<ul class="summary-list"><li>An <keyword id="6355999" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ai" source="Orion">AI</keyword> Salvador Dalí is now taking questions at The Dalí Museum.</li><li>The AI Dalí can answer questions about his work and was created using OpenAI's GPT-4.</li></ul><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/walt-disney-salvador-dali-friendship-2015-7">Salvador Dalí</a> is now a <keyword id="21390605" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lobster-phone" source="Orion">lobster phone</keyword> call away.<br /><br />The Dalí <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/german-art-museum-fired-employee-secretly-hanging-up-own-painting-2024-4">Museum</a> in Florida recently unveiled a copy of Dalí's "Lobster Telephone" sculpture that allows visitors to call an AI version of the famous artist.<br /><br />The robo-Dalí can answer questions about his paintings and prints when people speak into the receiver, according to a YouTube video from the museum.<br /><br />"For years, people have attempted to understand my work, trying to find meaning in this real, to make sense of the dreams of a historic genius," the AI Dalí says in the video. "But how can anyone possibly know what is inside the burning mind of Salvador Dalí? No, they simply cannot. They are mere mortal human beings. But now, I can tell you."<br /><br />AI <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/salvador-dali-mastered-the-power-nap-2016-3">Dalí</a> explains that he came into being using a large language model and a recreation of his voice — though he also clarifies that this is far beyond his understanding.<br /><br />Goodby Silverstein &amp; Partners, the ad agency behind the crustacean-themed phone, used information about Dalí sourced from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-training-data-source-solutions-openai-meta-google-2024-4">OpenAI's GPT-4 </a>and voice samples from archival interviews to put together a convincing-sounding Dalí dupe,the company shared with Business Insider.<br /><br />In the video demo, actors asked about Dalí's art ("Why are the clocks melting?") or his quirky, upturned mustache. Martin Pagh Ludvigsen at Goodby Silverstein &amp; Partners told Business Insider that since the museum unveiled the phone on April 11, Dalí has been fielding between 400-500 questions a day.<br /><br />What Ludvigsen found from analyzing Dalí's answers is that real visitors will ask the artist just about anything — even love advice.<br /><br />"Any question about love will go back to his love for his wife, Gala," Ludvigsen said.<br /><br />Business Insider tested the bot by asking it questions about Dalí's artwork. The bot speaks with grandiose, flowery language, often injecting references to surrealism, dreams, life, and death — subjects the real Dalí explored on the canvas.<br /><br />Dalí also revealed that he is not a frequent reader of this publication.<strong><br /><br /></strong>"Business Insider, you say? I sip from the cup of imagination, not from the trough of market fluctuations. Because of its guardrails, it tends to be more upbeat than the real Dalí may have been in certain situations, Ludvigsen said.<br /><br />There's also the issue of AI hallucination — where models spit out answers that have no basis in reality. Ludvigsen pointed out, however, that hallucinations can work in their favor, considering the real Dalí's mind often worked outside reality.<br /><br />AI has become a popular tool for businesses and fans to recreate the likeness of well-loved celebrities, alive or dead. Some <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-paying-celebrity-faces-of-ai-chatbots-as-much-as-5-million-2023-10">celebrities</a> are enthusiastically on board. Still, it raises ethical questions about those who cannot consent.<br /><br />Recently, South By Southwest attendees got to speak to an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-marilyn-monroe-raises-questions-about-ethics-of-artificial-intelligence-2024-3#:~:text=People%20are%20using%20AI%20to,everyone%20is%20excited%20about%20it.&amp;text=South%20By%20Southwest%20attendees%20got,likeness%20in%20the%20AI%20project.">AI chatbot of famed actor Marilyn Monroe</a>. Although Monroe's estate signed off on using her likeness, we'll never know if Monroe herself would have wanted to be used for an AI demonstration at a festival in Texas.<br /><br />And on Friday, artist Drake used the AI voice of celebrated rapper Tupac Shakur in a diss track aimed at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/drake-taylor-swift-kendrick-lamar-diss-track-tupac-snoop-dogg-2024-4">Kendrick Lamar.</a><br /><br />Ludvigsen told BI that he and his team had thought through this ethical quandary — and continue to consider it as other clients express interest in replicating the experience with different artists.<br /><br />"If we were to recreate another artist this way, I would want to make sure that we could point to evidence in their writings or their art or even maybe their foundations — whatever they have left behind — that this is something this artist would want us to do," Ludvigsen said.<br /><br />As for whether Dalí would approve of his likeness being used, AI Dalí told BI that becoming digitized is a "splendid metamorphosis."<br /><br />And Dalí scholar Elliott King <a target="_blank" href="https://www.npr.org/2024/04/21/1246117954/salvador-dali-artificial-intelligence-lobster-telephone-museum">told NPR</a> he believes the late artist may enjoy knowing his voice will live on through his lobster phone.<br /><br />"He was so interested in scientific advancements," King told the publication. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>'s Lee Family has found a way to pare down their massive $10.78 billion <keyword id="472491" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Inheritance-tax">inheritance tax</keyword> bill.</li><li>The Lees are unloading a treasure trove of 23,000 <keyword id="1105" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="art">art</keyword> pieces, including Picassos and Dalis.</li><li>The art, worth some $1.8 billion, will be donated to South Korean national museums.</li></ul><p>The family of late Samsung Electronics chairman Lee Kun Hee is donating a treasure trove of around 23,000 art pieces to South Korean museums, to shave a healthy sum off the massive tax bill they need to pay off within five years. </p><p>The art collection includes pieces from Salvador Dalí, Pablo <keyword id="102428" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Picasso">Picasso</keyword>, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and will go to several national museums in the country. </p><p>According to the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2021/apr/28/family-samsung-chair-donate-picassos-dalis-cut-inheritance-tax-bill-lee-kun-hee">Guardian</a>, the family's collection includes masterpieces by Korean artists Park Soo-keun, Lee Jung-seop, and Kim Whan-ki, and valuable collector's items.</p><p><a href="https://en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN20210428006800315">Yonhap News</a> reported that the art collection has been valued at around 2 trillion won (or $1.8 billion). </p><p>"The late Chairman Lee's collection of antiques, Western paintings, and works by Korean artists - approximately 23,000 pieces in total - will be donated to national organizations in recognition of his passion for collecting and his belief in the importance of passing on our cultural heritage to new generations," the conglomerate said in a statement seen by Yonhap. </p><p>Some notable pieces that will be donated include <a href="https://arthive.com/marcchagall/works/494399~The_bride_and_groom_with_a_bouquet_of_flowers">Marc Chagall's Bride and Groom with Bouquet</a>, and <a href="https://www.salvador-dali.org/en/artwork/catalogue-raisonne-paintings/obra/494/family-of-marsupial-centaurs">Dalí's Family of Marsupial Centaurs</a>.</p><p>Yonhap <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="news">News</keyword> wrote that the art collection also contains cultural artifacts from the Goryeo (918-1392) and Joseon (1392-1910) dynasties. This includes the Joseon-era landscape painting <a href="https://artsandculture.google.com/entity/inwang-jesaekdo/m0fs20q?hl=en">"Inwangjesaekdo"</a> by Korean painter Jeong Seon, a piece that was designated as a national treasure in 1984.</p><div type="image" title="Inwangjesaekdo" height="2583" width="3444" msid="82303642" hostid="261"></div><p>Art website <a href="https://www.artnews.com/art-news/news/samsung-donation-art-lee-kun-hee-1234591084/">ARTnews</a> reported that two <keyword id="43918" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Korea">Korea</keyword>n museums are likely to benefit from the donation. More than 20,000 pieces will go to Seoul's National Museum of Korea, and some 1,200 pieces will be donated to the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. The MMCA told ARTnews that it would be organizing an exhibition highlighting the gift collection, titled "Masterpieces of Lee Kun-hee's Collection," with possible tours to museums around South Korea and even internationally. </p><p>The Lees were <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/samsungs-lee-family-to-pay-more-than-12-trln-won-inheritance-taxes-2021-4">slapped with a $12 trillion won (around $10.87 billion) tax bill,</a> a record amount in South Korea - as the country has a 50% inheritance tax rate. According to the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/business-56911094#:~:text=At%2050%25%2C%20South%20Korea's%20inheritance,the%20top%20rate%20even%20higher.her.">BBC</a>, this percentage is the world's second-highest, after Japan, which <a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Politics/Japan-to-lure-overseas-finance-talent-with-inheritance-tax-break">pegs its inheritance tax at 55%</a>.</p><p><a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Technology/Samsung-Lee-clan-to-pay-nearly-11bn-inheritance-tax-over-5-years">Nikkei Asia</a> reported that Lee's wife and three children said they were happy to pay the tax bill in a rare public statement.</p><p>"It is our civic duty and responsibility to pay all taxes," they said, noting that "the inheritance tax payment is one of the largest ever in Korea and globally." The family did not mention how the patriarch's stock holdings would be divvied up, and whether any part of it would be sold. </p><p>The patriarch's heirs being made to pay such a massive tax bill is no surprise, as <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/gracechung/2020/10/24/lee-kun-hee-legendary-head-of-samsung-and-koreas-richest-man-dies-at-78/?sh=7d2f95c65acd">Lee Kun Hee held the title of South Korea's richest man for 12 years</a>. </p><p>The Samsung family is <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/04/28/samsung-inheritance-lee-family-to-pay-over-10-billion-inheritance-tax.html">South Korea's largest chaebol, or family-run conglomerate</a>, and Lee's death in October last year at the age of 78 cast some uncertainty over how the family would pay the bill, and <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-samsung-lee-inheritance-factbox-idUSKBN27C0MZ">whether it would affect the family's long-standing influence or dilute their stake in the company.</a></p><p>According to the <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/samsungs-lee-family-to-offload-picassos-monets-as-it-settles-gargantuan-tax-bill-11619575441">Wall Street Journal,</a> the Lee clan also intends to donate more than $900 million to their philanthropic efforts - which will go to building medical facilities in South Korea and helping children with cancer and rare diseases. The Lees will also not be taxed for this donation. </p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Marc Evan started Maniac Pumpkin Carvers with his childhood friend after graduating from college.</li><li>Now they run a team of artists out of a warehouse in Yonkers, New York.</li></ul><p><em>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Marc Evan, the co-owner of Maniac Pumpkin Carvers. It has been edited for length and clarity.</em></p><p>Pumpkins have a relatively short shelf life. This means for artists like me, whose seasonal business primarily revolves around carving pumpkins, there's no room for error or do-overs.</p><div type="image" title="A Maniac Pumpkin Carvers-branded pumpkin" height="1280" width="860" msid="95165540" hostid="261" sizebytes="38830"></div><p>Unlike canvas, where you have the luxury of pausing and returning to your work, when it comes to a perishable medium like a pumpkin, it's a race against the clock to get the job done and the finished product out the door and into the client's hands. No matter how far in advance a client commissions a job, we typically carve everything within 24 hours of when it's needed to ensure it looks its best.</p><p>I run <a href="https://www.maniacpumpkincarvers.com/">Maniac Pumpkin Carvers</a>, which I started in 2008 with my childhood friend Chris Soria after graduating from college. We work out of a temporary, 6,000-square-foot storefront in Westchester, New York, and our sought-after carved creations start at $150 and can go into the thousands.</p><p>Our pumpkins have been displayed at The Museum of Modern Art and Yankee Stadium. We also provide both virtual and in-person carving classes, corporate workshops and team-building events, and live demos, and we even make and sell carving kits for DIY-types.</p><h2><strong>It often takes 10 or more hours to carve a single pumpkin</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Two men" height="4032" width="3024" msid="95165544" hostid="261" sizebytes="763574"></div><p>The timing depends on its size and the design. Our artist-inspired series, which recreates masterpieces from the likes of Picasso, Van Gogh, Dali, and da Vinci, which are among my favorite projects, can take 16 to 20 hours for each pumpkin.</p><p>It's good practice in nonattachment, as there's something beautiful and magical that occurs with knowing from the outset that our creations are only temporary. When I'm carving a pumpkin, I get into a sort of Zen flow state that becomes more about the process than the product.</p><p>The most challenging part that goes into the process isn't the perishability factor or the hours it takes to carve a pumpkin but all the logistics surrounding the project that need to be addressed before we're even in a position to sit down and begin carving.</p><h2><strong>When you take your art and turn it into a business, there's a lot of prep work and components that need to be factored in</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Mona Lisa on a pumpkin" height="480" width="640" msid="95165546" hostid="261" sizebytes="21642"></div><p>Because we work with a lot of corporate clients, there are often nondisclosure agreements to sign, since we're involved in brand-related discussions with their team; substantial insurance requirements, especially in instances in which we're working on-site for a live event or demo and it involves attendees; and tons of back-and-forth with clients about what the design, logo, or branding will end up looking like.</p><p>The sheer number of conference calls and meetings that occur before we can even pick up a tool and start carving would blow your mind. Those alone can often take way longer than the carving time. Everything from the intricacy of the design to the amount of time it will take our carvers to complete the project to the time we spend on prep work is taken into account when it comes to our pricing.</p><p>We once had to carve 50 pumpkins in 36 hours for the MLB World Series in New York when the Yankees played. This job blew our minds because first off, we're New Yorkers, but also because it was the most pumpkins we'd had in a single order at that point by far.</p><h2><strong>Pumpkin carving as an art form has grown exponentially over the years</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Jack Nicholson on a pumpkin" height="1365" width="1820" msid="95165550" hostid="261" sizebytes="53114"></div><p>When Chris and I first launched the website for Maniac Pumpkin Carvers, we got in at the right time and were considered pioneers in the field because no one was really doing what we were to the extent we were. We were really taking a nostalgic pastime like pumpkin carving that we did at home as kids and elevating it into an art form.</p><div type="image" title="Two guys carving pumpkins" height="1536" width="2048" msid="95165554" hostid="261" sizebytes="122236"></div><p>Word about us got out after Wired did an<a href="https://www.wired.com/2009/10/gallery-jack-o-lanterns/"> article</a> on us in 2009. That's when our phone started ringing with commissions and event inquiries from the Food Network and Martha Stewart, which is ironic since Chris and I first learned basic pumpkin-carving techniques watching Martha on TV as kids.</p><p>That's when we realized that this could be more than just a little thing we did on the side. But back then, there was no playbook or business model for what we were doing, so we just learned along the way. Everything about business was new to us, from where to source the pumpkins to experimenting with new styles and techniques to determining pricing to figuring out delivery.</p><p>Today, our clients include American Express, BMW, CBS, Delta, Disney, Marvel, NBC, the NFL, Nickelodeon, Pepsi, Porsche, and "Saturday Night Live."</p><h2><strong>In the early stages of the business, Chris and I were roommates and started it out of our apartment</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Paddington on a pumpkin" height="640" width="635" msid="95165557" hostid="261" sizebytes="41696"></div><p>Chris and I first met back in 1992, when we were in middle school on Long Island. We always did a ton of scary, spooky artwork and loved to celebrate Halloween.</p><p>After high school, Chris and I both went to Parsons School of Design in New York City. When we weren't in class, we worked at a series of local bars and restaurants around town.</p><p>We were roommates after we graduated from college, and each year for Halloween we'd throw elaborate costume parties and carve pumpkins for fun, often bringing them to our jobs and displaying them for the holiday. It wasn't long before people took notice of our work, and before we knew it we were getting inquiries about commissions and requests to do live demos.</p><div type="image" title="A witch carved into a pumpkin" height="960" width="1280" msid="95165560" hostid="261" sizebytes="43018"></div><p>The farmers market Union Square Greenmarket in downtown Manhattan was home base for us for a very long time. It was a great place to display our work to the public. Plus, we established a lot of friendships with farmers we still work with today.</p><p>Back then, it was always a funny experience trying to hail a taxi from the Greenmarket and stuff 30 pumpkins into the back seat. One of us would bait the taxi in and pretend they weren't with the guy with all the pumpkins, and as soon as the taxi pulled over we'd both start dumping pumpkins in and promising we'd tip really well.</p><h2>As we outgrew our apartment, we'd rent everything from small commercial spaces to pop-up storefronts and warehouses</h2><div type="image" title="Alice in Wonderland on a pumpkin" height="960" width="1280" msid="95165562" hostid="261" sizebytes="49618"></div><p>For the past two years, from September to November, Maniac headquarters have been inside a vacant storefront in Ridge Hill, an open-air shopping mall in Yonkers. We've got a lot more space now than we did previously — plus there's a good deal of foot traffic here. It's also a lot easier to just deliver into New York City than to actually work in the city and deal with traffic.</p><p>We have stations for our team of artists, a photo studio where we produce time-lapse videos and social-media content for clients, and space to teach in-person classes and workshops. We have a core crew of six artists and are able to bring in other artists as needed. We've also got an in-house crew of studio assistants as well as support staff and delivery people. Our team varies between 10 and 20 people, depending on what we've got going on, and we mostly find people through word of mouth.</p><h2><strong>Because pumpkin season is so short, it's like a crash course in pumpkin carving for the artists we bring on board</strong></h2><div type="image" title="A &quot;Will you marry me?&quot; pumpkin" height="426" width="568" msid="95165565" hostid="261" sizebytes="17252"></div><p>We typically recruit top-level artists who have certain skill sets and whom we're confident we can quickly teach how to carve pumpkins; we believe it's easier to take a great artist and turn them into a pumpkin carver than bring in someone with carving experience and try to teach them how to make better artwork. Most of the time, our artists hand-carve the pumpkins and rely on tools like chisels, knives, and clay-sculpting tools versus using anything electric or powered.</p><p>We get a healthy mix of commissions, corporate and social events, advertising, live and virtual classes, and demos, and we have a very finite window of time to make it all happen. Some evenings, I don't even make it home to my wife and kids.</p><p>Once we get into October, me, Chris, and some of our artists pretty much work around the clock and take naps in the studio when we need to recharge. On average, Chris and I can work 20 hours a day, seven days a week, during the month of October. Sometimes several days go by when we haven't left the studio unless we're running out to a live event or demo.</p><p>That's why we call ourselves Maniacs, I guess.</p>

"Others simply want to secure capital now to ensure they are financially well positioned over the coming months and beyond."</p><p>To be sure, there is evidence of that this type of liquidation is having a counter effect: wealthy people, collectors, and galleries sensing an opportunity and buying more art than before.  <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-16/wealthy-seeking-cash-for-investing-margin-calls-turn-to-art">Bloomberg's Katya Kazakina and Tom Metcalf reported</a> that wealthy people have been buying art at massive rates to shift their stock into "real assets."</p><p>Art financing has long been popular with investors, because art is seen as a "value-preserving asset class," as noted by <a href="https://www2.deloitte.com/lu/en/pages/art-finance/articles/art-finance-report.html">Deloitte's 2019 Art &amp; Finance report.</a> Artwork in general isn't necessarily impacted by the risks commonly associated with the financial market, which makes it a lower call risk as an investment, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-16/wealthy-seeking-cash-for-investing-margin-calls-turn-to-art">Kazakina and Metcalf reported</a>.</p><p>For example, it took the S&amp;P 500 five years to recover from the 2008 recession, while it took the<a href="http://www.artnet.com/artists/top-300-artists/"> Artnet Index for the Top 100 Artists</a> only three years. During the 2015 and 2016 market sell-offs, though both the S&amp;P and <a href="http://www.artnet.com/artists/top-300-artists/">Artnet Index</a> took a hit, <a href="https://www2.deloitte.com/lu/en/pages/art-finance/articles/art-finance-report.html">Deloitte</a> found that, when broken down by price bracket, high end works of art worth at least $1 million were able to lead a comeback in some art categories.</p><p>Since art is regarded as being a luxury item, it often rebounds and grows faster than traditional assets do. "We estimate that there is more than $10 billion in leverage secured by major art collections. Most art loans begin at $10 million and exceed <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-04-09/ultra-wealthy-pull-cash-from-mansions-to-buy-beaten-down-assets">$1 billion in collateral value</a>." </p><h2>As a recession looms, the art world waits to see what's next</h2><p>Interest rates for art lending have fallen dramatically over the past few years, attracting more companies and art collectors that are looking to secure loans. In fact, von Habsburg said that last year alone, Winston Art Group appraised more than $3 billion worth of art to be used as collateralized loans.</p><p>"The benefits now as in the past are many - it is a way to make that asset class work as a financial tool; it is an alternate source of liquidity in a normally rather illiquid asset," she said. "For those collectors or dealers who have large stocks of stored art that is not being hung or transacted, that art generates funds rather than sits as a static asset; and the art can be held and hung on collectors' walls even while being used as collateral."</p><p class="source"><span>Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Art shows, fairs, and private and public auctions have been canceled amid the coronavirus pandemic. Museums around the world, such as the Louvre and the Met, have also closed, as have the galas usually thrown to help raise money for them.</p><p>But there could be a negative side to using art as collateral, she said, which could become more apparent over the next few months. Especially because this season's art shows and auctions have been postponed, while private sales have started to slow down.</p><p>"The current situation, it is not just a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-careers-derailed-like-older-millennials-if-recession-hits-2020-3">financial crisis</a>.  It is also a crisis of the health of so many people worldwide," she continued. "I would imagine that the art market will be slower to recover than after the 2008 financial crisis, as galleries go out of business, leaving many artists without gallery representation, auction houses retrench, furloughing wide swaths of specialists across lower revenue areas of the market, and sales remain 'virtual' for longer periods of time."</p><p class="source"><span>SeventyFour / Shutterstock</span></p><p class="caption">Naomi Baigell, managing director of Marketing and Client Relations at Athena Art Finance, told Business Insider that "Art holds a special place in the world of assets," and "Collectors tend to be very personally committed to the artists they collect, to their works and to the inherent and immeasurable cultural and social values they represent."</p>Meanwhile, as a recession continues to threaten the global economy, von Habsburg predicted that some art portfolios, such as contemporary or modern art, might need additional collateral to "maintain their ratios of loan to value." But, she said, this could prove difficult for those who do not have excess work to place into the portfolio.<p>"Works may have to be sold to cover the debt, and the market has a sharp nose for works being sold under duress, which can lead to lower than normal financial results," according to von Habsburg.</p><p>Cynthia Sachs, chief investment officer of Athena Art Finance, somewhat agreed with von Habsburg.</p><p>"Art collectors are waiting until the public part of the market opens to sell their art, while art investors are using this time to find interesting stressed opportunities," Sachs told Business Insider. "This global pandemic is clearly a new paradigm for all asset classes. Wealthy people are considering liquidating their art assets to obtain cash amid the looming recession

<p>Through the school's Allen Memorial Art Museum, each semester <keyword id="3216" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="students">students</keyword> <a href="http://oberlin.edu/amam/artrent.html">can rent original works by some of the biggest names in art history</a> to hang in their dorm rooms. The <a href="http://oberlin.edu/amam/documents/top20fall2013.pdf">top choices this semester</a> included paintings from Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Roy Lichtenstein, and Pablo <keyword id="102428" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Picasso">Picasso</keyword>. </p>
<p>The fee to rent a painting is $5 per semester, and students may only take out two works at a time. The program has been in place since 1940, according to the WSJ, and the college says that no piece has ever been lost or damaged.</p>
<p>Not only is this a great opportunity to spice up a dorm room, but it also shows prospective Oberliners a unique side of the school. As one student told the WSJ, "I came to Oberlin because I was so impressed with a school that trusted students to handle Picassos and Matisses."</p>

<p class="p1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div>When I arrived at the Brooklyn space I was told I had to "wait to be picked."</p><p class="p1">The Crown Heights event promised to teach me how to pickpocket. From the outside, the space appeared to be mostly open, enclosed by two buildings. There were maybe three other people standing outside also waiting to be picked.</p><p class="p1">So I stood on the sidewalk twiddling my thumbs until a woman kneeling underneath a tent beckoned me to sign in. She then asked me to produce a dollar and write down "a desire you want taken or a desire you want back." I did so and was instructed to keep it in a somewhat easily accessible place. <strong><br /></strong></p><p class="p1">It begins.</p><h2 class="p1">Artists have been throwing "parties" like this forever.</h2><p class="p1">This party billed itself a "Pickpocket Rent Party," in that the people throwing it (a group of artists) were raising funds to pay their rent and it purported to teach attendees how to pickpocket.</p><p class="p1">It's a pretty straightforward name. </p><p class="p1">The collective is named "1067 Pacific People," which also happens to be the address. So straightforwardness is kind of this group's thing.</p><p class="p1">In the grand scheme of things, an art party claiming to teach how to pickpocket isn't the most outlandish of themes. Salvador Dali once <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=vg6i4E0Woak">hosted a benefit</a> where he and his wife dressed in strange paper maché animal-like costumes and fed a baby lion. European artist Marina Abramovic also <a href="http://flavorwire.com/243995/the-naughty-list-the-most-controversial-cultural-icons-of-2011/10">held a gala</a> (that reportedly went for $10,000 a head) where naked performers and seemingly severed heads were strewn about during the dinner. And I can only imagine some of the ideas Warhol executed at his storied Factory space.</p><p class="p1">So in the name of art (and perhaps a tiny hope I would learn a new skill) I decided to shell out the $15 to help these artists keep their space.</p><h2 class="p1">The scene.</h2><p class="p1">The first description I found about this party described the event thus; As it unfolds, "all the party guest become outlaws." In a recent <a href="https://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20150429/crown-heights/art-group-charges-15-teach-you-rob-others-at-pickpocket-party">DNAinfo</a> article, the description<strong> </strong>went further: "We're also going to teach people to steal from themselves," the event's organizer Andrea Haenggi explained to the blog. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><p class="p1">Of course this was all said with an extremely obtuse artistic veneer. When I bought my ticket online I was instructed to bring a dollar or two and to write a message on it "WHAT DESIRE WOULD YOU LIKE TO STEAL BACK?" the event wrote. </p><p class="p1">I began milling around the open area. There were signs strewn about like Tibetan peace flags saying things like "TKS for PICKPOCKETING," "F**K Square," "THIS IS SERIOUS," and "This Space is OUTLAWED."<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><br /></span></p><p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">There were also individual installations of random objects throughout the open space: A mattress with a sign; A few plants atop a carpet; A lamp. Everything had a sign with a message near it.</span></p><p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><br /></span></p><h2 class="p1">The dance of the pickpocket.</h2><p class="p1">As the party went on, I waited for the formal pickpocketing instructions to begin. Instead, a woman accosted me and asked to perform a dance. I accepted. She began by inverting one of her pockets, indicating that it was empty.</p><p class="p1">And then the dance began: Her body began to gyrate to and fro; Her legs moving, arms flailing. She would take off half her jacket then put it back on. Her hands began going in and out of every pocket-like surface on her clothes.</p><p></p><p class="p1">I soon understood that this dance was a sort of trick; she would slip a dollar into the before-empty pocket.</p><p class="p1">It didn't quite work out as planned. Her vigorously moving body caused the dollar in question to fly out from whatever place it was hiding, into the air, landing behind her, without the dancer so much as noticing. She finished the dance, put her hand in the pocket to present the new dollar, and she couldn't find it.</p><p class="p1">I pointed behind her to where it had landed. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;"></span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">She sheepishly picked up the fallen money and read it aloud; "Thank you for allowing my body to be outlawed."</span></p><h2 class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The woman behind it all.</span></h2><p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I continued walking around after this and was met by another woman. She had long hair with purple tips, baggy pants, and a vaguely European accent. She was clearly the center of this event - the Andrea quoted in the article I read. We chatted for some time and she asked if one of the pickpockets had seen me and if I was impressed by their talents. I felt obligated to inform her of the flying dollar mishap.</span></p><p class="p1">The party was obviously Andrea's child. Some Googling indicated that she has been an active New York-based performance artist for years. Her first collective artist space was in the neighborhood of Williamsburg, but she got priced out in 2012. She moved her work to Crown Heights in the hopes of cheaper rent, but Crown Heights is steadily seeing the same rent-hike fate as Williamsburg.</p><p class="p1">This party/workshop is meant both a statement about systemic thievery as well as a potential new revenue stream for the 1067 Pacific People. In fact, Andrea told me she may throw more parties of this sort.</p><p class="p1">Andrea's <a href="http://www.andreahaenggi.net/about.html">artist bio</a> describes her as an "<span>interdisciplinary artist, choreographer, dancer, improviser and teacher." Her work has been featured at the well-known modern art museum Mass MoCA, and she has performed around the world. </span></p><p class="p1"><span>This event is another notch in her proverbial performance art belt, albeit much less attended than any storied museum. </span></p><p class="p1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p class="p1">The event continued; people awkwardly stood, talking, while different woman approached them, danced, and produced dollars from thin air. There were about 15 of us, which seemed like a pretty small crowd for a how-to on how to pickpocket. </p><h2 class="p1">Here's where I learned to steal...kind of.</h2><p class="p1">Finally we were all called to an area where Andrea and two other woman stood. The demonstration was finally about to begin. </p><p class="p1">"I want to let you become outlaws," the artist proclaimed. "I want to teach you how to pickpocket. I want you to come closer." She then had us stretch out hand. "Stretch and expand your possibility," she ordered. And so we did. Or at least tried. </p><p class="p1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p class="p1">She then had use make a "ball of energy" with our hands. The instructions started getting confusing. "Make a ball. Don't expand the energy," she said. But while doing this her hand was expanding. I didn't know how to not expand energy or if there even was energy in the nonexistent ball I was making with my hands.</p><p class="p1">Then she told us to pinch our fingers. And so we did. Then she told us to "roll the coin," motioning as if a coin were in her hand. It continued like this for some time until she decided we were ready. </p><p class="p1">Andrea said that we had to pick with a "firm, easy hand." She then pantomimed the action. She instructed us to "rotate," while moving her hand. I am still not sure what this means. And finally she said that we had to give the victim a "firm bony touch."</p><p class="p1">To recap, how to pickpocket: form some energy in your hand, roll your fingers, grab people with a bony grip while picking their pockets with a firm easy hand. And then rotate. She then told us to practice with the audience.</p><p class="p1">About a dozen complete strangers rambled around an open space trying to grab each other's arms and surreptitiously pick the others' pockets. I spent a good 15 minutes scanning the space while others scanned me. We looked at each other, grabbed a hold of each other, awkwardly lunged toward each other, but none of us knew what we were doing. <span></span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">As I talked to people throughout the night most weren't coming to learn the art of thievery. </span></p><p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In fact, most (if not all other than me) were friends of the artists.</span></p><p class="p1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p class="p1">Following the demonstration, I spent the rest of the night chitchatting with others attendees and occasionally trying to pickpocket people. I also lived in fear of others getting me. Andrea at one point tried to make a game where we ganged up on one person to get their dollar.</p><p class="p1"><span>I hastily stole $1 from a random woman right after the demonstration finished, and a</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">fter about 2 hours I decided to call it quits. People were beginning to leave and it was getting cold. I approached the exit and saw Andrea standing there. I asked if there was more planned for the evening. She said, a bit sad, that if more people came she may do the presentation again.</span></p><p class="p1">After a moment's pause she asked for my dollar. I went to a class where artists promised to teach me how to pickpocket

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source">EastVillage Images/Shutterstock</p></div><p></p></div></div>WASHINGTON (AP) - Campers in national parks are to pull up stakes and leave, some veterans waiting to have disability benefits approved will have to cool their heels even longer, many routine food inspections will be suspended and panda-cams will go dark at the shuttered National Zoo.</p>
<p>Those are among the immediate effects when parts of the government shut down Tuesday because of the budget impasse in Congress.</p>
<p>In this time of argument and political gridlock, a blueprint to manage federal dysfunction is one function that appears to have gone smoothly. Throughout government, plans are ready to roll out to keep essential services running and numb the impact for the public. The longer a shutdown goes on, the more it will be felt in day-to-day lives and in the economy as a whole.</p>
<p>A look at what is bound to happen, and what probably won't:</p>
<p>___</p>
<p>THIS: Washington's paralysis will be felt early on in distant lands as well as in the capital - namely, at national parks. All park services will close. Campers have 48 hours to leave their sites. Many parks, such as Yellowstone, will close to traffic, and some will become completely inaccessible. Smithsonian museums in Washington will close and so will the zoo, where panda cams record every twitch and cuddle of the panda cub born Aug. 23 but are to be turned off in the first day of a shutdown.</p>
<p>The Statue of Liberty in New York, the loop road at Acadia National Park in Maine, Skyline Drive in Virginia, and Philadelphia's Independence National Historical Park, home of Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, will be off limits. At Grand Canyon National Park, people will be turned back from entrance gates and overlooks will be cordoned off along a state road inside the park that will remain open.</p>
<p>"People who waited a year to get a reservation to go to the bottom of the Grand Canyon all of a sudden will find themselves without an opportunity to take that trip," said Mike Litterst, a spokesman for the National Park Service.</p>
<p>BUT NOT THIS: At some parks, where access is not controlled by gates or entrance stations, people can continue to drive, bike and hike. People won't be shooed off the Appalachian Trail, for example, and parks with highways running through them, like the Great Smoky Mountains, also are likely to be accessible. Officials won't scour the entire 1.2 million-acre Grand Canyon park looking for people; those already hiking or camping in the backcountry and on rafting trips on the Colorado River will be able to complete their trips. The care and feeding of the National Zoo's animals will all go on as usual.</p>
<p>The shutdown won't affect Ellis Island or the Washington Monument because they are already closed for repairs.</p>
<p>___</p>
<p>THIS: The Board of Veterans Appeals will stop issuing rulings, meaning decisions about some disability claims by veterans will wait even longer than usual. Interments at national cemeteries will slow. If a shutdown drags on for weeks, disability and pension payments may be interrupted.</p>
<p>BUT NOT THIS: Most Department of Veterans Affairs services will continue; 95 percent of staff are either exempted from a shutdown or have the budget to keep paying them already in place. The department's health programs get their money a year in advance, so veterans can still see their doctor, get prescriptions filled and visit fully operational VA hospitals and outpatient clinics. Claims workers can process benefit payments until late in October, when that money starts to run out.</p>

<p>THIS: New patients won't be accepted into clinical research at the National Institutes of Health, including 255 trials for cancer patients; care will continue for current patients. Federal medical research will be curtailed and the government's ability to detect and investigate disease outbreaks will be harmed. Grant applications will be accepted but not dealt with.</p>
<p>BUT NOT THIS: The show goes on for President Barack Obama's health care law. Tuesday heralds the debut of health insurance markets across the country, which begin accepting customers for coverage that begins in January. Core elements of the law are an entitlement, like Social Security, so their flow of money does not depend on congressional appropriations. That's why Republicans have been trying explicitly to starve the law of money. An impasse in approving a federal budget has little effect on Obamacare. As for NIH operations, reduced hospital staff at the NIH Clinical Center will care for current patients, and research animals will get their usual care.</p>
<p>___</p>
<p>THIS: Most routine food inspections by the Food and Drug Administration will be suspended.</p>
<p>BUT NOT THIS: Meat inspection, done by the Agriculture Department, continues. The FDA will still handle high-risk recalls.</p>
<p>___</p>
<p>THIS: Complaints from airline passengers to the government will fall on deaf ears. The government won't be able to do new car safety testing and ratings or handle automobile recall information. Internal Transportation Department investigations of waste and fraud will be put on ice, and progress will be slowed on replacing the country's radar-based air traffic system with GPS-based navigation. Most accident investigators who respond to air crashes, train collisions, pipeline explosions and other accidents will be furloughed but could be called back if needed.</p>
<p>Kristie Greco, speaking for the Federal Aviation Administration, said nearly 2,500 safety office personnel will be furloughed but may be called back incrementally over the next two weeks. The union representing aviation safety inspectors said it was told by FAA Administrator Michael Huerta that nearly 3,000 inspectors will be off work. Greco did not confirm that.</p>
<p>BUT NOT THIS: Air traffic controllers and many of the technicians who keep air traffic equipment working will remain on the job. Amtrak says it can continue normal operations for a while, relying on ticket revenue, but will suffer without federal subsidies over the longer term. FAA employees who make grants to airports, most Federal Highway Administration workers and federal bus and truck safety inspectors will also stay on the job because they are paid with user fees. Railroad and pipeline safety inspectors will also remain at work.</p>
<p>___</p>
<p>THIS: About half the Defense Department's civilian employees will be furloughed.</p>
<p>BUT NOT THIS: The 1.4 million active-duty military personnel stay on duty and under a last-minute bill, they should keep getting paychecks on time. Most Homeland Security agents and border officers, as well as other law enforcement agents and officers, keep working.</p>
<p>___</p>
<p>THIS: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, known as WIC, could shut down. It provides supplemental food, health care referrals and nutrition education for pregnant women, mothers and their children.</p>
<p>BUT NOT THIS: School lunches and breakfasts will continue to be served, and food stamps, known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, will still be distributed.</p>
<p>___</p>
<p>THIS: A shutdown that lasts two weeks or more would probably start to slow an already sluggish economy, analysts say. Closures of national parks would hurt hotels, restaurants and other tourism-related businesses. And federal workers who lost pay would spend less, thereby curbing economic growth. A three-week shutdown would slow the economy's annual growth rate in the October-December quarter by up to 0.9 of a percentage point, Goldman Sachs has estimated. If so, that could mean a growth rate of 1.6 percent, compared with the 2.5 percent that many economists now forecast.</p>
<p>BUT NOT THIS: Little impact on the economy if the shutdown only lasts a few days.</p>
<p>___</p>
<p>THIS: Economic data will be interrupted as the Bureau of Labor Statistics ceases almost all operations. This will leave the stock market without some of the benchmark economic indicators that drive the market up or down. The key September jobs report, due Friday, could still be released on time if the White House authorizes that, but that's not been determined. Statistical gathering also is being interrupted at the Commerce Department and Census Bureau. This means the government won't come out on time with its monthly report on construction spending Tuesday or a factory orders report Thursday.</p>
<p>BUT NOT THIS: The weekly report on applications for unemployment benefits is still expected Thursday. The Treasury Department's daily report on government finances will be released normally and government debt auctions are to proceed as scheduled. And at Commerce, these functions continue, among others: weather and climate observation, fisheries law enforcement and patent and trademark application processing.</p>
<p>___</p>
<p>THIS: Some passport services located in federal buildings might be disrupted - only if those buildings are forced to close because of a disruption in building support services.</p>
<p>BUT NOT THIS: Except in those instances, passport and visas will be handled as usual, both at home and abroad. These activities of the Bureau of Consular Affairs are fully supported by user fees instead of appropriated money, so are not affected. As well, the government will keep handling green card applications.</p>
<p>___</p>
<p>THIS: The Federal Housing Administration, which insures about 15 percent of new loans for home purchases, will approve fewer loans for its client base - borrowers with low to moderate income - because of reduced staff. Only 67 of 349 employees will keep working. The agency will focus on single-family homes during a shutdown, setting aside loan applications for multi-family dwellings. The Housing and Urban Development Department won't make additional payments to the nation's 3,300 public housing authorities, but the agency estimates that most of them have enough money to keep giving people rental assistance until the end of October.</p>
<p>BUT NOT THIS: It will be business as usual for borrowers seeking loans guaranteed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which together own or guarantee nearly half of all U.S. mortgages and 90 percent of new ones.</p>

<p>THIS: Possible delays in processing new disability applications.</p>
<p>BUT NOT THIS: Social Security and Medicare benefits still keep coming.</p>
