<ul class="summary-list"><li>Several "Bachelor" stars have responded to backlash after receiving coronavirus relief loans.</li><li><keyword id="9837039" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tayshia-adams">Tayshia Adams</keyword>, <keyword id="8938789" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="colton-underwood">Colton Underwood</keyword>, and <keyword id="4982725" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="arie-luyendyk-jr">Arie Luyendyk Jr</keyword>. all received loans over $10,000.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paycheck-protection-program-extended-what-owners-need-to-know-2020-7">Paycheck Protection Program loans</a> are meant to help keep small businesses afloat amid the pandemic.</li></ul><p>"Bachelor" stars Tayshia Adams and Colton Underwood have responded after coming under fire for receiving <a href="https://www.sba.gov/funding-programs/loans/covid-19-relief-options/paycheck-protection-program">PPP loans meant to keep small businesses afloat</a> during the coronavirus pandemic. </p><p>In a <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2021/06/28/bachelor-stars-colton-underwood-tayshia-adams-received-ppp-loans/">statement to TMZ</a>, Adams' representative said, "As a business owner, television and podcast host, and brand ambassador, Tayshia obtained a PPP Loan that enabled her to hire an employee, to whom she offers market-based pay and benefits."</p><p>Adams' rep corroborated their previous statement in an email to Insider.</p><p>"Tayshia used the loan to hire someone who was previously unemployed by a media company and has continued to offer them market rate with benefits after using the loan in full on said employee," they wrote. </p><p>Underwood's representative offered a similar response to TMZ, telling the outlet that it was Underwood's nonprofit (the <a href="https://www.coltonslegacy.org/">Colton Underwood Legacy Foundation</a>, which supports people with cystic fibrosis) that applied for the loan, following the cancellation of fundraising events during the pandemic. </p><p>"None of the PPP went directly to Colton," the statement to TMZ said. "In fact, Colton has never received any form of payment from the foundation, all of the proceeds go directly to people living with cystic fibrosis." </p><p>Representatives for Underwood didn't immediately respond to Insider's requests for additional comment.</p><h2>Several 'Bachelor' stars came under fire for receiving <keyword id="9789072" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ppp-loans">PPP loans</keyword></h2><p>Adams and Underwood, as well as former "Bachelor" Arie Luyendyk, Jr., his wife Lauren Burnham, and "Bachelorette" alum <keyword id="11538914" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="dale-moss">Dale Moss</keyword> received backlash after <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/thebachelor/comments/o8r42y/arie_and_lauren_received_20k_in_ppp_loansyikes/">"Bachelor" subreddit members</a> discovered that the stars had applied for PPP loans. </p><p>Per the US Small Business Administration's <a href="https://www.sba.gov/funding-programs/loans/covid-19-relief-options/paycheck-protection-program">website</a>, Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans were designed to help small businesses keep workers employed during the pandemic. </p><p>Reddit users <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/thebachelor/comments/o8r42y/arie_and_lauren_received_20k_in_ppp_loansyikes/">discovered Monday that Luyendyk, Jr. and Burnham received over $20,000</a> in loans for their LLC, Instagram Husband. </p><p>Redditors also realized that <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/thebachelor/comments/o8sw4q/tayshia_received_a_20k_ppp_loan_for_influencing/">Adams</a> and <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/thebachelor/comments/o9ai1c/looks_like_colton_got_a_ppp_loan_too/">Underwood</a> had received similar loans as well. Moss also <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/thebachelor/comments/o97b7r/dale_received_a_20k_ppp_loan/">applied for a $20,000 loan</a>, but his funds don't appear to have been disbursed yet.</p><p>Representatives for Moss and Burnham didn't immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment. Luyendyk, Jr.'s representative declined to comment. </p><p>After news of the loans began spreading on social media, fans and other "Bachelor" alums weighed in. </p><p>Jason Tartick, who appeared on Becca Kufrin's season of "<keyword id="914894" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="The-Bachelorette">The Bachelorette</keyword>" and is currently engaged to franchise alum and host Kaitlyn Bristowe, broke down the significance of the PPP loans in <a href="https://www.instagram.com/tv/CQru3vqHoAF/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link">an Instagram video</a>. Tartick said he almost applied for a loan himself, but didn't end up going through with it because he believes it's "not fair." </p><p>"Bachelor in Paradise" alum Chris Bukowski wrote in an <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/thebachelor/comments/o9w4zj/chris_bukowskis_comment_on_a_post_about_the_whole/">Instagram comment on TMZ's post about the PPP loan controversy</a> that the system was "broken."</p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/bachelor-nick-viall-felt-pressure-to-find-love-on-show-2021-4">Former "Bachelor" star Nick Viall</a> addressed the story in a tweet, writing "What's legal isn't always right." </p><p>"Applying for a PPP is both savvy and sh-tty," he concluded.</p>

"It was like one week before the proposal and I think our show is nine weeks of filming." </p><p>But Lowe said it was worth noting that due to the pandemic, Crawley and Moss were working under very different circumstances. </p><p>"I think they're honest in saying that they didn't communicate before, but they also had this weird, unprecedented time to kind of look each other up," Lowe said. "She got to do research on the contestants for four months, so she saw what he was doing on a normal basis, which was something that was very attractive to her." </p><div type="image" title="Clare Crawley Dale Moss The Bachelorette" height="3000" width="1998" msid="79270936" hostid="261"></div><p>"So when she saw him in person and it was the exact same person that she had been looking at, I think that's super fair to say that you can fall in love and know that that's your person. "Dale was the one that was being a strong man, but opening up and being vulnerable." </p><p>"I understand that it was fast-paced, but this is the first time a 39-year-old woman has sat up here and been chosen to find the man of her dreams," Crawley added. "I know exactly what I'm looking for and exactly what I want. I've done nothing but respect this entire process and I cannot reiterate that more. "I know he's the first one-on-one and we see more of him than we have of most of the other guys, but they're so cute together. Former 'Bachelor' winner Catherine Lowe says she believes Clare Crawley and Dale Moss didn't communicate before 'The Bachelorette'

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="12217400" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="clare-crawley" source="Orion">Clare Crawley</keyword> said she was sexually abused by a Catholic priest when she was a child. </li><li>The "Bachelorette" star shared her story on "Red Table Talk: The Estefans," which aired Thursday. </li><li>Crawley said her parents sued the church, but they just moved the priest to another parish.</li></ul><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/facts-about-bachelorette-clare-crawley">"Bachelorette" star Clare Crawley</a> said she was sexually abused by a Catholic priest when she was a child. </p><p>Crawley shared her emotional story on the Facebook Watch series <a href="https://www.facebook.com/redtabletalkestefans/">"Red Table Talk: The Estefans,"</a> which aired Thursday. </p><p>"I believe I was right around 5 or 6 years old - when I was in first grade," she told Gloria Estefan, who hosts the series with her daughter Emily and niece Lili. "I grew up going to a Catholic school when I was a victim of a predator." </p><p>Crawley said that she was a "painfully shy" child who would rather "pee my pants instead of ask to go to the restroom." Her parents went to a Catholic priest at the school - who acted as a counselor to the students - for help. </p><p>"I don't think there was any counseling that was done," Crawley said. "It was one-on-one time to be a predator." </p><div type="image" title="Clare Crawley on Red Table Talk: The Estefans" height="1126" width="2000" msid="86666921" hostid="261"></div><p>Crawley said she had to learn very quickly to start speaking up at school. </p><p>"I knew enough to know that I didn't want to sit alone in a confessional with him anymore," she added. </p><p>Crawley didn't tell anyone in her family until three years later. When her parents found out, they sued the church. </p><p>"The church essentially said we will do whatever it takes to keep this quiet, we will move him out of the church," Crawley recalled. "But when the church said they had moved him out of the church, they had moved him to one church over. He did it to more children and the church allowed him - knowing he was a predator - to perpetuate what he was doing." </p><p>Crawley first revealed that she was a sexual abuse survivor on an Instagram post in July. </p><p>"As a child of sexual abuse, my young adult years were spent in unhealthy relationships feeling unworthy of the good ones," she wrote. "It was a vicious cycle, because the more I chose the wrong men who treated me poorly, the more I believed I wasn't good enough." </p><p>Crawley said <a href="https://www.insider.com/bachelorette-catherine-lowe-clare-crawley-2020-11">Dale Moss - who appeared with her</a> on the episode - helped give her the courage to share her story.  </p><div type="image" title="Clare Crawley and Dale Moss on &quot;Red Table Talk: The Estefans&quot;" height="1234" width="2202" msid="86666923" hostid="261"></div><p>"I remember sitting on the bed and telling my fiancé Dale, I want to share this, I'm ready to share this, but I'm scared," she recalled. "And now I thought, you know what, this is not my burden to carry anymore. What I'm going to carry is being a survivor."</p>

And I think that there's a need and a want to find love and interact with people and just be vulnerable," she continued, "and I think maybe they felt safe enough to open up and talk about it with me, which is great." </p><p>"But I also feel like those are real conversations," she added. "Those are real things that people face every day. "And I didn't know how to say that I needed things."</p><p>Smith added that he had been "very intentional and aggressive" with his therapy, and credited his sister with saving his life. </p><p>"The only thing that got me through that was her and she has no idea," he said. "I owe her everything." </p><p>Adams told Insider that Smith was "a completely different person" after he had opened up to her on the series. </p><p>"It was like a weight had been lifted off [of] his shoulders," she said. Crawley abruptly left the hit ABC reality dating competition after falling in love and later becoming engaged to contestant Dale Moss.</p><p>"In the back of my head, wondering if I was going to be someone's type was definitely a concern I had," Adams - who is African-American and Mexican - told Insider. "Just because Clare was the original Bachelorette and Clare and I are very different women. So yeah, it was definitely something of concern."</p><p>While Crawley became the first Latina "Bachelorette" in the show's history, Adams was the second Black woman and second Latina woman to star in "The Bachelorette."</p><p>But Adams said those thoughts disappeared once she began having conversations with the contestants. </p><p>"Once I talked to the guys, I don't think that was even a thing anymore," she said. Adams told Hall.</p><p>Hall revealed that he could "100% relate" to her experience, as he had gone to college in Lubbock, Texas, where <a href="https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/lubbockcitytexas,lubbockcountytexas/PST045219">80% of the population is white</a>. </p><p>"There weren't many Black people there," he said. "[I] remember those things like randomly walking down, next to my campus and being called the n-word. It happened to me all the time in college. And that's just not right."</p><p>The reality star admitted that it was a necessary conversation to have with cameras rolling, especially in terms of their courtship.</p><p>"That's a real conversation that two people generally would, and should, have if they're looking to find a relationship," she said of the onscreen moment with Hall. <ul class="summary-list"><li>On the most recent episode of "<keyword id="914894" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="The-Bachelorette">The Bachelorette</keyword>," Tayshia Adams and Ivan Hall had an emotional discussion about the events of this summer, including the protests related to George Floyd's death.</li><li>The "Bachelor" franchise usually shies away from current events, but this season's COVID-related delays made it impossible to pretend the show exists outside of reality.</li><li>For many viewers, the conversation was a welcome change — part of dating in the real world is discussing issues and making sure your priorities align.</li><li>Additionally, as Tayshia is the second Black lead ever, her conversation with Hall was one of the first times many fans were able to see themselves represented on screen.</li><li>The conversation, as well as the show's decision to finally let reality in, signals a new era for the "Bachelor" franchise.</li></ul><p>"<keyword id="274607" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="The-Bachelor">The Bachelor</keyword>" and its adjacent spin-offs claim to provide people with fairytale endings — and they do. At the end of almost every season, someone gets down on one knee and proposes marriage after knowing the other person for around two months. It's essentially the timeline of a Disney movie.</p><p>But that's not necessarily the bedrock of a stable relationship. While there are couples from "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette" who are still together, the overwhelming majority of winning couples have broken up. For "The Bachelor," just <em>one </em>of the leads is still with his original final pick (hi, Sean and Catherine) out of 24 seasons. "The Bachelorette's" stats aren't much better: Out of 16 seasons — and 17 leads — four women are still with the recipient of their final rose.</p><p>The idea that <a href="https://www.etonline.com/bachelorette-jojo-fletcher-jordan-rodgers-reveal-many-near-splits-how-they-stayed-strong-exclusive">their real relationships actually begin</a> after they're engaged and living off-camera is a common thread among "Bachelor" couples. But the franchise's insistence on keeping their leads and contestants inside this perfect bubble might finally be starting to waver, and that's a good thing.</p><h2>The contestants are finally able to speak about real issues</h2><p>After Clare Crawley departed midway through the current season with her fiancé Dale Moss, Tayshia Adams was brought in to "save" the season, and during the November 24 episode, she was part of one of the most emotional and honest conversations in the show's history.</p><p>Adams, who is Black, discussed issues with one of her suitors, 28-year-old aeronautical engineer Ivan Hall (who is also Black), that had never before been raised on the show. Hall explained his younger brother had fallen into addiction and been in prison for four years, and had even missed the birth of his daughter.</p><p>The discussion then shifted to current events — namely, the death of George Floyd, the national protests his death sparked, and police brutality towards Black Americans. Both Hall and Adams discussed the effects Floyd's death had on them, how they had both experienced racism in their hometowns and at college (both subtly and overtly, as Hall shared he had been called the N-word in college), and how they felt connected to each other through these shared experiences.</p><div type="image" title="tayshia ivan" height="1273" width="1697" msid="79499729" hostid="261"></div><p>This conversation about major issues in the real world — not "Bachelor" fantasy-land — was met with emotional reactions from Bachelor Nation.</p><h2>This summer, it became clear that the franchise needed to change</h2><p>The conversation between Tayshia and Ivan took place against the backdrop of the summer's events. People across the US and the world were forced to reckon with their own implicit biases and relationships with race, and "The Bachelor" was part of that reckoning. The show, over a combined 39 seasons of television, had only one Black lead before Adams: former "Bachelorette" star Rachel Lindsay.</p><div type="image" title="rachel lindsay" height="751" width="1000" msid="79499735" hostid="261"></div><p>Lindsay has spoken at length about how she hasn't felt protected by the franchise, and that she feels frequently put-upon to educate other members of Bachelor Nation simply because she was the only Black lead in the show's history. During an episode of her podcast, "Bachelor Happy Hour," Lindsay <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/life/a32814191/rachel-lindsay-becca-kufrin-racism-bachelor-podcast/">spent a significant amount of time and emotional labor</a> trying to explain racism to her white co-host Becca Kufrin. She also made it clear that if things didn't change within the franchise, she would distance herself.</p><p>Many former contestants and fans supported Lindsay, and a <a href="https://www.change.org/p/abc-a-campaign-for-anti-racist-casting-and-hiring-in-the-bachelor-franchise">petition to make the show more diverse</a> and explicitly anti-racist organized by the <a href="https://bachdiversity.com/">Bachelor Diversity Campaign</a> has over 163,000 signatures.</p><p>Even Chris Harrison, the longtime host and godfather of Bachelor Nation, admitted to Insider that the show can do better in terms of race.</p><div type="image" title="chris harrison tayshia" height="1392" width="1857" msid="79499737" hostid="261"></div><p>"At the end of the day, 'The Bachelor' and 'Bachelorette' have always been above love and relationships," the host <a href="https://www.insider.com/chris-harrison-bachelor-diversity-cast-producers-2020-10">told Insider's Anneta Konstantinides</a> in October 2020. "And the whole point is you want to see yourself represented. You want to see your love represented on screen and to not do that is a failure," he added. "And that's something we aim to be better at and do better at."</p><p>Insider also spoke to another member of Bachelor Nation, Mike Johnson, earlier in the year. Johnson was <a href="https://www.buzzfeed.com/ehisosifo1/mike-johnson-next-bachelor-the-bachelorette">one of the favorites to be named the Bachelor</a> instead of Peter Weber, which would've made him<em> </em>the first Black lead in "Bachelor" history. How did <em>he</em> think the show should become more diverse and representative of the "real world"? "By just doing it."</p><p>The show finally appears to be doing just that: Matt James will become the show's first Black lead in 2021.</p><h2>As well as discussing racial inequality, the conversation between Hall and Adams also reflected a more 'real-world' relationship</h2><p>The conversation between Hall and Adams could not have happened on any other season: There's never been an opportunity for two Black contestants to have this space. And that's including Lindsay's season — she's spoken about how she waited to have conversations about political and social issues until after the cameras were turned on, and multiple <a href="https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2018/08/205005/bachelor-show-contestants-politics-trump">former contestants during Nick Viall's season spoke to Refinery29</a> about how producers steered them away from speaking about politics. (ABC has yet to respond to Insider's request for comment.)</p><p>By failing to allow contestants to speak about their real, lived-in experiences or political beliefs, "The Bachelor" is doing its own contestants a disservice. Just look at Kufrin and her (<a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/how-alt-right-troll-garrett-yrigoyen-won-the-bachelorette">controversial</a>) final rose recipient Garrett Yrigoyen.</p><div type="image" title="becca garrett bachelorette" height="835" width="1114" msid="79499740" hostid="261"></div><p>The two <a href="https://www.eonline.com/news/1175650/the-bachelorettes-becca-kufrin-and-garrett-yrigoyen-break-up-after-2-years-together">called off their engagement this summer</a>, after it became clear that their opinions regarding police brutality, politics, and other issues were not compatible. Over the summer, Kufrin posted <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CA7-vmVhTbw/">pro-Black Lives Matter content</a> while Yrigoyen <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CBBmniwBkqo/">posted a "Thin Blue Line" graphic</a> supporting the police and <a href="https://i.redd.it/bnk73qh0eqw51.jpg">Instagram stories endorsing Trump</a>. While they both stated it was <a href="https://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/becca-kufrin-claps-back-at-idea-she-and-garrett-split-over-politics/">not due to one specific issue</a>, Kufrin became more vocally opinionated after the break-up, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CGQED75BMlc/">posting pro-Biden content</a>.</p><p>If Kufrin or Yrigoyen had been given all the information — or had engaged in these frank discussions before getting engaged — they might've saved themselves this heartbreak back in 2017.</p><h2>'Knowing where your partner stands on crucial political ideology is incredibly important, and should be a deal-breaker'</h2><p><a href="https://drmonicaoneal.com/">Relationship expert and clinical psychologist Monica O'Neal</a> told Insider she was "thrilled" to see the conversation on "The Bachelorette," and expects we'll see more of these types of conversations going forward. And that spells a more stable future for the relationships on the show.</p><p>"Knowing where your partner stands on crucial political ideology is incredibly important and should be a deal-breaker," she said. "The issue of racial justice and Black Lives Matter has become something that really is more of an indication of personal values and beliefs around equity and justice."</p><p>She added, "Those things are crucially important when it comes to raising children and thinking about the kind of ideology that you foster in your home. After a summer of turmoil, 'The Bachelorette' finally let reality in, and it points to a promising future for the show

"I found out what girls were when I was 15. I realized they don't like the fat kid. So I stopped eating. I started working out all the time, lost like 70 pounds, and had <keyword id="87651" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="bulimia">bulimia</keyword> for 10 years when I was in my 20s. It's hard to hide something for so long. I kept it from everybody." </p><p>Smith said the only person who had known about the disorder was his sister. </p><p>"She saved my life," he continued. "I'm finally at a place now where I feel safe and comfortable with the people that I live and work with. I care a great deal about this. It was like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders." </p><p>"It did take us a hot minute to get there," she continued. "Not having human interaction for quite some time does take a toll and I think there's a need and a want to find love and interact with people and just to be vulnerable. And I think maybe they felt safe enough to open up and talk about it with me, which is great." </p><p>During the season, the contestants have opened up about many tough issues, including drug addiction, absent parents and even the Black Lives Matter movement.</p><p>"Those are real conversations. Those are real things that people face every day," she added. "And the fact that we're openly talking about it, I think it's amazing...People are putting those walls down." </p><p>And Adams revealed that viewers can expect even more personal revelations from the men in Tuesday night's episode. </p><p>"It's a really good one," she said. Tayshia Adams says Ben Smith was the 'Bachelorette' contestant who surprised her the most after revealing his 15-year eating disorder

"But I was probably prejudiced against him too." </p><p>"I was hoping he'd be attracted to a different race," she added. "I knew that one of the reasons I was probably chosen was because I was Filipino. I counted myself out to be his fiancée because of what I assumed Sean liked." </p><p>"I thought I was there just to check a box, but I ended up with so much more. I became present with the process and as he started noticing me for who I really was, I allowed this experience to open myself up to the possibility of being fully loved and appreciated for all that I was." </p><p>"Don't count yourself out," she added. More than 160,000 people, including many of the show's biggest stars, signed a <a href="https://www.change.org/p/abc-a-campaign-for-anti-racism-in-the-bachelor-franchise">Change.org petition</a> demanding that a Black lead be cast in the next season.</p><p>Shortly thereafter, it was announced that <a href="https://www.insider.com/matt-james-bachelor-first-black-lead-reactions-2020-6">Matt James — who was initially cast in Clare Crawley's season of "The Bachelorette"</a> — would become the next star of "The Bachelor," becoming the first Black lead in the show's 18-year history. <a href="https://www.insider.com/tayshia-adams-bachelorette-everything-you-need-to-know-2020-11">Tayshia Adams, who took over</a> after Crawley left her season early, is now the second Black woman to become the "Bachelorette" in 16 seasons. She follows in the footsteps of Rachel Lindsay, who became "<keyword id="914894" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="The-Bachelorette">The Bachelorette</keyword>'s" first Black star in 2017.</p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/chris-harrison-behind-the-scenes-bachelor-bachelorette2020-10">Longtime "Bachelor" host Chris Harrison</a>, who is also an executive producer for the series,<a href="https://www.insider.com/chris-harrison-bachelor-diversity-cast-producers-2020-10"> told Insider that the franchise has been making changes</a> in both its casting process and behind the scenes. </p><div type="image" title="Chris Harrison" height="1340" width="2000" msid="79389825" hostid="261"></div>"There's obviously a lot of things you won't see behind the camera — hiring practices in crew, producers, [and] people being promoted," he said back in October. "A lot of steps that won't get as much limelight, but are as equally important."<p>But Harrison admitted that the series still had a lot of work to do.  </p><p>"At the end of the day, 'The Bachelor' and 'Bachelorette' have always been above love and relationships," he added. "You want to see your love represented on screen, and to not do that is a failure. And that's something we aim to be better at and do better at." </p><h2><div type="image" title="Sean Lowe &quot;The Bachelor&quot;" height="1333" width="1778" msid="79389827" hostid="261"></div>Lowe said she believes the producers are 'definitely more aware of the demands for a more diverse cast every season'</h2><p>While Catherine told Insider that she thinks "Bachelor" producers are "doing a good job of continuing to think about ways to diversify the series, it also starts with the women and men applying to be part of the process.</p><p>"I'm just hoping that now that there's a more diverse cast, I'm hoping that more diverse people apply to be on the show," she explained.</p><p>"There's so many people out there and being exposed to other kinds of love stories is really important for our society," Catherine added. "I think it's going in that direction and I'm excited." </p><h2>When it comes to their own post-show success, Lowe believes the couple's decision to stay out of the 'Bachelor' bubble has helped their relationship thrive</h2><p>While many "Bachelor" stars make the move to Los Angeles after appearing on the hit ABC series, Catherine moved to Dallas to be with Sean after he proposed and the couple remain there today.</p><p>And while they share plenty of their adventures on Instagram, you won't catch the couple appearing at every "Bachelor" wedding or spin-off. Catherine credits staying off the "Bachelor" grid to their relationship's success.</p><p>"A lot of the show's 'success stories' are like that," she said. "And that's why they've been successful because they're more normal and just kind of getting on with their lives."</p><p>"We still love the Bachelor Nation and all the people who have worked on the show, but if you ask any of the married people, or the people who've been together for a long time, I think that's kind of the case." </p><p>But that doesn't mean Catherine would stop her kids if they wanted to be on "The Bachelor" or "The Bachelorette" one day. </p><p>"Sean says no, but I'm like why not?" she said with a laugh. 'Bachelor' winner Catherine Lowe said she thought her husband Sean wouldn't be attracted to her because she's 'a different race'

<ul class="summary-list"><li>There will be two seasons of "<keyword id="914894" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="The-Bachelorette">The Bachelorette</keyword>" in 2021, in addition to "Bachelor in Paradise."</li><li>After two back-to-back seasons, the thought of three more "Bachelor" shows this year is exhausting.</li><li>How can the show expect to improve on its mistakes if <keyword id="6369596" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="abc">ABC</keyword> just doubles down without a break?</li></ul><p>Even the most dedicated fans of "<keyword id="274607" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="The-Bachelor">The Bachelor</keyword>" need a break from the show.</p><p>In the last 12 months, Bachelor Nation witnessed the end of Peter Weber's season (<a href="https://www.thecut.com/2020/04/bachelor-peter-weber-calls-out-madison-prewett-podcast-interview.html">disastrous</a>), <a href="https://www.insider.com/most-shocking-moments-bachelorette-2020-11">Clare Crawley quitting her season halfway through</a> to leave with Dale Moss, <a href="https://www.insider.com/bachelor-couples-still-together-2018-7">Tayshia Adams and Zac Clark finding love</a> (but no "After the Final Rose"), and - to top it off - <keyword id="255497" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Matt-James">Matt James</keyword>' season ending in host <keyword id="242810" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Chris-Harrison">Chris Harrison</keyword> stepping away and James, the first Black Bachelor, <a href="https://www.insider.com/bachelor-matt-james-rachael-kirkconnell-finale-2021-3">picking a woman</a> who had been <a href="https://www.insider.com/bachelor-rachael-kirkconnell-matt-james-complete-timeline">photographed at a plantation-themed party</a> in college. </p><p>Just writing it is exhausting.</p><p>With Harrison, who is the face of the franchise, out of commission, a pandemic that keeps the show from traveling, and loud cries for a complete re-haul, you might think that ABC and "The Bachelor" would take a beat, re-evaluate the show, its producers, format, and host, and disappear from TV screens for a while.</p><p>Instead, "The Bachelor" is doing the exact opposite. During Monday's finale, it was announced that <keyword id="10954195" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="katie-thurston">Katie Thurston</keyword> would be the next star of "The Bachelorette." Her season will air from May to July, which was the show's normal slot, pre-pandemic.</p><p>But that wasn't all. After the sixth season of "Paradise," which will air from August to September, there will be <em>another </em>season of "The Bachelorette," starring <keyword id="10954194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="michelle-young">Michelle Young</keyword>. This will air from October to December, the slot used last year due to the pandemic.</p><p>To understand why they may be doing this - and why it's a bad idea - we need to head back to March 2020.</p><h2>Peter Weber's season started a chain reaction, and we're still feeling its effects</h2><p>Weber, a fan-favorite from Hannah Brown's season of "The Bachelorette," turned out to be <a href="https://www.insider.com/bachelor-seasons-stars-ranked-2019-1">one of the worst leads in recent "Bachelor" history</a>. He was indecisive, immature, only listened to the person right in front of him, and ended up dating three women from his season - the winner, the runner-up, and the fifth-place contestant.</p><div type="image" title="Peter Weber Bachelor" height="1161" width="1549" msid="81578876" hostid="261"></div><p>He also had women competing on the show who did not seem in it for love. His season was filled with in-fighting, as well as a controversial contestant who was photographed wearing a "White Lives Matter" shirt with a Confederate flag - <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/tv/2020/02/16/bachelor-contestant-victoria-fuller-apologizes-white-lives-matter-controversy/4779005002/">she claimed it was about fish</a>.</p><p>During the "Women Tell All" episode during Weber's season, Rachel Lindsay, the franchise's first Black lead, was given a platform to <a href="https://variety.com/2020/tv/news/bachelor-recount-racist-hateful-messages-left-by-fans-this-has-to-stop-1203519399/">speak about the cyber bullying and online harassment</a> she experiences as a Black woman in Bachelor Nation. It was heartbreaking.</p><p>Shortly after, COVID-19 put "The Bachelorette" on hiatus - but that gave members of Bachelor Nation time to reflect on the season and stew for six months about the larger issues inside the show and its community.</p><h2>The Bachelor Diversity Campaign highlighted the systemic issues inside the show</h2><p>The death of George Floyd led members of the "Bachelor" community to reckon with the franchise's issues with diversity and race. The <a href="https://twitter.com/bachdiversity">Bachelor Diversity Campaign</a> (BDC) was created by fans and alumni of the show to push for change inside production, including more diverse producers and casting, better screening of contestants, and the first Black Bachelor in 25 years of the show.</p><p>The BDC created a petition pushing for a Black lead in 2021, which garnered thousands of signatures and encouraged the fan base to think more critically about the show and its place in culture. Rather than publicly address any of the issues behind the scenes, ABC picked Matt James to be the first Black Bachelor for season 25. He was the first lead in years to not have been on a "Bachelor" show before becoming the lead, and people like Lindsay posited that he was chosen as a "<a href="https://deadline.com/2020/06/rachel-lindsay-matt-james-bachelor-casting-knee-jerk-reaction-1202958198/">knee-jerk reaction</a>" to the franchise getting called out.</p><p>While this was happening, she was also pushing for more diversity behind the scenes, but was continually met with racist bullying and harassment online, which she detailed on her social media and podcast appearances. Most recently, <a href="https://www.etonline.com/rachel-lindsay-deletes-her-instagram-after-harassment-from-bachelor-nation-161328">she left Instagram for a few weeks</a> after getting vitriol from fans.</p><h2>There was only a week's break between Tayshia Adams' and Matt James' seasons, and his season was exhausting</h2><div type="image" title="Matt James &quot;The Bachelor&quot;" height="967" width="1290" msid="81578877" hostid="261"></div><p>There are usually four months - from September to January - between the end of "Bachelor in Paradise" and the beginning of a new season of "The Bachelor." But due to the pandemic pushing back production, Adams' season of "The Bachelorette" aired its finale on December 22 and fans had just a week to process it before diving into a "historic" season of "The Bachelor" on January 4.</p><p>The week turn-around was just too quick. Usually, fans have months to decompress, but with just a week in between, <a href="https://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/tv/ct-ent-bachelor-matt-james-diversifying-audience-0125-20210120-5qwzprxof5dxvdzuhhjlsqt4kq-story.html">viewership was down</a>, and it <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/tv-ratings-monday-march-15-2021">remained low the entire season.</a></p><p>"I needed a break after the [Adams] season, and this one started a week later. That's why I stopped watching," a co-worker told me.</p><p>That James' season was filled with <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/tv/2021/01/26/bachelor-recap-victoria-anna-matt-james-bullying-hits-unbearably-mean/6698342002/">bullying</a>, problematic (at best) and racist (at worst) contestants, <a href="https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2021/01/10277845/brittany-escort-the-bachelor-anna-sex-work">the shaming of sex workers</a>, and <a href="https://people.com/tv/the-bachelor-rachel-lindsay-comments-on-matt-james-dad-conversation/">stereotypes like the absentee Black father</a>, only added to the <a href="https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2021-03-12/the-bachelor-abc-disney-chris-harrison-matt-james-rachael-kirkconnell-rachel-lindsay">pain and frustration of BIPOC fans and contestants</a> alike. </p><h2>Instead of reflecting on what could be fixed, the show is doubling down on producing more content and superficial change</h2><div type="image" title="Chris Harrison" height="1161" width="1549" msid="81578878" hostid="261"></div><p>After the <a href="https://www.insider.com/bachelor-contestants-chris-harrison-franchise-racism-2021-2">now infamous interview between Harrison and Lindsay</a>, in which Harrison asked everyone to "show grace" to Rachael Kirkconnell, and repeatedly talked over Lindsay as she tried to explain what the issues were with Kirkconnell's past behavior, Harrison announced he was stepping back from the show and taking time to learn. This might not have happened if fans and members of Bachelor Nation themselves weren't at a breaking point with the franchise already.</p><p>He was replaced with Emmanuel Acho for "After the Final Rose," and then later by Adams and Kaitlyn Bristowe for "The Bachelorette." But there wasn't <em>actually </em>radio silence from Harrison. A few days after his departure, he appeared on "Good Morning America" <a href="https://t.co/WsbF7G2oZk?amp=1">with Michael Strahan</a>, who said he felt like he got "nothing more than a surface response on any of this" from Harrison.</p><p>Fans, for their part, also criticized Harrison for taking just a few days off to "listen and learn" before speaking on the morning show.</p><h2>'The Bachelor' franchise needs time off to truly reflect on its disastrous past year, and what came before it</h2><p>All this is to say, it's a good start to have Harrison take time off from the franchise. And Young is a great choice for "The Bachelorette," as the third Black lead in two years. But her season is coming after Thurston's (who is white) and as the sixth "Bachelor" show in 18 months, when there are normally four seasons in that timeframe. You have to wonder if ABC is once again trying to placate cries for diversity behind the camera by bringing in a Black lead immediately after a white one.</p><p>There have also <em>still been </em>no public, meaningful changes behind the scenes, as far as we know. The show has made no announcements highlighting what they're planning to do. ABC did not respond to Insider's request for comment.</p><p>Producers and casting directors are the people who shape seasons. They are the ones who choose what drama to highlight, which people to give good and bad edits to, who even appears on the season at all. Until the show is forced to reckon with its problems and improve its environment, no number of BIPOC leads or host changes will matter - and shoving content down fans' throats will not silence them.</p>

Fans need a break from 'The Bachelor.' ABC is giving them the exact opposite.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>"Bachelor" star <keyword id="255497" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Matt-James">Matt James</keyword> has been open about his Christian faith on the show, leading his contestants in prayer during the very first episode. </li><li><keyword id="10601999" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ivan-hall">Ivan Hall</keyword>, who appeared on <keyword id="9837039" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tayshia-adams">Tayshia Adams</keyword>' season of "<keyword id="914894" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="The-Bachelorette">The Bachelorette</keyword>," told Insider that it was good James did so early on because it "let the women know where he stands." </li><li>Adams — who is a practicing Christian — broke up with Hall after the aeronautical engineer revealed he was nonreligious during their off-camera fantasy suite date. </li><li>Hall told Insider he wished "Bachelor" fans could have seen their conversation because many people "are affected by interfaith relationships." </li></ul><p>"<a href="https://www.insider.com/matt-james-star-of-the-bachelor-raised-by-single-mom-2021-1">The Bachelor" star Matt James</a> has been open about his Christian faith on the show, even <a href="https://www.insider.com/matt-james-contestants-the-bachelor-2020-12">leading his contestants</a> in prayer during the very first episode. </p><p>And Ivan Hall - who was eliminated from <a href="https://www.insider.com/bachelorette-tayshia-adams-biracial-clare-crawley-2020-12">Tayshia Adams' season of "The Bachelorette"</a> after revealing he's nonreligious - told Insider that he believed it was a good move by James. </p><p>"At the end of the day it's really Matt's season and that's something that's important to Matt," Hall said. "So the fact that he brought that up early on, I think that's great. That's great to let the women know where he stands." </p><h2>After the limo entrances, James walked into <a href="https://www.insider.com/nemacolin-resort-where-bachelor-was-filmed-matt-james-photos-2021-1">the 'Bachelor' resort</a> and told the women he wanted to 'pray for everybody' </h2><div type="image" title="Matt James &quot;The Bachelor&quot;" height="1610" width="2146" msid="80290258" hostid="261"></div><p>When James offered to pray before getting to know more ladies, it was met with positive feedback and smiles from the contestants.</p><p>"Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for bringing us all together healthy," James began. "Give these women the courage to get through these next few months."</p><p>"You said that you work all things for the good of those who love you and are called according to your purpose, Father God, and I feel like that's why I'm here, and I feel like that's why these women are here Lord," he continued in part.</p><p>"That was so beautiful," one of the women said after James said Amen, while another yelled, "OK Reverend Matt!"</p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> </em><em><a href="https://www.insider.com/bachelorette-tayshia-adams-quarantine-helped-men-open-up-2020-12">Tayshia Adams thinks quarantine helped her 'Bachelorette' men become more vulnerable with her this season</a></em></p><p>James then explained to the women why prayer was an important part of his life. </p><p>"What you'll get to know about me is anytime I'm feeling nervous, I'm just constantly shooting up prayers just to put myself at ease," he admitted.</p><h2>Hall told Insider that he believes James' prayer will 'fuel some conversations about religion to happen sooner' </h2><div type="image" title="Matt James The Bachelor" height="1470" width="1960" msid="80290260" hostid="261"></div><p>Hall said he wished his bachelorette would've introduced her Christianity faith, and the fact that it was important to her, sooner during their season, which just wrapped last month.</p><p>"Hypothetically speaking, if Tayshia had done that same move, maybe it would have sparked that conversation about religion a little bit sooner," Hall added. </p><p>The topic of religion didn't come up for Adams and Hall <a href="https://www.insider.com/bachelorette-tayshia-adams-quarantine-helped-men-open-up-2020-12">until they had off-camera time</a> during the fantasy suite date late in the season. And, even then, Hall said the pair still didn't have enough time to discuss their religious differences. </p><p>"Tayshia and I didn't have that much time together. She had the least amount of time out of any Bachelorette ever," Hall said, hinting that Adams replaced <a href="https://www.insider.com/most-shocking-moments-bachelorette-2020-11">Clare Crawley who abruptly left the show</a> after finding love with contesntant, Dale Moss.</p><p>"That could be a conversation for a few days, or a couple weeks here and there, and questions can be answered and there can be a back and forth. We only really had one night, and probably like 45 minutes at most because we had to move on to other topics," he said, later adding that it led to confusion.</p><h2>While Adams is a practicing Christian, Hall identifies as nonreligious and agnostic </h2><div type="image" title="Tayshia Adams Ivan Hall" height="1500" width="2000" msid="80290262" hostid="261"></div><p>When Adams broke up with Hall during the rose ceremony after the fantasy suite dates, she brought up her faith. </p><p>"There are some things that kind of posed concern," Adams said. "I wish I could say that there were a lot of red flags prior to this week, but there haven't been. At the end of the day, religion is part of my morals and my beliefs."</p><p>The brief scene perplexed viewers, as the couple's religion conversation had been off-camera. "When people ask me questions like 'Is there God? What comes in the afterlife?' I just say, 'I don't know,' because I don't think anything's been proven to me yet to be true. And that's the way I look at it." </p><p>"One of the benefits of having that mindset is, going forward, I try to allow myself to be open-minded to change," he added. "If something ever proves itself to be true to me then I'll be 100% on board with that." </p><h2>Hall said he understands why Adams decided to send him home over their religious differences </h2><div type="image" title="Tayshia Adams Ivan Hall &quot;The Bachelorette&quot;" height="1335" width="2000" msid="80290264" hostid="261"></div><p>Still, Hall doesn't hold any hard feelings with Adams over making the best decision for her life and her heart.</p><p>"Going into that rose ceremony, I was confident in my relationship with Tayshia except for that one thing. I knew we had left that conversation open-ended," Hall said. "If she had given me the rose, she would've been open to the idea. Since she wanted to date somebody who is religious, she sent me home." </p><p>"I fully respect her decision to send me home because that's what she believes," he added. "And that's what a lot of people who are religious believe in. "And I'm sure there's a lot of people going through the same types of feelings that I've gone through in my life." </p><p>Hall hopes that as the "Bachelor" franchise continues to work to <a href="https://www.insider.com/chris-harrison-bachelor-diversity-cast-producers-2020-10">increase diversity on its shows</a>, those efforts will encompass religious diversity as well. </p><p>"Diversity doesn't just mean race to me," Hall said. "I do think religious diversity is an important part of that. To be able to get those nonreligious stories, or Jewish, or Muslim, or whatever else instead of just Christian, I think would add a lot of value and bring a lot more audience members in that maybe haven't tuned in as much, or maybe felt a little more alienated that their love stories weren't being told on TV." </p>
