Daman and Diu came into existence as a separate union territory following the Goa, Daman and Diu Reorganization Act of 1987. Till then it remained as part of Goa after 1961 when it was liberated from the Portuguese rule. During the first bye elections from here in 1987, the Congress Party won from here. With its single Lok Sabha constituency, the union territory of Daman and Diu elected BJP’s Lalubhai Babubhai Patel from this seat who had a margin of 9,222 votes than Ketan Dahyabhai Patel of the Congress party. Both of them had pushed AAP’s Kessur Goan behind whose result showed up only 729 votes. In 2009, Lalubhai had fought as a BJP candidate and won by a good margin of 24,838 votes. Vallabhai Patel of the Congress party had then secured 28.97 votes from Daman and Diu constituency. In the Lok Sabha elections 2019, the top candidates contesting are BJP’s Lalubhai Patel, Congress party’s Ketan Dahyabhai Patel, and BSP’s Sakil Latif Khan. The independent candidate who is quite popular in the region and now trying to wage a tough battle with these candidates is Patel Umeshbhai Babubhai. The political experts say the entry of Umesh Patel and Sakil Khan has now made the game tougher for the ruling party.

Lalubhai Patel becomes the 185th candidate announced by the BJP to represent the party in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He will contest from Daman and Diu once again in the face of BJP. This time, Ketan Patel will field on behalf of the Congress party. <ul><li>The Ministry of External Affairs every year organises internship opportunities of six months in two terms.</li><li>Due to COVID-19 pandemic, the online application for Term 2 has not opened yet, and the ministry will soon announce the dates.</li><li>The ministry will select 30 interns with a monthly stipend of ₹10,000 per month.</li></ul>The Ministry of External Affairs (<keyword id="6358274" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MEA" source="Orion">MEA</keyword>) every year organises an internship opportunity for budding scholars to familiarise themselves with the process of formulation of foreign policy and its implementation by the Government of India. The duration of the internship is six months offered in two terms -- Term 1 (January to June) and Term 2 (July to December). Due to COVID-19 pandemic, the online application for Term 2 has not opened yet, and the ministry will soon announce the dates. Interested candidates can keep a check on their <a href="https://www.internship.mea.gov.in/">official website</a>. The ministry will select 30 interns and they shall report to, work under close supervision of the concerned head of division (HOD). They may be required to conduct research, write reports, analyse evolving developments, or carry out any other task entrusted to them by the HOD. All the interns will get a monthly stipend of ₹10,000 per month. Candidates will have to report to the Delhi office during the course of their internship. The ministry will bear the travel cost for outstation candidates who will have to fly to Delhi from their home state. Eligibility criteria for the internship — 1. All the candidates should be an Indian citizen. 2. The maximum age limit for the candidates is 25 years as on December 31, of the year of the internship. 3. Candidates should have a minimum educational qualification of a graduate degree from a recognised university. 4. Candidates belonging to these states are only eligible for the opportunity — Term 1 — Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andaman &amp; Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Delhi. Term 2 — Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Lakshadweep, Puducherry. 5. 30%-50% seats are reserved for women candidates. Most of the 112 MLAs of the party in the 182-member Assembly were present at the meeting, BJP sources said. Patel won the 2017 Gujarat Legislative Assembly elections from Ghatlodia constituency, defeating Congress candidate Shashikant Patel by over one lakh votes, the highest winning margin in the 2017 Gujarat polls. He holds a diploma in civil engineering and is considered close to former CM Anandiben Patel, who won from the seat in 2012 polls. With Patel being named the new legislature party leader, the suspense over who will succeed Rupani as Gujarat chief minister has ended. The new leader will meet the governor and stake claim to form the government, sources said. BJP's central observers Narendra Singh Tomar and Prahlad Joshi and party general secretary Tarun Chaug were present at the legislature party meet. Tomar met state BJP chief C R Paatil on Sunday morning. Rupani (65) on Saturday resigned from the post, his sudden announcement coming over a year before the state goes to polls. It is not clear what prompted the development in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state where elections to the 182-member Assembly are due in December 2022. Rupani, the fourth chief minister to demit office in BJP-ruled states during the coronavirus pandemic, was sworn in as chief minister - his second stint as CM - in December 2017. Rupani, who completed five years in office on August 7 this year, first became the chief minister on August 7, 2016, following the resignation of incumbent Anandiben Patel, and continued in the office after the BJP's victory in the 2017 Assembly elections. As the second phase of the <keyword id="43573" type="EVENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="General-Election">general election</keyword> takes off in India, voters in 11 states and 1 union territory— West Bengal, Odisha, <keyword id="20154" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword>, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Manipur and Puducherry — were up early queuing up at the election booths. Nearly 5 million people are eligible to vote in the state of West Bengal with a nearly equal distribution between men and women, albeit there are only 87 registered third-gender voters in the three constituencies going to vote in the state today today. And Puducherry, while being a union territory, is home to nearly one million voters who have been facing <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/elections/lok-sabha/india/puducherry-congress-tries-to-win-back-sole-mp-seat/articleshow/68899027.cms">increasing</a> debt and a fall in social initiatives due to lower devolution of taxes from the central government. A lot of voters and politicians are wondering if the second phase of polling will be marred with problems of EVM malfunctions and poll booth violence like evidenced during the first phase of the general election in India. Two incidents of poll booth violence have already been reported in West Bengal. For Tamil Nadu, the days leading up to the election were a little chaotic after the Income Tax (IT) department seized over 1,350 kilograms of gold and nearly ₹14.8 million which was allegedly stashed to bribe voters. Elections in Vellore, one of Tamil Nadu’s most-watched constituencies, were cancelled altogether after ₹1.05 million was found at Durai Murugan’s house, the father of Kathir Anand — a DMK candidate in the district. Another ₹115.3 was also found at Poonjolai Srinivasan’s cement godown, a known associate of Murugan. While Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu struggle with voter bribery issues, Bihar and Karnataka are more concerned with voter turnout. As Manipur goes to polls again, the Returning Officer (RO)The Returning Officer (RO) of the Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency, Haobam Rosita, has <a href="https://www.newsclick.in/returning-officer-recommends-re-poll-19-polling-stations-manipur">recommended</a> that re-polling needs to take place at 19 of the polling stations from the first phase of the general elections in the state. Among the many reasons that Rosita cites for repolling, the most disturbing is probably one of the constituencies showed that voter turnout in excess of 100% and that the polling booth for the Najang Village was put up at a non-designated location. The third phase of the general election will kick off on April 23 covering 14 states — Assam, Goa, Karnataka, Odisha, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Bihar, Gujarat, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Daman and Diu, Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra and West Bengal. Here’s what the second phase of the Indian general election has in store for the 11 states polling today

India is surely living up in since the last couple of years. Increased <keyword id="6359858" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="alcohol">alcohol</keyword> consumption is the biggest indicator of this. No prizes for guessing the heaviest of drinkers. Among Indian states, the trend of bottom’s up is the highest in <keyword id="28504" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Kerala">Kerala</keyword> and Andhra Pradesh. 
 
Overall statistics is a bit alarming too. According to a survey that was compiled and presented recently, Indian population was studied between 2008 and 2012. The World Health Organization warned showing a startling 11% of the people starting from 15 years of age were among moderate to heavy drinkers. 
 
The per capita consumption of alcohol had increased from 1.6 liters in 2003-2005, to a good 2.2 liters between 2010 and 2012. Young Keralites and Andhrites kept their alcohol flag flying high with heavy alcohol consumption per annum, followed by other states such as Maharashtra and Punjab. 
 
While the global figure stood at 16% overall drinkers, India alone had achieved a percentage of 11% with its heavy and binge drinkers making up for the numbers. In 2010 alone, about 30% of total population celebrated getting high on spirits. About 93% alcohols were consumed in some form of the spirit or the other, and beer added up to a paltry 7% of the total consumption. 
 Taking these figures seriously, and paying good heed to the warning issued by <keyword id="6366244" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="WHO">WHO</keyword>, Kerala moved towards blanket banning of liquor only to water down the policy later. 
 According to India’s National Sample Survey Office which collates data and interprets them to understand the problem posed by high consumption of alcohol, there are probably more loopholes than what the naked eye can see. Because <keyword id="159764" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="nsso">NSSO</keyword> does not take into account the high-end spectrum drinking that happens in social circles, and private bars. 
 
NSSO also attempted bringing together the data from years 2011-2012 where liquor was split into four categories while collating the numbers. They were toddy, country liquor, beer, and foreign/ refined liquor or wine. The rural Indian, on an average consumes around 220 ml of alcohol in some form or the other, making for an annual quantity of 11.4 liters a year. 
 
Toddy is considered the most favourite among this category owing to the fact that it can be accessed easily, and comes in many price brackets that can be afforded by the poorest of the poor. Beer drinking states followed by the ones who preferred ‘phoren’ liquor came later. 
 
Daman and Diu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Puducherry were among the leading Union Territories in the category which preferred better form of liquor or beer over Toddy. Goa, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka too followed the suit. Karnataka and Kerala are almost vying with each other in this classification category. 
 
Though there are contradicting reports as to which state tops the list, WHO seems to go by its own set of data making Kerala the state which loves its drink or two. But, NSSO seems to give away this most coveted place to Andhra Pradesh making this the biggest consumer of alcohol. During the pre-Telangana period, Andhra seems to have taken to drinking with much passion, downing almost 34.5 litres of liquor per year, against Kerala where people drank only 10.2 liters per year. 
 
The reasons for this are many. Income seems to be the most influencing factor in encouraging the drinking binge. When the upper middle class or the rich are taken into consideration, the number only falls for a brief while before rising by a good 5% in terms of consuming alcohol. 
 
In urban areas, the country liquor doesn’t have many takers unless the place witnesses high migratory labour such as construction workers or labourers who can only afford the cheap liquor after a hard day’s work. 
 
The numbers are alarming given the fact that alcohol contributes to nearly 3.3 million deaths in India, which come under the global percentage of 5.9%. 
 
Though health monitoring agencies have been issuing warnings at regular intervals about alcohol causing hemorrhage, TB, epilepsy and strokes leading to death, the caution seems to have fallen on deaf ears with India holding up its drink around the year.
