"I understand the reaction to it," Markowski told Insider."Ultimately, to be in play for select major fights, we realized we needed a pay-per-view platform and missing out on the rights to fights because we didn't have one," said Markowski. "So we built one."Put in even simpler terms: The rights to the biggest and best fights don't come cheap. We were tested during COVID, maintained a solid base of subscribers, and in the last 15 months we've been in growth mode again."On a size-of-subscription-base perspective, we're the healthiest place we've ever been. That allows our business, our board, to be confident in giving us more funds to invest in making more fights," he said."I hope that narrative will shift, but a big number of our subscribers are consuming high-quality content week-on-week, month-on-month."Outside of Canelo, the Taylor and Serrano world title fight represents one of the most significant women's boxing events in history."The ingredients in that fight are particularly interesting," Markowski told us. "First of all, and most importantly, it's a fantastic fight stylistically, and from an entertainment perspective."Secondly, it's a historic event that goes beyond the four walls of boxing. It's a moment in time for women's sport, and equality generally."Jake Paul's involvement is an additional spice in the mix. And Katie Taylor, a bit like Canelo Alvarez, is pursuing history, as is Amanda Serrano."As for Garcia, Markowski said the fighter wants to compete "regularly, having been out of the game for 15 months."The 23-year-old fights at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, on April 9, the same day Golovkin fights Muraya at the Saitama Super Arena in Japan, marking a double-header of events for DAZN.The result in Tokyo will also provide clarity for the second part of Alvarez's two-fight deal. A Golovkin win means the Kazakh will be hoping Canelo beats Bivol the following month, so they can collide again in September.But, in case there is one upset — or two — DAZN has contingency plans. But, en route, they stopped in Rome.Masvidal then posted a photograph on his social media channels saying they stopped so he could get pizza, which isn't something most people would think of doing if they needed to cut a lot of weight for an upcoming competition.Masvidal told <a href="https://twitter.com/espnmma/status/1280859007117221888" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sports Center</a> that the photograph was more of a stunt than a genuine meal."Let's clarify one thing," he said this week. "I have about eight guys on the team when we stop that I had to feed. So I took a bite out the pizza, because … when in Rome, right?"I had to take a bite of the pizza, I wish I could eat the whole damned thing but I didn't. I had a bite … it was amazing."<div type="image" title="Jorge Masvidal" height="1369" width="2000" msid="76899613" hostid="261"></div><a href="https://mmajunkie.usatoday.com/2020/07/ufc-251-jorge-masvidal-weight-cut-wont-be-hard-says-mike-dolce" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Reports suggested earlier in the week</a> that Masvidal weighed 192-pounds when he got the call to replace Burns.If true, he would have to lose 22-pounds in six days, in quarantine in a hotel room to abide the health and safety regulations in place for arrivals in the United Arab Emirates because of the ongoing health crisis worldwide caused by the coronavirus.Regardless, Masvidal did it.Even though he had to strip naked with a towel protecting his bare midsection, he weighed 170-pounds, just like Usman, who, to his credit, would also have had to endure a weight-cut while in quarantine.<h2>Cutting that much weight is 'really not that odd'</h2>Losing 22-pounds in less than a week is fairly regular behaviour when preparing to compete at a certain weight in all combat <keyword id="6356028" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="sports">sports</keyword>, not just mixed martial arts.Speaking to ESPN Radio on Friday, the former two-weight UFC champion and current UFC commentator Dan Cormier had more.He said: "It's not really that odd to have to lose that much weight. The difference is, usually you're preparing yourself for that big weight cut."Cormier competes in the heavyweight division today, and fights a trilogy bout against the UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic at UFC 252 on August 16 at the UFC-owned Apex facility in Las Vegas.But prior to his move to join the big boys of MMA, Cormier competed as a light heavyweight and said that, when he would make his way to the city he was due to fight in, a week or so before the event, he would usually be 20-pounds over the 205-pound limit.When many fighters cut weight, they're not cutting fat, they're manipulating their water and sodium levels.This means they're stepping onto the scales extremely dehydrated. And after the weigh-in ceremony is complete, they rehydrate and put the water weight back on."I don't anticipate it being that much of a problem because he's also going to have 30 hours to recover before he fights in the Octagon," Cormier said. Israel, Esq." If the actor had declined to be in it,&#xa0;Gilroy&#xa0;wouldn't have made the movie.</li><li>Gilroy also had an unconventional method of letting Washington be involved in every aspect of making the movie.</li></ul> There's always been an understanding on a Hollywood movie set: the director is king.But that thinking gets a little blurred when a superstar actor is in the mix. Whether it&#xa0;is Tom Cruise or Meryl Streep, the director often has their job only because the star "okay'd" it.If things go right, director and star work together, tolerate one another, and&#xa0;maybe&#xa0;even enjoy the experience enough to do it all over again on another movie. If things go wrong, a huge power struggle ensues and the studio heads pray every night the press doesn't catch on.Dan Gilroy has been around the business - first as a reporter for Variety, then as a screenwriter ("Reel Steel," "The Bourne Legacy," the scrapped <a href="http://superman.wikia.com/wiki/Superman_Lives" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Tim Burton Superman movie</a>) - long enough to be very aware of all this. But he's also aware of the trick to keep a project from being tainted by a power hungry star (or studio). And Gilroy pulled it off with "Roman J. Israel, Esq." (opening in theaters on Wednesday).The trick is this: You write the script without the studio's involvement, and you write it with only one actor in mind to do it with.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>The process began when Gilroy&#xa0;got&#xa0;an idea for a movie about a lawyer who, for most of his career, has been fighting the causes of the underdog. However, when his partner (and the face of the firm) is taken ill and may not recover, the lawyer has to come out of the shadows. And then what he faces makes him question what he's been fighting for his entire career.So Gilroy had an idea.But instead of pitching the idea to a studio - many of which had been knocking down Gilroy's door to work with him after his hit directorial debut "Nightcrawler" - Gilroy took a year and a half and wrote the entire script on spec. Then he presented the completed script to the only actor he wanted for the movie: Denzel Washington.Convinced only Washington could play the role,&#xa0;Gilroy&#xa0;promised himself that if Washington passed, he would throw the script in a drawer and move on.<h2>Giving&#xa0;Washington a setting where he could comfortably create</h2>"I've never written so specifically for an actor that if they passed on it I wouldn't have done it," Gilroy told Business Insider. "I always had a list of people I would have followed up with. This one I did not. I felt very strongly that the character is somebody who believes deeply in things, he's someone who believes there's something bigger than him, and Denzel is a guy who in real life believes in something bigger than himself. Him welding to that character was a quality I wouldn't be able to find in another actor. I felt very strongly about that."&#xa0;Gilroy jumped through the usual rings: Getting the script to Washington's reps, waiting patiently for a response, and shock when he got word several months later that Washington wanted to meet. In that meeting, Gilroy was even more shocked by the outcome."We sat down to have lunch and an hour into it he stuck out his hand and said, 'Let's do this movie together,'" Gilroy said.Now Gilroy had a finished script and one of the greatest living actors packaged for his movie. Sony won the auction to make and release the movie.A major reason for this entire journey to make the movie was because Gilroy wanted Washington to be a collaborator with him on "Roman J. Israel, Esq." And not just in the creation of the title character, but in every facet of production.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>The two broke down every part of the script and tweaked things to Washington's suggestions. When the two took a break so Washington could go direct and star in "Fences," Gilroy said Washington returned with an understanding about the character that had gone beyond his own. This included everything from the character's look on screen to things he would say in the middle of a take."There's a scene where he goes through a&#xa0;metal&#xa0;detector and before putting his iPod through it Denzel said the line, 'I lost the bass range on Gil-Scott Heron's 'Winter in America' last time I put this in there.' That was a line Denzel came up with on the spot," Gilroy said. "So the choice of song - that's a very heavy song - but also apropos to what the guy is doing. He would do stuff like that in many scenes. I'm not looking for him to give that to me. There's another scene when he's looking for a job and he starts to cry. That wasn't in the scene, but what he's playing becomes real to him."<h2>Washington&#xa0;checked his ego at the door</h2>But the collaboration didn't end when filming stopped. Gilroy wanted Washington in the edit room with him as well."I couldn't have really conceived before this of letting an actor come into the cutting room. Most actors are not objective," Gilroy said. "But I knew I wanted him to come in and look at the character and in the process we started asking each other, do we need this scene? Should we trim this? Egos really got checked at the door."Gilroy believes he was so comfortable in welcoming Washington into all the phases of the movie because he's been married to actress Rene Russo for 25 years. He&#xa0;said&#xa0;watching her prepare and craft parts for years has left him with a comfort with actors that many directors do not have.However, another reason was he was only going to make "Roman J. Isreal, Esq." with Washington, why wouldn't he utilize him to the fullest?"There are quite a few directors who would not welcome this process," Gilroy said. "They would want to tell the actor their vision. I feel for myself, as much as I trust my instincts, you lose a tremendous asset when you're working with a great actor and you're not listening and rethinking or realizing this can be approved upon. I wanted to create a space that Denzel felt comfortable creating in. "But we never thought that it could be a product in and of itself, until HQ Trivia came along."The show is nearly identical to its buzzy and famous competitor - where a host reads out a series of 12 multiple-choice questions, and anyone who answers all 12 correctly walks away with a chunk of the prize. But unlike HQ, it airs three times a day instead of two: at 3:30 p.m., 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. ET.Challenging the incumbent and its host Scott Rogowsky is no easy feat, which is why Live.me is relying on a bevy of celebrity and other influencers to help it take on HQ Trivia, apart from its trio of rotating hosts Brad Gage, Julia Price and Chris Vanger.The app, for instance roped in music icon <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/wyclef-jean-on-mentorship-and-how-you-can-spot-the-next-big-thing-2017-7">Wyclef Jean</a> recently to host a special Grammy's edition of QuizBiz, whereas <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/RomanAtwoodVlogs">YouTube prankster Roman Atwood</a> hosted a game on Feb. 10. It has popular tween YouTuber <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/RiceGum">RiceGum</a> slated for an appearance soon. Having recognizable names boosts viewership as well. While the app has about 50,000 people tune in per episode, a celebrity or influencer usually leads to an audience that is 5-6 times bigger. Atwood's episode, for example, raked in more than 300,000 viewers. "The overlap between celebrity influencers and social media personalities to our target audience is very high," said Annous. "Seeing an influencer host the QuizBiz trivia show lends to a fun and engaging experience for the celebrity's fans as well as daily QuizBiz players."While Live.me claims that it has amassed a user base of 40 million users since its launch in 2016, it wants to attract a bigger audience specifically to its QuizBiz shows. That is why it is raising the stakes in terms of the prize money. In January, thousands of winners split about $120,000 in prize money.In February, QuizBiz has upped the ante to a<a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/livemes-trivia-game-quizbiz-is-breaking-records-with-150000-in-prize-money-on-sunday-300592669.html"> $1 million prize pool</a>. The minimum giveaway per game this month is $10,000, with special games giving away $100,000 in cash. One of the three Super Bowl-themed games ended with a winner taking home $50,000, for example. While Live.me is indeed doubling down on QuizBiz, it is being careful not to place all its eggs in one basket. But the industry rallied by releasing no shortage of ambitious and exciting new projects, which brought their own set of breakthroughs in the world of special effects.From massive battle and fight sequences to some of the most realistic practical effects we've ever seen, here's a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the biggest films of the year. Three, two, one!To play the legendary warrior <keyword id="3026859" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mulan">Mulan</keyword> in Disney's live-action film, Liu Yifei spent three months training for up to seven hours a day. This demanding regimen paid off. The film's cinematographer, Mandy Walker, told insider that Yifei was able to execute about 90% of her own stunt work.In preparation for the film's acrobatic fight sequences, Yifei and her castmates were schooled in everything from weapons handling and archery to military marching and horseback riding. The performers did their most dramatic midair stunts while attached to wires or beams so that it looked like their characters were flying or spinning through the air.All in all, the film's action sequences required 90 horses, 80 trick riders, 4,000 prop weapons, 281 sets of armor for the Chinese army, and 730 pieces of armor for the Rouran army.How do you create a terrifying monster out of nothing? It turns out, with a lot of clever camera and stunt work. This scene from "<keyword id="920693" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="the-Invisible-Man">The Invisible Man</keyword>," where the titular villain throws Elisabeth Moss' character across the table, is actually a bunch of shots stitched together.First, the crew filmed Elisabeth as she was about to be thrown. Next, they swapped in the actor's stunt double and filmed her being thrown by another stunt performer in a green suit. Then they swapped in Elisabeth again. In postproduction, VFX artists combined the plates, then digitally erased the green-suit performer and the ropes used for the stunt.For it all to match up perfectly, the crew had to shoot the whole thing with a motion-controlled camera, which could be programmed to perform precise, repeatable camera movements.That wasn't the only bit of camera trickery in the film. On the last day of shooting, when filming this scene, the camera team had to get what they called "an impossible shot" -- one that involved passing a camera out of a moving car into another moving car, all in one smooth handoff."Extraction" marked the directorial debut of Sam Hargrave, the veteran stunt coordinator behind "Atomic Blonde" and a number of Marvel movies. Naturally, then, the Netflix thriller was full of daredevil stunt work -- just as much from the camera crew as from the actors and stunt performers.The centerpiece of the film was what the crew referred to as "the oner" -- an extended fight scene made to look like one continuous shot. Sam is familiar with big, long action sequences from working on the famous one-shot fight in "Atomic Blonde." But this one for "Extraction" required Sam to take us right into the middle of the action, even strapping himself to the hood of a chase vehicle. Just to get this one smooth shot taking us from outside to inside a car, he had to unstrap himself from that one car, run over to the other vehicle, and then repeat the same shot twice. This is what you call a stitch point, one of the invisible cuts that joined about 36 different segments into what looks like one long, seamless 12-minute take.For the third installment in the "Bill &amp; Ted" franchise, special effects legend Kevin Yagher created special bodysuits for scenes where Bill and Ted meet future versions of themselves.The process began with lifecasts of Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves' bodies, which were then used to sculpt the shape of the actors' suits, both the muscle suits they wear in the prison scene and Keanu's fat suit worn in a different scene. Kevin and his team sculpted and spray-painted tiny details like pores and veins onto the muscle suits and added bags of beads into Keanu's fat suit to get just the right jiggle in his belly.[beads shaking]The rollout of the "<keyword id="163980" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sonic">Sonic</keyword>" movie got off to a rough start when the first trailer was met with backlash from fans who objected to this Sonic's disturbingly realistic appearance. In response, the VFX artists gave the character an overhaul, making his eyes bigger, his mouth more animated, and his nose and limbs more cartoonish, more like the original design in the video games.Just about everyone liked the redesign better, including the man behind the hedgehog, actor and comedian Ben Schwartz. Ben not only lent his voice to Sonic, but also provided facial motion capture to inform the character's animation. On set, they used different stand-ins for Sonic to give costars like James Marsden something tangible to interact with, whether it was a blue stuffy or just a ball on a tripod.We saw CGI turn man into hedgehog. What about turning man into dog?In this year's remake of "The Call of the Wild," veteran motion-capture performer Terry Notary provided an incredible mo-cap performance for the movie's canine protagonist, Buck. Having Terry on set provided a raw-size reference for the other actors and gave costars someone to interact with emotionally.For Buck's design, the filmmakers used the reference of a real-life shelter dog, whose own name happens to be Buckley. To help guide the animation of the many dog and wolf characters in the film, the team brought in five other dogs for a mo-cap playtime session. But don't worry; no pups were involved in the filming of this scene, where Buck and John Thornton navigate a treacherous river.The filmmakers enlisted a stuntperson to shoot the real deal on a river in British Columbia. They then combined the on-location shots with blue-screen footage of Harrison Ford paddling on a canoe gimbal, filmed on a motion-controlled camera that allowed for some particularly cinematic, sweeping shots. Finally, VFX artists digitally added Harrison's canine friend into the mix in postproduction.The character in "Onward" that presented Pixar with the most challenges was this guy, known simply as Dad. He's introduced when Ian, voiced by Tom Holland, carries out a spell to conjure up his late father, but only half of his body appears.Pixar's animators spent a lot of time on Dad's first scene to make sure it would capture the force and unpredictability of magic. They even took turns blasting each other with a leaf blower to get a feel for what the conjuring effect should look like.From there, the challenge was giving life to a pair of pants, a task that forced Pixar to bring its cloth technology to a new level. The studio used a process called simulation to program how a character's clothing should respond to his or her movements and the different forces acting on them. But because Dad's upper half is all clothes and no body, simulation played an even bigger role than usual.To figure out how a person would move if he were missing his top half, Pixar's animators took turns putting on green suits with khakis and moving around in front of a green screen. Later, they digitally removed their top halves and used the footage as reference for what Dad's body language might look like."The Call of the Wild" wasn't the only film where CG animals figured prominently. The majority of scenes in "Dolittle" feature live-action humans and CG animals interacting in some way.The tricky part of that: making sure the humans were looking in the right places during filming. Nailing the eyelines was especially challenging with a character like Betsy the giraffe. To help guide the actors on set, the crew used stuffy props as stand-ins for the CG animals and got creative from there.Like with Betsy, for instance. They ended up sticking a giraffe head on a long pole, which got driven around on a motor cart. In another scene, Robert Downey Jr. needed to ride the ostrich Plimpton into Buckingham Palace. So they devised a gimballed riding rig that they could later replace with a CG creature, voiced by Kumail Nanjiani.The action-heavy "<keyword id="3367480" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Birds-Of-Prey">Birds of Prey</keyword>" involved a lot of physical preparation, with each actor's training program tailored to her particular character. Since Harley Quinn is a whimsical and unpredictable fighter, Margot Robbie's stunt work involved a lot of gymnastics.Black Canary's fighting style was supposed to be more grounded with a lot of legwork, so Jurnee Smollett-Bell's preparation combined tae kwon do and kickboxing. And Mary Elizabeth Winstead adopted judo, jujitsu, and karate to play Huntress, the deadly-accurate assassin who's all about precision.Early on in Netflix's "Project Power," there's an unforgettable scene where Machine Gun Kelly's character spontaneously bursts into flames. To figure out how to turn MGK into a human fireball, the effects team first set stuntpeople on fire in a series of camera tests.Then they came up with a breakthrough: an LED suit that would be embedded within layers of burn prosthetics. The LEDs were programmed to illuminate the actor as his character is seen exploding in flames. The gruesome prosthetics helped hide the LED strips, along with all the wires and battery packs.For MGK, this meant spending five hours in the makeup chair every day of shooting to get hundreds of prosthetic pieces glued on over 95% of his body. The process was so intensive that the rapper started just sleeping in his body prosthetics, and did so for five days straight, even wearing them for a night out on the town with costar Jamie Foxx.For Netflix's "Jingle Jangle," the biggest challenge was creating a fantastical world where magic and spontaneous musical numbers would feel right at home.To make Jeronicus fly in this scene, the crew attached Forest Whitaker to wire rigs, later removed in postproduction.Another particularly fun sequence, the kids' factory escape, was shot in front of a blue screen, with the two young actors rigged to the wooden chest. VFX artists later added in the tunnel and the giant fan and fireball.In this comic-book adaptation, Charlize Theron's character is supposed to have 6,000 years of martial arts experience, ranging from Greco-Roman wrestling to Filipino stick work. Charlize had to do intense combat training so she could look effortless handling both modern and ancient weapons.Of course, the star is no stranger to this kind of hardcore training, having done a lot of her own stunts for "Atomic Blonde" and "Mad Max." The "Old Guard" fight coordinator, Danny Hernandez, told Insider that Charlize and Kiki Layne spent four months training for the film's major fight sequence, where their characters engage in epic hand-to-hand combat inside a plane mid-flight.The payoff? The actors were able to pull off 90% of the fight themselves, without stunt doubles.How does this shot become this? Through the process of CG lighting, which was especially important to building the magical worlds of Netflix's animated film "Over the Moon."Creative lighting helped emphasize the dreamy light coming from the moon, which plays a central role in the story. In this shot, the lighting team is perfecting the big, bright moon reflections in Fei Fei's eyes. And in this shot, they're balancing the different light sources coming from the moon, the kitchen, and the colorful lanterns.These decisions about the intensity and placement of lights are laid out early on in color scripts, which are like artistic blueprints, expressing the mood of any given scene.For the scenes set on Lunaria, the artists wanted the light to be overpowering and the colors vibrant and bold to give an otherworldly aura to the moon kingdom and invoke a sense of awe in the audience.The horror movie slash political satire "The Hunt" follows a group of liberals hunting conservatives for sport, so there were lots of opportunities for practical gore <keyword id="37533" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Behind-the-scenes">behind the scenes</keyword>.But the most talked-about sequence was the climactic kitchen fight between Betty Gilpin and Hilary Swank. To make the head-to-head between these two characters feel as messy as possible, the crew designed a special set that was made to be destroyed.The set included foam floors, a chimney rigged with squibs, and a bunch of household-item breakaway props that were built to be broken, just like this glass window, which shatters in this scene. It was like a twisted jungle gym, meant to serve as the ideal backdrop for all the chaotic violence.So, did we miss anything? But while jump scares are a very common element to include in a scary movie, they don't always work as intended, and often, you might just end up laughing instead of screaming.</li><li>To find out what goes into creating an effective jump scare we spoke with Rebekah McKendry. a <keyword id="681" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="film">film</keyword> professor at USC who specializes in <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/horror">horror</a>.</li><li>What makes certain scenes in "<a href="https://www.insider.com/category/the-conjuring">The Conjuring</a>," "Insidious," and "The Exorcist 3" so terrifying while others like in "Friday the 13th Part VIII: <keyword id="147180" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="jason">Jason</keyword> Takes Manhattan" fall flat? </li></ul>Following is a full transcript of the <keyword id="21654" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="video">video</keyword>.Narrator: This is the reveal of the witch in 2013's "The Conjuring."Compare that to this reveal of Jason in "Jason Takes Manhattan."The first one is much scarier, but don't just take my word for it.Jason has certainly had his scary moments, but one of the main reasons "Jason Takes Manhattan" is ranked so low is because it doesn't follow the rules for making a movie scary.And while there's no exact formula, there are certain time-tested secrets you can include to create a truly terrifying jump scare, according to this woman...Rebekah McKendry: My students kind of jokingly know me as Dr. Horror. Narrator: Who has a PhD in horror.McKendry: So, jump scares are based on kind of a theory of what fear is. Fear is kind of the buildup.It's the time in between when you think something might happen to when it actually happened.Narrator: You can usually tell when a jump scare is about to happen.The lighting dims, the editing slows down, things might start moving by themselves, and the music gets, well, creepy.But those are the more obvious clues. So, what is the first thing that helps build to a jump scare? McKendry: I call it breadcrumbs. You get some type of indication that something scary may be likely to happen. The closet door opens slightly. We see a window open. There's a weird noise coming from the corner.Narrator: There are a few famous audio examples of this from classic horror. In the "Friday the 13th" series, you know something bad is about to happen when you hear Jason's...Jason: Ki ki ki ma ma ma ki ki...Narrator: Or when you hear the famous [suspenseful music] in "Jaws."But the breadcrumbs we're talking about are often more subtle, like in this scene from the 2002 film "Below." The character's reflection starts to lag in the mirror, so you begin to get that feeling that something is very wrong and that something even more scary is about to happen.Now let's take a look back at that wardrobe scene in "The Conjuring." There are several breadcrumbs that lead us to the final witch scare. We first have the sound of a closet door banging.[closet door bangs]Then the visual of the girl walking in her sleep.[closet door bangs]Andrea: Cindy?Narrator: Notice the camera hardly moves and the wardrobe never leaves the wide shot. And then we get the sound of even more banging. Only this time, the girl is back in her bed, so we know it's not her anymore.[closet door bangs][closet banging continues]Cue the creepy music.[suspenseful music]Each breadcrumb raises our level of anxiety a little bit more, like a balloon gradually getting more inflated until it finally pops. There are no specific breadcrumbs in the "Jason Takes Manhattan" scene. And, in fact, we don't even hear the classic "ki ki ki ma ma ma" until after we know Jason is already right behind them.Jason: Ki ki ki ki ki ki... Narrator: Once we see and hear these clues, that doesn't mean the scare is gonna come right away. In fact, for most great jump scares, the opposite is true. You have to make the viewer wait by dragging out the scene until the tension is too much to bear.Alfred Hitchcock famously said: "There is no terror in the bang. Only in the anticipation of it."McKendry: Once the gun is fired, the fear is done. It's over with. There's nothing left to be scared of. Once the gun is fired, the scene is over.Narrator: An effective jump scare can take time. Even the majority of the movie, in some cases. But if done right, the payoff will be well worth it.One great example of buildup is this nurse-station scene in "The Exorcist III." The camera doesn't move at all for about three minutes while nurses and security guards shuffle around. We know something is about to happen. We just don't know when, and it takes its time to get there. This scene in "Insidious" is another great example of building tension. Only instead of a single shot, we alternate back and forth between two characters for an extended period of time. The conversation goes on for about two minutes before the demon finally appears. And even though we know something is about to happen, when it does, we're caught off guard.The wardrobe scene in <keyword id="9152453" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="the-conjuring">"The Conjuring"</keyword> takes place over about two minutes after the first breadcrumb. Director James Wan lets the scene play out very slowly, with a creeping sense of dread.The scene in "Jason Takes Manhattan" is also long, about two minutes. But Jason is revealed so early on in the scene with no buildup about one minute after it starts. So the only thing we're waiting for is for the couple to see him 30 seconds later. For us as the audience, there's no tension, no anxiety.It's during this period of buildup when the best <keyword id="67897" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Horror-movies">horror movies</keyword> will use a distraction to further amp up the tension.Lars: Boo!Derek: Jesus Christ.Narrator: Think of this part like a magic trick. You're encouraged to look in one direction while the real threat is happening elsewhere.In this famous scene in "Jaws," we're distracted by the discovery of a tooth, and we're expecting to see a shark. Instead, we get a corpse.In "The Sixth Sense" when Cole and the audience is focusing on the closet, an arm shoots out from under the bed. One common and often overused form of misdirection is the mirror trope. Where the protagonist opens a medicine cabinet, for example. Alone at first, when it shuts, something is standing behind them. Surprise!The technique was first used in Roman Polanski's 1965 film "Repulsion" and can be found in numerous other films to this day.In "The Conjuring," both the camera and girl are focused on the closet. We think something is inside of it, ready to jump out. But in reality, the threat is actually on top of the wardrobe."Jason Takes Manhattan" doesn't even try to fool us at all. The main characters have a false sense of security.Sean: It's over.Narrator: But we as the viewer already know where the threat is the entire time. This brings us to another visual trick with jump scares. Making the audience feel more anxious by limiting what they can see. McKendry: Anything that you can do to limit the character, and through that, the audience's frame of vision, will always increase the anxiety and the scare of it.Narrator: There are two ways of accomplishing this, camera and lighting. Let's take a look at lighting first. Some common tricks are to use a camera flash, like this scene in "Mama," or a device like night-vision goggles in "The Descent" to narrow the character's and our scope of vision. Notice how much of the scene is obscured in these shots. We have very little space to feel safe.McKendry: All of these things have what we call in lighting a hard falloff, meaning there is a very sharp line between what you can see and what you can't see.Narrator: That being said, you can still have jump scares during the day. But these require a bigger buildup, as we mentioned earlier, for them to be effective.Just look at this terrifying moment in "Mulholland Drive." We don't see the creature outside the diner until after an entire three-minute-long buildup of conversation inside the diner."The Conjuring" limited how much we can see by having only one small lamp by the bed in an otherwise dark room far away from the wardrobe. Jason, on the other hand, is standing in a brightly lit Times Square, where the only time he's obscured is when two people pass in front of him. The other way to limit view is by using the camera.McKendry: It is very common in horror films to limit the character's kind of vision, their frame of reference, where they're looking through keyholes. They might be trapped in a closet and they're looking out slats of a closet. And really kind of limit how much they can see. And with that, you are limiting how much the audience can see as well.Narrator: Let's take a look at this scene in "The Shining." The camera is following Danny, so we as the audience can't see around the corners of the hall until he does, when it's too late.When Arbogast is walking up the steps in "Psycho," the camera is focused on him, so we are also blind to what's around him and what's about to happen. It creates an added sense of anxiety in the viewer.McKendry: The tighter you are and the more confined you are and the less information you have about the situation, that's when it's scary.Narrator: And camera movements can also force you into areas you wouldn't normally choose to go.McKendry: If the closet is slightly open, the camera may start pushing into the darkness slightly. The filmmaker is forcing you as the audience to get closer to it, whether you want to or not. Or, sometimes, the camera will hold perfectly still. And that in itself can be equally anxious, 'cause we're used to movement and cuts and things like that. Narrator: And when a scare finally appears, it's typically accompanied by a loud sound.This sound is known as a sting. A good example of a sting can actually be heard in the opening credits of "Insidious," a film that is full of effective jump scares. The crash accentuates the moment we are supposed to be scared. [screeching music]There's certainly a sting when the witch appears in "The Conjuring," accompanied by a camera push-in.[witch growling loudly]And there's actually two in "Jason Takes Manhattan."[air whooshing loudly]Jason: Ki ki ki ki...[screeching music]Narrator: But these are both ineffective, since we've already seen Jason. There's no peak moment of anxiety that is elevated by the sound.A sting can only work so well without a good buildup. There are numerous examples of this in horror films, where the jump scare and the loud sting come completely out of nowhere. Sure, you may be startled, but this fear won't last. "Deep Blue Sea" has a memorable jump scare with a sting, but there's no breadcrumb and no buildup. And so while the scene is certainly violent and unexpected, there's also no real fear after the shark eats him. And the absurdity of it all might just make you laugh instead. And after all of the work to build up the scare, the threat needs to hold up as well.In a lot of movies, the threat isn't real, but it can still make you jump.McKendry: Oh, my gosh, the closet door's opening, we're getting closer, closer, closer, the music's swelling, the camera's pushing in, and then it's a cat.Cats have had more jump scares in horror history than any monster ever had.Narrator: Like in "The Amityville Horror" when one just appears outside the window.One of the most famous fake scares -- it's actually not a cat -- was this bus in the 1942 film "Cat People." [bus whooshing loudly] In fact, this scene went on to inspire other filmmakers to mimic the fake scare and has become known as "the Lewton Bus technique," named after the film's producer, Val Lewton.Another famous example of this is the Pop-Tart scene in "Silent Hill." While it might make you jump, there's nothing terrifying about a Pop-Tart unless you have a gluten allergy.Horror movies are littered with these types of cheap scares, which ultimately hurt the movie as a whole because they haven't been earned and don't move the story forward. The best way to use a jump scare is to not overuse it.Too many jump scares takes away from the impact of them. And sometimes you don't even need them at all.In fact, best-picture winner "The Silence of the Lambs" doesn't even have one jump scare in the entire movie. And the classic "Texas Chain Saw Massacre" only has two.McKendry: If you're just up here the whole time, you go flat. There's nowhere else to go. And so it's all about kind of taking the audience on a roller-coaster ride of hills and loops, but not trying to keep them suspended in the air the entire time.Narrator: And when a jump scare does work well, you'll know, because you'll see it pop up again and again, replicated in newer films as a tribute to its original success and the work that went in to crafting it.
