Mumbai Airport shuts operations from 11am to 2pm on Monday due to high alert on Cyclone Tauktae

Pune, Jun 3 () Several low-lying areas in Maharashtra's Pune remained inundated due to rains brought in by cyclone 'Nisarga' since Tuesday night, officials said on Wednesday. Incidents of trees falling due to gusty winds have also been reported at some places in the city. The cyclone made landfall in coastal Raigad district, several kilometres away from here, on Wednesday afternoon. Earlier in the day, the IMD predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in ghat areas in and around Pune district with squally and gutsy winds. Parts of Maval and Mulshi tehsils are likely to be affected due to the cyclonic condition, it said. A senior official from district disaster management cell said that sporadic incidents like trees felling and damage to houses and power disruptions were reported from some places. "Teams of district disaster management cell, revenue, police have been stationed in the areas where the effect of cyclone is likely to be expected in these tehsils," he said. In Pune, heavy rains left several low-lying areas marooned. "The fire brigade, the PMC's disaster management team are kept on alert to tackle the situation," said Shekhar Gaikwad, the PMC Commissioner. Meanwhile, at least two flights that were supposed to land in Pune from Delhi and Hyderabad were diverted to Surat and Hyderabad, respectively. A Pune-Delhi flight was cancelled. SPK NSK NSK

Cyclone: Rains cause water-logging in Pune

New Delhi, June 2 (IANS) A week after a raging cyclone wreaked havoc in West Bengal, the country is now bracing to face another cyclone which is headed towards the coastline of Maharashtra and Gujarat. "Nisarga" currently lies as a depression 490 km from Mumbai, 280 km from Goa's capital city and 710 km from Surat district in Gujarat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the depression intensifed into a deep depression at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday. It is now slated to further turn into a cyclonic storm in 12 hours and then into a severe cyclonic storm in subsequent 12 hours. Low pressure, depression and deep depression are the first three levels used by the IMD to classify cyclones based on their intensity. It is likely to cross north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts between Harihareshwar town in Raigad district and Daman as a severe cyclonic storm on Wednesday. IMD's Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra has said that the severe cyclonic storm will have a wind speed of 90-105 kmph when it crosses the coast on June 3. According to Roxy Mathew Koll, a climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, it will be the first-ever cyclone in recorded history to hit the Maharashtra coast in June. Whereas, as per another researcher at the same institute, 'Nisarga' will be only the second cyclone in recorded history that will be hitting the Maharashtra coast in the pre-monsoon season i.e. April-June. "The one and only cyclone in the past that hit Maharashtra coast in the pre-monsoon season was May 1961 cyclone," Vineet Kumar said. The IMD Director General also said that the cyclonic storm will affect the coastal districts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, more than Gujarat and neighbouring states. "As per our predictions, Maharashtra coastal districts like Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Thane, Raigad, Mumbai and Palgarh will be more affected by it." The Central Water Commission has sounded flood alert for Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Thane, Mumbai, Palgarh and Nasik districts of Maharashtra, Daman district of union territory of Daman and Dui, Silvassa district of Dadar and Nagar Haveli and Valsad district of Gujarat. There could be inundation in low lying areas, townships, and city areas. Wind speed could also cause damage to trees, telephone, and electric poles, Mohapatra warned. It will then amplify into a severe cyclonic storm by evening or night of June 3 and make landfall. The Director General said that the severe cyclonic storm will have a wind speed of 90-105 kmph when it crosses the coast. "We are accessing it continuously. Central and state government agencies have been informed and are taking the steps," he added. Dr Sunitha Devi, scientist in-charge for cyclones, said that the depression is currently located about 340 km southwest of Goa's Panjim, and 850 km south-south-west of Gujarat's Surat. Maharashtra and Gujarat are on pre-cyclone alert as very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected in parts of the states on June 3 and June 4. Maharashtra will be most affected by Cyclone 'Nisarga', warns IMD

Gandhinagar, June 3 (IANS) The Gujarat government on Wednesday said that over 50,000 people living in low-lying vulnerable areas in south Gujarat were shifted to safer places as a precautionary measure against cyclone Nisarga. Pankaj Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue) told the media: "We have shifted more than 50,000 people living in coastal areas of south Gujarat. Special measures are being taken in Valsad and Navsari districts as the cyclone is expected to make an impact there. The administration is taking all precautions regarding Covid-19 at shelter houses." "We have also ensured that no power cuts occur at Covid-19 hospitals in these areas during the severe cyclone. All fishermen in these areas have been asked to return from the sea. People associated with prawn cultivation and salt pans have been shifted to safer places." The officer said: "In coordination with the district administrations, proper security and safety measures have been taken in chemical industries situated in and surrounding Vapi and Surat. The district administrations have issued instructions and accordingly, most industrial units in Vapi will remain shut on Wednesday." The district administration had 236 large hoardings pulled down in Surat, Valsad and other cities in south Gujarat, following predictions about the cyclone. Moreover, 125 high masts too have been pulled down as a precaution. "More than 250 pregnant women in vulnerable areas have been moved to safer places and more than 250 ambulances put on stand-by. Around 170 medical emergency teams have been deployed to tackle the situation in south Gujarat," Kumar added. Nisarga is likely to hit northern Maharashtra and southern Gujarat on or after June 3 afternoon with winds gushing up to 100-110 km per hour. The state has set up 140 shelters and other accommodations to put up evacuated people who were living in kutcha houses and other dwellings in coastal areas of Surat, Navsari, Valsad, and Bharuch. As many as 13 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and 6 State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams will be available for deployment in the state. New Delhi, June 3 (IANS) The landfall process of Cyclone 'Nisarga' has begun and will continue for three hours, the India Meteorological Department said on Wednesday. The right side of the cyclone's wall cloud passed through coastal Maharashtra, mainly covering the Riagad district. "The centre of the cyclone is very close to the Maharashtra coast. The landfall process has started and it will be completed in three hours," said IMD. The north-east sector of the eye of the cyclone is currently entering the land. The severe cyclone will cross Maharashtra coast, close to Alibag in the next three hours. "The cyclone will gradually enter into Mumbai and Thane district during the next three hours," stated IMD in its 12 p.m. bulletin. The cyclone is currently whirling with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph, gusting to 120 kilometres per hour 40 km away from Alibagh, 95 km from Mumbai and 325 km from Surat. The weather bureau has sounded red alert for at least seven coastal districts of Maharashtra, while several districts along Gujarat's coast are also expecting heavy rainfall. It will make landfall as a 'severe cyclonic storm' with a wind speed of 100-110 kmh gusting to 120 kmh. The cyclonic storm is currently located 280 km west-southwest of Panjim (Goa), 430km south-southwest of Mumbai (Maharashtra) and 640 km south-southwest of Surat (Gujarat). Dr Sunita Devi, India Meteorological Department's in-charge of cyclones, said, "The cyclone will further intensify into a severe cyclonic storm in the next 12 hours." Cyclone 'Nisarga' to make landfall near Alibag in M'rashtra

New Delhi, June 1 (IANS) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday said that the depression in the Arabian Sea is slated to further intensify into a cyclonic storm 'Nisarga' and cross north Maharashtra and Gujarat coasts between Harihareshwar in Raigard district and Daman on June 3. According to IMD's scientist Ananda Kumar Das, the depression is located about 370 kilometres southwest of Goa's Panjim, 690 kilometres south-southwest of Mumbai and 920 kilometres south-south-west of Gujarat's Surat. "It is very likely to move nearly northwards initially till June 2 morning and then recurve north-northeastwards and cross north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts between Harihareshwar (Raigad, Maharashtra) and Daman during evening or night of June 3," Das stated. Harihareshwar town is over 200 kilometres from both Mumbai and Pune, and is over 360 kms from Daman. The well-marked low-pressure area over the south-east and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep area had concentrated into a depression in the early hours on Monday morning. A low pressure area and a depression are the first two levels on the IMD's eight-category scale used to classify cyclones based on their intensity. The depression is likely to intensify into a deep depression by Monday evening. It will further become furious and turn into a cyclonic storm in the wee hours of the morning on June 2 and then into a severe cyclonic storm by evening or night of June 3. When it becomes a severe cyclonic storm, it will have a wind speed of 105-115, gusting to 125 kilometre per hour at 5.30 p.m. on June 3. According to the IMD, it again will weaken into a cyclonic storm with wind speed of 60-70, gusting to 80 kilometre per hour at 5.30 p.m. on June 4. IMD's cyclone track shows that Nisarga will cross very close to the Mumbai coast while entering the land. Maharashtra and Gujarat are on pre-cyclone alert as very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected in parts of the states on June 3 and June 4.  Moving to Gujarat The cyclone is moving close to Gujarat at a speed ranging from 75 km per hour to a maximum of 135 km. It is likely to hit Gujarat on June 12 night, said IMD. "The system currently is seen as a depression over the Southeast and East Central Arabian Sea and is centered at 11.2°N and 71°E, around 800 km South-Southwest of Mumbai," according to skymetweather.com. As per MeT officials, the Cyclone Vayu will head to the Saurashtra by June 12. The western parts of Saurashtra and Kutch region in Gujarat are likely to witness ‘heavy to very heavy rains’ between June 12 and June 14. Jamnagar, Somnath, Porbander, Dwarka and Nailiya in Kutch are likely to be impacted the most, and could even herald pre-monsoons rain across Gujarat. The cyclone might also bring light showers to cities, like Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Rajkot, Veraval and Bhuj on June 12 and June 13.

The sea level around <keyword id="21718" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Asia">Asia</keyword> has increased faster than the global average, with coastal area loss and shoreline retreat. The sea level extremes that previously occurred once in 100 years could happen once every six to nine years by 2050, and every year by 2100 globally, says Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology Scientist Swapna Panickal. Talking to IANS exclusively about findings of the biggest update of the state of knowledge on climate science of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (<keyword id="6941656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IPCC">IPCC</keyword>), a <keyword id="6355833" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="united-nations">United Nations</keyword> organisation, published on Monday with its impact on India, she said the <keyword id="12350" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Ocean">Indian Ocean</keyword> is warming at a higher rate than the global oceans. "Fifty per cent of the sea level rise is contributed by thermal expansion. Hence the sea level over the Indian Ocean region is also rising. The global mean sea level is rising at a rate of around 3.7 millimeter per year that is estimated between 2006 and 2018. "At 1.5 degrees, the sea temperature is expected to increase by one degree. So, in accordance with that, the global sea level and Indian Ocean sea level is also projected to rise at a similar rate." According to her, the South and Southeast Asian monsoon has weakened in the second half of the 20th century (high confidence). "The dominant cause of the observed decrease of South and Southeast Asian monsoon precipitation since the mid-20th century is <keyword id="11821943" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="anthropogenic-aerosol">anthropogenic aerosol</keyword> forcing. Both annual and summer monsoon precipitation will increase during the 21st century, with enhanced inter-annual variability (medium confidence)," Panickal told IANS in an interview. Climate scientists say the window is short but it can be mobilised by political will and ambition increase. "It finds that averaged over the next 20 years, global temperature is expected to reach or exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius of warming. It uses a set of five emissions scenarios to explore the impact of a broader range of greenhouse gases, land uses, and air pollutants." With 7,517 km of coastline, India will face significant threats from rising seas. Across six port cities -- Chennai, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Surat and Visakhapatnam -- 28.6 million people will be exposed to coastal flooding if sea levels rise 50 cm, according to one study.
