CEO Mark Zuckerberg told a Congressional hearing in March 2021 the company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zuckerberg-nuances-content-moderation-ai-misinformation-hearing-2021-3?r=US&amp;IR=T">relies on AI to weed out over 95% of "hate speech content."</a> In February this year Zuckerberg said <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-metaverse-challenges-include-ai-development-to-human-level-2022-2?r=US&amp;IR=T">the company wants to get its AI to a "human level" of intelligence</a>.But according to Haugen and Motaung, this is a smokescreen that obscures the work done by thousands of human moderators, some of whom suffer severe mental health issues they say come as a result of their work.<h2>AI is just not as smart as Silicon Valley makes out</h2>Haugen said AI at the moment is nowhere near intelligent enough to interpret the nuances of human speech.She said using AI for moderation means there's always a tradeoff between having an overbearing algorithm that removes content that doesn't violate content policies, and having an algorithm that misses instances of such content."Those AIs can only be so precise," she said. "People who actually work on it call it machine learning, because it is not intelligent.""It is only learning inferences, statistical inferences from the data that is fed in."Her comments chime with an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-papers-whistleblower-former-employee-said-ai-wont-save-company-2021-10?r=US&amp;IR=T">ex-Facebook employee who said in an internal farewell note</a> in late 2020: "AI will not save us." Meta's focus on AI is in part driven by a desire to cut costs, Haugen claimed.<div type="image" title="From left to right, TIME journalist Billy Perrigo, Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen, Foxglove director Cori Crider, and ex-Facebook moderator Daniel Motaung, sit round a table on a stage." height="1080" width="1920" msid="92234888" hostid="261"></div>"Facebook is always trying to ... have more of the work, be done by computers, by AI, and less being done by people," Haugen said, saying this is because employing human moderators is more expensive than using automated systems.When Facebook's AI systems can't make a judgement call on a piece of content, it's up to human moderators to review it.Motaung, who worked as a contracted <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-content-moderator-kenya-mental-health-trauma-2022-3?r=US&amp;IR=T">Facebook moderator in Nairobi until he was fired in 2019</a>, said he doesn't believe AI systems can do the same job as a human."The element of what is moral, what is ethical, comes in — and artificial intelligence cannot do that," Motaung said.<h2>Human moderators pay the price with their mental health</h2>For moderators like Motaung the work can take a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-content-moderator-quit-with-blistering-letter-citing-trauma-2021-4?r=US&amp;IR=T">severe toll on their mental health</a>.Motaung said in his lawsuit against Meta that working as a moderator and viewing graphic, disturbing content all day resulted in him getting PTSD.Motaung said Tuesday the work left him "broken."During Tuesday's event both Motaung and Haugen said Meta could bring about changes to make work for its content moderators safer."Even saying: 'Hey, you are looking at things that traumatize you every day. "That's why I'm doing this. We are not animals. We are people — and we deserve to be treated as such."The lawsuit asks that Meta and Sama implement mental-health support for moderators and pay them the same wages as full-time Facebook employees.The Time report cited pay slips showing that Sama paid moderators the equivalent of about $2.20 an hour.Motaung's lawsuit also demands unspecified compensation for former and current content moderators in Kenya.A Meta spokesperson told Insider the company would not comment on ongoing legal claims."We take our responsibility to the people who review content for Meta seriously and require our partners to provide industry-leading pay, benefits and support," the spokesperson said."We also encourage content reviewers to raise issues when they become aware of them and regularly conduct independent audits to ensure our partners are meeting the high standards we expect of them," they added.Sama did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. In Time's February report it denied accusations of union busting and exploitation.

A former Facebook moderator in Kenya has accused Meta of human trafficking

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A third party contractor for Meta in east Africa is shutting down its content moderation arm.</li><li>Sama's Kenya office was responsible for reviewing some of Meta's most harmful content.</li></ul>Meta's key content moderation partner in East Africa, which is responsible for policing harmful content like child abuse and beheadings, is discontinuing its work for the tech giant. Sama — a third party contractor for Meta — is shutting down parts of its business including content moderation for the social media giant from March 2023, <a href="https://www.sama.com/blog/our-vision-is-computer-vision/">it announced on Tuesday</a>.It said it is letting go of around 3% of its staff — roughly 200 employees — at its Nairobi office and has had to make the decision because of the "current economic climate." The firm said it is offering support packages for employees affected and encouraging those eligible to apply for work at its other offices in Kenya and Uganda. Staff who have been let go will receive severance packages as well as wellbeing support for up to 12 months after their last day of working at the company. "We respect Sama's decision to exit the content review services it provides to social media platforms," a Meta spokesperson said in a statement to Insider. "We'll work with our partners during this transition to ensure there's no impact on our ability to review content."Meta first contracted Sama in 2017 for data labelling and training artificial intelligence, hiring some 1,500 employees,<a href="https://www.ft.com/content/6c2ddd5b-1593-45c0-95b5-b35f3711f288"> the Financial Times reported</a>. The company has faced allegations of poor treatment of employees, and in 2022 a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ex-facebook-moderator-accuses-meta-human-trafficking-kenya-2022-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">lawsuit was filed</a> by a fired content moderator against Meta and Sama alleging human trafficking, forced labor, and union busting. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-content-moderator-kenya-mental-health-trauma-2022-3?r=US&amp;IR=T">The former employee, Daniel Motaung</a>, said he and his colleagues at Sama were exposed to graphic content including child sexual abuse, animal torture, and beheadings and were paid a salary of $2.20 per-hour. Some of his peers developed PTSD as a result of the experience, the lawsuit alleged.Majorel — a Luxembourg-based firm — will be taking over content moderation for Meta in the region, sources with knowledge of the matter told the FT. Majorel has worked on content moderation for TikTok previously. Majorel has also faced allegations from employees of poor working conditions.
