Ruihua has a few lines in his single scene, which takes place at Katy's grandma's with Shang-Chi present.</p><p>The role is small, but Liu hopes that this role could transcend into something more impactful.</p><p>"With Marvel, even like the smallest characters, the smallest cameos, can somehow have a huge impact. And obviously, that's what I'm hoping for in the future," Liu said.</p><p>And Liu has his eye on a particular X-Men role character: Iceman.</p><p>"So Quicksilver would be my first choice, but they've already introduced him into the MCU. So I think it would be cool to play Iceman. He would be first on my list," Liu said.</p><p>In the comics, Iceman's real name is Bobby Drake. However, with <a href="https://thedisinsider.com/2021/03/04/the-x-men-are-reortedly-coming-to-the-mcu-sooner-than-expected-title-called-the-mutants/">rumors that mutants will be introduced in the near-future of the MCU</a>, maybe even in <a href="https://www.insider.com/who-are-the-eternals-cast-2019-7">"Eternals,"</a> any number of background characters in previous MCU movies could now theoretically become a mutant.</p><div type="image" title="Dallas Liu Shawn Ashmore Iceman X-Men" height="1200" width="1600" msid="86846171" hostid="261"></div><p>Iceman was previously played by Shawn Ashmore, who portrayed the comic book character in the original "X-Men" movie trilogy, plus 2014's "X-Men: Days of Future Past."</p><p>While that version of Iceman shared an onscreen romance with Anna Paquin's Rogue, Bobby Drake is actually <a href="https://www.insider.com/avengers-mcu-characters-who-are-gay-lgbtq-in-comics-2019-5">gay in the comics</a> and had an entire storyline about coming to terms with his sexuality. Liu said that he would "welcome" this diversity in the MCU and feels like "anything is possible," although he said he's aware that <a href="https://www.insider.com/why-marvel-cinematic-universe-gay-superhero-2020-6">the idea of a gay superhero</a> would not please everyone.</p><p>"I feel like where the world is mentally right now, it is possible. We've established an Asian superhero in 'Shang-Chi' and with the 'Eternals,' that cast is extremely diverse. I feel like the opportunities are endless and who knows what could happen in the future," Liu said.</p><p>Liu told Insider about his affirming experience on the set of "Shang-Chi," in which <a href="https://www.insider.com/shang-chi-actor-dallas-liu-awkwafina-advice-on-set-2021-10">Awkwafina offered him advice and assured him there is a place for him in the film industry</a> after he had been having doubts about his future.</p>

In fact, Awkwafina took the time to have multiple conversations with Liu about his career and told the 20-year-old actor how impressed she was with his work on the movie and his professionalism.</p><p>"I had a couple of conversations with Awkwafina off-set and we connected pretty well," Liu told Insider. "She gave me some affirmation, just telling me that I did have a place in this industry. She told me that she was impressed with how I had my lines memorized already and I just came prepared."</p><p>"She told me just to be patient," he continued. "I guess that's what everyone says in the industry, but hearing it from her really made me believe that I could do it."</p><p>Liu said that being on set with stars like Awkwafina and Simu Liu gave him a renewed sense of confidence in his acting career. </p><div type="image" title="Shang-Chi Awkwafina Simu Liu" height="1200" width="1600" msid="86792440" hostid="261"></div><p>This came at a vital time for Liu who, up until working on "Shang-Chi," said he had begun to question his future in Hollywood. Liu had previously starred in several TV shows, including the Emmy-nominated "PEN15," but work had started to slow down for the young actor.</p><p>"Things were kind of slow before and then COVID hit," he said. "It was really taking a toll on my mental [health] - whether or not this career path was really for me. It just slowed down a ton and I'd graduated high school and I went to community college, but I wanted to be doing more with my life."</p><p>Then, "Shang-Chi" came along.</p><p>"That's when Awkwafina told me, 'You can do this. You definitely have a place here.' I had been questioning that for a while leading up to my time working there, so the experience gave me the confidence to keep pushing," Liu said.</p><div type="image" title="Dallas Liu PEN15" height="1200" width="1600" msid="86792442" hostid="261"></div><p>Liu added that while he doesn't consider "Shang-Chi" to be his big break just yet, he believes it will come soon. The young actor has been cast as Prince Zuko in Netflix's upcoming live-action adaptation of <a href="https://www.insider.com/avatar-the-last-airbender-universe-timeline-history-korra-kyoshi-2020-8">"Avatar: The Last Airbender,"</a> a popular character in the beloved animated series.</p><p>This "dream role" for Liu could be his big break. And thanks to Awkwafina and "Shang-Chi," Liu said he feels much more confident that things will work out for him in the industry.</p><p>"I feel like if I work hard enough, things will start to come my way."</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Netflix has adapted the beloved cartoon "Avatar: The Last Airbender" into a live-action show. </li><li>The series will premiere in 2024 and stars Daniel Dae Kim and Dallas Liu.</li></ul><p>Netflix is bringing one of the best animated series ever back into live-action with its upcoming adaptation of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/avatar-netflix-watch-best-cartoon-tv-show-impact-last-airbender-2020-5">"Avatar: The Last Airbender."</a></p><p>The original animated series, created by Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino, ran for three seasons at Nickelodeon in the mid-2000s.</p><p>Since then, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/avatar-the-last-airbender-universe-timeline-history-korra-kyoshi-2020-8">the "Avatar" universe</a> has become a rich fantasy world, with sequel series <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/the-legend-of-korra-avatar-the-last-airbender-netflix-sequel-2020-5">"The Legend of Korra,"</a> <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/the-shadow-of-kyoshi-book-review-avatar-f-c-yee-2020-8">YA novels,</a> and comics expanding the story.</p><p>This isn't the first time someone has taken a stab at bringing "Avatar" into live-action: <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/m-night-shyamalan-movies-ranked-critics-scores-2023-2">M. Utkarsh Ambudkar ("Pitch Perfect") plays King Bumi, the leader of the Earth Kingdom city of Omashu and Aang's childhood friend.</p><p>And Danny Pudi ("Mythic Quest") plays the Mechanist, an inventor who's attempting to provide for his son. You also might recognize Momona Tamada of "The Baby-Sitters Club" as Ty Lee, Azula's acrobatic best friend, and George Takei as the voice of Koh, a face-stealing spirit.</p><h2><strong>Why did the original 'Avatar' creators leave the Netflix project?</strong></h2><div type="image" title="&quot;Avatar&quot; creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko in 2014" height="1258" width="2000" msid="105107211" hostid="261"></div><p>In August 2020, Michael Dante DiMartino, one of the creators of the original "Avatar: The Last Airbender" animated series, revealed in a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.michaeldantedimartino.com/an-open-letter-to-avatar-the-last-airbender-fans/">blog post</a> that he and co-creator Bryan Konietzko had departed from the Netflix project.</p><p>DiMartino wrote that he and Konietzko had been brought on to the live-action series as executive producers and showrunners and that at the time, Netflix said it was "committed to honoring our vision."</p><p>In his <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tumblr.com/bryankonietzko/626285212214673409/before-i-get-to-the-crux-of-this-statement-i">own blog post</a>, Konietzko said Netflix did not uphold that promise.</p><p>"Though I got to work with some great individuals, both on Netflix's side and on our own small development team, the general handling of the project created what I felt was a negative and unsupportive environment," He wrote.</p><p>Both creators wrote in their posts that the decision to leave was hard, and while the show has the potential to resonate with fans, it will not be what they envisioned.</p><p>"To be clear, this was not a simple matter of us not getting our way," Konietzko wrote. "Mike and I are collaborative people; we did not need all of the ideas to come from us. As long as we felt those ideas were in line with the spirit and integrity of 'Avatar', we would have happily embraced them. However, we ultimately came to the belief that we would not be able to meaningfully guide the direction of the series."</p><p>In an email statement to Insider at the time, a Netflix spokesperson addressed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/netflix-avatar-last-airbender-live-action-show-worries-creators-exit-2020-8">the "Avatar" creators' exit</a>.</p><p>"We have complete respect and admiration for Michael and Bryan and the story that they created in the Avatar animated series," the statement read. "Although they have chosen to depart the live action project, we are confident in the creative team and their adaptation."</p><h2>Netflix released the first teaser trailer for 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' in November</h2><p>Netflix released a teaser trailer for the series on Thursday, giving fans the most in-depth look into the live-action universe so far.</p><p>Those familiar with the series should be able to spot some familiar locales, like Fire Lord Ozai's throne room, Kyoshi Island, and the Earth Kingdom city of Omashu. And more importantly, we got our first look at the crew's animal friends: Appa, Aang's flying bison, and Momo, a winged lemur.</p><p>The trailer also brings back the iconic main theme of the original animated "Avatar" series.</p>
