A new US study involving an Indian-origin researcher has found that exposure to e-cigarette aerosols can cause heart arrhythmias in animal models -- both in the form of premature and skipped heartbeats. The study from <keyword id="236086" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="university-of-louisville" source="Orion">University of Louisville</keyword> researchers in the Christina Lee Brown Environment Institute, published in <keyword id="932868" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nature-communications" source="Orion">Nature Communications</keyword>, suggests exposure to specific chemicals within e-cigarette liquids (e-liquids) promotes arrhythmias and cardiac electrical dysfunction. "Our findings demonstrate that short-term exposure to e-cigarettes can destabilise heart rhythm through specific chemicals within e-liquids," said <keyword id="15354096" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="alex-carll" source="Orion">Alex Carll</keyword>, an assistant professor who led the study. These findings suggest that e-cigarette use involving certain flavours or solvent vehicles may disrupt the heart's electrical conduction and provoke arrhythmias. "These effects could increase the risk for atrial or ventricular fibrillation and sudden cardiac arrest," Carll added. Conducted in collaboration with <keyword id="15354094" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="daniel-conklin" source="Orion">Daniel Conklin</keyword> and <keyword id="15354095" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="aruni-bhatnagar" source="Orion">Aruni Bhatnagar</keyword>, professors in the division of environmental medicine at the university, this work adds to a growing body of research on the potential toxicity and health impacts of e-cigarettes reported by the American Heart Association Tobacco Regulation and Addiction Center. "The findings of this study are important because they provide fresh evidence that the use of e-cigarettes could interfere with normal heart rhythms -- something we did not know before," Bhatnagar said. "This is highly concerning given the rapid growth of e-cigarette use, particularly among young people." The researchers tested the cardiac impacts of inhaled e-cigarette aerosols solely from the main two ingredients in e-liquids (nicotine-free propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin) or from flavoured retail e-liquids containing nicotine. They found that for all e-cigarette aerosols, the animals' heart rate slowed during puff exposures and sped up afterwards as heart rate variability declined, indicating fight-or-flight stress responses. In addition, e-cigarette puffs from a menthol-flavoured e-liquid or from propylene glycol alone caused ventricular arrhythmias and other conduction irregularities in the heart. e-cigarettes can deliver aldehydes, particles and nicotine at levels comparable to combustible cigarettes. "Vaping might help smokers quit combustible cigarettes, but the appeal and addictiveness of e-cigarettes may encourage youth to vape amidst unknown long-term risks or take up smoking," said the researchers. A full 26% of the class was women, or 30 executives, the person said. Interestingly, that's the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-sachs-new-partner-class-list-2018-2018-11">same percentage</a> as the latest partner class at Goldman Sachs, one of JPMorgan's closest competitors. JPMorgan announced the promotions this morning on an internal web page. For JPMorgan, North America accounts for the largest share of the promotions, with 46% of the class based there, the person said. Another 31% is based in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, with 18% in Asia Pacific and 5% in Latin America. By business line, investment and corporate banking made up a plurality, with 36%. Another 20% work in trading, with 17% coming from sales and 13% from digital and platform services, the person said. Treasury and security services accounted for 8%, with 5% from research. "Achieving the MD distinction does not come easily, but is earned through dedication to clients and colleagues, hard work and a commitment to our shared culture," Daniel Pinto and the corporate and investment bank management team said in the message.
