Devastating pictures show how Cyclone Nisarga wreaked havoc in Alibaug, Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra

Pune, Jun 5 () Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Friday visited the villages in Pune district that were affected by cyclone 'Nisarga', and took stock of the damage caused by it. Pawar visited villages in Maval, Khed, Junnar tehsils along with Pune District Collector Naval Kishore Ram and directed the district administration to expedite the process of assessing the losses. The cyclone had made landfall near Alibaug in coastal Raigad district on Wednesday afternoon. It caused destruction in Raigad and Palghar districts. Gusty winds and heavy rains, triggered by the cyclone, also lashed parts of Pune district and claimed two lives. Pawar, who is Pune guardian minister, handed over a relief cheque to the kin of Manjabai Navale and her son Narayan, who died after a wall of their house in Khed tehsil collapsed during the storm caused by the cyclone on Wednesday. (Updating with latest weather report) Mumbai, Jun 3 () Severe cyclonic storm 'Nisarga' hit Maharashtra coast near Alibaug in Raigad district with a wind speed upto 120 kmph, but weakened into a cyclonic storm in the evening, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday. IMD's regional centre in Mumbai said the "severe cyclonic storm" crossed Maharashtra close to south of Alibaug with a maximum sustained speed of 100-110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph between 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm. "The system weakened into a cyclonic storm and lay centered at 16.30 hrs near lat 19.0 deg N and Long 73.7 deg E (Pune District) over interior Maharashtra about 100 km east north east of Alibaug, 90 km east of Mumbai (Colaba) and 50 km north northwest of Pune," it said in the statement. Earlier in the evening, an IMD official had said that the cyclone was moving north-east and was likely to affect Nashik, Dhule and Nandurbar in north Maharashtra apart from north-west part of Pune district. The coastal district of Ratnagiri reported 38 mm rainfall since 8.30 am on Wednesday, the IMD bulletin said. Colaba and Santacruz weather stations in Mumbai reported 46 mm and 22 mm rainfall during the same period, the statement said. Colaba and Santacruz stations reported maximum wind speeds of 50 kmph and 58 kmph, respectively, the IMD said. The department has predicted that it is very likely that Palghar will receive "heavy rain" (64.5-115.5 mm) at isolated places on Thursday. It was also "very likely" that Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, which also came under the influence of the cyclone as did Palghar, will receive "light to moderate rains" (2.5 mm to 64.4 mm) on Thursday. Nashik, predicted to be hit by the cyclone, is very likely to receive "heavy rain at isolated places" on Thursday, while Pune may see "light to moderate rain", the IMD said. "Gale wind, speed reaching 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph, is prevailing over eastcentral Arabian sea and off north Maharashtra coast (Raigad, Mumbai and adjoining Thane), 60-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph along and off Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Palghar and remaining areas of Thane," the statement said. 'Nisarga' weakened into cyclonic storm, moved towards Pune:IMD

Mumbai, June 3 (IANS) Mumbai looked set to escape the fury of Cyclone Nisarga which made a thumping wet landfall at Shriwardhan-Dive Agar in Maharashtra's Raigad on Wedesday afternoon, officials indicated. As per the latest India Meteorological Department bulletin, the cyclone which was expected to move towards Mumbai-Thane-Palghar, has apparently veered off to the east and moving towards Pune. "Nisarga lay centred over coastal Maharashtra, close to east-southeast of Alibaug, 75 kms south-east of Mumbai (Colaba) and 65 kms west of Pune. Current intensity (near center) 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph," said the IMD. From the changed direction, the cyclone is likely to head towards Nashik, Jalgaon and then onto Madhya Pradesh, officials said, even as Nisarga seemed to have missed the state capital by a whisker. "The eye of the storm is around 60 km away, it has hit Raigad district at a speed of over 100 kmph. Now, it is proceedings towards Uran," said Ratnagiri Collector Nidhi Choudhari soon after the landfall. However, barring three persons sustaining minor injuries when a tin roof blew off in Santacruz, there are no reports of any casualties so far. The collateral damage include scores of uprooted trees, several vehicles getting crushed in Mumbai and other parts of the Konkan, electric or power poles getting knocked down or roofs blowing away as people remained crouched indoors. Several hours before the landfall, Nisarga had already announced its impending arrival with heavy rains or showers in the entire coastal region - Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg - accompanied by strong gales of upto 60-70 km per hour speed since Wednesday morning. As a precautionary measure, over 13,000 people were evacuated in Raigad, some 2,000 in Mumbai and some more in Ratnagiri, Thane and Palghar, mostly from low-lying or risk-prone areas, and those living in 'kuchha' structures. Big and small trees were uprooted and crashed in south Mumbai's Colaba and Churchgate crushing at least two vehicles, while heavy waves lashed the jetties at Gateway of India, Bhaucha Dhakka, and popular beaches at Girgaum Chowpatty, Dadar, Juhu, Versova, Madh, Marve, Gorai on the city's west coast. At least 10 crew members stranded aboard a merchant ship - which was tossed in the waves and ran aground near Mirkawada fishing village in Ratnagiri - were safely rescued by local fishermen and Indian Coast Guard. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, along with other ministers and officials, continuously monitored the unfolding cyclonic situation while Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar called up all coastal District Collectors and sought ground reports from them. Rescue teams of NDRF and SDRF, besides army, navy, air force, coast guard, police, fire brigade, along with expert divers were on standby at various points in Mumbai to handle any flood like situation. Maharashtra Fishermen's Association President Damodar Tandel said that many fishing villages on the entire coastal belt have suffered huge damages due to the storm. "As per the latest information, most of our fishing boats were moored safely since the past couple of days, but the real damage will be known only after the stormy weather recedes. There are no reports of any casualties or missing fisherfolk," Tandel told IANS. The IMD has already declared a Red Alert for Raigad, Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Nashik, Dhule and Nandurbar - which is the expected path of Cyclone Nisarga on its land odyssey. Due to overnight rains, several low-lying and coastal areas of Mumbai and Thane, besides other districts experience inundation, but there were no disruptions as most people kept off roads in their homes. Following a runway excursion by a FedEx cargo aircraft on the Mumbai International Airport Ltd.'s secondary runway, and owing to inclement weather conditions, the airport suspended all flight from 2.30-6 p.m. Several long-distance trains on the Central Railway and Western Railway had been rescheduled to avoid the cyclone. As per the latest India Meteorological Department bulletin, the cyclone which was expected to move towards Mumbai-Thane-Palghar, has apparently veered off to the east and moving towards Pune. "Nisarga lay centred over coastal Maharashtra, close to east-southeast of Alibaug, 75 kms south-east of Mumbai (Colaba) and 65 kms west of Pune. Current intensity (near centre) 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph," said the IMD. From the changed direction, the cyclone is likely to head towards Nashik, Jalgaon and then onto Madhya Pradesh, officials said, even as Nisarga seemed to have missed Mumbai by a whisker. However, Raigad and Mumbai suffered collateral damage as the cyclone whirled past at speeds of over 100 kmph. In Mumbai, three persons sustained minor injuries when some construction stones fell on the tin roof of their slum in Santacruz, and four others were injured when pieces of a roof crashed on them in Walkeshwar. There were around 196 incidents of trees or branch crashes and at least two taxis getting crushed under them, 9 incidents of minor house or wall crashes and and 29 incidents of short-circuits all over the city, but no fatalities, said the Disaster Control of BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The BMC shifted around 18,890 people from risk-prone coastal areas to 35 temporary shelters, while Raigad authorities had moved around 13,000 to safety from the Nisarga fury, with similar action taken in Thane and Palghar for over 200 persons. Raigad also witnessed scores of uprooted trees, including coconut and palm plantations, a large number of electric poles or power lines getting knocked down and scores of roofs blowing away from homes as people remained crouched indoors. Several hours before Nisarga's landfall, heavy rains or showers soaked the entire coastal region - Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg - accompanied by strong gales of upto 60-70 kmph since Tuesday evening, which intensified by Wednesday morning. Mumbai recorded upto 7 cms average rainfall. By evening, the restricted traffic movements in Mumbai had normalised though the Bandra Worli Sea Link and other coastal roads remained deserted in view of the heavy waves in the Arabian Sea, At least 10 crew members stranded aboard a merchant ship - which was tossed in the waves and ran aground near Mirkawada fishing village in Ratnagiri - were safely rescued by local fishermen and Indian Coast Guard. Following a runway excursion by a FedEx cargo aircraft on the Mumbai International Airport Ltd.'s secondary runway, and owing to inclement weather conditions, the airport suspended all flights from 2.30 p.m. but they were resumed at 6 p.m. Several long-distance trains on the Central Railway and Western Railway had been rescheduled to avoid the cyclone. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, along with other ministers and officials, continuously monitored the unfolding cyclonic situation while Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar was in constant touch with all coastal District Collectors and sought ground reports from them. Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat said that though Mumbai has been spared of the cyclonic wrath, the danger is not yet over as it continues to move in a north-eastern direction. "We are currently getting details with 'panchnama' of all the damage that has taken place in the affected regions. People must still remain vigilant as rains and strong winds will continue for at least another day," Thorat said. Rescue teams of the NDRF and the SDRF, besides army, navy, air force, coast guard, police, fire brigade, along with expert divers continue to remain on standby at various points in Mumbai to handle any flood like situation. Maharashtra Fishermen's Association President Damodar Tandel said that many fishing villages on the entire coastal belt have suffered huge damages due to the storm. "As per the latest information, most of our fishing boats were moored safely since the past couple of days, but the real damage will be known only after the stormy weather recedes. There are no reports of any casualties or missing fisherfolk," Tandel told IANS. Due to overnight rains, several low-lying and coastal areas of Mumbai and Thane, besides other districts experienced inundation, but there were no disruptions as most people kept off roads and stayed put in their homes. --IANS qn/vd
