resistance is also an important element of sunscreen, she said, so it doesn't sweat off your body or wash off in the pool or ocean.</p><p>As an added bonus, a sunscreen that includes antioxidants like vitamin C and E in their formula can boost protection by neutralizing free radical atoms <a href="https://www.today.com/style/what-are-free-radicals-how-do-they-affect-your-skin-t150296">that can damage skin cells,</a> Kikam said. </p><p>For people with darker skin, there are tinted and non-tinted sunscreens that are made to blend into skin without leaving behind a white cast. It's happening. It's doing the thing. It looks orange. This is looking like it's going in a bad direction.<br /><br /><strong>Nico Reyes:</strong> Today we're gonna be testing out this Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing BB-Gel. Now, this is a BB gel that will supposedly transform from a straight-up gray color into your skin tone, which sounds like some dark magic to me. To see if this color-changing BB gel is actually worth it, I'm gonna have my two friends Kyle, who has lighter skin, and Marisa, who has deeper skin, try it out with me to test how well it adapts to our very different skin tones. And, of course, I'll also do an eight-hour wear test with this product to see if the oil-free formula actually lasts on my very oily skin. I'm really hoping that this actually does anything to cover up, like, my dark circles, my discoloration, my acne. A little something would be good. I just can't see how, or why, or how. [laughs]<br /><br />Hmm. I don't see anything happening. Does my hand look more beautiful and unified? So, let's start applying to the actual face. I'm gonna do half my face first to see if I can tell a difference, and then do the rest. Oh! That is gray! And also way too much! I put on too much! I'll just use my hands. I can see a difference in my face. I can clearly see that this side of my face looks different than that side. What? It is the most minimal coverage you could get on planet Earth, probably, but it's, like, just enough to where I feel like it makes me look a little bit more... better. [laughs]<br /><br />All right, I have a clean <keyword id="29496" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Makeup">makeup</keyword> wipe right here, and I'm just gonna, like, wipe all this BB gel off my hands, but just so you can see, like, what's going on right now, like, there is pigment. There is color in this thing. I don't understand how, but it's happening. I think it might just be all one color, and they're advertising it as being adapting to more than one skin tone. I don't think that's true. But is that, like, is it bad that I like it? I like it. I think it's pretty good. Who knows what I'm gonna be thinking eight hours from now, so I'll see you guys at my check-in.<br /><br /><strong>Kyle:</strong> I don't struggle too much with hyperpigmentation or discoloration in that sense; however, I have super sensitive skin and I have eczema, so if it can tone down the redness and unify in that sense, that'll be a huge plus for me. What? Wait, it's so oily feeling. And, wait, [gasps] it's happening! It's happening! It's doing the thing! It looks orange. This is looking like it's going in a bad direction. My whole face is about to look like this. So I'm sorry ahead of time.<br /><br />[groaning] Oh, no. I don't know if it's just becoming clear. [laughs] I think, like, what they're getting away with here is it's such a sheer formula that it's just gonna turn clear, and then you're gonna be like, "Oh, it changed color." I can, unfortunately, see it happening. Oh, no. The more I rub it in, the more Donald Trump-like I become. I feel like this goes without saying, just, you know, based off of this whole situation, but if you have fair skin, I think you're gonna wanna steer very clear of this product. I'm skeptical if it's even a color-changing product in the way that it can adapt to different skin tones. I feel like it's just changing into this middle color on the bottle, which is, like, a very mid-tone, orange-ish tan, and it's trying to pass that off as being adaptive to your skin tone. I think we're all just turning into the same one orangey color.<br /><br /><strong>Marisa Palmer:</strong> So, if this is, like, the skin tone that's supposed to match my skin tone, it is just, like, the every-black-woman color, I feel, they just threw in there, because there's nuances to foundation. And this is just, like, I can already tell. Very orange. It's not gonna work. I'm a dark and lovely girl. This is not my shade. Mm-mm. [disappointed music] Come on! Like....[laughs] Let me try this on my face to see if it actually works or blends, because I'm very confused at this point. I'm very confused.<br /><br />It is turning a color, but whose color? Not mine! When I'm looking at the monitor, it looks like I put white lotion on my face, and then just didn't let it blend out. Like, I literally look ashy. I look very gray.<br /><br /><strong>Nico:</strong> It has officially been eight hours, and I feel like, at this point, I can barely tell that there's anything on my skin. The tint has pretty much entirely faded, at least I think it has. I'm sure there's gonna be some, like, leftover residue when I use a makeup wipe to take this all off, but, literally, it just looks like my skin. It's not great, because already this is, like, a very divisive product, and now it's just like, why even wear it? Because it just looks like I have nothing on my skin, so what's the point? I could just wear moisturizer.<br /><br />After chatting with Kyle and Marisa and wearing the Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing BB-Gel for eight hours, I feel like I can finally say that I think that this thing is not worth it. Out of the three of us, it really only worked on me, so I don't think it's adapting to different skin tones like it claims to, or, rather, unifies. There was very little unifying happening with this product. And at the end of the day, the color was pretty nonexistent and all of my acne scarring and my redness was kind of on full display, so I doubt that it lasted even more than a couple of hours on me. Maybe the eight-hour thing might just be referring to the moisturizing factor, and if that's the case, I don't really think it did a great job of that either. I feel like if you have my skin tone and want something so light to the point where it's almost nonexistent, you might really like this, but for me, I'm gonna say that it's not worth it.<br /><br /><strong>Marisa:</strong> Mmk, let me see what it looks like on my phone. <ul class="summary-list"><li>L'Oréal said Saturday that it "has decided to remove the words white/whitening, fair/fairness, light/lightening from all its <keyword id="6371970" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="skin">skin</keyword> evening products," according to the Associated Press.</li><li>L'Oréal Group owns <keyword id="6354629" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="beauty">beauty</keyword> brands including Garnier, Maybelline New York, La Roche Posay, SkinCeuticals, and L'Oréal Paris, among others.</li><li>The company's announcement to stop labeling products with "whitening," "fair," and "lightening" follows similar moves from other large cosmetics companies.</li><li>For example, Johnson &amp; Johnson recently stopped selling skin-lightening products that were available in Asia and the Middle East; and Nivea said it would change the name of its "Fair &amp; Lovely" line to be more inclusive.</li></ul><p>L'Oréal is the latest major beauty and personal care company to reconsider wording for products used or marketed as skin-lighteners.</p><p>In a statement released on Saturday, the company said that it "has decided to remove the words white/whitening, fair/fairness, light/lightening from all its skin evening products," according to the <a href="https://apnews.com/a4bd8559a742184924010635267196c7">Associated Press</a>.</p><p>France-based L'Oréal Group owns beauty brands sold worldwide, including <a href="https://www.loreal.com/en/consumer-products-division/">Garnier</a>, Maybelline New York, <a href="https://www.loreal.com/en/active-cosmetics-division/">La Roche Posay</a>, SkinCeuticals, and L'Oréal Paris, among other lines of products sold to everyday consumers and beauty professionals alike.</p><p>L'Oréal's statement did not immediately specify products in particular that it plans to rename.</p><p><div type="image" title="L'Oréal skin care whitening" height="1150" width="2488" msid="76678059" hostid="261"></div></p><h2>Other global companies have made similar changes to their products and messaging in recent weeks</h2><p>Brand and creative leaders of all industries, from skincare to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aunt-jemima-is-changing-its-name-mascot-over-racial-stereotype-2020-6">food</a> to <a href="https://www.insider.com/scrubs-blackface-episodes-removed-hulu-2020-6">entertainment</a>, are facing a modern reckoning that has sparked reconsiderations of deeply rooted racist origins of logos and messaging.</p><p>The announcement from L'Oréal follows moves made by other personal care corporations to give thought as to how products with skin-evening or lightening abilities are marketed, and whether or not they should be sold at all.</p><p>For example, <a href="https://www.insider.com/skin-lightening-products-discontinued-neutrogena-clean-and-clear-2020-6">Johnson &amp; Johnson announced earlier in June that it discontinued two lines products that could be used for skin-lightening purposes</a>: Neutrogena Fine Fairness, sold in Asia and the Middle East; and Clean &amp; Clear's Clear Fairness, sold in India.</p><p>"Conversations over the past few weeks highlighted that some product names or claims on our dark spot reducer products represent fairness or white as better than your own unique skin tone," Johnson &amp; Johnson said in a statement. "This was never our intention – healthy skin is beautiful skin."</p><p>A Johnson &amp; Johnson spokesperson previously told <a href="https://adage.com/article/cmo-strategy/johnson-johnson-scraps-neutrogena-fine-fairness-amid-growing-criticism-skin-lightening-products/2262721">AdAge</a> that the name of the Neutrogena Fine Fairness products "may be perceived in an unintended way."</p><p><div type="image" title="Clean &amp; Clear, Neutrogena skin lightening products discontinued" height="1500" width="2000" msid="76678060" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Additionally, Unilever — which owns Dove, Suave, St. Ives, and Vaseline, among hundreds of other household-name brands — said in a statement on Thursday that <a href="https://www.unilever.com/news/press-releases/2020/unilever-evolves-skin-care-portfolio-to-embrace-a-more-inclusive-vision-of-beauty.html">it will remove words that denote skin-lightening from its products</a>.</p><p>"The evolution to a more inclusive vision of beauty that celebrates and cares for all skin tones, and no longer uses the words 'white/whitening', 'light/lightening or 'fair/fairness', will be a policy for all Unilever's Beauty &amp; Personal Care brands," Unilever's announcement read.</p><p>"We're committed to a skincare portfolio that's inclusive of all skin tones, celebrating the diversity of beauty," <a href="https://twitter.com/Unilever/status/1276060992875757568">Unilever said in a tweet</a>.</p><p><a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/business-53178088">Unilever also said it would rename its Fair &amp; Lovely skin cream,</a> which is sold across Asia.</p><p>Sunny Jain, Unilever's President Beauty &amp; Personal Care, said in the statement that the company plans to make changes to how the Fair &amp; Lovely product is advertised.</p><p>"We will also continue to evolve our advertising, to feature women of different skin tones, representative of the variety of beauty across India and other countries," Jain said. L'Oréal is the latest beauty company to remove words like 'fair,' 'light,' and 'whitening' from marketing skin-tone products

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The EEOC has sued a Hooters in North Carolina, accusing the restaurant of racial discrimination.</li><li>Managers joked about the appearance of staff who were Black or had dark skin tones, the suit alleged.</li></ul><p>A US government body has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.eeoc.gov/newsroom/eeoc-sues-hooters-america-race-and-color-discrimination">sued a Hooters restaurant</a> in North Carolina for racial discrimination, accusing it of treating women with darker skin tones unfairly and laying almost all of them off during the pandemic.</p><p>The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleges in a civil-action lawsuit filed Thursday that, prior to the layoffs, managers at the restaurant in Greensboro made "discriminatory comments" about workers who were Black or had dark skin tones. </p><p>These comments included "expressions of preference for white and light skin-toned servers, suggestions that light skin-toned servers were more presentable, and jokes about the appearance and hairstyles of Black and dark skin-toned servers," the lawsuit alleged.</p><p>Managers also gave preferential treatment to workers who were white or had light skin tones, including being friendlier to them and giving them more lucrative shifts, the EEOC alleges in the lawsuit.</p><p>When the pandemic hit in March 2020, the restaurant laid off its roughly 43 Hooters Girls, the lawsuit said. The workers were told that the layoffs would only be temporary, it added.</p><p>The restaurant began recalling some of the Hooters Girls, and by about mid-May 2020, 13 of them had been asked to return to work, the lawsuit said.</p><p>Prior to lockdown, 51% of the Hooters Girls at the restaurant were Black or dark-skinned, but of the workers who were recalled, only 8% were, the lawsuit said.</p><p>The lawsuit alleged that the restaurant illegally chose not to rehire the workers on the basis of their race and color. It claimed that the violations were "willful and intentional and were committed with malice or with reckless indifference to the federally protected rights" of the workers.</p><p>The EEOC asked the court to order Hooters to implement equal employment opportunities and to pay damages and backpay to Hooters Girls who were Black or had darker skin tones and were not rehired because of their race or color. If necessary, Hooters should also reinstate these workers, the EEOC said. The lawsuit was filed in the US District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina.</p><p>Hooters did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, made outside of regular working hours.</p>

But the doll quickly took off on social media, becoming a cultural icon and arguably<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/17/style/qai-qai-serena-williams-alexis-ohanian.html"> America's most important doll</a>.</p><p>Now, Qai Qai dolls are available for purchase through Amazon, providing much-needed diversity in the baby doll market. </p><p>Williams announced the Qai Qai release on Instagram on October 15, saying that in the two years since the doll came into the public sphere, Williams and Ohanian have been asked thousands of times where people can purchase their own version of the doll. Over time, the couple realized that having a dark-skinned doll option is important to a lot of families. </p><p>"When we first opened @RealQaiQai's account on Instagram two years ago, it was just supposed to be an inside joke," Williams<a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CGXeLVlnOuX/"> wrote</a>. "But we've come to realize that Qai Qai could be the beginning of a new kind of toy story, and one that we're excited to help bring to life so our daughter and millions of other children can see and play with more toys that look like them."</p><p>The doll is<a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B088GGJC7K/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_x_Ry2HFbN84HKMC"> now available</a> on Amazon for $29.99.</p><p>Qai Qai (pronounced kway kway) isn't just a star, with 152,000 followers on<a href="https://www.instagram.com/RealQaiQai/"> Instagram</a> and more than 25,000 followers on<a href="https://twitter.com/RealQaiQai"> Twitter</a>. She's also a solution to a real problem — the lack of dark-skinned baby dolls.</p><p>Debbie Garrett, the author of <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Black-Dolls-Comprehensive-Celebrating-Experiencing/dp/B01FGPHWGS">Black Dolls: A Comprehensive Guide to Celebrating, Collecting, and Experiencing the Passion</a>, told<a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2017/04/08/black-girls-have-playing-white-dolls/100137970/"> USA Today</a> that in a world when being white is promoted as the default, it's important that kids of color have dolls that look like them. </p><p>Samantha Knowles, director of the documentary film "<a href="https://vimeo.com/332658888">Why Do You Have Black Dolls?</a>," said that with manufacturers overwhelmingly making white baby dolls, families are left with few options for representation. </p><p>"Black girls have had to play with white dolls for a very long time because they had no other choice," she said. </p><p>That's starting to change. When the popular cartoon Doc McStuffins came out in 2012 featuring a Black girl as the main character, merchandise from the show became the<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/27/business/a-disney-doctor-speaks-of-identity-to-little-girls.html?module=Search&amp;mabReward=relbias:s,%257B%25221%2522:%2522RI:5%2522%257D&amp;_r=2&amp;referrer=mp;referrer="> best-selling toy line</a> based on a Black character. </p><p>Chris Nee, the creator of Doc McStuffins, recognized the importance in a 2014 interview.</p><p>"The kids who are of color see her as an African-American girl, and that's really big for them, and I think a lot of other kids don't see her color, and that's wonderful as well," he said. </p><p>Today, parents of color have more choices for finding dolls that reflect their families.<a href="https://healthyrootsdolls.com/"> Healthy Roots</a> dolls allow girls to learn how to care for their curly hair;<a href="https://www.ikuzidolls.com/"> Ikuzi dolls</a> come in a variety of skin-tones and hair colors; even<a href="https://www.americangirl.com/shop/ag/doll-features"> American Girl dolls</a> have recently added more skin tone options for their Truly Me dolls. </p><p>And then, of course, there's Qai Qai. </p><p>"As a pillar of inclusion and acceptance, Qai Qai stands for bossing up and chasing your dreams," <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Qai-82931-Doll/dp/B088GGJC7K">the doll's Amazon description says</a>. </p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Oli Scarff/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Unfortunately, you won't be able to customise emojis' hair quite this much.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Emoji might be about to get a whole lot more customisable.</p><p>The Unicode Consortium, the non-profit body that governs the wildly popular pictograms, is mulling a proposal to add the options to let users alter the hair colour and gender of their emoji.</p><p>Emojipedia, an online resource for all things emoji-related, has <a href="http://blog.emojipedia.org/custom-emoji-a-summary/">put together a good breakdown of the what the proposal will entail</a>.</p><p>Two key aspects relate to gender and hair colour.</p><p>You can already choose the skintone of many human-looking emoji - there's an option of five (relatively) realistic skintones, as well as a generic yellow.</p><p>In much the same way, the proposal will allow you to choose the colour of the emoji's hair - with options including ginger, sandy, brunette, very dark brown, silver, and bald. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6414006" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="fertility">Fertility</keyword> drugs are expensive, and America's fractured insurance industry doesn't always cover all the treatments people need to have kids.</li><li>There's a thriving trade of <keyword id="97742" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="IVF">IVF</keyword> drugs on Instagram, Reddit, and other corners of the internet.</li><li>But buyers risk running afoul of the law and getting expired or poorly stored drugs.</li><li>Many of the sellers are just people who have leftover medication from their own treatments and want to help others.</li></ul><p>In 2018, Ashley and her husband decided to pursue in vitro fertilization. While a battery of tests showed he had "Olympian sperm," Ashley's Fallopian tubes were blocked by scar tissue, preventing fertilized eggs from ever finding their way to her uterus.</p><p>With IVF, doctors told the couple they could combine Ashley's eggs with her husband's sperm in a lab and implant a healthy embryo directly into her womb, dramatically increasing their odds of conceiving.</p><p>Between 1978 and 2018, this process has created more than <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2018/07/03/health/worldwide-ivf-babies-born-study/index.html">8 million babies</a> worldwide. The global fertility industry, which includes IVF and other tools and treatments, is currently valued at almost <a href="https://apnews.com/press-release/business-wire/2bda241c68ab4fba900c9d482103bffc">$15 billion</a>.</p><p>But the use of reproductive technologies can come at an incredible cost to aspiring families. It took Ashley six rounds of IVF and roughly $75,000 to give birth to twins.</p><p>And it would have cost a lot more if not for a booming underground drug trade on Instagram.</p><h2>IVF drugs are expensive, so people try to find them on Instagram</h2><p>In the United States, the majority of Americans pay for fertility treatments out of pocket. Only <a href="https://resolve.org/what-are-my-options/insurance-coverage/infertility-coverage-state/">13 states</a> mandate IVF insurance coverage.</p><p>Even when patients are insured, essential IVF drugs, which can <a href="https://news.bloomberglaw.com/pharma-and-life-sciences/costs-coverage-issues-spur-black-market-for-fertility-meds">cost up to $5,000 per round</a>, are often excluded. Just as IVF patients overcome biological hurdles to parenthood, they need to clear the financial ones, too.</p><p>Since the <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/buyer-beware-fertility-drugs-online/">early days of the internet</a>, people with fertility troubles have turned to message boards, chat rooms, and websites like Craigslist to share essential medications with each other.</p><p>"This has been going on forever," <a href="https://resolve.org/about-us/barbara-collura/">Barbara Collura</a>, president and CEO of Resolve: The National Infertility Association, told Insider.</p><p>More recently, potential parents have populated social media platforms such as Instagram with hashtags like <a href="https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/ivfcandy/">#IVFCandy</a> and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/ivfcandysearch/">#IVFCandySearch</a>, which can connect hundreds of drug-seekers instantly.</p><div type="image" title="medical medication medicine pharmacy pharmaceutical drugs pills vitamins cox prescription FDA over the counter OTC" height="1666" width="2222" msid="79449650" hostid="261"></div><p>Typically, these Instagram swaps are less like a <a href="https://slate.com/culture/2013/11/dallas-buyers-club-true-story-fact-and-fiction-in-the-matthew-mcconaughey-movie-about-ron-woodroof.html">Dallas Buyers' Club</a> for the digital age and more like coupon clipping your way to conception. Searching for fertility drugs online allowed Ashley, who asked for Insider to use only her first name out of fear of legal repercussions, to source about 90% of her fertility drugs for free.</p><p>While some people may sell drugs of unknown origin, more often it's one IVF patient donating medications left over from their treatment cycle to another patient in need.</p><p>Even then, it's not without risk. While the most sought-after drugs are licensed for use in the United States — including Menopur and Gonal-F, which stimulate egg production, and Ganirelix and Lupron, which delay ovulation — sharing prescriptions of any kind is against the law.</p><div type="image" title="medical medication medicine pharmacy pharmaceutical drugs pills vitamins cox prescription FDA over the counter OTC" height="1668" width="2224" msid="79449652" hostid="261"></div><p>Products from "rogue online pharmacies or websites… may be counterfeit, contaminated, expired or otherwise unsafe," a spokesperson for the Food and Drug Administration, which regulates prescription drugs, told Insider. "The FDA may take enforcement actions against these entities, as appropriate."</p><p>These actions can <a href="https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/resources-you/types-fda-enforcement-actions">include</a> seizing products, court injunctions against further sales, and even criminal fines and prosecution. Though the FDA does not typically pursue individual patients, the risk remains.</p><p>"That's why they call it 'candy,'" says Malloreigh Cattell, 27, an Instagram-active IVF patient who has not personally traded drugs on the platform. "It kind of throws it off a little bit versus 'Drugs for Sale!'"</p><p>Healthcare providers argue that patients who source their own drugs may compromise their own fertility treatment. Medications from unconventional sources, whether it's a neighbor, Instagram follower, or overseas pharmacy, are more likely to have been improperly stored.</p><div type="image" title="medical medication medicine pharmacy pharmaceutical drugs pills vitamins cox prescription FDA over the counter OTC" height="1666" width="2223" msid="79449654" hostid="261"></div><p>That can lower their effectiveness, according to <a href="https://www.uchealth.com/physician/suruchi-thakore/">Suruchi S. Thakore</a>, an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. While Gonal-F injectable pens can last for three months when refrigerated, for example, the IVF medication Ovidrel <a href="https://www.winfertility.com/infertility-medications">should be kept</a> at room temperature for no more than 30 days. </p><p>FDA and other regulations are meant to ensure American pharmacies meet these storage standards. But drugs procured through other methods often evade such oversight. If an imported drug is held up by customs, Thakore says, the transport ice pack might melt, and overheated medication <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2012/07/10/156575072/why-you-should-keep-medicines-out-of-summer-heat">might not work as intended</a>. Even when drugs are changing hands between IVF patients, people are taking dozens of tiny chances — on whether the bottles were kept out of the sun, stored at a proper temperature, or shipped efficiently.</p><p>"We as physicians put a lot of trust in those medications working exactly as we expect them to," Thakore told Insider. "Even minor fluctuations can mess up their cycle."</p><p>But for IVF patients like Ashley, the risks involved in sending leftover drugs to Instagram connections seems manageable — and ultimately worth taking. </p><h2>Insurers don't have a consistent approach to covering fertility treatment</h2><p>Each cycle of IVF is broken down into several stages, the most important of which are egg retrievals and embryo transfers.</p><p>First, doctors remove eggs from the ovaries, so they can inseminate them in a lab. Later, doctors take a selection of those embryos and place them in the uterus.</p><p>If all goes well, the embryo will implant and grow into a healthy baby. But if it doesn't work, many people find themselves repeating one or both steps over and over, at a significant cost each time.</p><p>To prepare for the retrieval, patients often have to take several different medications to optimize their ovaries for egg production. Typically, the ovaries release just one egg a month, which can result in a pregnancy or a period. But most fertility doctors aim to retrieve 20 or more eggs in a single go.</p><div type="image" title="ivf egg fertilization" height="1660" width="2213" msid="79449655" hostid="261"></div><p>To accomplish this, they rely on follicle-stimulating hormones like Gonal-F, as well as hormone suppressors like Lupron, both of which can cost hundreds of dollars out of pocket. Some patients may also need to prime their bodies for an embryo transplant with more common (and less expensive) hormones like estrogen and progesterone.</p><p>When Jessica got thyroid cancer, her health insurance covered almost everything.</p><p>But when she decided she wanted to get pregnant — and would need the help of modern medicine to do it — she learned she would have to pay every penny.</p><p>"My insurance was actually really ridiculous," she told Insider. "They covered absolutely nothing around fertility. They wouldn't pay for bloodwork."</p><p>Jessica, who asked that Insider use only her first name so she could talk freely about sourcing medications, found support through other means. She got the majority of her IVF drugs through the <a href="https://www.livestrong.org/we-can-help/livestrong-fertility">Livestrong Fertility</a> program, which works with pharmaceutical companies to provide discounted fertility medications to cancer patients.</p><div type="image" title="medical medication medicine pharmacy pharmaceutical drugs pills vitamins cox prescription FDA over the counter OTC" height="1667" width="2222" msid="79449658" hostid="261"></div><p>When one of her prescriptions, a follicle-stimulating hormone called Menopur, wasn't covered by Livestrong, she diligently tracked Facebook and Instagram posts to find people giving away their excess vials. Over the course of a year, Jessica was able to pull together most of what she needed through donations.</p><p>Such obstacles are common among fertility patients in the United States. While some fertility clinics quietly accept leftover medications and distribute them to patients in need, and pharmaceutical companies like Merck offer discounts on medications for low-income patients, many patients fall through the gaps.</p><p>Insurance companies tend to position fertility treatments like IVF as elective procedures. Wider cultural factors, like taboos around talking openly about sex and reproduction, and the stigma around infertility, only amplify the challenges patients face in accessing care, Collura said.</p><p>IVF has also been politicized. Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett, for example, has previously <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fertility-doctors-oppose-barretts-nomination-fear-threats-to-ivf-2020-10">taken issue with standard IVF practices</a> such as discarding excess embryos. Health departments, insurers, governors, and individual employers are the ones who can demand coverage and enact change. But in these negotiations, political and financial incentives can take precedence over the needs of individual patients.</p><p>"Very progressive states are more willing to mandate coverage, and states that are more conservative aren't," Libby Baney, a partner at law firm Faegre Drinker and senior advisor to the Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies, told Insider.</p><div type="image" title="Amy Coney Barrett Supreme Court Justice" height="1666" width="2222" msid="79449660" hostid="261"></div><p>These obstacles can be especially damaging for queer people and people of color. Black women, for example, are almost twice as likely to struggle with infertility as white women, <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nhsr/nhsr067.pdf">according to a 2013 CDC report</a>, but it's still often seen as a <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2015/09/five-myths-about-women-of-color-infertility-and-ivf-debunked/432711/">white woman's problem</a>.</p><p>"I get a lot of messages from [Black] people who are not comfortable coming out about their story, but <a href="https://www.insider.com/egg-sperm-donor-diversity-lacking-race-2020-9">they're out there</a>," says Brittney Cain, a 31-year-old woman in Atlanta who conceived her son through IVF.</p><p>Many of the other Black people Cain met in the course of her infertility treatments used anonymous accounts. Often, she said, the only evidence of their race was dark skin-toned emojis.</p><p>In the last few years, patients and providers have recently begun to push back publicly on the harmful narratives surrounding IVF, Collura said. In 2017, for example, the American Medical Association officially <a href="https://wire.ama-assn.org/ama-news/ama-backs-global-health-experts-calling-infertility-disease">labeled infertility a disease</a>, in part to prod "insurance coverage and payment."</p><p>Chrissy Teigen has <a href="https://www.today.com/parents/chrissy-teigen-opens-about-fertility-struggles-emotionally-it-could-be-t78566">opened up</a> about her own struggles with infertility, and her use of IVF to conceive her children with singer John Legend. Many IVF Instagrammers are bringing sustained attention to these sensitive topics. But more funding, advocacy, and visibility are desperately needed, Collura said. </p><h2>Sourcing drugs on social media shows no signs of slowing</h2><p>Like so much of the IVF community's digital community, drug sourcing efforts are a good-faith operation motivated by a common struggle: infertility.</p><p>Patients know firsthand that their leftover hormones, which would otherwise go to waste, could be the thing that helps another person start their family. </p><p>People connect to address these issues on virtually every social platform. GoFundMe and Kickstarter campaigns are a common way to finance infertility treatment. Members of the <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/IVF/">Reddit </a>r/IVF and <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/infertility/">r/infertility</a> subgroups regularly post about their drug "donations." And bloggers <a href="https://journeytobabyd.wordpress.com/2017/10/24/ivf-candy/">share their advice</a> on everything from choosing a clinic to sourcing medication.</p><div type="image" title="medical medication medicine pharmacy pharmaceutical drugs pills vitamins cox prescription FDA over the counter OTC" height="1666" width="2222" msid="79449661" hostid="261"></div><p>Instagram has made the search easier — and more aesthetically pleasing — than ever.</p><p>When Heather Li, who conceived her son through IVF, recently polled <a href="https://www.instagram.com/makingbabyli/">her Instagram followers</a> about where they sourced their fertility drugs, 15% of the 250 respondents said they had looked for medications on the platform.</p><p>Since she had her twins, Ashley is no longer on the medication market. But she sees herself as something of a "Santa" in the IVF Instagram community, connecting people with leftover medications to those in need.</p><p>Since her first IVF Instagram posts in 2018, Ashley has learned a lot about the platform: "It really moved from a post thing to a story thing," she said. "And it moved from blatant and upfront about what you want to hide it a little bit."</p><p>The dynamic is still evolving. Now, she says, "people are starting to catch on to that hashtag, too." But until affordable infertility treatment is widely available, the candy search will continue. </p>
