The railways have cancelled 103 trains following the warning of a cyclonic storm. Recently, The Indian Meteorological Department recently issued a warning saying that the Fani has turned into an "extreme severe cyclonic" storm. According to the latest update, Fani is located around 225 kilometres south-southeast of <keyword id="60510" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Visakhapatnam">Visakhapatnam</keyword> and around 430 kilometres south-southwest of Puri, said the India Meteorological Department. Ministry of Home Affairs has ordered to release financial assistance, in advance, of ₹10.8 billion to four states that stand threatened by the natural disaster. Moreover, The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has decided to run a special train from Puri to Shalimar on Thursday for tourists in view of the landfall of cyclonic storm Fani on the Odisha coast. The train is scheduled to leave Puri at 12 noon on Thursday. It will make stoppages at Khurda Road, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Jajpur, Keonjhar Road, Bhadrak, Balasore and Kharagpur, said an ECoR official. Odisha was hit for 30 hours by a super cyclone two decades ago that killed 10,000. However, a million people were saved through mass evacuation, said the report. India has a cyclone season that generally starts in April and lasts till December. The season bounds tens of thousands of people to evacuate from their home leaving severe damages to infrastructure. Both India and Bangladesh have witnessed deaths and damages to crop and property.

The government is making special efforts to control the potential damages by mass evacuation of over 800,000 people. The name of the Cyclone ‘Fani’, pronounced as ‘Foni’ was suggested by Bangladesh. It means ‘Snake’ or ‘hood of snake’. The practice of naming the cyclones began when authorities found it difficult to use technical names to send warning signals to people. The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has a <a href="https://public.wmo.int/en/About-us/FAQs/faqs-tropical-cyclones/tropical-cyclone-naming">well-defined process to select the name </a>of each cyclone. India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan and Thailand send names of tropical cyclones developing in the North Indian Ocean to the regional committee. Presently, each country has suggested eight names for cyclones occurring in future. The name ‘Fani’ was decided from a list containing 64 names. Bangladesh also named Cyclone Ockhi that caused severe damages in Kerala. The Cyclone Titli, that hit Andhra and some parts of Odisha last year was named by Pakistan. India also has suggested many names including Agni, Akash, Bijli, Jal, Lehar, Megh, Sagar and Vayu. Here are some other names given by the eight countries :

He said that nine trains have been diverted and four trains have been short terminated. 12.00pm As per PIB, Cyclonic Storm 'Fani' lay centered at 10.30 Hours IST today. Puri reported maximum sustained wind speed of 142 Kmph gusting to 174 kmph as of 07.30 IST today. It is very likely to move north-north eastwards and weaken into a very severe cyclonic storm during next 3 hours. 11:46 a.m. West Bengal chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has reportedly cancelled all her political rallies. "We are monitoring the situation 24x7 and doing all it takes. I appeal to all people to cooperate.  The storm hit the eastern coast of India during the last week of April. While the government was able to contain casualties with timely evacuation, they could not protect the city’s power infrastructure from being ravaged by the storm. The cities of Puri, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Khurda saw the worst of it. As many as 3.5 million households continue to suffer without electricity, days after the storm came and left. Cyclone Fani rescue and relief efforts underway as Indian warships deployed to keep guard

At 5.30pm on Thursday ‘Fani’ was located at a distance of 320 km South from Puri. It hit Odisha coast between Gopalpur and Chandbali around Puri. The cyclone is expected to move towards West Bengal with a speed of 115 Kmph. Moreover, the cyclone is expected to move towards north-east region and emerge into Bangladesh on Saturday Evening, said IMD. Storm surge of about 1.5 metres height above astronomical tide is very likely to inundate low lying areas of Ganjam, Khurda, Puri and Jagatsinghpur districts of Odisha at the time of landfall.

 The affect of landfall has already begun. North Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Odisha are receiving light. The IMD said sea conditions are "very likely to be very rough" to high off north Tamilnadu, Puducherry, along and south Andhra Pradesh coasts till Friday. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into deep sea areas. It warned that the cyclone is likely to cause damages to all types of houses, communication and power poles, road and rail infrastructure. The Odisha government said that around 900 cyclone shelters have been made ready to house the evacuees. "It is estimated that a total of 1150,000 people will have to be moved to safer areas, of which about 330,000 people have already been evacuated," a statement said.

 Teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) have been put in place. Sinha directed establishment of a central toll free helpline for the general public and asked the Central ministries to set up control rooms to coordinate rescue and relief operations. The Civil Aviation Ministry informed that flight operations from Bhubaneswar were suspended from midnight of Thursday, while operations from Kolkata airport also will remain suspended from Friday morning until conditions improve. The railways have already suspended operations of trains in Odisha and all trains in Bhadrak-Vizianagaram section (of the Kolkata-Chennai route) has been cancelled till Saturday. A total of 140 trains including 83 passenger trains have been cancelled so far. The Indian Coast Guard and the Navy have deployed ships and helicopters for relief and rescue operations while the Army and Air Force units in the states have also been put on standby.

 Every year, states on India's eastern coast, especially Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, witness similar storms and often, they end up being devastating. A similar cyclone, but much more destructive, with a wind speed of 300 miles per hour had struck Odisha. It was the worst cyclonic disaster ever recorded in the last century <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india/revisiting-the-super-cyclone-that-hit-odisha-in-1999/story-S0lDY1STwdrVdMravThCZK.html" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">that killed over 9,800 people</a>.

 The Eastern Naval Command (ENC) is on high alert to render necessary humanitarian assistance, a Navy spokesperson said on Tuesday. Indian Naval ships at Visakhapatnam and Chennai are on stand-by to proceed to the most affected areas to undertake Humanitarian Aid Distress Relief (HADR), evacuation, logistic support including providing medical aid. These ships are embarked with additional divers, doctors, inflatable rubber boats and relief material that include food, tents, clothes, medicines and blankets. Naval aircraft are also on stand-by at the Naval Air Stations INS Rajali at Arakkonam, Tamil Nadu and INS Dega at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, to undertake reconnaissance, rescue, casualty evacuation and air drop of relief material to the stranded if required, the spokesperson added. The ENC is closely monitoring the developments in the Bay of Bengal and Flag Officer Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Naval Area (FOTNA) and Naval Officers-in-Charge (Andhra Pradesh) and (Odisha) are in constant communication with respective state administrations. Cyclone Fani, a 'very severe' natural disaster is set to hit India's eastern coast

New Delhi, May 21 () Kolkata-headquartered Bandhan Bank on Thursday said its services have been impacted in some areas of West Bengal and Odisha due to Amphan and the cyclone is likely to impact business worth Rs 260 crore. The lender expects to resume banking services in these areas shortly. Cyclone Amphan struck five districts in southern West Bengal and northern coastal Odisha starting in the afternoon of Wednesday and lasting till the wee hours of the morning of Thursday. As per the initial assessment, in our areas of operations, 49 banking units (micro banking outlet) in five districts were impacted, of which 45 are operational on Thursday, Bandhan Bank said in a regulatory filing. The bank could continue operations in all but five branches in the affected districts. "Where the outlets could not continue services, it was due to issues in accessibility. We expect these outlets to resume operations shortly," it said. The new-age bank said the banking outlets in the areas that had received prior warning of the cyclone were prepared with necessary safety and business continuity measures which enabled continuity of operations. "As per our estimate, the business of around 65,000 of our micro banking borrowers, amounting to an exposure of about Rs 260 crore, could be impacted due to the cyclone." The major impact has been in the district of South 24 Parganas. "In our experience of Fani, the cyclone that caused large-scale damage in Odisha in May 2019, the impacted portfolio took 3 to 6 months to achieve normalcy, aided by the committed workforce and customer loyalty. "On the back of this experience, we expect the Amphan-affected portfolio to regularise by the third quarter of 2020-21," it said. <ul><li>IBM’s new <keyword id="424037" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Weather-Forecasting">weather forecasting</keyword> model — IBM GRAF — will run on a supercomputer while using AI, cloud and analytics to predict weather events.</li><li>The company claims its new product is three times more accurate than existing global forecasting models.</li><li>GRAF will be able to predict the weather up to 12 hours in advance and its forecasts will be updated on an hourly basis.</li></ul>Climate change isn’t only crippling the planet but also cost the world nearly $225 billion in 2018 by causing severe distortions in weather patterns making business decisions uncertain. IBM has a plan to mitigate those shocks with its new weather forecasting system that runs on a supercomputer.  Nearly 72% of Indians believe that the local economy has been affected by a severe weather event in 2019, according to Climate Change Perception in India. The new weather forecasting system — IBM GRAF — will be able to limit that damage. According to the company, it will be able to predict weather conditions up to 12 hours in advance — something that wasn’t available on a global scale until now. And, it won’t be doing it alone. Its calculations will be supported by artificial intelligence (AI), cloud, and analytics to help with decision making — for just for businesses, but users as well. How is weather forecasting going to get better? IBM promises that its predictions will be more accurate and timely. Current global forecasting models — like the European ECMWF and US’ GFS model — cover 9 to 12 kilometres at a time and are updated every six hours. In comparison, IBM GRAF is able to shrink that distance to 3 kilometre — which means its high-resolution images will be 3-4 times greater. It will provide a resolution so fine that approximations will no longer be needed to figure out where thunderstorms are headed and how they might behave. And, its forecasts will be updated six to 12 times more frequently — that’s nearly once every hour. The primary difference between global models and GRAF is how they predict the weather. Where the ECMWF and GFS solve mathematical equations to figure out how the atmosphere will flow, the GRAF model uses a variable-resolution grid — which kind of looks like a net being thrown over the planet.
