It will have both, an automatic and a manual option, along with different models for petrol and CNG. In fact, the AMT gearbox will be making its debut in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> in Santro’s Magna and Sportz variants but unfortunately, won’t be an option if you opt for on any of the Asta or CNG variants. It’s actually going to be a pretty high tech for a budget car with a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system built in featuring Android Auto as well as Apple CarPlay, a reverse camera, defogger and segment-first rear AC vents. But President Yoon Suk-yeol, who took office in May, looks set to cancel the program, known as <keyword id="14520849" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="cvx" source="Orion">CVX</keyword>, in order to invest in weapons better suited to counter the threat posed by North Korea.<h2>The CVX carrier</h2><div type="image" title="South Korea Dokdo-class amphibious assault ship ROKS Marado" height="1335" width="2000" msid="93039594" hostid="261" sizebytes="268074"></div>South Korea's navy has been working toward achieving blue-water status since the early 2000s. Over the past two decades, it has transformed into a first-rate navy, acquiring advanced vessels like the <a href="https://www.naval-technology.com/projects/sejongthegreatclassd/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sejong the Great-class</a> destroyers, <a href="https://www.seaforces.org/marint/Republic-Korea-Navy/Submarine/Son-Won-il-class.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Son Won-il-class</a> submarines, and <a href="https://www.naval-technology.com/projects/dodko-class/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dokdo-class</a> amphibious assault ships.The CVX program, championed by Yoon's predecessor, Moon Jae-in, was to be the latest step in that transformation. The design includes two command islands, deck space for drone aircraft, a well deck for unmanned vessels, and 16 <a href="https://www.navalnews.com/event-news/madex-2021/2021/06/hanwha-defense-details-kvls-ii-development-at-madex-2021/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">vertical-launch missile cells</a>.Hyundai's carrier would have a ski-jump ramp, though building it with an angled flight deck and a catapult system may be possible.Daewoo Shipbuilding's <a href="https://www.navalnews.com/event-news/madex-2021/2021/06/madex-2021-dsme-unveils-its-cvx-light-aircraft-carrier-design/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">design</a> would be 862 feet long and displace about 45,000 tons. It would carry 12 F-35Bs on its deck and 16 more in its hangar, as well as several helicopters. They also argue it would be valuable in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/explainer-competing-claims-make-northeast-asian-sea-a-flashpoint-2019-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">other disputes</a> and if Seoul needed to protect its interests abroad, such as in the sea lanes vital to its trade and energy supplies.CVX's detractors mainly <a href="https://www.aspistrategist.org.au/south-korea-pushes-ahead-with-aircraft-carrier-only-its-admirals-want/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">argue</a> that its costs outweigh its potential uses, especially considering the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-north-koreas-and-south-koreas-navies-compare-2021-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">comparative weakness of North Korea's navy</a>. Building the CVX is expected to cost $2 billion, with another $45 million or so needed each year to maintain it.That price doesn't include the F-35Bs, the helicopters, and the potential unmanned vehicles, which could increase to overall cost to as much as $5 billion, or almost 11% of South Korea's <a href="https://www.janes.com/defence-news/news-detail/south-korea-finalises-usd4632-billion-defence-budget-for-2022" target="_blank" rel="noopener">entire defense budget for 2022</a>."That's a huge whack out of a very small military budget," Bruce Bennett, a senior defense analyst at the RAND Corporation think tank, told Insider. "What President Yoon is going to have to take a look at is what's his opportunity costs for building such a carrier? What other goods is he losing because he goes in that direction and builds it?"The cost estimate for the CVX program also only accounts for one carrier. "Having one carrier does not a carrier force make," Bennett said, noting that carriers need to spend months at a time in port for training and maintenance.If Yoon "really wants to have a viable carrier force of even one carrier at sea continuously, he's got to have two to three carriers," Bennett added.<h2>Competing priorities</h2><div type="image" title="South Korea military soldiers troops" height="1333" width="2000" msid="93039597" hostid="261" sizebytes="185460"></div>Meanwhile, the rest of South Korea's military is also pushing for other high-cost projects.South Korea's army has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/south-koreas-military-modernization-bigger-problem-than-north-korea-2021-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">extensive modernization needs</a>, while its navy also wants to pursue other major programs, including acquisition of more <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-south-koreas-new-submarine-launched-missile-sets-it-apart-2021-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dosan Ahn Changho-class</a> submarines capable of launching ballistic missiles, and three more modernized Sejong the Great-class destroyers. There is also talk of developing a <a href="https://asiatimes.com/2022/06/south-korea-has-nuclear-subs-firmly-in-its-sights/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">nuclear-powered submarine</a>.The "Kill Chain" and "Korean Massive Punishment and Retaliation" <a href="https://warontherocks.com/2021/02/south-korea-conventional-capabilities-and-the-future-of-the-korean-peninsula/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">strategies</a> require more <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-south-korea-test-missiles-amid-north-korean-launches-2022-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">investment in ballistic missiles</a> and aircraft, with South Korea's air force favoring the F-35A and the <a href="https://www.upi.com/Top_News/World-News/2022/07/19/KF-21-Boramae-test-flight-fighter-jet/5711658231872/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">KF-21</a>.The Korean Aerial Missile Defense strategy also requires more sophisticated missile interceptors. Seoul wants to build up its own <a href="https://www.defensenews.com/global/asia-pacific/2021/10/22/south-korea-seeks-to-develop-missile-defense-against-n-koreas-artillery-barrage/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">layered air-defense</a> and <a href="https://en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN20220223008600325" target="_blank" rel="noopener">missile-defense</a> systems, and during his campaign, Yoon <a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Spotlight/South-Korea-election/Yoon-s-pledge-to-boost-THAAD-missile-system-risks-China-reprisal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">indicated</a> that he wanted to deploy more US-made Terminal High Altitude Area Defense batteries.<div type="image" title="South Korea F-35" height="933" width="1400" msid="93039598" hostid="261" sizebytes="82046"></div>The case for those weapons seems stronger than that of CVX, as they are better suited to counter the most likely North Korean threats than an aircraft carrier, aligning them with Yoon's efforts to focus more attention and resources on the North.Officials in Yoon's administration have described a need to reevaluate defense priorities, which has been interpreted as meaning the CVX would be canceled. The <a href="https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2022/07/south-koreas-new-f-35a-purchase-may-kill-cvx-program/?utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=south-koreas-new-f-35a-purchase-may-kill-cvx-program" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recent approval</a> of preliminary plans to acquire 20 more F-35As is seen as a more concrete move away from the carrier.Even without CVX, South Korea's navy remains a potent force and will continue to evolve."They've gotten a lot of investment in their upper-end destroyers, their submarines have been built, and they now have SLBMs," Bennett said. "The Navy hasn't gotten the blue-water navy capability they want yet, but they are moving in that direction."

South Korea's new hardline on North Korea may mean the end of its plans to build its first aircraft carrier

In one of the most high-profile tumbles in recent years, the <keyword id="6379256" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="videocon-group" source="Orion">Videocon Group</keyword> chief <keyword id="15333" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="venugopal" source="Orion">Venugopal</keyword> N. <keyword id="18489" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dhoot" source="Orion">Dhoot</keyword>, 71, an ex-Forbes lister, went into ignominy after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested him this week in the alleged ICICI Bank loans fraud case, in connivance with bank's ex-honcho Chanda Kochhar and her businessman hubby <keyword id="6357110" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="deepak" source="Orion">Deepak</keyword> Kochhar. Though starting in a small way in Aurangabad, initial quick successes, certain right business decisions and quick wealth flowing in led to an 'intoxication' coupled with ambitions and greed, that led to the collapse of the Group, all in less than four decades. The paterfamilias, the venerable Nandlal Madhavlal Dhoot had a largely agriculture background, plus an Indian scooters dealership, and then he launched the modest consumer electronics company, <keyword id="6354248" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="videocon" source="Orion">Videocon</keyword> Industries Ltd. in 1984. Exploiting the new craze for televisions, washing machines and other domestic appliances infecting the Indian middle-class then, Videocon soon grew big to become a household entity with N. M. Dhoot's sons -- Venugopal, Rajkumar and Pradipkumar - obediently helping their father build the businesses. At that time, it was Venugopal - an engineer who trained in Japan for a year, who set his targets much higher than expected by his closest associates and advisors, going about strategic tie-ups, key collaborations, lucrative acquisitions or profitable mergers with Indian and foreign companies which fed the hungry Videocon Group. These included founding Videocon International Ltd. (VIL, 1986), and business deals with giants like Toshiba, Philips, Thompson, Daewoo and Kelvinator, which blew up the company into one of the few 'Indian MNCs', with a presence in several countries. As the Group grew in leaps and bounds, crushing many small players en route from the 1990s onwards, everything seemed hunky-dory till the mid-2000s, say people in the know. An ex-business associate - requesting anonymity - confided that even in the early-2000s, some well-wishers had voiced concerns at the 'starry rise' of the Group, which could probably end up in a 'meteoric fall' someday. "Venugopal felt he was at the top of the world and nothing could affect him... He nurtured bigger ambitions, turning himself from a business baron to an industrial tycoon... He forayed into uncharted waters like petroleum, telecom and satellite entertainment broadcasting, realty, et al," said the associate. More businesses implied more borrowings and the Group went about picking up huge finances from the banks, individually or as a consortium -- the former was said to be risky for individual banks and the latter was considered dangerous for the banking sector. Dhoot is even 'admired' for being adept at the 'art of managing banks', hobnobbing with top bankers, a fragrance of good public relations, skillfully impressing so many banks who virtually chased him to lend huge funds, at one point accumulating to around Rs 70,000-crore. "These loans were intended to finance the other virgin ventures of Videocon Group which proved hazardous in the long run... The company didn't pay sufficient attention to funds flow, and consequently got trapped in the vicious circle, like a dragon chasing its own tail," the associate explained. A former President of the Federation of Indian Exports Organisations (FIEO), a top global export body feels that certain moves by Dhoot were more like 'adventures' or 'gambles', with the hope that the Group's strong image would help him sail through the storms, but sadly, that did not happen. "We must keep in mind that in the past couple of decades, the Indian laws, banking rules, regulations, codes or norms, and attitude of the courts have drastically changed. Now, everything is visible on the system, with no scope for inhouse manipulations from the willing bankers or backdoor exit by the wily politicians," said the ex-top officer, preferring to remain in the shadows. The Videocon Group's first signs of cracking up came when it failed in the new avenues like petroleum and gas, telecom, realty, and DTH, where things "went beyond the imagination or control" of Dhoot, leading to several fire-fighting measures that did not stop the scalding. Meanwhile, as the Group's attention was diverted to nurturing its new sectors, the good old core businesses of consumer electronics and home appliances starved for funds and languished. Taking advantage of the sinking ship, other big sharks from the world quickly entered with low prices that virtually decimated Videocon and it was left holding huge banks' liabilities. In between was another loan expose from the ICICI Bank, which raised many questions of ethics and finally saw its ex-managing director and CEO Chanda Kochhar and her husband Deepak also cooling their heels in the CBI cells. All these problems snowballed and ultimately led to the insolvency processes, a series of cases before the NCLT, a proposed 'takeover' by another rising star on the Indian business horizon, and if it fails, a possible liquidation process of what was once the country's most glittering business empire.
