<ul><li>77 (35%) of the 221 newly-elected <keyword id="6354780" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karnataka">Karnataka</keyword> MLAs have declared criminal cases against themselves.</li><li>42 MLAs from the <keyword id="58687" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharatiya-Janata-Party">Bharatiya Janata Party</keyword> (<keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword>) have criminal backgrounds. </li><li>While 34% of the previous assembly (2013) had a criminal background the percentage was significantly lower in 2008 at 24%. </li></ul>Karnataka Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) analysed affidavits submitted by the newly-elected MLAs (Member of the Legislative Assembly) in the Karnataka assembly. The results of the analysis were hardly surprising - 77 (35%) of the 221 newly-elected MLAs have declared criminal cases against themselves. Of these, 54 MLAs have declared serious criminal cases against them, which could include anything from murder to kidnapping. While 34% of the previous assembly (2013) had a criminal background the percentage was significantly lower in 2008 at 24%. The elections in the southwestern Indian state of Karnataka this week has been fraught with high drama. The results of 222/224 seats were as follows - the BJP won 104 seats, the <keyword id="190679" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-National-Congress">Indian National Congress</keyword> bagged 78 seats and the <keyword id="123462" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Janata-Dal">Janata Dal</keyword> (Secular) won 37 seats. Needless to say, a battle ensued as to who would claim the throne but just today the BJP legislature party leader B S Yeddyurappa was sworn in as the chief minister. According to the ADR analysis, 42 of the 104 MLAs from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have criminal backgrounds, while 23 of the 78 MLAs from the <keyword id="1571" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress-party">Congress party</keyword> and 11 out of 37 Janata Dal (Secular) MLAs declared criminal cases against them in their affidavits. Other shocking but not-so-shocking revelations from this report include: Assets <ul><li>215 out of 221 MLAs declared assets of over Rs 1 crore. </li><li>15 MLAs from the three leading parties declared assets of more than Rs 100 crore.</li><li><keyword id="28100" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="MLA">MLA</keyword> N. Nagaraju declared the highest assets of over Rs 1,015 crore whereas D.K Shivakumar (Rs 640 crore) came in second and Suresh B.S. (Rs 460 crore) third - all three belong to the Congress Party.</li><li>SA Ramadas from Krishnaraja constituency in Mysuru is the poorest MLA with assets to the tune of just ₹39 lakh. </li></ul>Gender <ul><li>There are only seven women among the 222 newly elected MLAs.</li></ul>Education <ul><li>61% declared that they are graduates or above, 36% declared themselves as Class V-XII pass</li><li>One MLA has declared he is ‘literate’ while “one did not give his educational qualification in his affidavit."</li></ul>Age <ul><li>135 MLAs are between 41 and 60 years old</li><li>64 are between 61 and 60 years old</li><li>15 MLAs are between 25 and 40 years old </li><li>Three are above 80 years old.</li></ul>

Popular <keyword id="9018200" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kannada-actor-Puneeth-Rajkumar" source="Orion">Kannada actor Puneeth Rajkumar</keyword>, son of <keyword id="12416612" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kannada-cinema-legend-Rajkumar" source="Orion">Kannada cinema legend Rajkumar</keyword>, passed away at the age of 46 following a massive heart attack on Friday. Consequently, security has been beefed up across Karnataka. Former Prime Minister <keyword id="214964" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="H-D-Deve-Gowda" source="Orion">H.D. Deve Gowda</keyword>, Karnataka Congress President D.K. Shivakumar, and former Union minister S.M. Krishna expressed their condolences on the untimely death of Puneeth. According to family sources, Puneeth suffered a heart attack while working out at a gym. Immediately he was shifted to Vikram Hospital. Dr Ranganath Nayak stated that his condition was critical when he was brought to the hospital. But the efforts of doctors to revive him went in vain. Puneeth's health worsened on Thursday evening but he did not visit a doctor. He went to the gym in the morning and developed chest pain. He was taken to a private clinic where ECG was done. During check up, his condition worsened and he was rushed to Vikram Hospital, where he succumbed to cardiac arrest. Puneeth has donated his eyes. He is survived by wife Ashwini and daughters <keyword id="7713881" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vanditha" source="Orion">Vanditha</keyword> and Dhruthi. Security has been beefed up all across the state including state capital Bengaluru to manage the situation. The Kannada film industry has come to a grinding halt and all movie shows have been cancelled in the state. Bengaluru Police Commissioner Kamal Pant has reached the residence of Puneeth at Sadashivanagar. Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and Kannada actor Puneeth's elder brother Shivarajkumar are also expected to address the media shortly. Puneeth was born on March 17, 1975 and was fondly known as 'Appu'. He was also a singer, television presenter and producer. He acted in more than 29 films and has also appeared in many films as a child artiste. He won the National Film Award for Best Child Artiste for his role in 'Bettada Hoovu'. He made his debut in the Kannada film industry with the movie 'Appu' in 2002. Kannada film star Puneeth Rajkumar passes away, security beefed up across Karnataka

BANGALORE: In a major relief to Karnataka <keyword id="5269" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chief-Minister">chief minister</keyword> Siddaramaiah, who is facing dissension within the party, the ruling <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> is all set to win two of the three assembly byelections by establishing a huge lead against rival BJP candidates for which counting is on. 
 Byelections were held to <keyword id="2470630" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bellary-Rural">Bellary Rural</keyword>, Shikaripur in Shimoga and Chikkodi-Sadalga in Belgaum districts on August 21. Congress candidate N Y Gopalakrishna was ahead with 25,736 votes in the 12th round of counting over his BJP rival Obalesh in Bellary Rural, while the Congress is set to retain Chikkodi-Sadalga and former chief <keyword id="6356245" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="minister">minister</keyword> B S Yeddyurappa once again establishing his hold over Shikaripur with his son B Y Raghavendra leading in all rounds. The vacancies were caused by sitting MLAs B Sriramulu (Bellary Rural), Yeddyurappa (Shikaripur) and former minister Prakash B Hukkeri (Chikkodi-Saldalga) getting elected to the <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword>. 
 
Among the three constituencies, Siddaramaiah had taken Bellary Rural seriously and deputed energy minister D K Shivakumar to oversee the campaigning there. Aware that Shikaripur constituency was a difficult challenge to take on as Yeddyurappa has made it an impregnable fortress over the years, the Congress concentrated all its resources and mind share in Bellary Rural with Chikkodi-Sadalga seen as a cakewalk for the party. 
 
The victories in Bellary Rural and Chikkodi-Sadalga are expected to give an upper hand to Siddaramaiah, who is scheduled to expand his cabinet by filling four vacancies, besides getting his men to head the boards and corporations to be reconstituted in the next couple of days. The CM is under pressure from senior Congressmen seeking a berth in the cabinet along with KPCC president G Parameshwara eyeing the deputy CM's post. 
 Bellary has political significance for the state Congress as AICC president <keyword id="689" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sonia-Gandhi">Sonia Gandhi</keyword> won the Bellary Lok Sabha seat in 1999, which she gave up to retain Rai Bareli. The district had been the Congress stronghold until 2004, when the Reddy brothers gained control of it. 
 
Victory in Bellary Rural, one of the eight assembly constituencies in the district, is no small gain for the Congress, which is a divided house here. In this faction-ridden district unit, Shivakumar known for his organizing capabilities was put in charge to wrest the seat. 
 
BJP had been banking on Sriramulu to retain the seat and had also given in to his wish to field close aide and former government employee Obalesh. His sister J Shantha had decided not to recontest the Bellary Lok Sabha seat and and was hoping to bag the Bellary Rural ticket. The JD(S) did not field any candidate in these bypolls, instead it chose to support the Congress in Shikaripur and Bellary Rural.
