"And she says her funny thing every once in a while, and she likes to have one-on-one deep conversations. They've teamed up with pirates to hijack Darcy and Tom's (Josh Duhamel) wedding. Sean is Darcy's ex-boyfriend and knows that her father Robert is rich. So, they kidnap wedding guests in an attempt to blackmail Robert for money. </p><p>Carden is one of America's funniest women in her own right, but we rarely get to see her <a href="https://www.insider.com/greatest-movie-villains-all-time-ranked-2020-10">flex her evil muscle</a>. </p><p>On "The Good Place" her character Janet's default setting was nice. "The writers on this show are freaking brilliant, and we are very lucky."</p><p>We spoke with the two actors about the props they were able to take home from set, upcoming guest stars, and their favorite little Easter eggs worked into the show's elaborate set designs. </p><div type="image" title="Darcy Carden Manny Jacinto Jason Janet The Good Place season four Colleen Hayes NBC 2" height="746" width="995" msid="78375677" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Kim Renfro:</strong> Congratulations on the final season of "The Good Place," though it seems bittersweet to be coming up on the end of the show. Did you get to keep any mementos from the set?</p><p><strong>D'Arcy Carden: </strong>We got a few. Did you take something home, Manny?</p><p><strong>Manny Jacinto:</strong> Yeah, there are some things that have gone missing from the set of "The Good Place" [laughing]. I don't want to spoil anything, but we had a scene that is game-centric with shirts —</p><p><strong>Carden: </strong>Oh did you get one of those? I didn't get one. I need one of those. </p><p><strong>Jacinto:</strong> Yeah they're awesome. </p><div type="image" title="The Good Place season four Colleen Hayes NBC 3" height="840" width="1120" msid="78375678" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Carden:</strong> This is a big one, but I took the reboot button that they press every time Janet gets murdered. OK. Huh … right away I was like, "roller coaster." I don't know if that's right though.</p><p><strong>Jacinto:</strong> I think for me, the two words would be "happy tears."</p><p><strong>Carden:</strong> Yes! </p><p><strong>Jacinto:</strong> That juxtaposition of feeling one way, and then the other. </p><p><strong>Carden: </strong>Yes. There's a great Kacey Musgraves song where she sings "happy and sad at the same time," which is how we felt for the whole season. We were so happy, but there was just this through-line of sadness knowing we were coming to an end. </p><p>Both for us as actors on set, but then also as characters in the season, and you'll see that especially in the second half of this season. So that was more than two words, but you know what, Kacey Musgraves — those are my two words.</p><p><strong>Renfro:</strong> In the build-up to this season we heard there were going to be some powerhouse cameos — are there ones coming up you can tell us about?</p><p><strong>Jacinto:</strong> I don't know if cameos is the right word, because for a cameo you come in and do your thing for a little bit. But the people who come in [this season], they don't just come in and sprinkle a little something — they come in and they hit <em>hard. </em>And they make an impact. </p><p><strong>Carden: </strong>They're major ... guest stars? What word is best?</p><p><strong>Jacinto: </strong>Yeah, guest stars. I just want to reiterate the fact that they come in and they rock our world. </p><p><strong>Carden: </strong>They hit hard. We're very excited. </p><div type="image" title="Bad Janet Good Janet The Good Place season four Colleen Hayes NBC " height="900" width="1200" msid="78375680" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Renfro:</strong> This one is just for D'arcy, but which is the most challenging version of Janet to play?</p><p><strong>Carden:</strong> In a positive way, it might be Bad Janet. I love playing Bad Janet but she <em>nasty</em>, you know what I mean? We don't do a ton of improv on the show, but occasionally with Bad Janet the direction is just, "Be meaner, throw in some more mean. Just be mean." And it's often with Ted [Danson].</p><p>There was an episode a couple of weeks ago with a lot of Bad Janet and Michael, and I'm so mean to him for so long, and it was such a weird day on set. I had to be like, "Ted I love you, we are friends, I'm not really mad at you, we are acting," and he's like, "Thank you, yes, I need that." She's just … she nasty. Not nice. </p><div type="image" title="The Good Place season four Colleen Hayes NBC 5" height="751" width="1001" msid="78375681" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Renfro: </strong>The show is packed with details and references to early episodes and little background jokes on the set — what is your favorite Easter egg or detail from the show?</p><p><strong>Jacinto: </strong>The one that came to mind was on Twitter — it was a caption of us in the classroom with Chidi teaching the history of philosophy. And you have to zoom in and pause because you can only see it for a second, but if you look on my notepad it said "the history of phil + sophie" rather than the "history of philosophy." And that's all thanks to our set decorators and writers and whatnot. So it's just the dumbest little [Jason] moment.</p><p><strong>Carden:</strong> And those types of things are sprinkled throughout [the whole show]. It's crazy that you can even remember one because there are so many. </p><p><strong>Jacinto:</strong> Yeah and then the fact that this fan caught it was so cool to me because it's not even something we were putting on blast. It was just a little, little Easter egg.</p><p><strong>Carden:</strong> That's one of my favorite things about the show, truly, is how the set decorators and props [department] and writers and all these creative people make it so if there is anything written anywhere on this show, it is a joke of some sort.</p><p>Some of it you see because it's the front of yogurt store, and some of it is a piece of paper that is really only for Kristen [Bell] or whatever, and they still write a full paragraph on the off-chance that it'll help the actor or that the camera catches it. </p><p>I don't want to give anything away, but there's a restaurant coming up, and I'm just thinking about how the menus (that I don't think even make it onto camera) list every single item as a joke. Get your pause and rewind button ready, because if there is ever an opportunity, they used it. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Warning: Spoilers ahead for the season four finale of "<keyword id="8375938" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="The-Good-Place">The Good Place</keyword>."</li><li><keyword id="5601" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="NBC">NBC</keyword>'s "The Good Place" came to an end this January, and series star D'Arcy Carden (who plays Janet) just earned her first-ever Emmy nomination. </li><li>Carden spoke with Insider about what she thinks Janet's life is like post-finale, the sweet gift costar Manny Jacinto surprised her with, and her next series (Amazon's "A League of Their Own").</li></ul><p>The bittersweet, heartfelt season four finale of <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/the-good-place">"The Good Place"</a> premiered early in 2020, serving as a closing chapter for the comedy series. One of the show's main stars, D'Arcy Carden, is now getting a second send-off for the series thanks to the Television Academy.</p><p>At the end of July, Carden <a href="https://www.insider.com/2020-emmy-nominees-winners-list-2020-7">received her first-ever Emmy nomination</a> for her performance as the all-knowing being named Janet. </p><p>"While I was filming the show, a lot of the emotion and the tears came from how I was going to miss these people," Carden told Insider in a recent interview. "This [was] such an amazing experience. I love these people. I love this job. I love this friendship. I love this family we've made. But then actually watching the finale, the tears were about the show [and] these characters and the storyline. I'm just a huge fan of the show."</p><p>Insider spoke with Carden about what she imagines Janet is up to now in the afterlife, the surprise gift Manny Jacinto (who played Jason) had made for her, and more. </p><h2>What's next for Janet in the afterlife now that all her best friends are gone</h2><div type="image" title="The Good Place NBC 6 Colleen Hayes " height="1333" width="1778" msid="77752504" hostid="261"></div><p>"The Good Place" left Janet as the last main character in the afterlife, with each of the humans sent off through the "last door" and Janet's demon-friend Michael (Ted Danson) now living on Earth as a human. </p><p>Showrunner Mike Schur wanted to make sure fans weren't too sad for Janet, so the finale included the explanation that Janet, in all her non-human, non-robot glory, experiences time in a special way that gives her the ability to relive moments with her friends as if they're happening right then. So she's never truly left feeling "alone," even as time goes on into infinity (tracked not in years, but in what's known as "Jeremy Bearemies" in the show).</p><p>"There's a part of me, D'Arcy, that could be sad," Carden said. "Like, 'Poor Janet, she's all alone. Now she has to make new friends or whatever.' But I do think that the reason Mike put that line in there is to [tell us] she's going to be OK forever. She got to spend Bearamies with the love of her life and her best friends. And she can live in those moments whenever she wants to. That does bring me peace when it comes to Janet."</p><p>Carden says there's another reason why she feels good about Janet's fate.</p><p>"The fact that Michael is on Earth is very hopeful to me," Carden said. "She still has something to be excited for, like he will come back at some point and they'll be together again. Her very best friend in all of the universe will come back."</p><div type="image" title="The Good Place season four Colleen Hayes NBC 5" height="751" width="1001" msid="77752506" hostid="261"></div><p>Carden knows that the finale was extraordinarily bittersweet for many fans, since she counts herself among them. Carden recalled having a "crying headache" after watching the final cut of the series finale for the first time.</p><p>"As with this whole show, it's beautiful and emotional and all that, but it's not <em>easy</em>," Carden said. "Not that it's even dark, but it's not perfectly, sparkly, sunshine and rainbows. It's real and it's sad and it's complex."</p><h2>Manny Jacinto surprised D'Arcy Carden with the 'J+J' necklace his character gives to Janet in 'The Good Place' series finale</h2><div type="image" title="The Good Place NBC 7 Colleen Hayes " height="1280" width="1707" msid="77752512" hostid="261"></div><p>On January 30, "The Good Place" came to an end with an extra-long finale episode which included a loving goodbye scene between Janet and Jason (Manny Jacinto). Jason surprised Janet with a purple heart necklace engraved with "J+J," a small token to remember him by after he'd walked through the door that would end his existence. </p><p>The finale episode went over it's usual allotted time slot with a 53-minute runtime. To fill the airtime left on NBC, Seth Meyers hosted the cast for a post-finale special. This meant the whole main cast flew to New York City for a special last hurrah.  </p><p>"The night before, we watched the finale together and then we went out to dinner afterwards and had some drinks," Carden said. "I think we closed the bar down — we were out pretty late. And at one point, we were all sitting together at a table, everybody was drinking and talking, and Manny tapped me on the shoulder and I leaned over and he was like, 'Hey, I have something for you, but I don't know how to give it to you.'"</p><div type="image" title="D'Arcy Carden on the Seth Meyers special from The Good Place NBC" height="1666" width="2222" msid="77752521" hostid="261"></div><p>Carden told Jacinto to just give to her then, but he warned her that she might cry. </p><p>"He took me over into the corner and it was truly the sweetest little move," Carden said. "I am going to cry thinking about it. He had it in a little jewelry box and opened it and that necklace was inside. I was so touched. It's so Manny of him. He's so thoughtful and sweet and such a good friend and scene partner and he's just a special person."</p><p>You could see the "J+J" necklace wrapped around Carden's wrist during the Seth Meyers special the following night, giving one last tribute to Janet and Jason on air. </p><h2>What's next for Carden now that 'The Good Place' is over</h2><div type="image" title="A league of Their Own no crying in Baseball" height="1200" width="1600" msid="77752528" hostid="261"></div><p>Days after Carden's Emmy nomination was announced, she received more great news. After filming the pilot this past February (just before COVID-19 shut down Hollywood productions), Amazon's <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/a-league-own-reboot-ordered-series-at-amazon-1306264">"A League of Their Own" reboot</a> was ordered to series.  </p><p>Carden will costar in the series, which was co-created by "Broad City's" Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham. The show will be a "reinterpretation" of the 1992 Penny Marshall film, <a href="https://twitter.com/abbijacobson/status/1291473015499177984">as Jacobson explained in a tweet.</a></p><p>"It's such a beloved movie, and one that I grew up with and I loved so much, but I'm really excited that we're opening the world up a little bit and digging deeper into these characters and all-new characters," Carden said. "It just goes a little further."</p><p>Carden says filming the pilot felt like "summer camp," with the cast all staying in a hotel together. Leading up to the actual filming, the women all started playing baseball together a few times a week. </p><p>"It was so fun — just a bunch of gals playing baseball together," Carden said. "It really felt like we were a team. In such a strange way I almost forget that we were going to make a <keyword id="6355065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TV">TV</keyword> show. I'm so, so excited for people to see it. It's very fun and very beautiful, and I'm thrilled and honored to be a part of it. While there, the cast – including Jennifer Coolidge – discussed "who's most likely to nail a stunt on the first take?"</p><p>"Me and Josh got pretty good at it," Lopez, 53, said.</p><p>"I don't know if I've nailed anything on the first take," Duhamel, 50, added. </p><p>"Really? I feel like we got pretty good, especially when we were handcuffed together and we had to do all that crazy stuff," Lopez said before recalling their stunt fail.</p><p>"Except for the one time I almost went over the cliff. It was a really cool group of people," Coolidge said. "Lenny Kravitz had a room that [you could see] out my balcony. It, like, zeroed in it somehow. The point of view was just on Lenny's balcony so I saw everything."</p><p>Coolidge continued: "He does have a guitar but he also has a ghetto blaster [boombox] with the best music because he has his compilation of music on his ghetto blaster. I was hoping he would give me one of those tapes... but he's so sexy. I'm gonna ask him tonight [for a tape]. He's here tonight. She is 95 years old.</p><p>Blair told the crowd at New York City's SVA Theatre that she'd known she liked women since high school. For many years, she "thought she was the only gay person in the world," according to Adweek's Mollie Cahillane.</p><p>Baseball — and later softball — helped Blair realize that she wasn't alone.</p><p>She was on stage to help promote the premiere of Amazon Prime's new "A League of Their Own" television series. During filming, Blair helped consult showrunners Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson — of "Broad City" fame — on the happenings within the league from a first-hand perspective.</p><p>On Monday, after watching the first episode of the show — which Graham and Jacobson hope centers around "queer representation, Black representation, and chosen family," <a href="https://twitter.com/MollieCahillane/status/1536474183013629955">per Cahillane</a> — Blair felt inspired to share her own truth.</p><p>The nonagenarian received a standing ovation from the crowd in Chelsea. And Jacobson — who stars in the series, in addition to creating and producing the show — cried along with co-star D'Arcy Carden.</p><p>The "A League of Their Own" TV series will be available to the public on Amazon Prime beginning August 12. "We didn't feel like we were really part of that conversation at all. It really felt out of left field."</p><p>The morning the nominations were announced, Harper was doing his usual morning workout at home ahead of a phone appointment he had scheduled with an "animal communicator, aka dog psychic." Then Harper got a call from his publicist, who told him the good news.</p><p>"He was just like, 'You got nominated!' and I was like 'I got what?!' and then I told my girlfriend, she was like, 'What?!' and then I called my mom and she was like, 'What?!' and then D'Arcy called me and she was like, 'What?!'" Harper said through laughter. "It was just a whole lot of screaming for about a solid half hour, and then we had to calm down and talk to our animal communicator. It was nuts."</p><p>Insider spoke with Harper about filming two pivotal scenes for "The Good Place" series finale, and his upcoming Amazon series "The Underground Railroad."</p><div type="image" title="The Good Place NBC 10" height="1028" width="1371" msid="77768293" hostid="261"></div><h2>The final scene William Jackson Harper filmed for 'The Good Place' took place in Paris: 'We were all about to burst into tears any moment' </h2><p>For the series finale of "The Good Place," a small group of the cast and crew went to Europe to film a few key scenes. Harper's character, Chidi, was gearing up to leave the afterlife, known as the Good Place. This meant he would walk through one final doorway and cease to exist. </p><p>But Chidi's girlfriend and soulmate, Eleanor (played by Kristen Bell), was struggling to accept Chidi's readiness to leave. So she whisked him away to Greece and Paris for one last hurrah among all of Chidi's favorite historical monuments. </p><p>The final scene Harper and Bell filmed together, along with D'Arcy Carden, took place on a bridge in Paris. </p><div type="image" title="Chidi William Jackson Harper The Good Place finale Paris scene NBC 2" height="1271" width="1694" msid="77768295" hostid="261"></div><p>"It was tough," Harper said. "I remember all of us being like, 'Aw, man, I don't like this. I don't like this. This is it!' There was a lot of very loud, comical bemoaning, trying to make light of the fact that we were all about to burst into tears at any moment."</p><p>Harper says he filmed the bridge scene several times and remembers being very present with his costar, Kristen Bell. </p><p>"I had to check myself for a second," Harper said. "I was like, 'I'm standing on a bridge, in Paris, with Kristen Bell, acting. Who the <em>hell</em> gets to do this?' I just couldn't wrap my mind around it. I thought, 'This is a moment you need to hold onto. But, out of the corner of his eye, Harper saw showrunner Mike Schur walking up the bridge. </p><p>"I realized that we got the scene," Harper said. "But I didn't want to stop because that would mean that it's real, you know? I knew he was walking to come and say, 'Guys, we finished the show. You got the scene, it's over.' But I just didn't want to stop like that. I didn't want to end."</p><p>Harper knew the cameras had stopped rolling, and he and Bell were now continuing the scene despite knowing the footage wouldn't make it into the final episode. But it didn't matter.</p><p>"The fact that I would rather do a scene for the sake of doing a scene, even though we know that we're not rolling, that's the vibe that we had on set," Harper said. "That was the bond we forged over the four years of doing this show. We just liked working together."</p><h2>The most emotional moment in the series finale comes when Chidi has to say goodbye to Eleanor </h2><div type="image" title="Eleanor and Chidi close up NBC The Good Place finale" height="1283" width="1711" msid="77768300" hostid="261"></div><p>After Eleanor decided she was ready to let Chidi go, the two shared one final, intimate moment together in the Good Place. Chidi, a professor of moral philosophy, was able to give Eleanor comfort by the way of Eastern philosophy. </p><p>"Picture a wave in the ocean," Chidi told Eleanor. "You can see it, measure it — its height, the way the sunlight refracts when it passes through. It's there and you can see it and you know what it is. It's a wave. And then it crashes on the shore, and it's gone. But the water is still there. The wave was just a different way for the water to be, for a little while. That's one conception of death for a Buddhist. The wave returns to the ocean  — where it came from, and where it's supposed to be."</p><p>"Not bad, Buddhists," Eleanor says.</p><p>"Not bad," Chidi replies. But the scene's narrative carried through to the fact that the cast and crew were indeed nearing the end of their time together.</p><p>"You let all of that in when you're doing a scene like that — when you're saying goodbye," Harper said. "It was like, 'Yeah, I'm actually legitimately saying goodbye to my friends.' They all live here in LA and I live in New York. I'm probably not going to see them for a while and that's really, really tough."</p><p>Chidi's speech about the wave also provided a bit of solace. </p><p>"But I'd like to think that it's also comforting, especially in the midst of everything that we're going through right now," Harper said. "For me, there's something helpful about reducing things that feel big and huge and all-consuming to something that's just a moment — a blip. There's something about that which is really helpful for me. It helps me not stay in a depressed place, where I find myself quite often, honestly."</p><h2>How Harper approached filming the final moment of Chidi's existence</h2><div type="image" title="The Good Place NBC 8 Colleen Hayes " height="1333" width="1777" msid="77768309" hostid="261"></div><p>The last time we see Harper in "The Good Place" finale is when he finally walks through the final door — a simple wooden archway in the middle of a redwood forest grove. </p><p>On <a href="https://www.nbc.com/the-good-place/exclusives/tgp-podcast">"The Good Place: The Podcast,"</a> showrunner Mike Schur said he deliberately didn't give any of the actors instructions about how to walk through the archway. Just before Harper went through, he placed his hands in his pockets. Schur said it was an incredibly perfect moment, but he had no idea why Harper had chosen that small action.</p><p>"Honestly it just felt right," Harper said. "Putting his hands in his pockets is a comforting thing for Chidi. When he's very comfortable he's just standing in a neutral [position], with his hands in the pockets. Though production on the series has been paused due to COVID-19, Harper had already completed his portion of work on the show before shutdowns began. </p><p>"I'm excited for people to see it," Harper said. "That you will allow your kid to watch me but not stand up for me. So I'll do the work, I'll write you a conversation to have with your white child."</p><p>Byer then wrote out over 300 words on how to best explain to your kids what's going on.</p><p>"A good way to explain to kids #blacklivesmatter: You like this black lady, right? She's silly? She makes you tee hee hee? You would be sad if a police officer hurt her, right? Well, this is the current country we live in where someone you like can be hurt by the color of their skin and people in charge aren't doing a f---ing (you can replace that with dang if ya kids are soft) thing about it," Byer wrote.</p><p>"So they are protesting, and the looters... well, some of it is staged as a distraction and some are people who've been oppressed for so long it burst," Byer continued. "And nice cops? There are no nice cops because if a cop was nice they wouldn't watch and participate in violence against black and brown people."</p><p>"Instead they dress up like your GI Joe doll and are very mean," she wrote. "The curfews, the helicopters, the police in riot gear is all because black people have asked to not be killed... that's it. There's literally nothing else to it. Now once a week let's read about sh-- (stuff for the soft kids) that happens to black people that doesn't get covered in schools like Juneteenth, black Wall Street, how black people have influenced most of pop culture today and aren't credited or it's just co-[opted]."</p><p>Byer went on to suggest parents to post on social media how they are talking to their children about the protests as well as black history.</p><p>"There I did it," Byer said. "You can read it verbatim to your kids. Also I'm open to any additions. Netflix star Nicole Byer wrote a simple explanation of the Black Lives Matter protests for parents to read to kids

Not in the "the last few years have been a bummer" way, or the "a show I love is ending and I'm sad" way, but in the way that has led me to weekly therapy sessions and conversations with loved ones about their experiences on various antidepressants and other medication. </p><p>In the years leading up to this period of my life, I've watched a lot of <keyword id="6355065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TV">TV</keyword>. More than the average person, I would guess. Most of it was fantasy or drama, which I've always loved, with bleak settings and horrible truths laid bare.</p><p>But then I found shows I started referring to as "comfort TV." Shows like "The Great British Bake Off" or "Schitt's Creek," and, yes, "The Good Place." At first, I absorbed these shows piecemeal, watching a few episodes at a time with my eyes half on an iPhone game or the endless void of Twitter. </p><div type="image" title="the good place" height="630" width="840" msid="78375684" hostid="261"></div><p>By the end of the first season of "The Good Place," that mode of watching changed.</p><p>The series, created by Michael Schur ("The Office," "Parks and Recreation," "Brooklyn Nine-Nine"), started out simple enough. Eleanor Shellstrop (played by Kristen Bell) opens her eyes and is welcomed by a man named Michael (Ted Danson) into a bright office. She's informed that she has died, but thanks to her an incredibly selfless life on Earth, she's been granted eternity in an idyllic neighborhood called the Good Place. </p><p>The hiccup is that Eleanor is actually an incredibly mean and self-centered person, who knows she doesn't actually belong there. So she needs to try to blend in. She begins learning, with the help of her assigned soulmate Chidi, how to be a good person.</p><p>But by the season one finale, Eleanor uncovers a devastating twist. </p><div type="image" title="The Good Place Eleanor Michael Finale season one" height="1080" width="1440" msid="78375686" hostid="261"></div><p>Eleanor (and her new friends, Chidi, Jason, and Tahani) weren't in the Good Place at all. Michael is actually a demonic being from the Bad Place, and he'd been torturing them all along with a new psychological experiment.</p><p>All at once, "The Good Place" became a "phone down" series.</p><p>"The Good Place" was not only packed with <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-good-place-details-jokes-you-missed">references and background jokes you can't possibly catch if you're half-watching it</a>, but the second season shifted into compelling TV. It wasn't just clever and endearing and weird and fun, but also a deeper meditation on what it means to be a good person, and how and when that goodness can be rewarded. </p><p>"The Good Place" offered a lifeline to people like me who had started falling towards nihilism or were dealing with mental issues like depression (which has a clever way of convincing you to stop caring about much). </p><h2><strong>The few failings of 'The Good Place' were due to the high bar the show set for itself  </strong></h2><div type="image" title="Tahani Chidi Eleanor Jason season two The Good Place NBC" height="756" width="1008" msid="78375687" hostid="261"></div><p>"The Good Place" is not a perfect show.</p><p>After the seamless setup and twist of the first season, the writing team launched itself into new, thrilling heights with the season two, episode two installment, "Dance Dance Resolution." In one short arc, the show blew through literally hundreds of Good Place reboots.</p><p>While the whole first season was one long experiment with Eleanor and the other humans in their fake Good Place neighborhood, this single episode showed Michael wiping their memories and restarting the experiment 802 times.</p><p>Other series might have spent the entire second season with just one new version of Michael's test. But "The Good Place" threw that assumption out the window, ending this episode with our group of humans teaming up with their tormentor, the demon Michael. He realizes the experiment is a failure and needs their help covering up his mistakes.</p><p>This change-up was thrilling. It was like watching 10 episodes worth of material all in just over 20 minutes. It also might have set the bar too high, too soon. </p><div type="image" title="The Good Place season two NBC" height="1611" width="2149" msid="78375688" hostid="261"></div><p>Subsequent seasons were sometimes built around a few too many pivots. An all-mighty Judge (Maya Rudolph) was introduced. The humans were sent back to Earth, and then it turned into a cat and mouse game between the Bad Place demons and our imperfect heroes. </p><p>Along the way, Michael became friends with the humans, and Janet — the omniscient information database in the form of a human woman (D'Arcy Carden) — acquires more abilities than any other Janet ever created thanks to her many reboots. </p><p>The show started introducing problems and solutions one after the other, sometimes at the expense of character development. The Judge sets up rules for a new experiment testing the humans' ability to improve, but then all those rules get broken. A Bad Place demon infiltrates the humans' lives. Our protagonists realize the system is broken and set out to fix it. Hijinks ensue. Earth almost gets "canceled."</p><p>It's a lot for any show, but especially when it's filtered through only a few episodes.</p><div type="image" title="Eleanor Chidi The Good Place finale NBC" height="945" width="1260" msid="78375689" hostid="261"></div><p>These ups and downs and sideways turns were a lot. And a lot of it was fun. But the arcs weren't always as compelling as those early episodes.</p><p>I also never quite fell in step with the core romance of the series: Chidi and Eleanor. Like other critics, including Vulture's Angelica Jade Bastien (<a href="https://www.vulture.com/2020/01/the-good-place-eleanor-chidi-love-story.html">who outlined the weakness of their fictional romance here</a>), I would have preferred Eleanor and Chidi to simply be the best of unlikely friends. </p><h2><strong>Regardless of its imperfections, 'The Good Place' had an incredible and literally life-changing message of what it means to be here on Earth</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Chidi Chalkboard The Good Place finale NBC" height="840" width="1120" msid="78375690" hostid="261"></div><p>One thing about "The Good Place" will never cease to amaze me — that Michael Schur, after the success of "The Office" and "Parks and Recreation" and "Brooklyn 99," was given the opportunity to pitch virtually any show he wanted, and he chose <em>this.</em> A network comedy show carefully built up over a four-season arc which posits a simple truth: <strong>We owe it to each other, all of our fellow beings on this planet, to try our best to be good. </strong></p><p>"The Good Place" was a weekly reminder that there is goodness in all of us, even when it isn't readily available at the surface of our emotions. Even when we're hurting, and want to hurt back. Even when we feel nothing, and our minds have convinced us that to continue feeling nothing would be great, actually. </p><p>This show also managed to never feel preachy about its message. The writers couched all the potentially saccharine or sanctimonious dialogue in their believably earnest characters. The sweet came with plenty of bitter. Lofty philosophical ideals came with jokes about penis-flatteners and reminders that Eleanor Shellstrop is a "legit snack." </p><p>The message contained in the last two seasons of "The Good Place," in particular, was that humans inherently cannot be perfect during their time on Earth. It's all too messy. We are each bound to screw up one moral choice or the other, no matter how we try to lessen our carbon footprint or support local businesses or donate to a worthy cause or vote for the right candidate. </p><p>But we can <em>try. </em></p><div type="image" title="The Good Place" height="841" width="1122" msid="78375691" hostid="261"></div><p>Every one of us is capable of self-improvement. We make our lives better, and the lives of those we love better, by trying every day to be the best versions of ourselves there are. </p><p>We won't succeed every day. I don't. I doubt most people do. We're all selfish "benches" (the show was hilariously good at coming up with alternate "swear" words for its literally heaven-sent cast) or Arizona trash bags sometimes. </p><p>That's why the imperfections of "The Good Place" don't bother me all that much. It feels almost more natural that the show, which joked that "pobody's nerfect" on its first season, will have faults of its own. But I'm so very glad it tried, and believe the lasting effects of this message by showrunner Michael Schur will far outlast any gripes people may have.</p><h2><strong>The series finale was a perfect goodbye to an imperfect show</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Chidi Eleanor Paris dinner The Good Place finale NBC" height="840" width="1120" msid="78375692" hostid="261"></div><p>I sat down to write most of this before I had seen the series finale. In a way, I didn't need to know anything more than what was told to me by the time the extra-long final episode aired. Like the characters on the show, I knew what was next, and spent the week leading up to it trying to make my peace.</p><p>But that soul-bruising, starlight of a finale was everything I needed and more. The four humans, now living out hundreds of lifetimes (or Jeremy Bearimies, as "The Good Place" concept of time is called), one-by-one realized their time in existence was coming to an end. They leave on their terms, each passing through a gateway built in the middle of a redwood forest and dissolving into small beads of light and energy that filtered back into the universe. </p><p>Janet and Michael, our two non-human heroes, each get their own slice of new life. Michael is sent to Earth to finally live as a real, fallible person. Janet, the most intelligent and powerful nonhuman in existence, shows her most-human self yet when she tearfully says her goodbyes to Eleanor. Then our beloved heroine walks through the gate.</p><div type="image" title="Janet Tahani and Eleanor The Good Place finale NBC" height="840" width="1120" msid="78375695" hostid="261"></div><p>One of Eleanor's little beads of light travels back to Earth, and settles on the shoulder of a man who tosses some misdelivered mail into the trash (a classic former-dirtbag Eleanor move). But her little light seemingly inspires him to pull the envelope out of the trash and walk it over to the right building. </p><p>It's a letter for Michael. He's overjoyed. Unfolding the paper, we see a rewards card for Coyote Joe's Marketplace. </p><p>Michael, still giddy over the experiences of mundane humanity, earnestly thanks the stranger. Which is how, beyond all logic, I was left silently crying, tears streaming down my cheeks, as Michael uttered the ridiculous and moving final line of the series — "I'll say this to you, my friend, with all the love in my heart, and all the wisdom of the universe: Take it sleazy."</p><h2><strong style="background-color: #ffffff;">As a fan, I am left grappling with what I can take away from this wonderful show</strong></h2><p>Now I grieve for the loss of that little weekly light this show gave me. It's not that I can't, or won't, carry on without it. But it almost feels like my training wheels are off. Instead of pondering between episodes or seasons what new and inspiring moral twist lays ahead, I have the path clearly there: Wake up. Recognize how I'm feeling, be that depressed or optimistic or tired or fine or frustrated … and try anyways. Try to be good. </p><p>It's what I owe to myself, and, as Chidi Anagonye once said, "what we owe to each other."</p><p>Those words first came from American philosopher T. M. Scanlon. His ideas about moral contractualism were filtered through Michael Schur and his writing team and then spoken by actor William Jackson Harper as he played the character of Chidi. </p><div type="image" title="Eleanor What We Owe to Each Other The Good Place finale NBC" height="781" width="1041" msid="78375697" hostid="261"></div><p>On the series finale, Eleanor is the one who cites Scanlon as she tearfully accepts that she needs to let Chidi go. He was ready to end his existence before she was, and the many Jeremy Bearimies she'd spent with her philosophical studies had prepared her to do the right thing when it was most important. </p><p>And now, like Eleanor, I will carry those philosophical teachings with me, a little talisman to cling to on the dark days. "The Good Place" created an idea of the afterlife I want to believe is real, and it also showed me the very real way I can live here on Earth with more optimism and integrity. Even in the face of depression. Even when it feels like more than I'm capable of.</p><p>It's doubtful I'm alone in this. Millions of people, many of them who might not have realized they needed this life-raft of optimism in the form of a doofy NBC sitcom about an Arizona trash bag and her friends and a demon, now know more about moral philosophy and ethics than we probably ever would have in our life.</p><p>"The Good Place" was never about perfection. And we're all better for it. </p>

'The Good Place' wasn't a perfect show, but it changed my life anyways

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Grab a cup of coffee or a box of day-old Chinese take-out, because the Gilmore girls are back in town. And&#xa0;no one knows that better than the Gilmore Guys.<p>On November 25, Netflix will release four new episodes, each 90 minutes long, of the beloved comedy-drama that follows a young, witty mother and her intelligent daughter. The girls were best friends on television from 2000 to 2007, on the WB and CW networks. It sat alongside other teen favorites like "One Tree Hill," and eventually the spooky long-running "Supernatural" series.</p><p>But "Gilmore Girls" has persisted unlike any of its peers. It's a living, breathing, unstoppable organism.</p><p>These days, fans of the residents of&#xa0;cozy Stars Hollow have been following along, episode by episode, with the "<a href="http://www.gilmoreguysshow.com/">Gilmore Guys</a>" podcast. Two friends, Kevin T. Porter and Demi&#xa0;<span>Adejuyigbe, talk&#xa0;each week about a different "Gilmore Girls" episode, often with special guests. Occasionally, you'll even get to hear them talk with cast and crew of the show, including Scott Patterson, who plays Luke Danes, or Milo Ventimiglia, who plays Jess Mariano.</span></p><p><span><div>    </div></span></p><p><span>The premise:&#xa0;<span>Porter</span> grew up watching the series during its original run and totally loved it, but&#xa0;<span>Adejuyigbe</span> has never seen the episodes before. Their powers combined, they aim to entertain listeners with their sometimes wildly differing opinions on the show. In the beginning, Adejuyigbe didn't quite know what he was getting into.</span></p><p><span>"I figured I'd probably like the show," Adejuyigbe recently told Business Insider, "but I had no idea how strong this fan base was going to be."</span></p><p><span>The podcast, which is almost two years old, gets tons of fan interaction, since "Gilmore Girls" fans tend to still be deeply nostalgic for the show. Rory's love life is probably one of the most contentious issues that divides fans. In fact, each time the Guys bring on a guest, they make sure to ask them which side they're on: Team Dean, Team Jess, or Team Logan.</span></p><p><span>"That was the biggest thing that could've been treacherous," Adejuyigbe said. He didn't like Jess at all to start. And the fans let him have it. "People just needed to give me time to watch him over the next four seasons!"</span></p><p><span>In addition to navigating the potential pitfalls of angering fans,&#xa0;<span>Adejuyigbe and Porter</span>&#xa0;have been trying to avoid any spoilers, or details, from the upcoming revival episodes. </span></p><p><span>That Netflix revival, as it happens,&#xa0;was announced after the podcast became popular. Some listeners have even speculated that Netflix heard the siren call of hungry fans.</span></p><p><span>"I'm worried about the next two months. I don't want to see anything until I hit 'play' on November 25,"&#xa0;<span>Adejuyigbe</span>&#xa0;said. "We want to watch it the same way anyone else would."</span></p><p><span>He'll&#xa0;be busy over the next couple of months, anyways. Even though fans of the podcast constantly send the duo casting announcements or leaked set photos <a href="https://twitter.com/GilmoreGuysShow">over Twitter</a>, they're also taking their show on the road. Though they've recorded live episodes of the podcast before,&#xa0;"Gilmore Guys" is going on <a href="http://www.gilmoreguysshow.com/tour">a mini-tour of six cities</a> as they wrap up the last season of "Gilmore Girls."</span></p><p><span>"It's always really nice to have a live audience," Adejuyigbe said. "We know they already like us. We've won. Now we just need to not be mean."</span></p><p><span><div>    </div></span></p><p>He'll also be able to pass the time until late November by watching episodes of NBC's "The Good Place," a new sitcom starring Ted Danson and Kristen Bell that he writes for.</p><p>"I grew up on that block of [comedy] television during high school and college," Adejuyigbe said. "Watching 'Community,' '30 Rock,' 'The Office,' and 'Parks and Rec.' But then they all started going away, one by one. I'm really excited to see a show from [Michael] Schur come back to TV."</p><p>"<a href="http://www.nbc.com/the-good-place?nbc=1">The Good Place</a>," which premieres on September 19, feels like the NBC sitcoms of yesteryear. In it, Kristen Bell's character wakes up in "the good place" after she was hit by a huge truck; however,&#xa0;she quickly realizes Ted Danson's character has confused her&#xa0;with someone else who was a far better person than she was during her time on earth.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>This is Adejuyigbe's sitcom-writing debut (he previously worked on "@ Midnight," the Comedy Central game show). The most exciting part of the job for him so far was&#xa0;being on set for the episode he wrote.</p><p>"It felt nuts and surreal," he said. "I was just so excited, and I tried to stay out of the way."</p><p>He hasn't even seen all the episodes of the show yet, as people can be writing during the same time as production and shooting of a different episode.</p><p>"I can't wait for people to fall in love with William Jackson Harper, or Jameela Jamil, or D'arcy Carden. They're all incredibly funny. It's kind of a whole cast of Chris Pratts from 'Parks and Rec.'"</p><p>And being so critical of a well-known&#xa0;show like "Gilmore Girls" has affected Adejuyigbe's writing process a little bit.&#xa0;</p><p>"There are certain things, or tropes, that I realize I hate, so I make sure I never include that in what I write," he told us. "I have to be worried that when I write something, that same sort of criticism could come back at me tenfold.
