Cyclone Nivar makes landfall, weakens into severe cyclonic storm near Puducherry

New Delhi, <keyword id="10313645" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="cyclone-nivar">Cyclone Nivar</keyword> is currently hovering over southwest <keyword id="55869" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bay-of-Bengal">Bay of Bengal</keyword> and is likely to intensify further into a "very severe" cyclonic <keyword id="43950" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="storm">storm</keyword> by 5.30 p.m., the MHA said on Wednesday. The cyclone is very likely to move west northwestwards and cross Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mamallapuram around Puducherry during Wednesday midnight and early hours on Thursday as a very severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 120-130 kmph gusting to 145 kmph. Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) shared the information on Wednesday based on 11.30 a.m. report of <keyword id="10161038" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-cyclone-warning-division">the Cyclone Warning Division</keyword> of the India Meteorology Department (IMD). As per the latest report, the cyclone moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 11 kmph during past six hours and lay centred at 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday over <keyword id="10310481" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="southwest-bay">southwest Bay</keyword> of Bengal about 240 km east-southeast of Cuddalore, about 250 km east southeast of Puducherry and 300 km south southeast of Chennai. "It is very likely to intensify further into a very severe cyclonic storm during next six hours," the IMD release said around 11.30 a.m. Fairly widespread rainfall and thunderstorm activity is very likely over coastal and north interior Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema during Wednesday and Thursday, and southeast Telangana during Thursday. Extremely isolated heavy rainfall activity is also very likely over coastal and north interior Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Wednesday. Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Myladuthirai, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Kallakurchi, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Puducherry and Karaikal districts are to be affected. The cyclone will affect Nellore and Chittoor districts of Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday and move over Rayalaseema and southeast Telangana on Thursday. Gale wind speed reaching 105-115 kmph gusting to 130 kmph is prevailing over Southwest Bay of Bengal. It would further increase becoming 120-130 kmph gusting to 145 kmph during Wednesday afternoon to early hours on Thursday. Squally wind speed reaching 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph is prevailing along and off Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining South Andhra Pradesh coast and over Gulf of Mannar. The wind will gradually increase and become gale wind speed reaching 120-130 kmph gusting to 145 kmph along and off coastal districts of north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry (Nagapattinam, Karaikal, Myladuthurai, Cuddalore, Puducherry, Villupuram and Chengalpattu) and 80-90 gusting to 100 kmph very likely over Tiruvarur, Kanchipuram, Chennai, Tiruvallur districts during Wednesday afternoon to early Thursday hours. Tidal wave of about 1-1.5m height above the astronomical tide is very likely to inundate the low-lying areas of north coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry near the place of landfall. Damage expected over Nagapattinam, Myladuthurai, Cuddalore, Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts of Tamil Nadu and Karaikal and Puducherry. Potential threat from flying objects. The cyclone will lead to disruption of railways, overhead powerlines and signalling systems. There are expectations of widespread damage to standing crops, plantations and orchards. "Small boats, country crafts may get detached from moorings. Visibility may be severely affected," warns IMD, suggesting "total suspension of fishing operations and mobilise evacuation from coastal areas." It was advised to move coastal hutment dwellers to safer places. After Cyclone Nivar, another storm likely to affect Tamil Nadu: IMD

On its way the cyclone uprooted several trees and power lines in Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore, Marakkanam and in Puducherry. Power supply in several areas was disrupted. The concerned administration was removing the fallen trees. In Puducherry also the power supply was disrupted. Puducherry Chief Minister V.Narayanasamy told a news channel that power supply will be restored in a phased manner on Thursday itself. He said, a lot of trees have fallen due to the cyclone and rain in continuing. Narayanasamy said low lying areas were inundated and work was on to drain the water. Fallen trees were being removed. "Power supply was disrupted and it will be soon restored in a phased manner in 12 hours", he said. As regards the cyclone damage to lives and property, Narayanasamy said the assessment will be made and by this afternoon, an estimate of damage will be known. He said 80 relief camps have been set up in Puducherry. Camps have also been set up in Karaikal. Narayanasamy said, "By Gods grace people of Puducherry escaped the fury of Nivar." He also inspected the cyclone damaged areas and urged the people to stay indoors and fishermen not to venture into the seas. In Tamil Nadu's Villupuram district, police said the fallen trees have been removed to ease the flow of traffic. Similarly, the officials of power utility were also on the job to restore power supply wherever it got disrupted due to the cyclone. At Marakkanam near Puducherry, several power poles fell down and the fishermen community requested the Tamil Nadu government to restore the power lines at the earliest. According to the weather department the cyclone lays centered over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry about 25km north of Puducherry with wind blowing at a speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph. In the suburbs of Tamil Nadu capital Chennai, water got logged due to rains affecting the residents as well as traffic flow. Nivar will move northwest wards and weaken further into a cyclonic storm during the next three hours, the IMD said. The cyclone began its landfall on Wednesday night about 10.30 p.m. after moving at a speed of 16 kmph for six hours. In an early morning tweet, Puducherry's Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi said: "Good #MorningNutrition. Puducherry has faced the Cyclone, collectively and resolutely. Making us a stronger and a more experienced team." Even after landfall, the cyclone was likely to maintain its intensity for about six hours and weaken gradually. The sea along the coast was very rough with huge waves were hitting the shores. IMD said, "Under its influence rainfall at most/many places with heavy to very heavy fall at a few places with isolated extremely heavy falls are likely to occur over Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Tirupattur, Vellore districts of Tamil Nadu and Chittoor, Kurnool, Prakasam and Cuddappa districts of Andhra Pradesh. Twenty five teams from National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed on the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh.

All shops and business establishments were directed to be closed from 9 pm on Tuesday to 6 am on Thursday. She said in a release that the IMD had warned of possible impact of cyclone 'Nivar' along the coastline of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Puducherry is expected to be 'severely impacted' by the cyclone and there was a <keyword id="2358452" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="grave-danger">grave danger</keyword> to life, health and safety of the public because of the cyclone predicted. Cyclone Nivar: Prohibitory orders clamped in Puducherry to restrict movement of people

<keyword id="12864" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chennai">Chennai</keyword>, Nov 25 Gusty winds and rains lashed parts of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday leaving several areas inundated and authorities have housed over one lakh people in shelters as severe cyclone '<keyword id="10317634" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="nivar">Nivar</keyword>' hurtled towards the coast. 'Nivar would intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm and it is likely to cross the coast between Tamil Nadu and Puducherry before dawn on Thursday, the India Meteorological Department said. With rains drenching parts of the state, authorities have evacuated over one lakh people and housed them in shelters besides disconnecting power supply in vulnerable areas as a precautionary measure. While <keyword id="4430550" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chief-Minister-K-Palaniswami">Chief Minister K Palaniswami</keyword> declared Thursday a public holiday for 13 districts, a <keyword id="6473907" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="government-order">government order</keyword> included three more districts considering the safety of people in view of the cyclone. Revenue Minister <keyword id="6435760" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="r-b-udhayakumar">R B Udhayakumar</keyword> said 1,03,291 people including children have been housed in 1,000 relief centres. Food, water and all other essentials including masks to help prevent coronavirus have been made available to them in the relief centres, he said. A senior official said subsequently, the number has increased to 1,21,152. According to the government, these people have been housed in shelters at Ariyalur, Chengelpet, Chennai, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Perambalur, Ranipet, Thanjavur, Tiruvannamalai, Tiruvarur, and Villupuram districts. As a precautionary measure, electricity distribution was stopped to consumers in several regions falling under such districts and especially areas that have overhead power transmission lines witnessed power cut since noon. Civic authorities meanwhile removed banners and hoardings in several districts including Chennai and Vellore expecting squally winds. Police personnel placed barricades in arterial roads and important intersections in coastal districts to bar movement of vehicles and the government appealed to the people to stay indoors. Chennai airport authorities said Aircraft operations at the airport will remain suspended from 7pm of November 25 till 7am of November 26. The decision was taken considering the safety aspect of passengers and the severity of the approaching cyclone, they said. Southern Railway said eight trains including the Danapur - KSR Bengaluru Special were diverted skipping Chennai and 10 trains including the Chennai Central-Coimbatore Special were cancelled. The Chennai Metro Rail, which operated minimum services, said operations would end by 8 pm and services would resume tomorrow depending on the weather. In its latest bulletin, the IMD said Nivar would cross over betwen Karaikal and Mamallapuram "during the midnight of November 25 and early hours of 26 November." The storm, 250 km off Chennai and 190 km and 180 km from Puducherry and Cuddalore respectively, is very likely to move northwestwards and cross coasts as a "very severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 120-130 kmph gusting to 145 kmph." Under the influence of the cyclone, coastal and north interior Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kariakal regions are likely to receive rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy showers at a few places and extremely heavy rains at isolated places. South coastal Andhra Pradesh is also likely to witness showers at most places today. Rainfall is expected to continue in many places in these regions on Thursday too with heavy rainfall at some places. Surplus water was released from Chembarambakkam lake, one of the key drinking water sources to the city, since it almost neared its full level, the government said. PWD officials said 1000 cusecs was released from the lake as the level stood at 22 feet of the total 24 feet. Chennai and its suburbs, which received heavy overnight rains, continued to witness intermittent showers coupled with strong winds with low-lying areas getting inundated and water entering houses in such localities. The government said it has nominated IAS official V Arun Roy to oversee relief activities in Chengelpet district. Civic body officials said stagnant water was pumped out by deploying heavy duty motors and fallen trees were being removed immediately. The authorities said the rescheduled Intermediate and IPC examination would be held on December 9, and the final (old and new) examination shall be held on December 11 for the above-stated centres only at the same time. The institute also said that the previously issued admit cards for CA November 2020 examination will remain valid for the rescheduled date. It also emphasised that other than these centres, all exams will be conducted as scheduled. ICAI reschedules CA November 2020 exam in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry due to the Nivar cyclone

New Delhi, June 2 (IANS) A week after cyclone 'Amphan' wreaked havoc in West Bengal, the country is now bracing to face another cyclone which is headed towards the coastline of Maharashtra and Gujarat. 'Nisarga', which is currently brewing in the Arabian Sea, means nature and was termed by India's neighbouring country -- Bangladesh. The name was accorded in a list formulated by a group of countries. Bangladesh had also suggested 'Fani', which had made a landfall in Odisha on May 3, 2019. The extremely severe cyclone had caused extensive damage. The naming of cyclones in the Indian Ocean began in 2000 and a formula was agreed in 2004. The next few cyclones will be named Gati (named by India), Nivar (Iran), Burevi (Maldives), Tauktae (Myanmar) and Yaas (Oman). Tropical cyclones are named to help the scientific community and disaster managers to identify cyclones, create awareness and effectively disseminate warnings to wider audiences. The World Meteorological Organisation and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific had, at its twenty-seventh Session held in 2000, agreed to assign names to the tropical cyclones in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea. Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Thailand were part of the panel. Later in 2018 Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Yemen were added to the list. Cyclones around the world are named by Regional Specialised Meteorological Centres and Tropical Cyclone Warning Centres. There are a total of six RSMCs and five TCWCs, including the India Meteorological Department. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has been mandated with the duty to name cyclones that develop over the North Indian ocean, including Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, by following a standard procedure. As suggested by the 13 countries, IMD released a list of cyclone names in April, 2020. The names like Arnab, Nisarga, Aag, Vyom, Azar, Prabhanjan, Tej, Gati, Lulu among 160 other names were listed. The new list included the last name from the previous list 'Amphan' as it remained unused at the time of release. After 'Amphan', 'Nisarga' name was picked up for the ensuing cyclone. According to the IMD, the names should be gender, politics, religion and culture neutral, not hurt sentiments, not be offensive, be short, easy to pronounce. Meanwhile, a deep depression has formed over the Arabian Sea and is inching closer to the coastal districts of Maharashtra and Gujarat. The deep depression is now slated to further turn into a cyclonic storm in 12 hours and then into a severe cyclonic storm in subsequent 12 hours. It is likely to cross north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts between Harihareshwar town in Maharashtra's Raigad district and Daman as a severe cyclonic storm on the afternoon of June 3. --IANS aka/dpb

Chennai, Feb 1 () Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami on Monday welcomed several announcements made in the union budget by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman but sought a review of the cess regime in the interest of states. DMK president M K Stalin lashed out at the Centre, saying it has offered an "illusionary lollipop" to the people of poll-bound Tamil Nadu. Palaniswami said the budget has many welcome provisions, especially beneficial to the state. In a statement, he appreciated announcements like the allocation of Rs 35,000 crore for COVID-19 vaccination drive. The implementation of 3,500 km of national highway work in Tamil Nadu will boost the state's economy. He also gave the thumbs up for the port development scheme, proposals in transport sector such as purchase of 20,000 new buses and scholarship for Adi Dravida students. The chief minister requested the Centre to enhance the allocation for Tamil Nadu to fight the pandemic and also sought funds for the development of small fishing harbours in and two textile parks in the state. On levying of cess on petroleum products, Palaniswami said the state government had already flagged the issue of decreasing share of states' excise duty on petrol and diesel. And the increase in the cess today would "affect the financial condition of states, including Tamil Nadu," he said, adding the earlier mechanism should continue. In the budget, Sitharaman announced an agricultural infra cess of Rs 2.5 per litre on petrol and Rs 4 on a litre of diesel. Stalin, also Leader of the Opposition in state assembly, alleged the Centre had 'ignored' Tamil Nadu for the last six years and had given an impression in this budgetary exercise that it was implementing mega schemes for the state. "Like showing a mirage to a thirsty cow, the Central government has given an illusionary lollipop to the people of Tamil Nadu with an eye on polls," he said in a statement. He hinted there was no firm commitment on proposals, such as second phase of Metro Rail and 3,500 km of highway work and said the Centre had not paid heed to Palaniswami's earlier pleas for assistance in the wake of cyclones Nivar and Burevi. He questioned the Centre's announcement on implementing the Salem-Chennai highway corridor, saying the BJP seemed to say it was against farmers' welfare even in an election year in the state. While there was no announcement on lowering fuel prices, the levy of agri cess would only result in further increase in their rates, he added. There was no proposal for direct financial assistance to people who were suffering due to the Covid-triggered unemployment, Stalin said. Referring to Sitharaman reading a couplet from Tamil classic Thirukkural that talks about the features of a good government which creates wealth and ensures financial prudence, he wondered why she had not taken into account the one on the need of a king who has to be compassionate and deliver a rule of justice. NDA constituent PMK said the budget has "somewhat met expectations" about the Centre coming up with new schemes and announcements to give a fillip to various sectors that were suffering due to reasons including the covid pandemic. While proposals in the farm sector such as those on minimum support price would allay fears of farmers, there was no reduction in income tax, PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss said in a statement. Various infrastructure related initiatives will boost the growth, he added. MDMK founder Vaiko, a Rajya Sabha member, expressed 'disappointment' over the budget, saying it "showed no signs of" rebooting the economy. He opposed disinvestment of select PSUs, saying it would pave the way for public sector going into the hands of the private players. He also flayed the announcement on implementing the Salem-Chennai eight lane green corridor despite "public resistance" and said certain proposals in highways and rail sector had been done with an eye on the assembly polls in the state, likely in April or May. AMMK founder and independent MLA TTV Dhinakaran said the budget had "some joy and lot of concerns." While proposals such as covering one crore more beneficiaries under the Ujjwala scheme was welcome, "it is not proper" to have announced that the Salem-Chennai corridor will be implemented "this year itself," he added.
