IMD issued an orange alert as it doesn’t expect the cyclone to cause much damage. Yet, it warned fishermen from venturing into the sea till June 13. Though the cyclone caused heavy rains across the Western Coast of India including Mumbai, Pune, Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, it might cause more damage to the already delayed monsoons in the area.  Moving to Gujarat The cyclone is moving close to Gujarat at a speed ranging from 75 km per hour to a maximum of 135 km. It is likely to hit Gujarat on June 12 night, said IMD. "The system currently is seen as a depression over the Southeast and East Central Arabian Sea and is centered at 11.2°N and 71°E, around 800 km South-Southwest of Mumbai," according to skymetweather.com. As per MeT officials, the Cyclone Vayu will head to the Saurashtra by June 12. The western parts of Saurashtra and Kutch region in Gujarat are likely to witness ‘heavy to very heavy rains’ between June 12 and June 14. Jamnagar, Somnath, Porbander, Dwarka and Nailiya in Kutch are likely to be impacted the most, and could even herald pre-monsoons rain across Gujarat. The cyclone might also bring light showers to cities, like Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Rajkot, Veraval and Bhuj on June 12 and June 13.

Chances of finding more survivors are looking bleak, an official said. Cyclone Tauktae sinks boat in the Arabian Sea — 26 dead and 49 still missing

New Delhi, June 2 (IANS) A week after a raging cyclone wreaked havoc in West Bengal, the country is now bracing to face another cyclone which is headed towards the coastline of Maharashtra and Gujarat. "Nisarga" currently lies as a depression 490 km from Mumbai, 280 km from Goa's capital city and 710 km from Surat district in Gujarat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the depression intensifed into a deep depression at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday. It is now slated to further turn into a cyclonic storm in 12 hours and then into a severe cyclonic storm in subsequent 12 hours. Low pressure, depression and deep depression are the first three levels used by the IMD to classify cyclones based on their intensity. It is likely to cross north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts between Harihareshwar town in Raigad district and Daman as a severe cyclonic storm on Wednesday. IMD's Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra has said that the severe cyclonic storm will have a wind speed of 90-105 kmph when it crosses the coast on June 3. According to Roxy Mathew Koll, a climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, it will be the first-ever cyclone in recorded history to hit the Maharashtra coast in June. Whereas, as per another researcher at the same institute, 'Nisarga' will be only the second cyclone in recorded history that will be hitting the Maharashtra coast in the pre-monsoon season i.e. April-June. "The one and only cyclone in the past that hit Maharashtra coast in the pre-monsoon season was May 1961 cyclone," Vineet Kumar said. The IMD Director General also said that the cyclonic storm will affect the coastal districts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, more than Gujarat and neighbouring states. "As per our predictions, Maharashtra coastal districts like Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Thane, Raigad, Mumbai and Palgarh will be more affected by it." The Central Water Commission has sounded flood alert for Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Thane, Mumbai, Palgarh and Nasik districts of Maharashtra, Daman district of union territory of Daman and Dui, Silvassa district of Dadar and Nagar Haveli and Valsad district of Gujarat. There could be inundation in low lying areas, townships, and city areas. Wind speed could also cause damage to trees, telephone, and electric poles, Mohapatra warned. Even then, it was the Bay of Bengal that witnessed one cyclone heading towards the coast of Tamil Nadu while another approached over the South China Sea. Some experts are predicting that the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fujiwhara_effect">Fujiwhara effect</a> might take place, which is when the vortices of two adjacent cyclones start to orbit each other. It’s even possible that the vortices may merge. Fishermen advised to steer clear The Indian Meteorological Department (<a href="http://www.imd.gov.in/alerts/20191030_al_1124.pdf">IMD</a>) predicts heavy rainfall over Lakshadweep, Kerala, coastal Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. It also expects the sea conditions in the Arabian Sea to remain anywhere between rough to high. Cyclone Kyarr, the most severe cyclone that the Arabian Sea has seen in the past 12 years, has nearly come and gone. But Cyclone Maha has put areas on high alert since yesterday. Fishing operations in the Lakshadweep area have been suspended and fishermen have been advised to stay away from east central Arabian Sea till November 4. According to IMD’s alert, thatched houses are in danger of having their rooftops blown off, power lines may get damaged, coastal crops might suffer and there’s a probability that roads might be flooded.

The Director General said that the severe cyclonic storm will have a wind speed of 90-105 kmph when it crosses the coast. "We are accessing it continuously. Central and state government agencies have been informed and are taking the steps," he added. Dr Sunitha Devi, scientist in-charge for cyclones, said that the depression is currently located about 340 km southwest of Goa's Panjim, and 850 km south-south-west of Gujarat's Surat. Maharashtra and Gujarat are on pre-cyclone alert as very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected in parts of the states on June 3 and June 4. Due to its influence, the east central Arabian Sea and south east Arabian Sea is currently rough. Heavy rainfall The cyclone is likely to cause heavy rainfall in the coastal districts of Gujarat. A storm surge of about 1-1.5 metre over the astronomical tide is likely to inundate the low-lying coastal areas of Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Porbandar, Junagarh, Diu, Gir Somnath, Amreli and Bhavnagar districts. The IMD has been issuing regular bulletins to the concerned authorities, said a Home Ministry statement. Preparatory measures The state government of Gujarat deployed National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) rescue teams to minimise the damage, if any. It is considering asking for another 10 NDRF teams from the central government. Overall, 35 teams will be made available across the coastal district. The NDRF teams, along with teams of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), are equipped with boats, tree-cutters, telecom equipment and others. The Border Security Force (BSF) is being deployed in Kutch, while the state is co-ordinating with the military for swift rescue and response efforts. "All possible measures are to be taken to avoid any human casualty and preparations be kept ready to restore any damage that may be caused to infrastructure. Rescue teams of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Army, Coast Guard and Border Security Force (BSF) are also in readiness. The Ministry of Home Affairs is in continuous touch with the state governments and the Central agencies concerned," an official statement said. Academic institutions closed The Union Home Ministry on Tuesday issued detailed advisories to Gujarat and the Union Territory of Diu, requesting them to take all precautionary measures to ensure that no human life is lost. The after effects of the deep depression formed over Lakshadweep in the Arabian Sea that intensified into a cyclonic storm (Tauktae) over the archipelago and adjoining southeast east central Arabian Sea moving northwards during the past six hours, has caused huge damage to the coastal areas in Kerala. Even though the depression is approximately around 290 km away from Kannur, on account of the heavy rains across the state, and with the sea turning rough, the state government has been forced to open numerous camps across the state to move people to safety. According to the India Meteorological Department Tauktae is very likely to intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours and expected to move north-north-westwards and reach near the Gujarat coast by May 18 morning. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has informed the preparedness of the state in facing any calamity arising out of the cyclonic storm. "Even though, Kerala is not in the predicted path of the <keyword id="6386783" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="CYCLONE">cyclone</keyword>, heavy rains, strong winds and strong sea gusts are expected in the State till May 16. We should exercise utmost caution in districts and adjoining districts where the Meteorological Department has issued a Red and Orange Alert," said Vijayan and appealed to all to cooperate with the authorities and move out to camps whenever told. Even though so far there has been no casualties reported, the rain and the rough sea has caused innumerable hardships to the people, who are already battling the Covid pandemic. The worst affected on account of the rough sea include the coastal hamlets in the state capital, parts of Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasargode. Starting Friday night, huge number of trees were uprooted and power supply disrupted for long hours on account of the high speed winds and heavy rain. In many places the supply was restored on Saturday, while in few places it's yet to be restored. With the state under a total lockdown from May 8, the only saving grace was the police did not have much work to man people on the roads. Indian ocean can witness many more super cyclones like Amphan in the coming years — and climate change is to blame

New Delhi, June 2 (IANS) A week after cyclone 'Amphan' wreaked havoc in West Bengal, the country is now bracing to face another cyclone which is headed towards the coastline of Maharashtra and Gujarat. 'Nisarga', which is currently brewing in the Arabian Sea, means nature and was termed by India's neighbouring country -- Bangladesh. The name was accorded in a list formulated by a group of countries. Bangladesh had also suggested 'Fani', which had made a landfall in Odisha on May 3, 2019. The extremely severe cyclone had caused extensive damage. The naming of cyclones in the Indian Ocean began in 2000 and a formula was agreed in 2004. The next few cyclones will be named Gati (named by India), Nivar (Iran), Burevi (Maldives), Tauktae (Myanmar) and Yaas (Oman). Tropical cyclones are named to help the scientific community and disaster managers to identify cyclones, create awareness and effectively disseminate warnings to wider audiences. The World Meteorological Organisation and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific had, at its twenty-seventh Session held in 2000, agreed to assign names to the tropical cyclones in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea. Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Thailand were part of the panel. Later in 2018 Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Yemen were added to the list. Cyclones around the world are named by Regional Specialised Meteorological Centres and Tropical Cyclone Warning Centres. There are a total of six RSMCs and five TCWCs, including the India Meteorological Department. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has been mandated with the duty to name cyclones that develop over the North Indian ocean, including Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, by following a standard procedure. As suggested by the 13 countries, IMD released a list of cyclone names in April, 2020. The names like Arnab, Nisarga, Aag, Vyom, Azar, Prabhanjan, Tej, Gati, Lulu among 160 other names were listed. The new list included the last name from the previous list 'Amphan' as it remained unused at the time of release. After 'Amphan', 'Nisarga' name was picked up for the ensuing cyclone. According to the IMD, the names should be gender, politics, religion and culture neutral, not hurt sentiments, not be offensive, be short, easy to pronounce. Meanwhile, a deep depression has formed over the Arabian Sea and is inching closer to the coastal districts of Maharashtra and Gujarat. The deep depression is now slated to further turn into a cyclonic storm in 12 hours and then into a severe cyclonic storm in subsequent 12 hours.
