Thursday, June 15: <keyword id="17578676" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="cyclone-biparjoy" source="Orion">Cyclone Biparjoy</keyword> is ready to touch down over India's west coast today. The Very Severe Cyclonic Storm is expected to make landfall near Gujarat’s Jakhau Port by Thursday evening, and gradually lose steam as it continues to move inland — all while triggering potentially catastrophic torrents of rain in the region. Post-landfall, Biparjoy is expected to continue its northeastward movement until it eventually fizzles out over Rajasthan. But even during its gradual deintensification from a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm to a low-pressure area, the system will carry on dumping an ocean-worth of rain over the desert state. According to the India Meteorological Department (<keyword id="6366970" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="imd" source="Orion">IMD</keyword>), the southwestern parts of Rajasthan will be in for heavy to very heavy (64.5 mm-224.5 mm) and even extremely heavy downpours (more than 224.5 mm) this Friday and Saturday (June 16-17). The intense precipitation will slowly spill into southeast Rajasthan by Saturday. And while not as intense, some light or moderate showers may also be observed in most parts of the state. In fact, some experts reckon some parts of western and northwestern India may end up accumulating more than the average June rainfall within the next two days! Therefore, it is advisable for the regional residents to keep an umbrella handy this weekend, even if they do not live in areas expected to beat the brunt of the cyclone’s impact. Moreover, squalls winds reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph are likely over South Rajasthan from Friday noon to evening, followed by winds at 35-45 kmph, gusting to 55 kmph till Saturday midnight. Given these predictions, the IMD has issued a yellow watch (meaning be updated) over Rajasthan for today, but this will quickly escalate. On Friday, the West Rajasthan subdivision will be placed under a red warning — the highest level of warning that cautions residents to take necessary action against the hazardous weather. Thereafter, the red warning will also spread to East Rajasthan on Saturday. After that, both subdivisions will be downgraded to an orange alert (meaning be prepared) for Sunday before deintensifying back into yellow for Monday. In particular, the following districts within the state will remain on orange alert and red warning in the coming days: Saturday, June 17: Pali and Jalore on red warning; Jaisalmer, Sirohi and Barmer on orange alert Sunday, June 18: Pali and Jalore on red warning; Ajmer, Bhilwara, Rajsamand, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Sirohi and Barmer on orange alert Monday, June 19: Jaipur, Tonk, Sawai Madhopur, Ajmer, Pali and Udaipur on orange alert Further, as East India reels under searing heatwaves, Biparjoy's rainy and windy shenanigans will induce a distinct chill in the west. IMD forecasts that daytime temperatures in Northwest India will likely fall by 2-4°C over the next five days. As the cyclone gradually deintensifies, the frightening conditions will eventually lull out in a few days. But while the tumultuous times persist, it is imperative that you take the necessary steps to protect yourself against any potential danger from the weather behemoth.

Gandhinagar, June 3 (IANS) The Gujarat government on Wednesday said that over 50,000 people living in low-lying vulnerable areas in south Gujarat were shifted to safer places as a precautionary measure against cyclone Nisarga. Pankaj Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue) told the media: "We have shifted more than 50,000 people living in coastal areas of south Gujarat. Special measures are being taken in Valsad and Navsari districts as the cyclone is expected to make an impact there. The administration is taking all precautions regarding Covid-19 at shelter houses." "We have also ensured that no power cuts occur at Covid-19 hospitals in these areas during the severe cyclone. All fishermen in these areas have been asked to return from the sea. People associated with prawn cultivation and salt pans have been shifted to safer places." The officer said: "In coordination with the district administrations, proper security and safety measures have been taken in chemical industries situated in and surrounding Vapi and Surat. The district administrations have issued instructions and accordingly, most industrial units in Vapi will remain shut on Wednesday." The district administration had 236 large hoardings pulled down in Surat, Valsad and other cities in south Gujarat, following predictions about the cyclone. Moreover, 125 high masts too have been pulled down as a precaution. "More than 250 pregnant women in vulnerable areas have been moved to safer places and more than 250 ambulances put on stand-by. Around 170 medical emergency teams have been deployed to tackle the situation in south Gujarat," Kumar added. Nisarga is likely to hit northern Maharashtra and southern Gujarat on or after June 3 afternoon with winds gushing up to 100-110 km per hour. The state has set up 140 shelters and other accommodations to put up evacuated people who were living in kutcha houses and other dwellings in coastal areas of Surat, Navsari, Valsad, and Bharuch. As many as 13 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and 6 State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams will be available for deployment in the state. Two NDRF teams have been deployed in Valsad and one each in Navsari, Bharuch, Surat, Anand, Kheda, Gir-Somnath, Amreli and Bhavnagar. --IANS amc/tsb

Cyclone Nisarga: More than 50K evacuated in Gujarat

New Delhi, June 1 (IANS) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday said that the depression in the Arabian Sea is slated to further intensify into a cyclonic storm 'Nisarga' and cross north Maharashtra and Gujarat coasts between Harihareshwar in Raigard district and Daman on June 3. According to IMD's scientist Ananda Kumar Das, the depression is located about 370 kilometres southwest of Goa's Panjim, 690 kilometres south-southwest of Mumbai and 920 kilometres south-south-west of Gujarat's Surat. "It is very likely to move nearly northwards initially till June 2 morning and then recurve north-northeastwards and cross north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts between Harihareshwar (Raigad, Maharashtra) and Daman during evening or night of June 3," Das stated. Harihareshwar town is over 200 kilometres from both Mumbai and Pune, and is over 360 kms from Daman. The well-marked low-pressure area over the south-east and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep area had concentrated into a depression in the early hours on Monday morning. A low pressure area and a depression are the first two levels on the IMD's eight-category scale used to classify cyclones based on their intensity. The depression is likely to intensify into a deep depression by Monday evening. It will further become furious and turn into a cyclonic storm in the wee hours of the morning on June 2 and then into a severe cyclonic storm by evening or night of June 3. When it becomes a severe cyclonic storm, it will have a wind speed of 105-115, gusting to 125 kilometre per hour at 5.30 p.m. on June 3. According to the IMD, it again will weaken into a cyclonic storm with wind speed of 60-70, gusting to 80 kilometre per hour at 5.30 p.m. on June 4. IMD's cyclone track shows that Nisarga will cross very close to the Mumbai coast while entering the land. Maharashtra and Gujarat are on pre-cyclone alert as very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected in parts of the states on June 3 and June 4. IMD issued an orange alert as it doesn’t expect the cyclone to cause much damage. Yet, it warned fishermen from venturing into the sea till June 13. Though the cyclone caused heavy rains across the Western Coast of India including Mumbai, Pune, Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, it might cause more damage to the already delayed monsoons in the area. "The system currently is seen as a depression over the Southeast and East Central Arabian Sea and is centered at 11.2°N and 71°E, around 800 km South-Southwest of Mumbai," according to skymetweather.com. As per MeT officials, the Cyclone Vayu will head to the Saurashtra by June 12. The western parts of Saurashtra and Kutch region in Gujarat are likely to witness ‘heavy to very heavy rains’ between June 12 and June 14. Jamnagar, Somnath, Porbander, Dwarka and Nailiya in Kutch are likely to be impacted the most, and could even herald pre-monsoons rain across Gujarat. The cyclone might also bring light showers to cities, like Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Rajkot, Veraval and Bhuj on June 12 and June 13.

Heavy rainfall The cyclone is likely to cause heavy rainfall in the coastal districts of Gujarat. A storm surge of about 1-1.5 metre over the astronomical tide is likely to inundate the low-lying coastal areas of Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Porbandar, Junagarh, Diu, Gir Somnath, Amreli and Bhavnagar districts. The IMD has been issuing regular bulletins to the concerned authorities, said a Home Ministry statement. Preparatory measures The state government of Gujarat deployed National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) rescue teams to minimise the damage, if any. It is considering asking for another 10 NDRF teams from the central government. Overall, 35 teams will be made available across the coastal district. The NDRF teams, along with teams of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), are equipped with boats, tree-cutters, telecom equipment and others. The Border Security Force (BSF) is being deployed in Kutch, while the state is co-ordinating with the military for swift rescue and response efforts. "All possible measures are to be taken to avoid any human casualty and preparations be kept ready to restore any damage that may be caused to infrastructure. Rescue teams of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Army, Coast Guard and Border Security Force (BSF) are also in readiness. The Ministry of Home Affairs is in continuous touch with the state governments and the Central agencies concerned," an official statement said. Academic institutions closed The Union Home Ministry on Tuesday issued detailed advisories to Gujarat and the Union Territory of Diu, requesting them to take all precautionary measures to ensure that no human life is lost. The after effects of the deep depression formed over Lakshadweep in the Arabian Sea that intensified into a cyclonic storm (Tauktae) over the archipelago and adjoining southeast east central Arabian Sea moving northwards during the past six hours, has caused huge damage to the coastal areas in Kerala. Even though the depression is approximately around 290 km away from Kannur, on account of the heavy rains across the state, and with the sea turning rough, the state government has been forced to open numerous camps across the state to move people to safety. According to the India Meteorological Department Tauktae is very likely to intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours and expected to move north-north-westwards and reach near the Gujarat coast by May 18 morning. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has informed the preparedness of the state in facing any calamity arising out of the cyclonic storm. "Even though, Kerala is not in the predicted path of the <keyword id="6386783" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="CYCLONE">cyclone</keyword>, heavy rains, strong winds and strong sea gusts are expected in the State till May 16. We should exercise utmost caution in districts and adjoining districts where the Meteorological Department has issued a Red and Orange Alert," said Vijayan and appealed to all to cooperate with the authorities and move out to camps whenever told. Even though so far there has been no casualties reported, the rain and the rough sea has caused innumerable hardships to the people, who are already battling the Covid pandemic. The worst affected on account of the rough sea include the coastal hamlets in the state capital, parts of Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasargode. Starting Friday night, huge number of trees were uprooted and power supply disrupted for long hours on account of the high speed winds and heavy rain. In many places the supply was restored on Saturday, while in few places it's yet to be restored. With the state under a total lockdown from May 8, the only saving grace was the police did not have much work to man people on the roads. <ul><li>A special bus having a water purification system onboard has reached <keyword id="6357961" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="odisha">Odisha</keyword> to help cyclone affected people drink clean water. </li><li>The bus has the capacity to purify 40,000 litres of water in a day and can clean 2000 litre water in an hour </li><li>A similar bus was used to help the flood-affected Kerala.</li></ul>A special bus with a water purification system onboard with the capacity to purify 40,000 litres of water in a day, reached Odisha on Tuesday to those affected by <keyword id="7561057" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="cyclone-fani">cyclone Fani</keyword>. It will be used to clean any sort of contaminated water including dirty water from silt.

 The 40- feet- long “mobile water purification bus” started from the coastal town of Bhavnagar in <keyword id="6354766" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat">Gujarat</keyword>. It was indigenously developed by the Council of Science and Industrial Research. The bus contained an RO desalination and ultrafiltration plant. It also has a TFC membrane filtration that filters viruses and bacteria from the water. A similar bus was used to help the flood-affected Kerala. Cyclone Fani has been the strongest cyclone to hit India in 43 years. As many as 800,000 people were reportedly evacuated just before the cyclone made landfall in the eastern coast of India. In fact, <keyword id="50863" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bhubaneswar">Bhubaneswar</keyword>, the capital of Odisha lost over one million trees and 64 lives because of the deadly cyclone that came at a speed of 165-200km on May 2. However, there were no major casualties.

The <keyword id="6355100" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Navy">Indian Navy</keyword> has rescued 146 people on board a barge that went adrift in the Arabia Sea near Mumbai hours before <keyword id="11237626" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="cyclone-tauktae">Cyclone Tauktae</keyword> made landfall on the Gujarat coast, an official said on Tuesday. The <keyword id="42407" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Navy">Navy</keyword> on Tuesday morning also deployed the <keyword id="692931" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="P-8I">P-8I</keyword> long-range, multimission maritime patrol aircraft to join the search and rescue operations, the official said. "The Search and Rescue (<keyword id="173697" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SAR">SAR</keyword>) operations continued throughout the night and a total of 146 persons from Barge P305 have been rescued till 6 am on Tuesday, 111 by INS Kochi and INS Kolkata, 17 by Offshore Support Vessel (OSV) Greatship Ahilya and 18 by OSV Ocean Energy whilst operating in extremely challenging sea conditions," the official said. The barge 'Gal Constructor' with 137 persons on board has run aground about 48 nautical miles north of Colaba Point. An Emergency Towing Vessel 'Water Lily', two support vessels and CGS Samrat are in the vicinity for rendering assistance and evacuation of crew, a Navy spokesperson said. "INS Talwar is proceeding to assist another oil rig Sagar Bhushan with 101 personnel on board and an accommodation barge SS-3 with 196 personnel on board, both of which are adrift and presently located about 50 NM South East of Pipavav Port," the spokesperson said in a statement. "These ongoing rescue efforts have been augmented today morning by an Indian Naval P8I surveillance aircraft. Navy helicopters will also be deployed for SAR based on weather conditions. The SAR efforts will continue through the day with more naval assets ready to augment the ongoing operations," he said. The Navy had on Monday deployed three frontline warships after receiving messages to rescue 410 people on board two barges off the Mumbai coast. The ships deployed to extend assistance to the two barges were INS Kolkata, INS Kochi and INS Talwar. "On receipt of a request for assistance for barge 'P305' adrift off Heera oil fields in Bombay high area with 273 personnel onboard, INS Kochi was swiftly sailed on Monday with a despatch for search and rescue assistance," the Navy officer said. The oil fields are around 70 km southwest of Mumbai.
